Water and Wastewater Management in the Mega City Istanbul : A General Analysis from a Supply-Demand-Reuse Perspective

With a population of over 13 million, Istanbul is one of the biggest city in Europe. The possible increase of population in the future may bring serious problems of water supply after a few decades. Therefore, it is crucial to look for good solutions to problems and potential challenges in water supply and water demand. This paper intended to investigate the currently existing problems in water and wastewater management practices in Istanbul from a supply-demand-reuse perspective; and to look for possible opportunities for a future improvement in order to achieve a sustainable urban water management system in Istanbul by promoting its wastewater management system. In this paper, two interviews of professionals, and a survey in Istanbul city area were conducted for obtaining gather primary data. Analysis of relative literatures is applied for grasping an accurate picture of water and wastewater management in Istanbul. According to the study, authorities are making great efforts to meet the ever increasing demand for water. From a supply-demand-reuse management perspective, Istanbul is still at the stage of supply management with sufficient wastewater treatment. However, there is not much sign of a demand management model, as inadequate effort has been devoted to controlling the increase of water demand. Although reuse management may still be a distant goal for Istanbul to achieve, a good preparation can be started by promoting and further improving the current wastewater management system, as wastewater reuse, if properly managed, will be the best solution that will lead to achieving long-term benefits.

Challenges of water supply management : a case of Umdoni Local Municipality, Kwa-Zulu Natal-South Africa

Thesis (M. Dev.) -- University of Limpopo, 2017 / The aim of the study was to examine the challenges of water supply management in Umdoni Local Municipality. Two methods were employed to collect data in the study. The first method involved one-on-one interviews with the participants. An interview guide was used to obtain data pertaining water supply services from a water services manager, a municipal manager and ten (10) ward councillors. The second method entailed analysis of documents within the municipality. In this study findings were based on issues such as prioritization of effective water supply for Umdoni Local Municipality, community consultation and participation, addressing capacity constrains in the Municipality such as human resources, water service infrastructure and skills development. The underlying causes of the water supply problems are based on the basic infrastructure, provision of water supply being very poor and dismal across the area. Water serves as a basic need to which everybody has the right to access, however, water supply is unfortunately disrupted by many factors. The findings in this study shows that poor water supply emanates from many factors such as management skills, technical challenges and illegal connections. This study recommends that Umdoni Local Municipality has additions of water plants, building of new reservoirs and upgrades of water pipes, especially in Amahlongwa area as it needs urgent attention.

This diploma thesis is aimed on problems of supply chain management with selected assortment. It is focused on particular ways of supply management with fresh meat, on the flow of goods from producer to final customer and analyze the impact on key performance indicators pursued by a company. In the first three parts of the thesis is described the logistics systém in Ahold Czech Republic. In the following part of the thesis, supply chain of selected assortment is analyzed in this particular company and also how it is defined in the logistics theory. It is followed by detailed analysis of the new logistic system which was proposed to launch, including the definition of critical points. Final part of this diploma thesis is devoted to summary of expected benefits and costs and to evaluation of this new logistics system according to actual results.

Water conservation and water demand management pilot project: the case of Newcastle Municipality

A research report submitted to the Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Engineering, 2016 / The Newcastle Local Municipality (NLM) has been experiencing water supply interruptions since 2010 due to high demand. Between June 2011 to December 2011, water losses ranged from 49% to 62% (about 23 to 30 megalitres per day) in Madadeni and Osizweni townships (Newcastle East). The suburban areas (i.e. Newcastle West) also experienced water interruptions due to collapsing and/or aging infrastructure. About a thousand households in Madadeni were involved in this study to find the cause of the high water losses. Awareness campaigns, repairing household leaks, installation of intelligent meters and the increase of free basic water in indigent households from 6kℓ to 12kℓ per month reduced water losses from about 246 kℓ to 177kℓ per month. If similar Water Conservation (WC) and Water Demand Management (WDM) could be rolled out to the 35 000 households in the NLM and similar results to those in Madadeni are attained, conservative water saving of about 21Mℓ per day could be achieved. This would reduce the demand on the Ngagane Water Treatment Works (WTW) by 20%. / CK2018

Los almacenes de los centros hospitalarios registran diversas problemáticas, como son: la baja rotación, el desabastecimiento y el vencimiento de material médico. En consecuencia, los pacientes no son atendidos bajo las mejores condiciones, ya que se deben reemplazar los suministros con otros similares a fin de cubrir la demanda. Este artículo tiene como objetivo reducir las entregas parciales de material médico efectuadas por el almacén central de un hospital público al servicio de emergencias. Para ello, se propone un modelo de gestión de inventarios en el que se categorizan 163 insumos bajo la clasificación ABC-VED, para posteriormente realizar el pronóstico de la demanda por cada una de las tres categorías identificadas previamente. Finalmente, se efectúa un control de inventarios compuesto por el cálculo del modelo EOQ, punto de reorden, nivel de servicio y stock de seguridad, para lograr la reducción de la problemática en un 14%. / Warehouses of hospitals centers register some problems, such as: low turnover, shortages and expiration of medical supplies. Consequently, patients are not cared for under the best conditions. In the case of hospitals, it is not possible to care for people due to the lack of hospital equipment. Therefore, the staff uses similar products to meet the demand. This article aims to reduce the partial deliveries of medical material made by the central warehouse of a public hospital, to the emergency service. To do this, an inventory management model is proposed in which 163 inputs are categorized under the ABC-VED classification, to later carry out the forecast of demand for each of the three previously identified categories. Finally, an inventory control is carried out, consisting of the calculation of the EOQ model, reorder point, service level and safety stock, in order to reduce the problem by 14%. / Trabajo de investigación

Adaptive Water Management Concepts: Principles and Applications for Sustainable Development

No / his book explores a new framework of Adaptive Water Management (AWM) for evaluating existing approaches in urban water management. It highlights the need to adopt multidisciplinary strategies in water management while providing an in-depth understanding of institutional interactions amongst different water related sectors. The key characteristics of AWM i.e. polycentric governance, organisational flexibility and public participation are investigated and described through a critical review of the relevant literature. The book presents an empirical case study undertaken in a selected developing-country city to investigate the potential gaps between the current water management approaches and possible implementation of AWM. Feasibility of AWM operations is examined in an environment surrounded by established water management structure with centralised governance and an institutional process based on technical flexibility. The key elements of AWM performance are (re)structured and transformed into decision support systems. Multi criteria decision models are developed to facilitate quantification and visualization of the elements derived from the case study, which is involved with water companies and water consumers. The book describes how the concept of AWM, along with structuring suitable decision support systems, can be developed and applied to developing-country cities. The book highlights the barriers for applying the AWM strategies that include established centralised decision making, bureaucratic interactions with external organisations, lack of organisational flexibility within the institutions, and lack of recognition of public role in water management. The findings outline that despite the lack of adaptability in the current water management in the case study, as an example of developing countries, there are positive attitudes among water professionals and the public towards adaptability through public-institutional participation.

Impact of climate change on fresh water resources of Elliot town in the Eastern Cape

Climate change and variability have great impact on the hydrological cycle and consequently on the availability of water resources. Variations in temperature and precipitation trends that are occurring are a consequent of the increase in the concentrations of greenhouse gases, which are subsequently affecting the hydrological cycle. This in turn affects water quantity and quality, which is essential for agriculture, domestic and industrial uses. This study, done in Elliot Town and the surrounding areas of Sakhisizwe Municipality in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, evaluates how climate change and variability is affecting water availability and its quality in the town. The impact climate change and variability on agricultural production is also assessed. Remote Sensing, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), databases and some statistical packages have been used to collect, analyse and create spatial maps used to derive concrete conclusions. The methods used aided in spatially analysing the changes in temperature and rainfall along the years and make a comparative analysis. The study has shown that the spatial changes in the amount, intensity and frequency of rainfall affects the magnitude and frequency of stream flows; consequently, increasing the intensity of floods and droughts that have been recurring in the last few decades. The municipality is more affected by climate variability than change, and the resultant extreme climate events are affecting the water resources resulting in domestic water cuts, poor water quality and low agriculture productivity. This study recommends the importance of an awareness campaigns on climate change and variability and their effect directed towards the community, especially on novel water harvesting technologies. The study also highlights the importance of a robust early warning system to prepare the community in case of a climate shock, which is an area that needs further research. / Environmental Sciences

Os gastos com saúde vêm crescendo em ritmo alarmante e os hospitais universitários, as unidades mais complexas dos sistemas de saúde, enfrentam grandes desafios para reduzir custos e melhorar a eficiência operacional. Considerando-se que a gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores tem grande potencial para apoiar melhorias de desempenho no setor hospitalar e, conforme indicações da literatura acadêmica, tem limitada abordagem no setor hospitalar, decidiu-se aprofundar o estudo de gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores em organizações hospitalares. Tendo-se como referência uma revisão sistemática de literatura, desenvolveu-se um framework específico para gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores em hospitais. O framework estabelece aspectos relacionados com apoio da alta administração, estrutura organizacional, infraestrutura de tecnologia de informação e capacitações dos recursos humanos como requisitos que devem ser atendidos para possibilitar a implementação de processos de gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores em hospitais. Com o auxílio do framework, foram realizados estudo de casos em quatro hospitais universitários de grande porte, dois públicos e dois privados. Nos relatórios dos casos são analisados o atendimento aos requisitos mencionados, os processos utilizados nos hospitais universitários e as dificuldades enfrentadas para a gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores. Constatou-se que os hospitais universitários privados estão mais evoluídos que os públicos na implantação de gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores. Restrições impostas pela legislação de compras públicas, políticas públicas de gestão de recursos humanos e carência de recursos financeiros para investimentos na infraestrutura de tecnologia de informação impedem que os hospitais universitários públicos consigam melhores resultados com a gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores. Este estudo contribui para preencher uma lacuna referente à abordagem de gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores em hospitais universitários e disponibiliza informações que podem auxiliar os gestores hospitalares a aprimorar a gestão de relacionamento com fornecedores. / Health spending has been growing at an alarming rate, and university hospitals, the most complex units of health care systems, face major challenges in reducing costs and improving operational efficiency. Considering that supplier relationship management has great potential to support performance improvements in the hospital sector and, as indicated in the academic literature, has received limited approach in the healthcare sector, it was decided to deepen the study of supplier relationship management in hospitals. Based on a systematic literature review, a specific framework for supplier relationship management in hospitals was developed. The framework establishes aspects related to senior management support, organizational structure, information technology infrastructure and human resource skills as requisites that must be met to enable the implementation of supplier relationship management processes in hospitals. With the help of the framework, a case study was carried out in four large university hospitals, two public and two private hospitals. In the case study reports it was analyzed the attendance to the mentioned requisites, the processes used in university hospitals and the difficulties faced for the supplier relationship management. It was verified that private university hospitals are more developed than the public ones in the implementation of supplier relationship management practices. Constraints imposed by public procurement legislation, public policies for human resources management and lack of financial resources for investments in information technology infrastructure prevent public university hospitals from achieving better results with supplier relationship management. This study contributes to fill a gap regarding supplier relationship management approach in university hospitals and provides information that can help hospital managers to improve supplier relationship management.
