The Effect of Lateral Spacing on the Spring Start

Grossarth, Kyle Louis 08 July 2010 (has links)
Sprinters are always looking for an improvement in their time, from the gun going off until the finish. An effective start can lead to reaching top velocity sooner and a decreased finish time. New developments in starting blocks, more specifically the width of the starting block pedal, has allowed for variation in foot placement in the blocks. With the ability to change how wide an athlete can place their feet in the blocks, this study looked at trying to find an optimum spacing for college level sprinters. Thirteen Male College Sprinters (mean age = 23.08 years) participated in this study. Subjects self selected their longitudinal block spacing with 3 different lateral positions being tested. In position 1, the feet were placed as narrow as was allowed by the starting block, simulating the width of a traditional set of blocks. Position 2 was defined by the hip width of the individual, distance between right ASIS to left ASIS. Position 3 was the preferred foot width of the subject as determined by completing a vertical jump. Measurements of peak force on the blocks at the time of the start as well as time to 10 m were taken. Neither peak force nor time to 10 m were different between conditions (p = .887, p = .135). The normal condition, position 1 (20cm), was measured to be the narrowest width with position 3 (mean = 37.6cm) being the widest in all subjects. The use of wider pedals on starting blocks is a fairly new idea in track and field, and is something that many athletes have not had the chance to practice with. Since the older style of starting blocks only allowed for a narrow stance that is what track athletes have become accustomed to and could possibly explain why there was no significant difference seen between the 3 starting positions. More research should be done after a time of adaptation to the new starting blocks by the athletes.

Investigation on Starting Transient Characteristics of Metal Halide Lamps

Tang, Sheng-Yi 11 August 2010 (has links)
The dissertation investigates the starting transient behaviors of metal halide lamps driven by constant currents and constant powers, respectively. Based on the investigation results, three starting scenarios are proposed for shortening the starting time, and an identification strategy is figured out for designing an electronic ballast being capable of driving three small-wattage lamps rated at different powers. A laboratory electronic ballast is designed to drive small-wattage metal halide lamps with a programmable low-frequency square-wave current. Experiments are conducted to examine the effects of the starting current on variations of the light output as well as the lamp voltage and power. From the effects of the applied current on the generated luminance, three starting scenarios are attempted to accelerate the starting transient stage. Experimental evidence shows that the starting time can be effectively shortened by increasing the lamp current during glow-to-arc and warm-up stages. A short interval of over-power operation during the warm-up stage enables the lamp to further enhance the producing of luminance quickly, and hence greatly reduce the starting transient period. According to the starting transient characteristics of metal halide lamps, an identification strategy is figured out to recognize three small-wattage metal halide lamps rated at powers of 20-W, 35-W and 70-W from three world-wide prominent brands, GE, OSRAM and PHILIPS. An electronic ballast is designed to drive the metal halide lamps with the multi-stage constant-power starting scenario. Experimental results evidence that the electronic ballast with the proposed identification strategy can recognize three lamps¡¦ rated powers correctly during the starting transition, and drive the lamp to its rated power before entering the steady-state.

The research on the background and course of starting an enterprise of the successful entrepreneur -- take the model of entrepreneurial youth as the example

Liu, Mei-Jung 21 December 2005 (has links)
ABCTRACT The world is undertaking a period of agitation on business venture. In United States, Britain, Taiwan or other developed countries, no matter the government, academia or even the enterprises, it is obvious to see that they all pay attention to the topic on research of entrepreneurship management. Starting business is not difficult but it is not easy to run it successfully. You have to face countless crisis and uncertainty. While the success story of Mr. Wang Yongqing wins universal praise, more people ask curiously "Where is the next Wang Yongqing?¡¨. In order to implement the localization of research, we will concentrate on the model of entrepreneurial youth in Taiwan. This fills in the breach on the research of the factors for successful which includes the background and the course of starting an enterprise of the local entrepreneur. We have taken thorough interview with them. Based on the result, we suggest the following as the direction to research: background, characteristic of the personality, motivation, course, and style of the leadership. After the analysis, we conclude the necessary factors of a successful entrepreneur and assign the following topics: 1. To compare with authoritative discipline, it is easier to cultivate the necessary spirit and personality of a successful entrepreneur with democratic and permissive disciplines. 2. If the member of the family has experience on business venture, it is easier to cultivate a successful entrepreneur. 3. If the entrepreneur has stronger society support system, it is easier for him to be success. 4. Out of the five characteristics of the personality, a successful entrepreneur is always agreeable and conscientious. 5. If the entrepreneur continues to study, it is easier for him to be success. 6. If the entrepreneur is highly self-fulfilling and self-disciplined, it is easier for him to be success. 7. If the entrepreneur has a clear objective and executes toward it precisely, it is easier for him to be success. 8. If the entrepreneur is high-pressure resistance, well prepared oneself to changes and highly relievable from pressure, it is easier for him to be success. 9. If the entrepreneur has both Transformational and Transactional leadership styles, it is easier for him to be success. 10. If the entrepreneur has strong social conscience, it is easier for him to be success.

Starting Profile of Fluorescent Lamp

Lee, Kuo-Hsing 03 February 2010 (has links)
This dissertation proposes a new starting profile with some modifications to the definition of American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to interpret the starting process of fluorescent lamps driven by high- frequency electronic ballasts. To identify the times of preheating, ignition, and steady-state, the staring transient waveforms of lamp voltages as well as the lamp currents are scrutinized from the experiments on a diversity of ballasting techniques. A glow-to-arc transition is considered to account for the stage between glow discharging and a stable lamp arc. In addition, the filament preheating is not limited to the constant voltage but can be current preheating which is more commonly used in commercial products. By the new definition, the glow current and the glow-to-arc current can be calculated to evaluate the lamp starting performance. The applicability of the starting profile is confirmed experimentally by the instant-start, preheat-start, rapid-start, modified rapid-start, and programmable rapid-start schemes.

Asinchroninio variklio paleidimo trukmės tyrimas / The research of the starting time of the induction motor

Lingevičius, Antanas 21 June 2006 (has links)
The starting time of the three – phase asynchronous motors can be determined using the equation of the movement of the electric drive putting down into this equation the mechanical characteristics of the mechanism and motor. The mechanical characteristics of the motor often are expressed by the Kloss formula, but this formula can't be used for the up to date asynchronous motors, wich have very different mechanical characteristics. The analysis of the method letting to express the mechanical characteristics of the motor as the sum of two components: one according Kloss formula, another – as a power function, are carried out. Using this expession of the mechanical characteristics of the induction motor and the equation of the movement of the drive, the method for determination of the starting time is developed.

REDUCED FREQUENCY MOTOR STARTING FOR THIRD WORLD POWER SYSTEMS

Begley, Taylor A. 01 January 2009 (has links)
People in modern industrialized societies live a blessed life relative to those who do not when it comes to some modern conveniences. While many think nothing of flipping on a light switch or running electric appliances, there are people in third world countries could not imagine such things. As service projects are being undertaken to bring such conveniences to those less fortunate, there often is the harsh reality of a strict budget. An item that commands a large portion of said budget is often the diesel generator used to provide the facility with electricity. Generators serving motor loads are typically oversized due to a large kVA starting requirement. This paper addresses an approach to this problem by temporarily restricting the generator fuel supply by pulling back the rack of the mechanical governor reducing the frequency and voltage output as a motor load is switched onto the system. By reducing the voltage and frequency output of the generator, the motor is switched on at a time when its typically poor power factor and resulting kVA requirement is mitigated by the lower voltage and frequency allowing for a smaller generator to be used.
