Barajas-Garrido, Gerardo 28 September 2011 (has links)
My research deals with fantasy and the fantastic as genres, as well as with their subgenres. I propose a new genology for fantasy and fantastic literature and their subgenres in which they are part of a continuum, with fantasy standing on one end and mimetic literature standing on the other, the fantastic being their middle ground. Within this continuum, the subgenres – which I call fantasy marvel-fiction and fantastic marvel-fiction, fantasy science-fiction and fantastic science-fiction, fantasy surrealism and fantastic surrealism – are distinguished among themselves according to two axes, namely: a) the inner coherence or incoherence of the world the text presents – their being subjected or not to the laws of that world –; b) the nature, and the appropriate explanation – marvelous or scientific –, of the phenomenon that breaks the natural laws of the reader’s known real world. This relationship between reality and fantasy has been essential to my investigation. More specifically, what I have named “the scientific urban gaze” of reality has been the touch-stone to establish what is fantasy and what is not and to create the consequent genology. The genology I propose must therefore be pragmatic: the reader’s view of reality must be taken into account in the process of placing a text within this continuum and the proper genre and subgenre. Once the genology is fully explained, I compare it to the work of some of the most prominent critics on the field of fantasy and the fantastic in order to see similitudes and differences between their research and mine. For the validity of my genology to be demonstrated, I apply it in the analysis of some Mexican narrative works and show how the genre and subgenre of a text – in interaction with the text’s archetypes and narrative components – can be an effective means to convey ideology or worldview. The genological approach, therefore, integrated with an archetypal and a narratological one, constitutes an efficient tool for a holistic semiotic analysis. Notwithstanding that in my thesis I apply it to literary works, it can also be applied to cinema and theatre.

Através do surrealismo e o que Alice encontrou lá / Through surrealism and what Alice found there

Peliano, Adriana Medeiros 16 April 2012 (has links)
This dissertation presents another adventure of Alice through more than a century of pictures and conversations (and what is the use of a book without pictures and conversations?, thought Alice to herself). The travel departs from the boat trip where the story of Alice was first told, arriving to the adventures of the girl in the web-land in contemporary world. The illustrations by John Tenniel and Lewis Carroll present the Victorian Alice, contrasting Carroll\'s influences of romanticism and pre-Raphaelism with the caricatures and intertextual procedures of John Tenniel\' illustrations. In a second moment the girl jumps from the book of children\'s stories to the book of poetic images, traveling through a maze where she will find several surreal Alices. Femme enfants, collages, poetic images, metamorphosis, surreal objects and the marvelous are paths crossed in this adventure. In the third part Alice travels in the contemporary world where illustration gets more complex and challenging contours. Art and illustration are on the trail of the girl of many faces.

A poética de Manoel de Barros e a relação homem-vegetal / Manoel de Barros\'s poetic creation and the relation man-vegetal

Reiner, Nery Nice Biancalana 07 February 2007 (has links)
The current thesis is a choice, among many roads, of a research initiated during the Master´s course. The M.A.´s dissertation, defended in 2000, is the Faculty of Philosophy, Letters and Human Sciences, at the Universidade de São Paulo, under the supervision of Professor Dr. Maria Lúcia Pimentel de Sampaio Góes, was entitled O Reino Vegetal e o Imaginário: comparação entre mitos do Leste do Mediterrâneo, narrativas indígenas brasileiras e textos literários da Cultura Ocidental Européia (ênfase em Portugal e Brasil). The chosen path this time has been the detection of the influence of vegetals in Manoel de Barros´s poetic creation. Through the observation of the world of plants, the depiction of Manoel de Barros´s phitomorphic poems, related to vegetals and the comparasion to visual and verbal texts, we shall focus on possible similarities and or differences. This work is structured in two comparative groups: 1 Brazilian, Portuguese and African of the Portuguese language authors. We have chosen works by authors such as Cecília Meireles, Murilo Mendes, Lúcia Pimentel Góes, Caetano Veloso, Fernando Pessoa, Herberto Hélder, Ruy Cinatti, Rui Knopfli, João Melo and others. 2 Visual texts by Arcimboldo, Italian painter, Van Gogh, Dutch, René Magritte, Belgian and Frida Khalo, Mexican. According to the 2000 Master´s dissertation, this work has its basis upon three centers of interest, which follow the main tendencies that appear in Mircea Eliade´s studies on myths related to diverse peoples ´ vegetals: a) The identification of trees to the cosmos. b) The identification of trees to men. c) Paradise´s nostalgia. These centres of interest are plurally intertwined. Moreover, they are here mixed with such elements as Earth, Air, Fire and Water, involving the three cosmic levels: the Subterranean, Terrestrial and Celestial worlds.

O teatro inovador de Natália Correia /

Abib, Joagda Rezende. January 2010 (has links)
We know that, the theatre is not so much studied in Brazilian Universities. And if this happens here in Brazil, what can we say about the plays that were produced in Portugal during the 20 century? And what can we say about those plays that are considered marginal among the contemporary theatre? We sure don't hear almost anything about the dramatic literature produced by Portuguese women during the difficult period of the salazarista dictatorship. But, at least one of the women who tried to insert their names among the theatre that was produced during this period, deserves being highlighted because of the plays she wrote. Natália Correia wrote poems, novels essays and plays and she is known around the world especially as a poet, but she should be known as a playwright as well because of her singular plays that show formal innovation. The large quantity of scenic resources used by the playwright in her plays and some characteristics from the Surrealism and the Theatre of the Absurd show that she is linked to these aesthetics. Our aim in this dissertation is to study two of the plays written by Natália Correia - O homúnculo (1964) e O Encoberto (1969) intending to show all their component elements, relating them to the Surrealism and the Theatre of the Absurd and show the formal innovation which is one of the main characteristics of her plays / Mestre
