How to find a great international leader : The case of Swedish Managers working in Singapore

Tham, Charlotte January 2011 (has links)
Title: How to find a great international leader – The case of Swedish Managers working in Singapore Level: Second Cycle: 15 Credit: Master Thesis in Business Administration Author: Charlotte Tham Supervisor: Maria Malama  Examiner: Akmal Hyder Date: June 2011 Aim: I’m interested in finding a way to make successful international recruitments. To do so I have worked with three research questions: What distinguish an international leader from a domestic leader? How do you recruit a successful international leader? Which personal qualities make an international leader successful?  Method: I have used a personal test (Hogan Personality Inventory) to find which personal qualities the manager has. Approx. 10 subordinates to each of the managers have answered a survey, in order to find how successful they find the managers to be. The five managers have also been interviewed twice. The first time to hear their opinion of the international leadership. The second time to follow up the result from the personal test and the survey.    Result & Conclusions: The four main results of the study are: Handling cultural differences makes the international leader special. Following a structured procedure is essential when recruiting a successful international leader. Qualities to look for are high interpersonal skills, strong sense of self, high flexibility, and strong interest in learning new things. Leaders with strong task-orientation and love for details de-motivate their subordinates.   Suggestions for future research: The study could be done on a larger sample, to get a better statistical material. It could also be done on other nationalities, or on women to see how these factors affect the result.  Contribution of the thesis: The study shows that criteria like, high interpersonal skills and flexibility have to be searched for and a structured procedure has to be followed, when recruiting international leaders. The study can help multi-national companies make better recruitments and therefore save money and time.

The Arts: An Experience : What Leaders Can Learn From Artistic Catharsis

Reinisch, Peter, Weber, Sven-Christian January 2013 (has links)
Creativity and innovation are attributes that are important in business and leadership today, perhaps more than ever. The recent economic crisis has shown that relying on pre-established business patterns is not enough anymore. Art has always been visionary and creativity is one of its major characteristics.   This thesis looks into the possible impact the arts can have on leadership. We ask ourselves what it is that we can learn from the arts, what they can teach us that is relevant for leaders and leadership. We have used the grounded theory and the methods suggested by Corbin and Strauss. We have conducted conversations with 12 leaders coming from different occupations who share at least one characteristic; they are all engaged in the arts. Through their experience, and through secondary data we used from studies concerning the impact the arts have on communities, we have constructed a theory. This shows that through their interaction with art, people are affected in their well-being, their personal development and their cognition. This phenomenon we have identified as the leader's catharsis.   We conclude our work by showing a map to show where in leadership research our substantive theory is useful. Further we also discuss how our findings can contribute to future leadership research. Our thesis might contribute to the discussions of aesthetics and leadership, the influence art has on the well-being of followers and how leaders can effectively form frames. Further, we suggest that the arts can be seen as a school for leadership development.

Le français langue étrangère dans la formation linguistique des apprentis guides touristiques vénézuéliens : pistes pédagogiques à partir de l'analyse du discours / French as a foreign language as part of training for tourist guides apprentices in Venezuela : pedagogical proposals from the perspective of discourse analysis

Machado Key, Yolibeth 18 September 2012 (has links)
The present study pertains to studies in research on language didactics. Its main objective was to make pedagogical proposals for the teaching of French as a foreign language as part of training for tourist guides apprentices in Venezuela. In order to do this, we recorded the field work of four professional guides (two French and two Venezuelans). The text corpus was transcribed using the ICOR standards (ICAR Laboratory, Lyon 2). In order to conduct a comparative analysis we employed tools such as: the use of conversational analysis, linguistic enunciation analysis and textual linguistic analyses. Such tools allowed us to determine discursive similarities and differences in the tour guides at the pragmatic, enunciative, syntactic and semantic levels.Analyses showed that the guides from the two cultural groups use the same speech acts in guided tours and use the same linguistic processes specific to oral discourse (even if written language traces are present). However, the guides use different deictics as cultural and enunciative marks. With these observations, we present models of pedagogical activities targeting the mastery of linguistic knowledge, the development of communicative skills and knowledge necessary to the tourist guide profession. These training activities include intercultural dimensions which have emerged from our analysis of interactions.

Principles for engaging learners in the construction of school newspapers

Wheeler, Odette Winnefred 16 August 2012 (has links)
It is imperative that learners leave school with a certain set of core skills, none as important as communication and technology literacy, a key driver for future workplace employment. The critical question is how to motivate pupils to participate in an interesting, challenging and creative project to improve essential communication techniques and capabilities? The rationale of the study is to enable future editors of school newspapers to create a similar environment in which the learners that are members of the editorial team will be involved in the construction of a school newspaper. The rationale of the study relating to the learners, who are part of the editorial team, is to develop 21st Century Skills and therefore enable them to overcome complicated demands that they are exposed to in the Knowledge Age. This dissertation presents a real-life, initiative to encourage active participation in the construction of a school newspaper that will develop learners’ skills and confidence and improve their oral, written and multi-media communication. The findings of this dissertation aim to prove that the group production of a school newspaper can enhance learners’ ability to participate and communicate in a group environment and equip them with essential 21st Century skills. / Dissertation (MEd)--University of Pretoria, 2012. / Education Management and Policy Studies / unrestricted

Mentorskap as metode van menslikehulpbronontwikkeling : met spesiale verwysing na die toepassing daarvan binne die Nasionale Biblioteek van Suid-Afrika

Botha, Deonie Francesca 06 1900 (has links)
Structured mentoring was identified as a method to develop the professional and personal skills of the employees of the National Library of South Africa in order to adjust to local and global changes. A conceptual framework for the study of mentoring, as developed by Hunt and Michael, was therefore critically adapted in order to investigate fully the phenomenon of "mentoring" by means of an exploratory literature review. The findings of the literature review are supported by an empirical survey to test the suitability of the National Library of South Africa as contextual environment for the application of mentoring, as well as the willingness of its employees to participate in mentoring. This culminated in an analysis and interpretation of the findings and formulation of conclusions regarding the two abovementioned requirements for the successful application of mentoring. The study ends with recommendations for further investigation into aspects of mentoring which could not be covered in this study. / Information Science / M. Inf.

A study of the integration of health promotion principles and practice in palliative care organisations

Rosenberg, John Patrick January 2007 (has links)
The modern hospice movement emerged in the 1960s as a grassroots social movement that attempted to restore an holistic and contextualised approach to the care of people at the end of life. This approach embraced the lived experience of the dying person at the centre of care across physical, emotional, social and spiritual domains of life. To achieve this, the care of dying people was largely removed from mainstream health care systems to promote more holistic and socially contextualised dying. In recent decades, the evolution of palliative care demonstrates the gradual return of palliative care services to the mainstream. It has been asserted that, in this process, palliative care services have progressively abandoned the social context of dying people, increasing instead an emphasis on "physical care [while] simultaneously de-emphasizing psychological, social and spiritual care" (Kellehear, 1999a, p.76). Kellehear and others have proposed that the repositioning of palliative care within mainstream health care systems has increased a focus upon illness and disease at the expense of health and wellbeing. Subsequently, conventional palliative care services have been criticised for not adequately locating end of life care within the social contexts in which death and dying take place. In an attempt to address this problem, Australian sociologist Allan Kellehear proposed an approach to end of life care that brought together the core concerns of palliative care with the principles and practices of health promotion (Kellehear, 1999b). Whilst their congruence is not immediately apparent, these two fields have been increasingly examined for their potential benefits in the provision of end of life care. In the current policy climate in Australia, there is an imperative to consider how end of life support services might be improved through adopting a health promoting palliative care approach. The aim of this study has been to investigate the integration of health promotion principles and practice by a selected palliative care service by examining the qualitative impact of this change on the organisation. Specifically, it endeavoured to identify the factors that advanced or impeded this integration by examining how the structures and processes of, and outcomes for, the organisation reflected a health promoting approach. To meet these aims, this study undertook an in-depth examination of the implementation of a health promoting palliative care model by a community based palliative care organisation. Based in a constructionist-interpretivist paradigm, a mixed-method (QUAL+quant), instrumental case study research design was utilised to capture multiple perspectives of the implementation process. Data collection comprised examination of 127 organisational documents, 32 in-depth interviews with staff, volunteers and consumers, 5 focus groups with staff and volunteers, and 25 carer questionnaires. Qualitative data were subject to thematic analysis, with supplementary quantitative data analysed to generate descriptive statistics. The findings demonstrated a large number of complex and interrelated enabling and impeding factors to the implementation in the case study site. These factors have been grouped into four key themes which have been examined in light of the aims of this study and the issues identified in a comprehensive review of the literature. This study found that: ◦ Conceptual congruence between health promotion and palliative care was a fundamental starting point in the implementation of a health promoting palliative care model. ◦ Where conceptual congruence was clear, activities associated with the model that were regarded as beyond conventional approaches to palliative care core business were viewed favourably by stakeholders and were less likely to encounter resistance within the organisation. ◦ When systematic approaches to organisational change, such as quality improvement systems, were rigorously applied, the impact of the transition upon stakeholders was qualitatively less. ◦ Where this transition had been effectively made, consumers, staff, volunteers and members of the wider community were seen to benefit. This study adds to the current discourse regarding the intersection between end of life support and health promotion, and provides insight into how palliative care organisations might undertake the transition from conventional models to a health promoting palliative care approach.

Osobnostní, odborné a sociální kvality projektového manažera / Personal, Professional and Social Qualities of a Project Manager

Zobačová, Denisa January 2013 (has links)
The MA thesis is divided to two basic parts. First of them is dealing with personal, social and professional knowledge of a project manager and the second one is mapping the education of soft skills at Czech universities where the subject of study "Information Studies and Librarianship" is taught. The theoretical part is devoted to project management. The attention is devoted to basic terms from project management's area, it represents the most well-known project methodologies, it defines particular roles of a project manager and most importantly the part is dealing with particular competences, which should be commanded by a project manager. The last chapter of theoretical part is devoted to an analysis of the three most well-known project methodologies. The practical part is mapping the situation at universities - namely which subjects they offer within the education of soft skills and how the teachers are working with the subject. Other activities of universities within the education and the development of soft skills are also given. Further the examples of subjects with the same topic taught at American universities are listed. In the end of thesis the recommendation how to improve the quality of teaching soft skill at Czech universities are given. And also which topics could be put among optional...
