The Effects of Student Activity Dashboards on Student Participation, Performance, and Persistence

Hill, Edwin 01 January 2018 (has links)
Researchers have turned their attention to the use of learning analytics and dashboard systems in education. Schools are using knowledge gained in this area to address the issue of persistence to increase graduation rates. While dashboard systems have been developed and are starting to be implemented, it is not yet clear how activity and performance data from dashboards influences student behavior. In addition, much of the research has been focused on instructor-facing dashboards rather than student-facing dashboards. The current study implemented a student-facing dashboard in the learning management system and measured how information on the dashboard may have influenced participation in discussions, student performance on graded items, and persistence in future courses. A dashboard tool was developed for this study. Activity, performance, and persistence data was collected from all participating students. The study followed an experimental design approach that involved assigning a random group of students from multiple courses to a dashboard tool which showed the individual student’s activity and performance compared with that of their peers. Activity indicators included frequency of posting, average length of posts, percent of posts made to peers, and percent of posts made to instructor. The current score for the student, as a measure of performance, was also shown on the dashboard along with the current class average. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) was used to determine whether there were statistically significant differences in participation as measured by number of posts, word count of posts, and percent of posts to peers or performance as measured by final grade. Chi Squared analysis was used to determine whether there were significant differences in persistence as a measure of whether students registered for and attended the following session. The analysis of results indicated no significant differences in participation or performance between the experimental and control groups (f(4, 59) = .947, p = .443). Similarly, no significant differences were found in persistence between the two groups (χ2(2) = .960, p = .619). Further research is needed to more fully understand the use of student dashboard interfaces and their impact on student behavior. Future studies using a similar methodology should incorporate larger sample sizes and include all students in the class, rather than using self-selected samples. A better understanding of how the use of dashboards influences participation, performance, and persistence is needed in order to develop effective strategies for supporting students.

[en] THE YOUNG COLLEGE STUDENT S MOVEMENT FOR MEDIA DEMOCRACY: THE CASE OF ENECOS IN RIO DE JANEIRO / [pt] O MOVIMENTO PELA DEMOCRATIZAÇÃO DA COMUNICAÇÃO POR JOVENS UNIVERSITÁRIOS: O CASO DA ENECOS E SUA REGIONAL NO RIO DE JANEIRO

ILANA ELEA SANTIAGO 05 September 2006 (has links)
[en] The present work has emphasized, by dint of a case study, the monitoring of a group of young college students who make part of ENECOS (National Executive of Social Communication Students). The study took nine months of participating observance along with students from the branch in Rio de Janeiro, who fight for the democratization of communication. During this period, in which the practices and tactics - including by means of the internet - were put into focus as a way of analyzing a student´s movement at present times. Besides that, 26 interviews were made personally and 70 online questionnaires were applied. The data collected was used to research not only how the media conceptions of these students were forged, so that they would choose to be involved by the democratization of communication, but also the ways which could have encouraged them to organize themselves collectively in the name of an ideal. The results indicate the dialog between the student´s movement and the organized social movements are the main source of mediation.

Nuotolinių mokymo sistemų vartotojų aktyvumo analizės ir valdymo metodai / Distance learning systems user's activity analysis and management methods

Kadikinas, Vaidas 02 September 2011 (has links)
Distance education technology is gaining momentum all around the world. Weaknesses and limitations in the technology are exposed more than ever. Activities, such as, stimulation of students’ activity and development of support systems are becoming important in attempts to lower student dropout rates and improve quality of education. This thesis has goals to review existing methodology of analyzing and encouraging student activity in higher education courses based on online technology. As well as to enhance current methods and set guidelines for development of the new ones. Literature analysis has highlighted the astonishing potential of data mining methods in Learning Management Systems. Based on these methods a new model of students’ activity stimulation has been suggested. The new model is based on automatic self tuning system which would analyze the behavior patterns of course users. The results of this analysis would be used to compose and send notifications of course events which are relevant for and desired by the individual user while respecting their learning patterns. Same system could inform instructor of any abnormalities in student learning behavior, unfavorable odds to successfully complete the course or even drop out. A study has been made, which confirmed the initial assumptions and potential usefulness of the proposed model.

PAULA ALEGRIA BENTO 16 March 2017 (has links)
[en] The field of work that generated this dissertation is based on an ethnographic research conducted among students from a public school in Rio de Janeiro. It focuses on the configurations of the experimentation of the sexuality and the student movement, as well as its relations with the traditional institution, teachers, servants and technicians, and with the world beyond its walls. The central axis of this investigation was placed in the challenge to follow and understand the various ways to express themselves, to move and to assert itself through the gender performances, sexual practices and the first participatory trials construction of political action within school and in their relations with the reality of contemporary society. This dissertation is dedicated to describe before territorialities than identities, differences than diversity, singularities than totalities. We should point out the perception of the action as a multitude of other interwoven actions, updating what comes to be called the actor-network and operating concepts un-discernable, as society and the individual, nature and culture, human and non-human.
