The problem of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a guidance-structured summer session for entering university freshmen. The performances of students entering this type of program were compared with those of students entering a traditional type of summer school. Inferences made relating to the contributions of a guidance-structured summer session to entering university freshmen were based on analyses of the following characteristics: (1) performance on standardized tests; (2) certain aspects relating to high school background; (3) academic achievement and retention at Texas A. and M. University; (4) fathers' attendance at Texas A. and M. University; and (5) fathers' occupations.

The music of Samuel Barber is well known in the vocal, piano, and string literature; however, little of his chamber music involves woodwinds, and in particular, only one work involves the woodwind quintet. Summer Music, originally commissioned as a septet, developed after the premiere of the work into the woodwind quintet version, with the assistance of the New York Woodwind Quintet. Barber is considered a contemporary .romantic. composer, evidenced through his use of lyricism. Summer Music, a standard in the woodwind quintet literature, should be included in every professional flutist's repertoire. The intent of this dissertation is to consider Barber's use of lyricism as a determinant of the form of Summer Music, as well as to compare the differences between the manuscript and the published edition.

The requirements of various educational reform movements such as No Child Left Behind and Race to the Top have left public education systems searching for ways to make sure students are reaching their highest potential. Because of the importance of accountability issues to school systems, it is important to examine ways to help students reach their potential. One tool school districts use to aid in improving student achievement is summer school. This qualitative study provides an overview of the history of summer school. Additionally, it offers a synopsis of various types of summer programs and populations often targeted by summer school. The researcher also offers a review of literature on student learning loss over the summer months. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of pre-K through third grade summer school teachers’ about the summer program in which they taught. The study emphasis was on preparation for summer school, analysis of teacher effectiveness, evaluation of the program, and teacher attitudes toward students. The participants in this study were 10 summer school teachers from a school system in northeast Tennessee. The analysis of data collected in this study introduced several themes and common patterns. Participants expressed the importance of being able to see changes in students over the course of their time in school. The value of participating in a summer school program that is different from the regular school year was found to be important to the teachers. Emphasizing that flexibility in pedagogy and fun for the students was important in making summer school successful. Participants reported that small class size aided in their ability to help the students reach their potentials. Summer school teachers in the study were found to value not just the academic activities but also enrichment activities for students during the summer program. Participants also related antidotal stories and shared situations in which summer school was helpful for particular students. These responses illustrate the significance of seeking teachers’ perceptions of the work they are doing.

Effect of historical land-use on lake-water carbon and geochemistry: : A multi-proxy study of two lake sediment profiles in Dalarna throughout the HoloceneMuthreich, Florian January 2016 (has links)
This study examines changes in lake-water total organic carbon (LW-TOC) and lake sediment geochemistry in two lakes, Stångtjärnen and Holtjärnen in (Dalarna, Sweden), during the Holocene and the role of the historic forest grazing and farming (fäbod-system). The aims of the study were to: 1. Discern the effects of natural processes on the lake’s biogeochemistry in different position in the landscape. 2. Identify the effects and differences in intensity of historic land-use on the lakes. A multi-proxy study was conducted encompassing multi-element (15) geochemistry, biogenic silica, LW-TOC, chlorophyll a and published pollen records. The first lake, Stångtjärnen, is shaped and influenced by surrounding mires, which developed shortly after deglaciation and stabilized the LW-TOC at 19 mg L-1 throughout most of the Holocene, while Holtjärnen, a small upland lake, changed from a productive lake (BSi: 35 %), low humic (LW-TOC: 8 mg L-1) to a less productive (BSi: 4 %) more humic lake (LW-TOC: 12 mg L-1) in 7300 BP. The intensification of agricultural land-use (e.g. hay-making) in Stångtjärnen reduced the concentrations of organic associated elements (Br, Cl) and LW-TOC and increased lithogenic elements (K, Ti), while Holtjärnen showed less anthropogenic influence. The comparison between the two lakes displayed the intensive influence of land-use on the Stångtjärnen catchment, showcased by changes in the sediment geochemistry, vegetation composition and the extent of the forest-grazing system in a landscape perspective. In response to the changes of the Holocene, Stångtjärnen’s mires became the main influence, while Holtjärnen was more sensitive to changes.

The study was undertaken to discover if the summer camp experience enhanced personality traits of participants in the camp program. The study was implemented at Greene Family Camp in Bruceville, Texas, during the summer of 1985. Utilized were analyses of variance and two types of factor analyses: principal-components analysis with varimax rotation and principal axis factoring with oblique rotation of factor matrices elicited. Five personality areas were analyzed--sociability, independence, achievement, environmental awareness, and spirituality. Spirituality emerged so strongly that it was removed from further analyses. Remaining personality areas emerged, but groupings of variables, especially those relating to achievement and independence, suggest an inherent commonality among the complex facets of personality. Based on these findings, the researcher recommends further investigation and careful replication.

A combined carbon and hydrogen isotope approach to reconstruct the SE Asian paleomonsoon : Impacts on the Angkor Civilization and links to paleolimnologyYamoah, Kweku Kyei Afrifa January 2016 (has links)
Changes in monsoon patterns not only affect ecosystems and societies but also the global climate system in terms of heat energy and humidity transfer from the equator to higher latitudes. However, understanding the mechanisms that drive monsoon variability on longer timescales remains a challenge, partly due to sparse paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic data. This thesis, which contributes new hydroclimate data sets for the Asian monsoon region, seeks to advance our understanding of the mechanisms that contributed to Southeast Asian summer monsoon variability in the past. Moreover, it explores how past climatic conditions may have impacted societies and ecosystems. In this study lake sediment and peat sequences from northeastern and southern Thailand have been investigated using organic geochemistry, and more specifically the stable carbon and hydrogen isotopic composition of specific biomarkers (n-alkanes, botryococcenes, and highly branched isoprenoids). The hydrogen isotopic composition of leaf waxes (δDwax) in Thailand was shown to relate to the amount of precipitation and the extent of the El Niño Southern Oscillation. Higher values of δDwax can be interpreted as reflecting relatively dry climatic conditions, whereas lower values relate to wetter conditions. The hydroclimate reconstruction for northeastern Thailand, based on the sedimentary record of Lake Kumphawapi, suggests higher moisture availability between ca. 10,700 cal. BP and ca. 7,000 cal. BP likely related to a strengthened early Holocene summer monsoon. Moisture availability decreased during the mid-Holocene, but seems to have increased again around 2,000 years ago and has fluctuated since. The high-resolution Lake Pa Kho peat sequence, which allows for a sub-centennial reconstruction of moisture availability, indicates that the wettest period occurred between ca. 700 and ca. 1000 CE whereas driest intervals were from ca. 50 BCE to ca. 700 CE and from ca. 1300 to ca. 1500 CE. Hydroclimate comparison of Pa Kho’s δDwax record with other paleoclimate records from the Asian-Pacific region suggests that El Niño-like conditions led to Northeastern Thailand being wetter, whereas La Niña-like conditions led to drier conditions. Regional hydroclimate variability also greatly influenced the Angkor Civilization, which flourished between ca. 845 and ca. 1450 CE. The shift from drier to wetter conditions coincided in time with the rise of the Angkor Civilization and likely favored the intense agriculture needed to sustain the empire. The gradual decline in moisture availability, which started after ca. 1000 years CE, could have stretched the hydrological capacity of Angkor to its limit. It is suggested that Angkor’s population resorted to unconventional water sources, such as wetlands, as population growth continued, but summer monsoon rains weakened. The 150-year long record of Lake Nong Thale Prong in southern Thailand offers insights into decadal-scale hydroclimatic changes that can be connected to the instrumental record. δDwax-based hydroclimate was drier from ~1857 to 1916 CE and ~1970 to 2010 CE and wetter from ~1916 to 1969 CE. Drier climatic conditions between ~1857 and 1916 CE coincided with oligotrophic lake waters and a dominance of the green algae Botryococcus braunii. Higher rainfall between ~1916 and 1969 CE concurred with an increase in diatom blooms while eutrophic lake water conditions were established between ~1970–2010 CE. / <p>At the time of the doctoral defense, the following papers were unpublished and had a status as follows: Paper 2: Submitted. Master of Arts / Department of English / Elizabeth Dodd / This thesis analyzes the protagonists’ pursuit of alternatives to traditionally patriarchal value through economic and ecofeminist critical lenses. The female protagonists in Prodigal Summer resist being identified through the social legacy of coverture that is still present in the small Appalachian town they live. Lusa, Deanna, and Nannie demonstrate that their socio-economic independence, acquired mainly due to their educational background, allows them not only to disconnect themselves from societal beliefs that the woman should be in the margins of the male presence, but also to interact with nature differently from others. The women’s separation from the institution of marriage and their embrace of motherhood as a matriarchal structure that mirrors the example of the coyotes’ families are studied as main examples of how they distance themselves from the other characters’ attitudes in the novel. This rejection of old ideologies of womanhood in terms of patriarchal structures and their fight for new spaces in society is also present in their struggle to physically inhabit spaces long considered male domains. Defeating the notion that women belong to the domestic space of the house, the protagonists pursue a feminist identity in much wider settings, including forests and farms. The characters’ choice to consider nature as their home demonstrates that they welcome the concept of ecology and recognize the interconnectedness present in nature. This study shows that because of the protagonists’ feminist views, they can imagine different ways to both manage the land and their families. The land ethics they acquire thus refers to humans and non-humans equally.

The aim of this study was to examine pictures from the swedish morning newspaper Barometern regarding their publication about the summer drought 2018 on two of theirplatforms; the ordinary printed newspaper and their Instagram account. The purpose of the study was to track down if there were any obvious differences aboutthe pictures that Barometern publishes in their printed newspaper and Instagramaccount. This study was conducted through a quantitative analysis with help of ancoding scheme. A delimitation was made to investigate only the publications during the four summermonths may, june, july and august. This limit was necessary with the reason to give ourstudy a relevant starting point. The result of this essay shows that in the printed version of the newspaper are they morelikely to publish pictures about the summer drought, as in the Instagram account arethey more likely to publish pictures with a positive vibe instead. A another conclusionwith this study is that almost half of the pictures that Barometern published about thesummer drought is manipulated in some way.

Aeschylus and National Socialism: Lothar Müthel's Orestie as Nazi PropagandaMaxwell, Rachel Elizabeth 01 July 2016 (has links)
This thesis analyzes the text, stage design, and historical context of Lothar Müthel's production of Aeschylus's Oresteia trilogy in 1936, which was sponsored by the National Socialist government during a broader publicity campaign during the Summer Olympics of 1936. The third play, Eumenides (Die Versöhnung in German) has democratic undertones, and therefore seems incompatible with Nazi ideology at first glance. There are three ways in which the Nazis made Müthel's adaptation of Die Versöhnung compatible. First, in the context of the Olympics, the Nazis attempted to draw a connection or relationship between modern German and ancient Greek culture, implying themselves to be successors to ancient Greece. Second, through Ulrich von Wilamowitz-Moellendorff's interpretations of the Greek word δίκη (justice), a central concept in the Oresteia, the Nazis were able to emphasize the progression of a state from a savage, chaotic period to a new, better civilization, an idea that particularly appeals to Nazi narrative owing to their own recent history with the Weimar Republic. Third, the Nazis shifted focus from the institution of the Areopagus to the role of Athena and interpreted her to be a Germanic goddess. Müthel's adaptation is a good case study in how, through appropriation, a political movement can interpret a text to fit their ideology.
