Thesis (MScEng)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Connections are a vitally important part of any structural framework. Thisstatement may seem
obvious, yet it is surprisinghow often insufficient attention is given to the design of this essential
aspect of steelwork projects.
This thesis concentrates on developing a specification for designing steel connections with the
main emphasis on the practical and economical design of typical connections. The design
methods of the specification are developed according to the new South African design code
which is currently in draft form, namely SANS10162:Code of Practice for the Structural Use of Steel:
Part 1: Limit States Design of hot-rolled steelwork - 2002.
An object-oriented framework and associated graphical user interface for designing the
connections are developed and implemented. The primary objectives of the implemented
framework are:
• Being generic in the sensethat it allows for easy addition of additional connection types,
• To implement the design paradigm of the South African code, without fixing specific
parameter values programmatically in the implementation and
• To build on an existing architecture that allows for structural analysis,structural steel member
design and distributed collaboration in the design process. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Verbindings vorm In uiters belangrike deel van enige staal struktuur. Alhoewel hierdie stelling dalk
vanselfsprekend mag wees, is dit egter verbasend hoe selde voldoende aandag aan die ontwerp

Hierdie tesis konsentreer op die ontwikkeling van In spesifikasievir die ontwerp van staal verbindings
met die oog op praktiese en ekonomiese ontwerp van tipiese verbindings. Hierdie
ontwerpmetodes isgebasseer op die nuwe Suid Afrikaanse ontwerpkode wat tans in proef-vorm is,

Fatigue behavior of corrosion notched weathering steel samplesUnknown Date (has links)
Weathering steel has been a primary construction material for bridges in the
United States. Notches caused by corrosion are observed on the flange of steel
I-beams. These notches reduce the cross section area of the structure and are
threats to bridge safety. A606-04 Type 4 cold rolled weathering steel samples
were studied in this thesis to understand the effect of notches that caused by
corrosion. Weathering steel samples were in the shape of plates, which simulated
flange of I-beams. The plate samples were notched across their surfaces by
applying electrical current through an electrochemical circuit composed of an
anode, a cathode and electrolyte. Sixteen samples were notched and cut into
appropriate shape for fatigue testing. S-N (Stress-Number of cycles to failure)
diagram established from fatigue data indicated that the fatigue strength
decreased below AASHTO category B. Weibull analysis was also performed to

Corrosion initiation and propagation on corrosion resistant alloys embedded in concrete by accelerated chloride transportUnknown Date (has links)
Two duplex stainless steels rebars: UNS32304SS and UNS32101SS, were selected to investigate the corrosion initiation and propagation in reinforced concrete specimens. The investigation is divided in two phases with two different methods to accelerate the transport of chlorides through the concrete and initiate corrosion in a short period of time. After corrosion had initiated and propagated for some time; selected specimens were terminated for visual examination. On specimens selected for autopsy, the rebars in the top row showed corrosion to various degrees. Corrosion had propagated to such extent on the terminated specimens that the specimen showed cracks. Stray current might have caused accelerated corrosion on rebars where corrosion had initiated. Based on chloride concentrations measured at the rebar trace, corrosion initiated: on S32101 rebars on average at 7.9 kg/m3, and S32101 rebars on average at 6.0 kg/m3. Factors affecting the behaviour of the shear connection of steel-concrete composite beamsErnst, Stefan, University of Western Sydney, College of Health and Science, School of Engineering January 2006 (has links)
The inclusion of trapezoidal types of steel decking in the shear connection of composite beams has been found to significantly reduce their maximum strength and ductility by causing premature concrete-related failure modes. In order to investigate the complex behaviour and various load-transfer mechanisms that can occur in composite beams incorporating this type of connections, a total of 91 carefully-designed push-out tests were performed. Specific failure modes in conventionally reinforced specimens were initially induced by varying critical parameters. Specimens incorporating specific stud reinforcing devices were subsequently tested to suppress the undesirable failure modes. The concrete reinforcing and stud performance-enhancing devices, which included novel waveform-type reinforcement elements and spiral wire or ring components surrounding individual studs in secondary composite beams and special haunch reinforcement in primary beam applications, significantly delayed the onset and reduced the effect of the premature concrete-related failure modes. Hence, they increased the ultimate strength and ductility of the shear connection. The findings of the small-scale push-out tests were also verified in two full-scale composite beam tests which showed good agreement in shear connection behaviour and failure mode. Most of the design approaches currently used around the world take into account the weakening effect of trapezoidal types of decking by applying a reduction factor to the nominal strength that the same connection would have in a solid slab. From the test results, it is evident that not every shear connection incorporating steel decking, and within the limits of the associated standards, can be classified as ductile. A new and more reliable design approach is proposed which also incorporates the application of the various stud reinforcing devices. The key element of this design approach is to classify the anticipated connection behaviour, in regards to its deformation capacity, into ductile or brittle connections, hence ensuring satisfactory shear connection behaviour where the new types of trapezoidal steel decking are used. A reliability analysis of the new proposal is presented which enables the application of this new approach in accordance with AS 2327.1 (Standards Australia 2003). It is calibrated to provide a reliability index similar to stud applications currently in use. Simple strength reduction factors for the types of trapezoidal steel decking available in Australia are also provided which can be applied to the current solid slab shear connection strength for a fast and simplified design. / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
