Applications aux piscines couvertes / Modelling of chlorination by-products formation in indoor swimming pools

Tsamba, Lucie 25 September 2018 (has links)
The formation of chlorination by-products in swimming pools depends on many kinetic and hydraulic parameters. This study presents the development of a predictive model for the formation of chlorination by-products as well as their water-to-air transfer. The model is based on the coupling of kinetic rates determined in batch with hydraulic models which describe the flows in the basin. A pilot pool unit has been built in order to collect experimental data for the calibration and validation of the models. Moreover an analytical method by Membrane Inlet Mass Spectrometry has been assessed. The representativeness and the reproducibility of experiments performed on the pilot pool unit have been described. Kinetic rates for chlorine consumption, chloroform formation and dichloroacetonitrile formation have been studied at lab scale, based on chlorination experiments of a Body Fluid Analogue, a mix of chemicals which reproduces human intakes in swimming pools. The hydraulic behavior of the basin has been modeled by a series of ideal reactors. The model has been validated by comparison with tracer-based experiments. Finally, water-to-air transfer rates have been determined and compared with models from the literature. The modeled parameters were satisfactorily modeled. Moreover the pilot pool unit has been demonstrated to be useful in calibrating models or in assessing treatment solutions.

Caracterização de isolados de Acanthamoeba em água de piscinas da cidade de Porto Alegre, RS / Characterization of Acanthamoeba isolates in swimming pools water at the city of Porto Alegre, RS

Caumo, Karin Silva January 2009 (has links)
Water samples were collected from both heated and unheated swimming pools in the city of Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil between May 2006 and March 2007, to determine the presence of Acanthamoeba in the water of swimming pools as well as perform the phenotypic and genotypic characterization of the isolates. Amoebae were isolated in monoxenic culture with Escherichia coli. The identification of the isolates was based on the trophozoites and cysts morphology and on the amplification through PCR with genus-specific oligonucleotides. The potential pathogenic was assessed by osmotolerance and temperature tolerance assays. From the 65 samples analyzed, 13 (20%) were positive for free-living amoebae, and the isolates morphologically identified as belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba. Out of these, 9 presented characteristics compatible with morphological group II, and 4 with group III. All the morphologically identified isolates, when submitted to PCR, were confirmed as belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba, and 38% (5/13) of the isolates were considered potentially pathogenic according to osmotolerance and temperature tolerance assays. In this study, the molecular RAPD method (Random Amplified Polymorphic-DNA) was used to investigate the genetic relationship among 13 isolates from swimming pools and two strains from the ATCC reference. From the ten decameric oligonucleotides tested, four were selected for generating products of amplification possible to be analyzed. The similarity between isolates was calculated using the Jaccard coefficient and the dendrogram constructed by using the method of the average distances between groups ("Average Linkage"). Four distinct groups (G1-G4) of isolates were separated according to genetic similarity between them. It was suggested that the isolates from G1 once group up with the reference isolates of A. castellanii may belong to this species. The phenotypic data such as morphology and tolerance tests were related to RAPD genotypic data and led to the characterization of isolates. The results of this study about isolation and characterization of Acanthamoeba in swimming pools water at Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil confirm the presence of potentially pathogenic isolates which can present risks to human health.

The Gay Bath-house - a Case Study of a Potential Gay-Bathhouse at Liljeholmsbadet

Östlund Stockman, Edwin January 2021 (has links)
This case study was written to explore the different branches of queer theory and its links to the architecture of bath-houses. This, from both a historicaland a modern-day societal perspective. By implementing researcher Katarina Bonnevier’s queer theory on performativity and cross-cladding, I aim to investigate how the swimming pool and the bath-house can be re-envisioned.Throughout the country, the need for renovating and extending the existing portfolio of swimming pools and bath-house institutions has grown large. Meanwhile, thenumber of queer spaces in the city of Stockholm has over the years diminished. Therefore, I have chosen Liljeholmsbadet at Södermalm, an institution currently facing demolition, as subject of this case study and I propose a reinvention of it into a gay bath-house.Through literary research, observations, and studyvisits to public bath-houses, I will analyse the swimmingpool and what role it has played in society and in the queer community.Subsequently, using Bonnevier’s theoretical framework,I will redesign Liljeholmsbadet and dissect this new gay bath-house’s different components. By “queering” the already-built, this thesis speculates on what lies in the future of the bath-house.This diploma project is not to be viewed as a finished design proposal or an answer to a question, but as a starting point for further discussions. The thesis is split in two parts, a theoretical background as a framework, and a design proposal.

Swimming Pool on top of High-Rise Buildings : A comparison of different structural designs and positions of swimming pools

MUSINOVIC, ERVIN, CARLSSON, MATHIAS January 2021 (has links)
This thesis is about determining the risks of positioning swimming pools on top of high-rise buildings.Pursuing this determination, computational simulations of constructed structural models in a finiteelement model software called RFEM have been analyzed. In further pursuit of wanted results comingfrom the computational software, the models have acquired relevant theory regarding both swimmingpools and high-rise buildings respectively to obtain realistic approximations of equivalent results if themodels were real life structures. Thence analytical observations and measures of each structural modelcontaining different positions of the swimming pools are generated, in several degrees, differentpossibilities of risks of failure are possible. Results have been compared out of design of swimmingpools and high-rise buildings in an initial stage of background and thereafter set as input values for themodeling where following perspectives have been analyzed:• Structural deformations,• Internal forces,• Utilization ratios, and• Mode shapes.Further analysis of social-, economic-, and environmental sustainability have been deliberated. Thus,in conclusion of this thesis, swimming pools positioned on top of the structure core or at center of theplan section tend to harm the stability of the structure likewise if the positioning of the swimming poolare cantilevered completely over the edge of the rooftop. More suitable design would either bepositioning the swimming pool attached to the core of the structure meanwhile cantilevered over theedge or integrated entirely along the edge. The results showed that some of the overhanging swimming pools pass the requirements of theEurocode. This will result in the columns experiencing a utilization which exceed its capacity. Thecolumn utilization was shown to behave differently depending on where the swimming pool was placedon the top floor. Furthermore, it was also a difference between the structures studied as dimensions ofthe members required either more or less depending on the form the structure had. The reaction of theswimming pool could be observed to behave as a stiff part of the structures with the deformation mostlybeing located at the slabs. The internal forces developed in the members due to the swimming poolaffected the columns at the bottom floors the most. The thesis finally shows how much is needed forthe worst case of each structure to pass the requirements. This resulted in different dimensions for themembers where the smaller structure (structure model 1) needed bigger dimensions and the largerstructure (structure model 2) needed smaller dimensions compared to the originally based dimensions. The social, economic, and environmental impact of the structures showed that the larger structureswould release more carbon dioxide than the smaller structures. The social aspect was treated moreregarding the safety and the experience of the user of the facility of swimming pool. The reinforcementvaried the most between the structures with the concrete being mostly the same for the two differentstructures made, in which an impact was made for both the economic and the environmental. Here itwas shown that in order to pass the requirements of the Eurocodes the impact on the climate needed tobe considerable different.

Aquatic phobias permeated through African American culture, economics, and politics

Unknown Date (has links)
This Project involves looking at African American culture as it relates to swimming, water safety awareness, and water skills. The paper explores the myths and cultural norms associated with drowning phobias in African Americans to discover the root causes. Through historic accounts of African American culture one begins to uncover reasons why this culture became, in a sense aqua phobic. The paper will show what water sport professionals are up against, when working with a culture that is several generations removed from the water and their water skills. The ultimate goal is to draw attention to the importance of water safety and the ability to swim as a life skill. / by Jon Eric Groover. / Vita. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2011. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction.
