Critical success factors for managing the visitor experience at the Kruger National Park / Willy Hannes EngelbrechtEngelbrecht, Willy Hannes January 2011 (has links)
Nature–based tourism destinations have shown significant growth over the past decade and, with the ever increasing numbers of tourists travelling to national parks, the right management structures, goals and objectives need to be determined. South African National Parks (SANParks) manages all 22 national parks in South Africa with the Kruger National Park (KNP) being the biggest of them all and generating more than 80% of SANParks income. The KNP is one of the world’s largest parks conserving a staggering 1 962 362 ha of land which is bigger than countries such as Israel and Holland. When taking the KNP into perspective, park management must have the right management styles and factors in place to ensure that the park is managed in a sustainable manner and exceeds the expectations of the tourist to provide a memorable experience whilst visiting the KNP. The goal of this study was therefore to determine the critical management aspects or critical success factors (CSFs) needed to create a memorable visitor experience at the park.
This goal was achieved by conducting a questionnaire survey at four rest camps within the KNP from 27 December 2010 to 4 January 2011. The rest camps used for the survey were: Skukuza (152 questionnaires), Berg and Dal (98 questionnaires), Lower Sabie (85 questionnaires) and Satara (101 questionnaires). During this time a total of 436 questionnaires were completed and included in further analysis.
In Article 1, the key management aspects that visitors regard as important for a memorable visitor experience at the KNP were identified. These CSFs assist management in providing quality services and products for the tourist, leading to a memorable experience. A factor analysis was performed on the expectations of the tourists to national parks. There were nine CSFs identified that management can implement to ensure a memorable visitor experience. The three factors that have not yet been identified in previous research were wildlife experience, interpretation and luxuries. Other factors that have been identified were General management, Variety activities, Accommodation, Green management, Hospitality management, and Facilities. The results showed that park management needs to become aware of what the visitor sees as important factors for a memorable visitor experience and they can adapt certain aspects to improve the visitor’s experience.
In Article 2, gaps within the park management were identified. These gaps were measured by taking the 62 variables and asking the tourist what their expectations were with regard to a memorable experience versus their actual/real experience at the park. A factor analysis on the expectations and the actual/real experiences was done and each of these factors was given a score. The scores of each factor were measured against one another indicating the differences and gaps in management. The twelve factors that were identified were General management, Education activities. Accommodation facilities, Green management, Information provided, Layout of the park, Wildlife, Facilities in the park, Food and Beverage management, Interpretive activities, Bookings and General services, and Outdoor activities. These twelve factors have also been grouped into three sub groups containing four factors each and either the expectations were exceeded, did not meet expectations or were neutral. The main gaps were Education, Accommodation facilities, Interpretations facilities and Wildlife. If management want to ensure a memorable visitor experience at the KNP they must not only focus on these gaps, but also strive to exceed visitors’ expectations on all levels.
This research found that there are certain CSFs for managing a national park and gaps within park management that need to be addressed. These gaps or problem areas can be overcome by the implementation of a continuous evaluation process that will ensure effective and efficient management of the park. Park management can therefore improve their services and products as well as the quality thereof by knowing what the tourists see as important when visiting a national park to obtain a memorable experience that will lead to positive word of mouth, loyalty, increased revenue and sustainability of the KNP. Even though it is not a requirement of a masters’ dissertation to make a contribution, this research has made a significant contribution towards the methodology as the method applied determined the gaps in visitor experience and expectations and this has not been used before. Future research can make use of this type of method determining individuals’ expectations and experiences when visiting a national park or any other nature–based destination. / Thesis (M.Com. Medicine prescribing patterns in HIV/AIDS and non HIV/AIDS children : a comparative study in the private health care sector of South Africa / Mocke, M.Mocke, Martlie January 2010 (has links)
Background: According to the United Nations AIDS Reference Group (2010) and World Health Organization (2010:2), approximately 33 million people in the world had HIV/AIDS in 2009 of which 2.6 million were children. More than 30 million of these individuals resided in low– and middle–income countries. South–Africa had the highest prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the world with an estimated 5.2 million patients in 2009 (Statistics South Africa, 2010:2). Although the prevalence of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among children is reported to be high, little is known about other medication administrated concomitantly with their antiretroviral drugs.
Objective: The general objective of this study was to investigate possible changes in the medicine prescribing patterns of HIV/AIDS and non–HIV/AIDS children.
Methods: A quantitative, retrospective drug utilisation review was performed utilising medicine claims data of a South African pharmacy benefit management company. Data for a four–year period (Jan 1, 2005 to Dec 31, 2008) were analysed. The study population consisted of all children <=12 years divided into those receiving ARVs (designated HIV positive) and those without (designated HIV negative).
Descriptive statistics such as average mean, standard deviation, t–test, d–values, and two way frequency tables were used to describe the results. Data were analysed using the Statistical Analysis System ® SAS 9.1 ® programme.
Results: The study population (children <= 12 years) represented 16.2% (n = 197 323) of the total population in 2005, 15.4% (n = 193 346) in 2006, 15.6% (n = 142 049) in 2007 and 13.3% (n = 98 939) in 2008. Children with HIV/AIDS represented 0.2% (n = 197 323) of the study population in 2005 and increased to 0.4% (n = 98 939) in 2008, whereas the percentage of children without HIV/AIDS decreased from 99.8% (n = 197 323) in 2005 to 99.6% (n = 98 939) in 2008. The total number of HIV/AIDS children that also received other medication concomitantly with their ARVs increased from 96.5% (n = 402) in 2005 to 97.2% (n = 427) in 2008. Males with HIV/AIDS who used other medication represented 52.6% (n = 388) in 2005 and increased to 53.3% in 2008 while female HIV/AIDS patients represented 47.4% in 2005 and decreased to 46.7% in 2008.
Prescriptions containing three ARV items represented 69.5% (n = 2 969) of the total number of prescriptions received by HIV/AIDS patients in 2005 and decreased to 67.7% in 2008. The combination of lamivudine, nevirapine and stavudine were the three products that appeared most frequently on prescriptions for HIV/AIDS children in the age group 0 <= 1 years and 1 <= 5 years from 2005 to 2008. In the age group 5 <= 12 years the combination most frequently prescribed was lamivudine, nevirapine and zidovudine.
HIV positive children received 6.2 ± 4.62 prescriptions for other medication (non–ARVs) per year during 2005 compared to HIV negative children with 3.9 ± 3.71 (p < 0.0001, d = 0.5). In 2008 HIV positive children received 6.4 ± 5.02 prescriptions per year compared to HIV negative patients who received 4.36 ± 4.05 prescriptions (p < 0.0001, d = 0.5) in 2008.
HIV negative children received more central nervous system items, endocrine items and autacoids than HIV positive children, whereas HIV positive children received more respiratory system agents, dermatological, ear, nose throat and antimicrobials items.
Conclusion: The study showed that HIV positive children received significantly more prescriptions for other medication per year compared to their HIV negative counterparts. The top pharmacological groups mostly prescribed to both groups were respiratory agents, antimicrobials, analgesics, dermatological and ear, nose and throat items. / Thesis (M.Pharm. Tuberculosis awareness created through Facebook: a case study approach of TB Proof South Africa’s Facebook pageAsongu, Ndemaze 07 1900 (has links)

The purpose of this study was to explore the use of TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page in creating TB awareness. The literature on TB, social media, health promotional campaigns and health promotional models was reviewed to contextualise this study. A qualitative case study approach was used to collect data from TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page. Data was collected using three data collection methods; namely, online ethnographic observation, textual analysis and visual analysis.
The findings indicate that TB Proof South Africa‘s Facebook page creates awareness of TB. Results from this study also suggested collaboration between South African healthcare professionals and traditional health practitioners in the fight against tuberculosis. The study advocates the need for comparative studies to explore the use of other health-related Facebook pages. / Gesondheidsbevordering is ʼn opvoedkundige werktuig wat gebruik kan word om op te voed en bewustheid van gesondheidskwessies deur middel van verskeie mediavorme te skep. Die doel van hierdie studie was om die gebruik van TB Proof South Africa se Facebook-blad in die skepping van TB-bewustheid te verken. Leesstof oor TB, sosiale media, gesondheidsbevorderingsveldtogte en gesondheidsbevorderingsmodelle is beoordeel om hierdie studie te kontekstualiseer. ‘n Kwalitatiewe gevallestudiebenadering is gebruik om data van TB Proof South Africa se Facebook-blad in te samel. Data is ingesamel deur gebruikmaking van drie data-insamelingsmetodes, naamlik aanlyn etnografiese waarneming, teksontleding en visuele ontleding.
Die bevindings dui daarop dat TB Proof South Africa se Facebook-blad bewustheid van TB skep. Resultate van hierdie studie beveel ook samewerking tussen Suid-Afrikaanse gesondheidsorgberoepslui en tradisionele gesondheidspraktisyns in die stryd teen tuberkulose aan. A comparative morphological and morphometric study of the cranial and post-cranial osteology of South African hares - Cape hare (Lepus capensis) and Scrub hare (Lepus saxatilis) and its application in archaeozoologyScott, Karin 01 1900 (has links)
Text in English and abstract in English, Afrikaans and isiZulu / This archaeozoological study was undertaken to distinguish between the two hare species of South Africa, Lepus capensis (Cape hare) and Lepus saxatilis (scrub hare), from fragmentary archaeological faunal remains. It was previously not possible to taxonomically differentiate between these species. The research focused on Lagomorpha remains previously identified in Later Stone Age assemblages from two rock shelters, Blydefontein and Meerkat, in the Karoo. Analyses of modern skeletal material housed in museum collections demonstrated that there are indeed morphological and morphometric differences between Lepus capensis and Lepus saxatilis. The Lagomorpha material from the two archaeological assemblages were then re-examined utilising the newly established protocols. The reanalyses proved that it is now possible to distinguish between the two hare species even when in fragmentary form. It is also possible to identify Pronolagus. The dietary and likely cultural roles of the Lagomorpha and other small mammals in archaeological contexts are also explored. / Hierdie argeosoölogiese studie is onderneem om te onderskei tussen die twee haasspesies in Suid-Afrika, Lepus capensis (vlakhaas) en Lepus saxatilis (kolhaas), aan die hand van gefragmenteerde argeologiese fauna-oorblyfsels. Dit was nie voorheen moontlik om hierdie spesies taksonomies van mekaar te onderskei nie. Die navorsing fokus op Lagomorpha-oorblyfsels wat voorheen geïdentifiseer is in rotsskuiling-versamelings wat uit die Laat Steentydperk dateer. Die genoemde rotsskuilings is gevind by Blydefontein en Meerkat in die Karoo. Ontledings van moderne skeletmateriaal in museumversamelings het getoon dat daar wel morfologiese en morfometriese verskille tussen Lepus capensis en Lepus saxatilis is. Lagomorpha-materiaal afkomstig van die twee argeologiese versamelings is toe herondersoek aan die hand van nuut gevestigde protokolle. Die herontledings het bewys dat dit nou moontlik is om te onderskei tussen die twee haasspesies, selfs indien hulle gefragmenteerd is. Dit is ook moontlik om Pronolagus te identifiseer. Gestruktureerde mentorskap is vervolgens geidentifiseer as 'n geskikte metode om in die bestaande
behoefte te voorsien, aangesien mentorskap se loopbaan- en psigo-sosiale funksies die ontwikkeling van
die professionele en persoonlike vaardighede van die werknemer moontlik maak. Daarby is mentorskap
nie net voordelig vir die betrokkenes nie, maar dit hou ook besliste voordele in vir die organisasie en die
sektor waarbinne die organisasie werksaam is.
Die suksesvolle toepassing van gestruktureerde mentorskap is egter daaraan onderhewig dat die
kontekstuele omgewing waarbinne dit toegepas gaan word, geskik moet wees, en werknemers moet
bereid wees om betrokke te raak by so 'n program.
'n Konseptuele raamwerk vir die bestudering van mentorskap soos opgestel deur David Marshall Hunt en
Carol Michael is derhalwe aangepas om die verskynsel "mentorskap" deur middel van 'n verkennende
literatuuroorsig te bestudeer.
Die bevindinge van die literatuuroorsig word ondersteun deur 'n empiriese ondersoek van die geskiktheid
van die Nasionale Biblioteek van Suid-Afrika as kontekstuele omgewing vir die toepassing van
mentorskap en die bereidwilligheid van die werknemers van hierdie biblioteekorganisasie om betrokke te

aangespreek kon word nie. / Structured mentoring was identified as a method to develop the professional and personal skills of the
employees of the National Library of South Africa in order to adjust to local and global changes.
A conceptual framework for the study of mentoring, as developed by Hunt and Michael, was therefore
critically adapted in order to investigate fully the phenomenon of "mentoring" by means of an exploratory
literature review. The findings of the literature review are supported by an empirical survey to test the
suitability of the National Library of South Africa as contextual environment for the application of
mentoring, as well as the willingness of its employees to participate in mentoring. This culminated in an
analysis and interpretation of the findings and formulation of conclusions regarding the two abovementioned
requirements for the successful application of mentoring.
The study ends with recommendations for further investigation into aspects of mentoring which could not

is. Die vernuwingsproses sal veral in die sinode, kerkrade en
gemeentes se verstaan en toepassing van kerklike onderrig moet plaasvind.
Hierdie vernuwing sal uiteindelik binne die konteks van die plaaslike
gemeente moet realiseer, maar dan as 'n vernuwing wat meer is as hoe die
praktyk moet verander om by die teorie van die status quo aan te pas, dit
sou net die status quo tot ideologie verhef. Netso min beteken vernuwing
dat dit wat in praktyk werk tot norm verhef kan word, ongeag die veronderstelde
teoriee of metodes daaragter, dit sou die gevaar loop van ongeoorloofde
pragmatisme. Ook mag verandering en vernuwing nie met mekaar
verwar word nie, want nie alle veranderinge wat aangebring word, het
noodwendig enige vernuwing tot gevolg nie.
In die vernuwingsproses gaan dit nie oor die greep wat die kerk op jongmense
moet kry nie, maar om hulle die kans te gun om hul eie geloofsvisie
in hul gemeente te ontdek; daarom vra dit 'n gedifferensieerde onderrig
benadering, vanwee die differensiasie gedurende adolessensie; die kerk
moet leer om die taal te praat wat in die daaglikse werklikheid van
adolessente sin maak en hulle die ruimte gun om hul ervarings en vrae te
kan leer verwoord in die taal van godsdiens.
In die kerk se onderrig aan adolessente is geloofskommunikasie en geloofsbelewing
soms belangriker as die deurgee van geloofskennis. Die ontwikkel
ingsprosesse tydens adolessensie, hul geloofsvorming en die kerk-
1 ike onderrig wat hulle ontvang, bepaal grootliks hul uiteindelike geloofsvolwassenheid
en spiritualiteit.
Ten einde die kerk se verantwoordelikheid teenoor adolessente na te kom,
sal kerklike onderrig binne die konteks van adolessensie verstaan moet
word in terme van die kognitiewe, affektiewe en konatiewe ontwikkeling
en behoeftes van adolessente, soos wat dit binne hul leef- en portuurgroepkonteks
voorkom. / This thesis is the result of a qualitative research on theories and
practices which are followed or assumed to be followed in the religious
education of the Dutch Reformed Church. The research was done by means
of a theological reflective approach. The study concludes that the
solution for effective teaching by the church lies within the process of
renewal (and change) within each congregation; a process that leads to
a model of ministry that will be unique to that congregation. This
process of renewal must take place in the understanding and practice of
church education by the synod, church councils and congregations.
Ultimately this takes place within the context of the local church. But
then as a renewal that should be more than just another way to change the
praxis to accommodate the status quo, for this would transform the status
quo into an ideology. Renewal is likewise not a quest to sanctify that
which seems to work, irrepective of the theories and methods which are
implicated, this would lead to an illegal pragmatism. Nor should renewal
be confused with change, for not all changes necessarily causes any
renewal per se.
An important aspect in this process of renewal, is not the grip that the
church has on its youth, but the chance(s) they are given to discover
their own religious convictions in their congregation; this needs a differentiated
education approach because of the differentiation during
adolescence; the church will have to learn to speak in a language which
make sense in their daily reality and to give them the chance to express
their own experiences and questions in the language of religion. This
means that the church will have to understand their context of lifestyle
and peergoup influences and accordingly address the cognitive, affective
and conative aspects of religious education.
In the church religious education to adolescents, communicating and
experiencing religion is sometimes more important than the knowledge they
should obtain. The developmental processes of adolescents, the shaping
of their convictions of faith and the teaching of the church strongly

teacher education will have to be followed if teachers are to be empowered to teach
within the framework of the new educational dispensation, Curriculum 2005.
Because such a change implies a new curriculumfor teacher training there is a
need for research on how providers will have to adapttheir training approach and
curriculum to meet the challeng.es of Curriculum 2005.
In this study the development of a model for outcomes-based learning programme
design is undertaken.
To achieve this:
outcomes-based education systems in the USA, Australie, New Zealand, Canada
and England are investigated;
he unique model of outcomes-based education that is being implemented in Soutr
Africa is described and explained;
requirements for the training of teachers in the context of outcomes-based
education and Curriculum 2005 are identified and described;
a model for outcomes-based learning programme design is developed to serve as a
possible framework for the design of learning programmes for teaeher education for
outcomes-based education in South-Africa.
The study shows that outcomes-based teacher education has received only scant
attention in the rest of the world. It is also shown that the design of learning
programmes for outcomes-based education requires a somewhat different
approach than traditional curriculum design, where content play such a dominant
role.
A model for outcomes-based teacher.education is suggested to facilitate the
development of such programmes. It is hoped that the model will be of use and that
it will contribute to sensible learning programmes which will empower teachers to
function successfully in an outcomes-based education system. / Hierdie studie het ontstaan uit die besef dat 'n nuwe benadering tot
onderwysersopleiding gevolg sal moet word as onderwysers in staat gestel moet
word om die nuwe kurrikulum, Kurrikulum 2005, op uitkomste- gebaseerde wyse in
die praktyk te fasiliteer. Omdat so 'n verandering 'n nuwe kurrikulum impliseer is
daar 'n behoefte aan navorsing om te bepaal hoe onderwysersopleidingsinstansies
hul opleidingsbenadering en-kurrikulum moet aanpas om aan die eise van die
nuwe kurrikulum en die nuwe onderrigrnodel in Suid-Afrika te voldoen.
In hierdie studie is daar gepoog om 'n model vir uitkomste-gebaseerde leerprogramontwerp,
vir die·opleiding van Suid-Afrikaanse onderwysers te ontwikkel.
Om dit te kon regkry is:
'n ondersoek geloods na uitkomste-gebaseerde onderrigstelsels in die VSA,
Australie, Nieu-Zeeland, Kanada en Engeland;
die ontstaan en ontwikkeiing van die unieke model van uitkomste-gebaseerde
onderrig wat tans in Suid-Afrika geimplementeer word, beskryf en verklaar;
vereistes vir die opleiding van onderwysers geidentifiseer en beskryf binne die
konteks van 'n uitkomste-gebaseerde onderrigrnodel en Kurrikulum 2005;
'n model vir uitkomste-gebaseerde leerprogram ontwikkel wat as moontlike
raamwerk kan dien vir die ontwerp van leerprogramme vir opleiding van
onderwysers vir uitkomste-gebaseetde onderrig in Suid-Afrika.
Hierdie studie toon aan dat uitkomste-gebaseerde onderwysersopleiding nog weinig
aandag geniet het in die res van die wereld. Daar word ook aangetoon dat die
ontwerp van leerprogramme vir uitkomste-gebaseerde onderwysersopleiding 'n
ietwat ander benadering vereis as wat gegeld het in tradisionele kurrikulumontwerp,
waar inhoude so 'n dominante rol speel.
'n Model vir leerprogramontwerp vir uitkomste-gebaseerde onderwysersopleiding
word voorgestel om die ontwikkeling van sodanige programme te vergemaklik.
Daar word vertrou dat die model van waarde sal wees en daartoe sal meewerk dat

Die missionêre waarde van die Belhar Belydenis vir die NG Kerk : instrument tot inheemswording (Afrikaans)De Beer, Jan Mathys 01 April 2009 (has links)
AFRIKAANS: Die Belhar Belydenis was sedert sy ontstaan in 1982 ‘n omstrede dokument in die NG Kerkfamilie. Ná die Kerkbode-debat in 1998, is Belhar al hoe meer gesien as ‘n struikelblok in die weg van eenwording. Denke oor die Belydenis het gepolariseer tussen diegene wat dit aanvaar as konfessie teenoor diegene wat dit nie aanvaar nie. Besware wat teen die Belydenis ingebring is, het te make met sy ontstaansgeskiedenis, sy status as konfessie en inhoudelike besware. Die negatiewe persepsies oor die Belhar Belydenis is diep gewortel. In hierdie studie word ‘n derde posisie voorgestel, naamlik dat die missionêre waarde van die Belhar Belydenis vir die NG Kerk genoeg rede is om die inhoud van die belydenis te ontgin, ongeag of die belydenis as konfessie aanvaar word of nie. Deur ‘n bestudering van die sendingbenadering en –beleid in die NG Kerk as historiese aanloop tot die Belhar Belydenis, word die belang van inheemswording in terme van die missie van die kerk uitgelig. Die NG Kerk het ‘n sendingbeleid rondom die negentiende-eeuse Europese teologie van inheemswording ontwikkel wat bygedra het tot die ontstaan van afsonderlike kleur-bepaalde kerke. Hierdie beleid van inheemswording het bygedra tot ‘n versmelting van kerk en volk by die Afrikaner, met ‘n verdere gevolg van toenemende isolasie, ‘n geloofwaardigheidskrisis en ‘n missionêre gevangenskap. Dit vorm die missionêre agtergrond van die Belhar Belydenis. Ongelukkig het die NG Kerk die belydenis baie negatief ontvang – saam met ‘n aanklag van kettery en afgodery. Selfs te midde van hierdie negatiewe persepsie van die Belhar Belydenis, het die belydenis nogtans ‘n vormende en bevrydende invloed uitgeoefen op die sending van die kerk tot op hede, weereens: missionêre waarde. Die leemte in die inheemswording van die NG Kerk is dat dit tot volks-inheemswording beperk was. ‘n Nasionale inheemswording-benadering word uitgewys as ‘n meer relevante uitdrukking van die missie van die kerk in Suid-Afrika, met ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse Gereformeerde kerk as oogmerk. In terme hiervan is die Belhar Belydenis ‘n instrument tot inheemswording vir die hele NG Kerk-familie. Belhar is nie die struikelblok in die weg van eenwording nie. In die herenigingsgesprekke het ‘n inwendige teenstrydigheid ontstaan, en dít is die werklike struikelblok. Verskillende benaderings tot belydenisse bring verskillende beoordelings van Belhar mee. Karl Barth se teologie van Gereformeerde belydenisse dui op ‘n derde weg uit die hereniging-dilemma. Die aanvaarding van ‘n belydenis in die Gereformeerde benadering geskied altyd in vryheid, want Gereformeerdes staan onder gesag van die Skrif en Christus alleen. Die gesag wat die Kerk aan ‘n belydenis toeken word nie ontken nie, maar eerder ontgin. Die studie sluit af met riglyne vir die ontginning van die missionêre waarde van die Belhar Belydenis, gegrond op 14 onderhoude met teoloë uit die NG Kerk en VGKSA. Die onderhoude word weergegee as stimulasie tot gesprek tussen die lede van die NG Kerk-familie, veral tussen die NG Kerk en die VGKSA. Die studie eindig met enkele praktiese riglyne vir leraars en gemeenteleiers wat die missionêre waarde van die Belhar Belydenis wil ontgin deur ‘n oop en eerlike gesprek oor die Belhar Belydenis. ‘n Verwysingsbron van aktuele temas in die Belhar Belydenis word as hulpmiddel gegee. ENGLISH: Since its inception in 1982, the Belhar Confession has been a controversial document in family of Dutch Reformed Churches. After the debate in Die Kerkbode (1998), Belhar was progressively seen as an obstacle in the way of church unity. Opinion on the Confession polarized between those who accepted Belhar as their confession and others who did not want to accept it altogether. Objections on Belhar has to do with factors surrounding its inception, its status as confession and objections on certain textual formulations. The negative perceptions of the Belhar Confession is deep rooted. This study proposes a third position, namely that the missionary value of the Belhar Confession reason enough gives to make use of the contents of the Confession, irrespective of whether it is accepted as confession or not. Through a study of the missionary approach and policy of the Dutch Reformed Churches, the importance of indigenization as mission of the church is highlighted. The Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) developed its missionary policy based on nineteenth century European theology of indigenization. This policy of indigenization, however, contributed to the formation of separate churches determined by colour. This policy of indigenization also contributed to a fusion of church and “volk” (indigenous people) of the “Afrikaner”, further resulting in isolation, a crisis of credibility and a missional imprisonment in die DRC. This is the missional background of the Belhar Confession. The DRC, however, had a very negative reception of the Confession, since it was accompanied by a charge of heresy and idolatry against this church. Nevertheless, even in the midst of this negative perception of Belhar, the Confession still had a formative influence on the mission of the church until now: hence its missional value. The shortfall in the indigenization of the DRC is that it was confined to “volks”-indigenization. A national indigenization approach is shown to be a more relevant expression of the mission of the church in South Africa, with a South African Reformed Church as objective. In terms of this, the Belhar Confession is an instrument of indigenization for the whole DRC-family. Belhar is not an obstacle in the way of church unity. In the re-unification talks, an internal contradiction appeared, which is the actual obstacle. Different approaches to confessions lead to different evaluations of Belhar. Karl Barth’s theology of Reformed confessions points to a third way out of the dilemma of the re-unification process. In the Reformed approach, the acceptance of a confession is always voluntary, because the reformed believer is only under the authority of Christ and his Word (Scripture). The authority that the church gives to a confession is not denied, but rather discovered. The study concludes with a contemporary reading of the Belhar Confession, based on 14 interviews with theologians in the DRC and the Uniting Reformed Church. These interviews are presented to stimulate a conversation between members of the DRC-family, especially between die DRC and the Uniting Reformed Church.
