The Relationship Between Adult Hippocampal Neurogenesis and Spatial Learning and Memory in Natural Populations of Food-storing Red Squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus).

Johnson, Kristin Margaret 24 February 2009 (has links)
Previous research on the relationship between spatial memory and adult hippocampal neurogenesis has been controversial. In the present study, neurogenesis was compared between two natural populations of the same species that differ in their reliance on spatial memory to cache and retrieve stored food. Western red squirrels store food in a single site whereas eastern red squirrels store food in multiple sites. Neurogenesis was assessed using endogenous markers of the number of proliferating cells (Ki-67) and the number of immature neurons (DCX), and neuronal recruitment was determined by measuring the area of the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus. The number of proliferating cells, immature neurons and neuronal recruitment were enhanced in the eastern compared to the western red squirrels, reflecting the food storing strategies used by the squirrels. This suggests that there is a positive correlation between adult hippocampal neurogenesis and spatial learning and memory.

A Framework to Support A Systematic Approach to Unit Cost Development

Ramesh, Sushanth 2009 December 1900 (has links)
Availability of historical unit cost data is an important factor in developing accurate project cost estimates. State highway agencies (SHAs) collect data on historical bids and/or production rates, crew sizes and mixes, material costs, and equipment costs, including contractor overhead and profit. The objective of this research is to create a framework to define a standardized and a systematic approach for developing unit costs for construction project estimating. A literature review was conducted that provided an overview of estimating techniques used in project estimating, estimation guidelines maintained by SHAs, and information systems used in the estimation process. After gaining a broad overview of the industry‘s approach to unit cost development, a survey was then conducted. The purpose of the survey was to identify the state of practice in SHAs for unit cost development. The survey helped to identify SHAs doing considerable work in unit cost development and interviews were conducted with these agencies to know their unit cost development process in detail. The results from survey and the interviews were then used in defining the framework. The framework provides a standardized way to use historical data for preparing construction project estimates.

Didelių duomenų kiekių saugojimas ir apdorojimas nutolusių interneto centrų stebėjimo ir administravimo sistemoje / Storing and processing big amount of data on tracking and management system for distant centers of internet

Augulis, Nauris 16 July 2008 (has links)
Project describes specifying, designing and implementing tracking and administration system for distant internet centers. Analysis of design and technology solutions were researched during this project development. Some basic goals of system realization and potential solutions were formulated, which were presented. The architecture of the software developed is based on three layer design. This software was installed over thousand of computers and successfully used by people. Some research of system usage and user experience was done after system installation. This was done with the purpose of software quality analysis, that showed system quality is evaluated as an average, but its functionality was high.

Možnosti variant rozvozu ručního nářadí / Possible variants of distributions of the hand tools

Sýkora, Jiří January 2010 (has links)
The thesis deals with only one of many problems of the founding plan dealing with online lending tools. It the thesis I'm interested in how the tools store and prepare to dispatch, how to distribute it and how to find the optimal way of distribution. The optimal way has been found as the result of a few imaginary distributions. The distances match to the reality. The stops have come from the estimate based on the demand analysis. The thesis is divided to two parts, to the theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part are theoretically explained the used methods in the practical are the methods practically used.

Schwager-Guilloux, Julie 26 June 2014 (has links)
Des suggestions techniques sont tirées de ces résultats / Despite the presence of a soil and plants, green roof impact on water quality has proven to be mixed, mainly because there are not designed to purify rainwater. To make suggestions for green roofs suitable for water treatment, it is important to better understand pollutant fluxes in these structures. Dedicated to metals, this thesis is based on two complementary steps : - the study of six green roofs built in 2010 (Nancy, France), thanks to rain and roof waters, plants and materials samplings. - a laboratory characterization of these materials via microscopic scale observations, sorption and lixiviation tests. Material characteristics are mostly favorable to metal storing but several of them have been identified as sources of metals via leaching of fine particles or lixiviation of available ions. Even if they have no specific ability to store metals, plants can have direct and indirect impacts on metal retention. Several technical suggestions are drawn from these scientific results

Optimal ways to harvest and purify rainwater in the Western and Nyanza provinces, Kenya

Odevik, Anders, Nordström, Christian January 2010 (has links)

The access to water in the regions around Lake Victoria varies with the rainy seasons. Today the daily labor of fetching water is a heavy burden for people in the rural areas. In the process of this study farmers in the Western and Nyanza provinces in Kenya are interviewed, water samples are analysed and present rainwater harvesting techniques and purification methods are observed. As a result, suitable solutions to the problems found are discussed. An optimal system is chosen for the region with a concept selection matrix. An elaborated dimensioning tool for roof and purpose-built harvesting systems is developed. Finally a summarized manual is attached in order to raise interest for rainwater harvesting among the farmers that the non-governmental organisation SCC-Vi Agroforestry cooperates with.
/
