Differing Motivations in the International System : A Comparative Case Study of Sweden and Poland regarding participation in the international interventions in Iraq 2003 and Libya 2011

Gadd, Adam January 2020 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to examine what factors cause states to engage or not engage in military interventions. More specifically this thesis aims to highlight these factors by focusing on the contrasting decisions of Sweden and Poland regarding the 2003 Invasion of Iraq and the 2011 Intervention in Libya. The research question of this thesis is as follows: Why did Poland participate in the 2003 Invasion of Iraq whilst Sweden did not and why did Sweden participate in the 2011 military intervention in Libya whilst Poland did not? The theoretical departure point is that norms influence the decisions of states when deciding on intervention or non-intervention. The empirical analysis is performed through a qualitative text analysis of a combination of Swedish and Polish materials. The analysis shows the results that Sweden is more heavily influenced by the norms of humanitarian intervention and responsibility to protect than Poland and that Poland has a more emphasized focus on improving territorial defence through participation in military interventions.

Aktörskoalitioner och strategier i policyprocessen : En fallstudie av Jokkmokks energipolitik

Häggbom, Gustav January 2020 (has links)
The political context on the local level plays a major role for governments to implement climate and energy policy. Drawing on the advocacy coalition framework, this paper examines the roles of actors and coalitions around energy politics in the case of Jokkmokk. The study utilizes a qualitative method to identify actors, coalitions and their strategies. The studies results show two strong coalitions, the Environmental coalition and the Industrial coalition. The most common strategy utilized by both coalitions was affecting public opinion via information. There was evidence that the Industrial coalition was having the upper hand in the policy subsystem due to Jokkmokks municipal climate and energy strategy acknowledging the importance of further development of energy production. However, implementation of Jokkmokks climate and energy strategy might face harsh resistance from the actors in the Environmental coalition. These findings suggest that major policy change is not very likely to happen in the case of Jokkmokk.

PARTY-POLITICS MATTERS IN PLANNING FOR SUSTAINABILITY -A comparative study of two Swedish municipalities with different party-political majorities

Lindstrand Widström, Joel January 2020 (has links)
This study aims to examine if party political governance creates different planning for sustainable development. The study examines two Swedish municipalities: Vellinge and Grums. These two municipalities have been selected because they have different political parties in majority. Grums municipality is governed by the Swedish Social Democrats, which is a left-wing party, while Vellinge is governed by the Moderates, which is a right-wing party. The study asks whether municipal planning for sustainability is carried out differently in municipalities with different political majorities. The previous research then helps to formulate two hypotheses that will enable the research question to be answered. The first hypothesis is that sustainable development policies in municipalities with a left-wing majority cover more areas of sustainable development than municipalities with a right-wing majority. The second hypothesis is that sustainable development policies in municipalities with a left-wing majority include more restrictive measures than municipalities with a right-wing majority. The study conducts a qualitative text analysis of comprehensive plan documents to test the hypotheses. Three pillars of sustainability are used to analyze the first hypothesis, while the other hypothesis is tested based on three different instruments to govern by policy. The analysis of this study confirms both hypotheses. The study therefore concludes that municipal planning for sustainability is carried out differently in municipalities with different political majorities.

Skillnader i kommunalt valdeltagande : Resurser, mobilisering och attityder

Rolands, Oliver January 2020 (has links)
