Non-planar Ads/CFT from group representation theory

Smith, Stephanie 12 June 2014 (has links)
In this thesis we explore certain limits of the AdS/CFT correspondence for integrability. This is done by calculating the action of the dilatation operator on operators known as restricted Schur polynomials, which are AdS/CFT dual to D3-branes known as giant gravitons. We focus on operators in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory, which is dual to type IIB string theory on an AdS5×S5 background. We find that, in various cases, this theory is integrable in a large N non-planar limit.

Non-perturbative string theory from the gauge/gravity correspondence

Graham, Stuart 29 January 2015 (has links)
A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Science, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in fulfilment of requirements for the degree of Master of Science. Johannesburg, 30.09.2014. / ABSTRACT In this dissertation we study the action of the one loop dilatation operator on operators with a classical dimension of order N. We consider the su(3) and su(2) sectors. The operators in the su(3) sector are constructed using three complex fields X, Y and Z, while operators in the su(2) sector are constructed from only the two complex fields Y and Z. For the operators in these sectors non-planar diagrams contribute already at the leading order in N and the planar and large N limits are distinct. Although the spectrum of anomalous dimensions in su(3) has been computed for this class of operators, previous studies have neglected certain terms which were argued to be small. After dropping these terms diagonalizing the dilatation operator reduces to diagonalizing a set of decoupled oscillators. In this dissertation we explicitly compute the terms which were neglected previously and show that diagonalizing the dilatation operator still reduces to diagonalizing a set of decoupled oscillators. In the su(2) sector the action of the one loop and the two loop dilatation operator reduces to a set of decoupled oscillators and factorizes into an action on the Z fields and an action on the Y fields. Direct computation has shown that the action on the Y fields is the same at one and two loops. In this dissertation, using the su(2) symmetry algebra as well as structural features of field theory, we give compelling evidence that the factor in the dilatation operator that acts on the Y s is given by the one loop expression, at any loop order. Correspondance AdS/CFT et théories des champs à fort couplage / Gauge/Gravity Duality and Field Theories at Strong Coupling

Giecold, Gregory 17 June 2011 (has links)
In this thesis, we apply the gauge/string duality in its supergravity limit to infer some properties of field theories at strong coupling. Experiments at RHIC and at the LHC indeed suggest that the quark--gluon plasma behaves as one of the most perfect fluid ever achieved in any controlled experimental setup. Perturbative approaches fail at accounting for its properties, whereas lattice QCD methods face technical as well as conceptual difficulties in computing dynamical aspects of this new state of matter. As a result, the AdS/CFT correspondence currently is the best tool at our disposal for analytically modelling this phase of QCD. One of the contributions of this thesis amounts to deriving a stochastic Langevin equation for a heavy quark moving across a maximally supersymmetric Yang--Mills plasma at strong coupling. Even though this theory seems to describe in a surprisingly satisfactory way the high--energy, deconfined phase of QCD, it is also of much interest to try and search for a string theory dual making closer contact with QCD at lower energies. As such, the other main focus of this thesis deals with supergravity solutions of lesser supersymmetry, without conformal invariance and exhibiting confinement. We build for the first time the gravity dual to metastable states of such theories. In particular, we find the contribution from anti--branes to the inflation potential in some general scenario of string cosmology.

Ordering homotopy string links over surfaces and a presentation for the generalized string links over surfaces / Ordenando os grupos de homotopia de enlaçamentos de intervalos em supefícies e uma apresentação para os grupos de homotopia de enlaçamentos de intervalos em superfícies

Lima, Juliana Roberta Theodoro de 13 October 2014 (has links)
In this work, we prove that the set of link-homotopy classes of generalized string links over a closed, connected and orientable surface M of genus g ≥ 1 form a group, denoted by Bn(M) and we find a presentation for it. Moreover, we prove that its normal subgroup PBnn(M), namely, the homotopy string links over M, is bi-orderable. These results extend results proved by Juan GonzalezMeneses in [GM], [GM2] and Ekaterina Yurasovskaya in [Y], respectively. Also, we obtain an exact sequence for link-homotopy braid groups, which is an extension of [Go, Theorem 1]. / Sem resumo

\"Branas em supergravidade\" / Branes in supergravity

Bevilaqua, Leandro Ibiapina 04 May 2006 (has links)
This work intends to review the brane solutions of supergravity and contains a datailed deduction of the extremal and black solutions. In order to provide some motivations to the choices through the calculation, this work includes a brief review of some concepts from string theory and supersymmetry. This review will enable us to relate the supergravity solutions to string theory\'s branes and to make considerations about the role of this relationship in the duality between gauge and gravity theories.

Teoria de cordas, invariância conforme e simetria BRST / String theory, Conformal invariance and BRST symmetry

Aguila, Hector Arturo Benitez Del 31 October 2013 (has links)
The main goal of this work is to study the covariant quantization of the bosonic and RNS string theories by exploiting the involved symmetries, namely, the BRST and conformal invariance for the bosonic string and the corresponding supersymmetric generalizations for the fermionic case. In particular, we discuss some perturbative aspects of the bosonic theory and the construction of vertex operators for the fermionic string.

N = 1 and non-supersymmetric open string theories in six and four space-time dimensions

Görlich, Lars 22 October 2003 (has links)
This thesis contains an introductory chapter on orbifolds. Besides rudimentary basics we discuss more advanced topics like discrete torsion and asymmetric orbifold groups. As examples we investigate torus compactifications and an asymmetric T^4/Z(3)^L x Z(3)^R orbifold. The following chapter explains the foundations of orientifolds, including open strings with Chan-Paton degrees of freedom. Chapters 4-7 present own research. In chapter 4 we quantize open strings with linear boundary conditions, as they show up in electro-magnetic fields. We quantize the zero- and momentum-modes for toroidal compactifications, too. As an application we calculate the commutator of the coordinate fields in the case of general constant Neveu-Schwarz U(1)-field strengths. Thereby we confirm previous results on non-commutativity of open string theories in Neveu-Schwarz backgrounds. Chapter 5 reviews the results of a former publication [1] on asymmetric orientifolds, supplemented by some recent insights in connection with the preceeding chapter. Chapter 6 is a summary of [2]. In this publication we investigated to what extend one can build phenomenologically interesting models from toroidal orientifolds. By turning on magnetic fluxes on D9-branes we induce chiral fermions. Most calculations are performed in an (equivalent) T-dual picture. Here the number of chiral fermions is given by the topological intersection number of D-branes. In orientifolds of toroidal compactifications one obtains either non-chiral or non-supersymmetric orientifold solutions. However both properties can be reconciled in orientifolds that are obtained from specific supersymmetric orbifold compactifications. In chapter 7 we present the "sigma Omega"-Orientifold on a T^6/Z(4) orbifold. As a very attractive example we investigate a supersymmetric U(4) x U(2)^3_L x U(2)^3_R model that is broken to an MSSM-like model by switching on suitable background fields in the low energy effective action. This chapter is based on our publication [3]. The thesis is supplemented by an appendix with formulas applied in the text, as well as proofs to two theorems that were used as well.
