Online cancer support: What the consumer has to sayRapach, Erin Elizabeth 10 July 2009 (has links)
Although the research on the effects of cancer on the patient and its impact on the family system, as well as on the benefits of support groups for this population is abundant, there is relatively little research that examines the benefits of online cancer support groups, the meaning that users attribute to giving and receiving support, and the effects of use on the user's significant other. Using the theoretical frameworks of phenomenology, and Social Interactionism online surveys were conducted with seven individuals who considered themselves active members of the online Cancer Survivors Network, were all diagnosed with cancer and living with a significant other. These surveys were coded for themes using Thematic Analysis. The main themes identified included: feeling normal, belonging to a community, hope, honest and open place to talk about fears, feelings and possibility of death, that experiencing and recovering or dealing with cancer is a process, gaining understanding, acceptance and support, as well as information, a better sense of well-being related to hope and humor, and feeling helpful. The themes that emerged when looking at the partner relationships were: feelings of jealousy, and sharing the online community with their partner. Implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research are included. / Master of Science

Etude, analyse contrastive et traduction espagnol-français des constructions à verbe support / Study, contraste analysis spanish-french and translation of light verbs constructionsMartinez Blasco, Iván 30 October 2014 (has links)
This study aims to provide some answers to three basic questions concerning light verb structures: its identification, delimitation of other combinations that share the same surface structure and a review of its classical definition. Once identified and defined the object of our study, we adopt the linguistic theory of employ (G. Gross 2012), which allows us to approach light verbs from two perspectives: the contrastive study of French-Spanish light verbs and its translation.

A study of the relationship between different types of autonomy support and student interestLee, Ji-Eun, active 2013 24 February 2012 (has links)
Representing one of the influential motivational variables on learning, interest includes both cognitive and affective components, arising from the interplay between an individual and a particular content and environment (Dewey, 1913; Hidi, Renninger, and Krapp, 2004). According to Hidi & Renninger (2004), interest can develop from situational to individual interest and be strengthened along with external support. On the basis of their propositions, this report explores how student interest may be intensified by enhancing cognitive facets of interest through the teacher’s instructional support.
From the perspective of self-determination theory (SDT), support for autonomy as a contextual factor has been reported as a catalyst for student interest and engagement. In particular, Stefanou, Perencevich, DiCintio, and Turner (2004) stressed the importance of cognitive autonomy support as an instructional support in terms of deep-level thinking and cognitive engagement in comparison to other types of autonomy support such as by providing students choice in class.
This report explores how different levels and types of student interest are associated with different types of autonomy support in an educational setting, focusing on cognitive aspects. Using a path analysis, this paper presents a full model to undergird a study of the direct and indirect relationships between student interest, different types of autonomy support, and cognitive engagement. / text

Lecture de l'interaction dans la presse féminine : de la vitrine à une solution sémiotique des médias / Reading the interaction in the women's press : From the showcase to a semiotic media solutionMekemeza, Pauline Leyonne 24 November 2017 (has links)
Women's magazines offer a universe of meaning built from interaction regimes. By interaction we mean a set of semiotic logics, programmed speeches, manipulations of manipulative / manipulated subjects, strategic adjustments with sensitivity and accidents characterized by randomness and lacking in competence. Our research based on three fundamental components, title-logo, photography and textual statements, aims to read the first cover in light of the showcase methods. These magazines practices based on the desire to seduce readership as a mediation between two spaces, trademarks, editorial identity, associated with the semiotics of body, clothes and passions, are particularly appealing to us. Our goal is to focus on the meaningful sets that make sense in front cover and participate in the construction of a showcase life form, based on specific practices. We propose the interaction regimes as the organizing nucleus of the semiotic situations of the magazine. As a discursive quantity because of its heterogeneity, the question is that of a specific reading practice inscribes a specific semiotic practice linked to action. Consequently, the fundamental components, the semiotic values of the magazine, the instances of mediation between two spaces, the types of valorisation, the cognitive operations linked to the body, the clothing, the passional motions, make it possible to establish the showcase as the instrument recognition even of a reading practice specific to media. To do this we have selected some of the first covers we have analyzed that have served us to present the common magazine life form showcase.

Nominal predicates of the malagasyJaozandry, Marie 05 May 2014 (has links)
AThis thesis is part of the work of L.D.I (Lexiques, Dictionnaire, Informatique) of the University of Paris 13 on the description of the nominal predicates. We study the predicative constructions of the Malagasy by comparing them with those of the French, the language for which was proposed the development of a methodology appropriate to the description of its structures. The first chapter presents the descriptive tools and a short description of the Malagasy language. The second chapter provides an overview of the research done on «verbs supports», both in French and Malagasy, with particular emphasis on the importance of nominal determination. The choice of «verbes supports» depends on the nature of the nominal predicates which are thus divided into three classes : actions, states and events. This classification specified in the third chapter (predicates of actions), in the fourth chapter (predicates of states) and in the fifth chapter (event predicates). In each chapter, some accuracy substantives prototypes were described, according to consistent criteria which are syntactically based. It thus highlights that «verbs supports» are only one part of discounting nominal predicates, along with determination and aspectual adverbs or adjectives. This thesis provides a framework for a future more comprehensive study of the Malagasy nominal predicates.

The Development and Psychometric Testing of an Inventory to Measure Health-Focused Perceived Family Support and Communication Behaviors with Chronic Disease Patients: A Three-Phase StudyHarsin, Amanda M. 06 1900 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Hospitals and policymakers acknowledge the importance of the family in
improved healthcare outcomes. Although there has been an increase in policies and
research to bring families into planning, delivery, and evaluation of healthcare, there has
not been a means to assess health-focused perceived support and communication
behaviors. Without a means of assessing these factors, healthcare professionals cannot
succinctly evaluate support and communication in a family system or provide
recommendations for engaging family members in providing beneficial health-focused
support and communication. This study involved the creation of the Inventory for Family
Health-Focused Perceived Support and Communication Behaviors (Family HF-PSCB).
Informed by family systems theory, social support literature, and health communication
behaviors research, this three-phase study consisted of (a) generating items for the Family
HF-PSCB, (b) establishing test-retest reliability, and (c) establishing a factor structure
and convergent validity. Because of the increase of chronic disease in the United States,
the Family HF-PSCB was created and tested with samples of individuals having chronic
disease(s).
Using a mixed methods approach, in-depth interviews with 12 participants
generated 91 items for psychometric analysis. These items were tested through expert
content review, and in pilot testing (n = 23), the remaining 84 items demonstrated test-
retest and internal reliability. Through factor analysis (n = 209), two factors emerged to
explain 72.1% of the variance. The final Family HF-PSCB contains 13 items, which
indicates an individual’s perception of family health-focused support and communication
behaviors. The factor explaining 63.2% of the variance has 8 items demonstrating healthfocused
communication behaviors, and the second factor has 5 items demonstrating
health-focused instrumental support. The developed scale suggests that family healthfocused
communication behaviors may be a more explanatory variable in the family
system for someone with chronic disease(s). The 13-item Family HF-PSCB demonstrates
convergent validity through significant correlations with the Perceived Social Support
Family Scale and the General Functioning Scale of the McMaster Family Assessment
Device. Future studies should explore the correlation of the Family HF-PSCB with health
outcomes attributed to symptom management in populations of chronic disease patients.

Examining the Layers of Beginning Teacher Retention: A Cross-Case Analysis at the Elementary LevelAlexander, Rebecca Jean 23 April 2008 (has links)
The cross-case analysis described in this study examined the patterns of practice that support the beginning teacher in the elementary school environment of a large suburban school district. Bronfenbrenner’s (1976) systemic model of the educational environment as a series of nested, interacting sub-systems was used as a compass for this study. Data were collected beginning in the exo-system and continued through the meso-system and micro-system of the educational environment. Interviews with central office staff at the exo-system level, with the school administrator at the meso-system level, and with beginning elementary teachers at the micro-system were the primary means of data collection. Interview data were collected from three beginning teachers in the elementary school with the largest number of beginning teachers in the district, the principal of the school, and central office personnel. Evolving display matrices were the primary strategy for data analysis. Themes were identified at each level of the educational environment. Findings reveal consistent themes within the levels of the elementary school environment. / Ed. D.
