An Exploration of Irish Surname History through Patrilineal Genetics

Stephanie Farmer (5931041) 16 January 2020 (has links)

Due to Ireland’s secluded geographical location, its genetic structure is a popular topic of study. The indigenous inhabitants of Ireland remained undisturbed for a long period time, allowing for a distinct genetic population to be created. This peace was disrupted by conflict with invading forces, such as the Nordic Vikings and Anglo-Norman forces. However, these historical events helped to shape both the culture of Ireland and the ancestry seen in the Irish population today. In Ireland, quite like many countries around the world, the male’s surname is passed from father to son, just as the Y-chromosome. The relationship between Irish surnames and their corresponding Y-haplogroups was examined to determine if common and rare Irish surnames can be genetically linked to the historical invasions listed above. The surnames chosen for this study were selected based on their prevalence in Ireland, rare or common, and their proposed historical origin, Irish, Norse or British. To discover any possible patterns in surnames and Y-chromosomal DNA, Y-haplogroups were generated from the DNA of 630 Irish male subjects using an assay specifically developed for the region. The assay contains twenty single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) that were selected to further resolve the R1b-L21 Y-haplogroup for Irish ancestry, the most prevalent haplogroup in Western Europe, and Ireland in particular. Additional Y-STR data was also generated to examine recent surname history within the collected individuals. Each surname was examined to determine whether one haplogroup occurred more frequently and with this method, distinct patterns in Irish surnames and geographical locations were discovered. In addition to resolving Y-surname history patterns, it is also believed that this assay may be beneficial in determining if an unknown DNA sample is of Western European origin and even in some cases, if a more specific Irish origin can be predicted.

Nontraditional name changes for men: Attitudes of men and women.

Millspaugh, Jennifer Diane 05 1900 (has links)
Recently, some men have taken their wives' last names upon marriage rather than following tradition. The goal of this study was to examine the attitudes that men and women have toward these nontraditional men. Ideological hegemony and social identity theory comprised the framework for examining participants' beliefs. A survey first elicited participants' extant sexist beliefs about men and the characteristics of a nontraditional man compared to a traditional man. An open-ended question further explored participants' opinions. The results indicated that benevolent sexism influences respondents' attitudes towards nontraditional men and that most respondents view nontraditional men as more nurturing and committed to their marriage than traditional men. The results further revealed a dichotomy of positive and negative attitudes towards nontraditional men indicating that society's feelings about nontraditional men are changing.

A basic approach to the mathematical formalism of graphs is developed and then main theoretical models for complex networks are presented aiming to support the analysis of surnames networks models. These, in turn, are worked so as to be drawn leading quantities, such as aggregation coefficient, minimum average path length and connectivity distribution. Based on these quantities, it can be stated that surnames networks are an example of complex network, showing important features such as preferential attachment and small-world character / Neste trabalho ? apresentado um estudo das redes sociais baseado na an?lise dos nomes de fam?lias. "Att blotta vem jag är" : Släktnamnsskick och släktnamnsbyten hos samer i Sverige 1920–2009 / ‘Laying bare who I am’ : Surnames and changes of surname among the Sami of Sweden, 1920–2009

Frändén, Märit January 2010 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to describe surname patterns and changes of surname among the Sami of Sweden. It presents the results of three studies. The first is a survey of the present-day stock of surnames (family names) among the Sami community, based on the 2005 electoral register for the Swedish Sami Parliament. It investigates the proportions of names deriving from different languages, and the commonest names in each group. The same study was carried out for different areas, showing that the northernmost parts of Sweden have a Sami name stock significantly different from that of the majority population. Further south, the stock of names is less marked, but no area is without Sami elements. The second study, based on archival material, concerns changes of name by Swedish Sami to newly formed surnames, over the period 1920–2004. It examines not only the names adopted, but also the ones replaced; how the name stock has been affected by different patterns of name change; and, as far as possible, who the name changers were. The study shows that, for a long time, names derived from Sami and Finnish were replaced with names formed from Swedish. This may be largely because of the stigma once attached to Sami ethnicity. More recently, Sami-language names seem to have been retained to a greater extent, possibly owing to the improved status of the culture. The third study looks at name changes in favour of names marked as Sami in character. The data consist in part of archive materials, but above all of interviews with three Sami informants who have themselves adopted Sami-language surnames. This study presents the informants’ thoughts on ethnicity and changes of name. In addition to the author’s own studies, the thesis includes a review of earlier research on Sami surnames, hereditary and non-hereditary, and a list of individual surnames with literature references regarding their origins and meanings. In the thesis, name changes are studied as a single, overall process, with an emphasis on the role of names in society, in particular as ethnic markers.
