Monitoring and Assessment of Coral Reef in Spermonde Archipelago, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

Jompa, Jamaluddin 04 1900 (has links)

Four coral reef sites were observed in Spermonde Archipelago, off Southwest Sulawesi, Indonesia The sites were located at different distances from the mainland: Kayangan reef ('affected' site) is the closest and Samalona, Barang Lompo, and Kapoposan ('comparison' sites) are successively farther from the mainland and Ujung Pandang city.

Coral cover, number of species at 3m and 1Om depths, and coral growth rates (Porites lobata) were observed to describe coral conditions. Environmental parameters suspended particulate matter (SPM), resuspended sediment, salinity, clarity, chlorophyll a, phosphate, nitrate, ammonium and o15N values ofcoral tissue (P. lobata) were also investigated to assess possible 'stress' factors on the reefs.

Average coral cover at the 'affected' site was very low (14 %), compared to the other sites: Samalona (44.3 %), B. Lompo {47.2 %) and Kapoposan {66.6 %). Also, the lowest total number ofspecies occurred at Kayangan (42 spp.), compared to the other sites: Samalona {62 spp.), B. Lompo {71·spp.) and Kapoposan (80 spp.)

Environmental parameters indicated that sedimentation and eutrophication (sewage) were the main 'stress' factors at Kayangan reef: while human disturbances such as fish bombing. anchoring. coral collection, and other activities affected Samalona and B. Lompo more. High coral cover and number of species at Kapoposan reef indicated fewer 'stress' factors.

Coral growth rates showed a different trend from coral cover and total number of species. The highest coral growth rates occurred at B. Lompo (15.9 ± 0.8 mm yr-1) followed by Kayangan, Samalona and Kapoposan. Based on environmental parameters, it seemed that coral growth rates were higher at more eutrophic reefs, but slower at certain maximum critical nutrient values.

δ^15 values of coral tissue found in this study are positively correlated with chlorophyll a, dissolved nutrients, and sedimentation rates. The high δ^(15)N values at Kayangan (8.03 ± 0.62 %) support the idea that this site was affected by human waste and sewage.
/ Thesis / Master of Science (MSc)

Whence and Whither: Acoustic Variability and Biogeography of Tarsiers in North Sulawesi

Kulander, Olivia Clare 19 March 2018 (has links)
The morning duet calls of eastern tarsiers (Tarsius spp.) in North Sulawesi were recorded and analyzed to examine the effects of geography and geologic history on their call structure. Tarsius species exhibit interspecifically variable duet calls shown to correlate with species differentiation and distribution. They are distributed across Sulawesi, a biogeographically complex island in the Indonesian archipelago, where tectonic activity and multiple glaciations during the Pleistocene generated and modified barriers to their dispersal and gene flow. Recordings were made at ten locations from November of 2012 through June of 2014. Two locations were categorized as mainland, while eight island locations were categorized as either shallow or deep, according to the distance and bathymetric depth separating them from the mainland. The first hypothesis was that tarsier calls on islands separated by depths of less than 130 meters would be more strongly correlated to calls found on the mainland than would the calls from islands separated by deeper water, due to dispersal and possible hybridizations during glaciations. There was a higher degree of similarity between the mainland locations and the shallow water islands than was found between the deep water islands and either shallow water islands or the mainland. The second hypothesis was that a stepping stone pattern of colonization would be evidenced in the acoustic structure of tarsiers from the Sangihe Arc, with each island showing vocalizations more similar to its immediate neighbors than to other islands. Since tarsiers were not found to be present on two of the islands, it was not possible to trace the entire arc as planned. It was found, however, that Sangihe (the largest island and the farthest north of the islands) was the most acoustically unique, as expected. Both genetic drift and environmental factors play a role in evolving animal communication, but I hypothesize that it is more likely the former at work in this case, as the habitats are similar, and I found no strong evidence of short term habitat adaptations or frequency partitioning. The spectral and temporal structure of the duet calls on the mainland and shallow water islands showed no clear geographical bias or patterns, suggesting that panmixia and hybridization during recurring glaciations may function in preventing subdivisions among the populations.

Dans le sillage des grands navigateurs austronésiens: anthropologie des activités maritimes des Butonais d'Indonésie / In the wake of the great Austronesian seafarers: an anthropology of Butonese maritime activities

Vermonden, Daniel 02 September 2008 (has links)
This thesis proposes a detailed analysis of Butonese maritime activities as well as a dialogue between this ethnographic case study and its Austronesian context. The analysis relies in particular on Merleau-Ponty's phenomenological analysis of perception and on Vygotsky's historico-cultural conception of cognition. Besides presenting a wealth of new data about the Butonese world (and more specifically the cia-cia linguistic area), the analysis developed here leads to major contributions about the reconstruction of the Austronesian world, the universalism-relativism debate within cognitive anthropology and the use of ethnographic methodology - emphasizing on the ethnographer's own transformation.

/ Doctorat en Sciences politiques et sociales / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Indonesian Rural Electrification : What is the most sustainable solution?

Vannucchi, Claudia January 2021 (has links)
The Sustainable Development Goal n°7 is calling for a prompt response to guarantee affordable and clean energy for all. While the electrification rate is rapidly increasing around the world, much work still remains to achieve electricity access in remote areas or Non-Interconnected Zones, such as the numerous small islands that compose Indonesia. This thesis work sought to understand which standalone microgrid design would represent the most sustainable solution for a rural electrification challenge, where the final scope is to provide 24 h/d stable and reliable electricity connection to the local communities of Sulawesi, Indonesia. To achieve such a result, two diametrically opposed microgrid layouts are outlined in terms of renewables share: a Business As-Usual Scenario, in which the microgrid is powered by a standard diesel set, and an integrated renewable-based scenario, in which the microgrid envisions the implementation of biopower, PV system and Li-ion batteries as a storage option. A thorough comparison on a series of Key Parameter Indicators (KPIs), such as Carbon Footprint, Levelized Cost Of Electricity and job creation, led to the identification of the renewable-based scenario as the most sustainable option. This system layout resulted in a biomass powered electricity production covering 80% of the total electricity demand, with the remaining 20% supplied by solar power and storage means and a LCOE of 0.18 USD/kWh. At the price of a higher upfront cost than the one of BAU case, the renewable-based alternative entitles a higher profitability when compared to the business-asusual one, together with reduced carbon dioxide emissions and a higher number of jobs directly created.

‘To Take Each Other’ : Bugis Practices of Gender, Sexuality and Marriage

Idrus, Nurul Ilmi, nurulilmiidrus@hotmail.com January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is an ethnography of Bugis marriage. It is concerned with aspects of gender, sexuality and marriage in a bilateral, highly competitive, hierarchical society. ¶ I examine the fundamental concept of siri’ in relation to gender socialisation, courtship, the importance of kinship and status in marriage, how sexuality is regulated between the sexes, sex within marriage, and the dynamics of marriage, divorce, and reconciliation. The analysis considers how Islam combines with local custom (adat) in everyday practices, and how Bugis cultural specificities are affected within the national ideology of contemporary Indonesia. ¶ This ethnography explores an interpretation of Bugis social and sexual experience through examination of the construction of gender identities and how they are manifested in marriage. The thesis explores the complementarity of gender for the Bugis. Despite the ideal of feminine passivity, I demonstrate that women exercise agency in a number of circumstances, including how they manage the sexuality of their husbands, defending siri’, the arrangement of marriage, remarrying, money management, divorce, and violent situations. I also examine the practices of illegal marriage (kawin liar) and illegal divorce (cerai liar) at local and personal levels. I analyse local and national debates on the legitimation of what is popularly known in Indonesia as ‘marriage based on religion’ (nikah secara agama) as part of the examination of Bugis marriage and marital relations. ¶ My thesis contributes to the understanding of Bugis notions of sexuality, gender and social location, and how these interact with siri’. I explore how and why violence occurs within marriage. I use a combination of informal interviews, participant observation and focus group discussions as well textual analysis of traditional manuscripts and incorporation of oral traditions.
