Improving Walking in Individuals with Parkinson's Disease Through Wearable TechnologyThompson, Elizabeth Diane January 2018 (has links)
Movement problems related to Parkinson’s disease (PD) have been shown to have a profound effect on functional independence and reported quality of life. Within the constellation of movement signs of PD (tremor, muscle rigidity, bradykinesia/hypokinesia, and postural instability), impaired arm swing is often the earliest-recognized symptom. It is also a strong independent predictor of greater fall risk and morbidity/mortality risk. Early treatment for movement problems such as impaired arm swing is associated with the greatest improvement in these impairments. However, movement problems often coincide with impaired processing of sensory information, leaving many people with PD with inadequate awareness of their posture and limb position. Thus, PD-related gait deficits are difficult for people to correct by themselves. External cueing techniques (such as visual cues in the environment or auditory cues for pacing and rhythm) have shown promise in improving parameters such as gait speed, s / Kinesiology

Civilized Dancing: The Evolution of Ballroom Dancing from African Trance and Folk DanceHolden, Patsy 01 January 2007 (has links)
In the year 1900, ballroom dancing consisted of mainly the Waltz, the Polka, and a few other folk dances that had lasted since the late seventeenth century. For over a century, the Waltz had been the favorite dance of ballroom dancers, who typically consisted of the upper class white society. Religious organizations were very much apposed to the Waltz and all ballroom dances, claiming that ballroom dancing was the work of the devil. At the beginning of the twentieth century, ballroom dancing began to change dramatically as Americans found themselves intrigued by other cultures, especially African trance and folk dancers in the Americas. Now, one century later, ballroom dancing consists of over thirteen dances that are highly defined and have many roots in the African culture.
In this thesis, I show that ballroom dancing has traditionally been a mostly white (and historically elite white) style of dance whose roots lie deep within the African slave trade and the traditions, rituals, and music that Africans brought with them across the Atlantic. Despite the historically white-dominated society in the Americas, ballroom dancing would not be what it is today had it not been for elements of African culture transcending racial lines and being incorporated into white culture. I hope to demonstrate that ballroom dancing was an exercise of taking many elements of African music and dance and blending them with the conservative mannerisms of the elite white class, thus creating what the latter would consider "civilized dancing."

Do Wedge Issues Matter?: Examining Persuadable Voters and Base Mobilization in the 2004 Presidential ElectionTaylor, James Benjamin 21 April 2009 (has links)
In the 2004 Presidential Election social and wedge issues were among the most publicized mobilization tools utilized by the Bush Campaign. Specifically, same-sex marriage has been suggested as a key wedge issue that may have mobilized voters, although research differs on its impact. My contention is that these previous studies miss the point with regard to wedge issues, which is that they are useful on persuadable voters, and persuadable voters live in swing states. I estimate a logit model using 2004 American National Election Studies survey data. I utilize voters’ decisions to turn out as the dependent variable and control for respondents’ positions on terrorism, the economy, same-sex marriage, political interest, party identification, and socio-economic status. These findings demonstrate, consistent with my hypothesis, voters in swing same-sex marriage ballot measure states were more likely to turn out. These voters may not have been persuadable, but rather the Republican base.

Oceňování swing opcí na trzích elektrické energie / Swing option valuation on electricity and natural gas marketsUher, Martin January 2013 (has links)
Swing options had been part of natural gas market before its embedded option feature was appreciated. The flexibility of delivery is valuable because of characteristic features of energy commodities as non-storability, high frequency of events and seasonality. Swing options enable this flexibility. Holder of the option is allowed to react to market situation in flexible way and change the amount of delivery up or down in some known intervals. Total deviation from negotiated amount can't exceed some boundaries in case of "take-or-pay" condition. It is not unique general valuation form of such flexible contracts as swing options. General definition of Longstaff Schwartz Least Square approximation method (LSM) is provided at first. Then it is shown other standard valuation concept as finite difference method. It is also mentioned tree method and more complex dynamic stochastic programming method. Analysis of energy commodities time series of central Europe is done and it is shown example of LSM approach use in valuing swing option with underlying asset of base load electricity in Czech Republic.

[en] VOLTAGE STABILITY ASSESSMENT CONSIDERING PRIMARY FREQUENCY CONTROL AND FREQUENCY-DEPENDENT LINE PARAMETERS / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DAS CONDIÇÕES DE ESTABILIDADE DE TENSÃO CONSIDERANDO A REGULAÇÃO PRIMÁRIA E PARÂMETROS DA REDE VARIÁVEIS COM A FREQUÊNCIADIANA MARGARITA GARCIA MARTINEZ 05 January 2016 (has links)
[en] The growing demand for electricity increases the complexity of electric
power systems which, when combined with limitations in the expansion of
transmission systems, results in the operation of electrical systems closer to their
limits, making them vulnerable to voltage stability problems. In this context, there
is a gap in the market for the development of computational tools that can
represent the electrical systems more appropriately, thereby improving the
conditions of analysis. The present study formulates three non-classical load flow
representations: multiple swing buses, primary frequency control, and frequency
dependent transmission network parameters. Once used in the load flow problem
solving, these models are also extended to allow the calculation of voltage
stability indices of load buses, controlled voltage buses and swing buses.
Numerical tests with a 6-bus test system are presented to verify the applicability
and adequacy of the proposed models.
