No. of bitstreams: 1 Marcela Cordeiro Felix de Lima.pdf: 688841 bytes, checksum: 45b6ee32e268556ff12947294eeaa311 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-09-14 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / The present work sought to understand the experience of swing men identifying the logic of swing, the reasons that lead to swing, the gender beliefs and the perceptions about jealousy. For this purpose, a qualitative research was carried out, through semi-structured interviews, subsequently submitted to a thematic analysis. Three men were selected for this research, with an average age of 42 years, college level, married or in stable union who participated in virtual communities exclusively destined to the swinger public. The results indicate that swing offers a masculinized experience of sexuality by imposing the separation between sex and feelings. The rules of the environment and practitioners have the role of sustaining the belief that it is possible to manipulate what constitutes human affection, preventing the formation of bonds. Failures to achieve the formation of bonds are attributed to individual problems, making swing not only reproduce heteronormative patterns but also perpetuate them. The interviewees presented a positive view of the swing and pointed out positive points that overcame the eventual problems of adaptation and conviviality with other swingers / O presente trabalho buscou compreender a experiência de homens praticantes de swing identificando a lógica do swing, os motivos que levam ao swing, as crenças de gênero e as percepções acerca do ciúme.

La Musique dans l'œuvre de Boris Vian / The Music in the works of Boris Vian

Bao, Cheng 12 April 2019 (has links)
As a novelist, jazz critic, trumpet player, singer and artistic director, Boris Vian is a versatile man recognized diversely. Omnipresent in his life, the music has given him a keen sense that is certainly part of his originality as a writer. This research aims to investigate the importance of music in his literary universe, as well as the efforts he has devoted to bringing the two arts closer together. By taking a broad view of music as Vian, we have discovered a world where the writer inscribes the art of Euterpe in many ways : by the spaces, the instruments, the musicians and the pieces interpreted or quoted. The elements borrowed from jazz have a decisive influence on Vian's novel writing. Boris Vian himself recognizes the importance of music in his "jazz-writing", which is always rhythmic and improvisatory, free and inventive. In the work of fiction, music exerts its influence from the stylistic detail to the macroscopic structure. The first part of our study concerns the explicit presentations of music in his fiction while the following part continues the exploration in a more implicit dimension.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 4700874 bytes, checksum: 46c2a6f8e964ef27528032f70c3c3f18 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2015-04-07 / This work consists in the analysis of swing while an event that provides a set of developments related to the subjectivation processes in sexualities and conjugalities in the contemporary world. To do it, I had tried to understand how linked networks are formed to the swing sex from two specific paths: the analysis of on-line sex networks, with a focus on Sexlog (sex social network on the internet); and networks of sex off line, with attention to parties and establishments dedicated to the subject (houses and swing clubs). As one of the main points, "swing" category's labor in Brazil as a generic term used to discuss a set of sexual practices that do not summarize the practice of exchanging couples. It has important consequences, in respect to how this time, the swing event, it makes possible to think of other joints in relation to categories related to swing as the gender, sexuality and the subjectivation processes from those who practices them. In this sense, the swing would be a sexual/social event that would make the suspension or the temporary decrease of moral codes at the same time that would allow the emergence of other desires unlinked to morality, possible made through secret, intimacy and the shuffling points concerning sexuality.

Drying Butanol Using Biosorbents in a Pressure Swing Adsorption Process

2016 February 1900 (has links)
A significant challenge in large scale industrial production of butanol is its low product titer. Butanol needs to be purified to higher than 99% purity in order to be used for fuel applications. The focus of this study is to selectively remove water from butanol-water vapor to achieve fuel grade butanol in a pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system using biosorbents developed from agricultural byproduct canola meal (CM). CM was characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) that CM contains polar groups such as hydroxyls, carboxyls, and amines in cellulose, hemi-cellulose and protein that have the potential for water adsorption. Physico-chemical characterizations were also done to understand the major composition, elemental make-up, devolatilization characteristics and particle size distribution of the CM used. The results demonstrated that biosorbent based on CM was able to successfully dry lower grade butanol and generate fuel grade butanol of over 99 v/v%. Five operating parameters were studied at two different levels to get the optimum process conditions for butanol drying, including temperature (95 and 111°C); pressure (135 and 201 kPa); feed butanol concentration (55 and 95 v/v %); feed flow rate (1.5 and 3 mL min-1) and particle size of adsorbent (0.425-1.18 mm and 4.7 mm pellets). Orthogonal array design (OAD) tool was used to design experiments and to evaluate the effects of these parameters. The performance of butanol dehydration was evaluated using five indices - water uptake; butanol uptake; water selectivity; butanol recovery; and maximum effluent butanol concentration in the effluent. The results demonstrated that feed butanol concentration, temperature and pressure were found to be the most significant factors overall, affecting most of the indices. The effects of individual operating parameters on each butanol dehydration index were determined and a set of optimum operating conditions were proposed by the range analysis of the orthogonal array design at 111oC, 135 kPa, feed butanol concentration of 55 v/v%, feed butanol-water liquid flowrate of 3 mL/min and biosorbent particle size of 0.43-1.18 mm. The experiments conducted at the above mentioned optimum conditions resulted in water uptake of 0.48 g/g-ads, water selectivity of 5.4, butanol recovery of 90%, and the maximum butanol concentration in the effluent being over 99 v/v% , which are better than that obtained at any other conditions investigated in this work. The Dubinin–Polanyi model based on adsorption potential theory displayed a goodness of fit to the water adsorption isotherm data with a r2 value of 0.95 and average relative error of just 3.5%. The mean free energy determined from the model was 0.02 kJ/mol indicated the adsorption is physical. Thermodynamic parameters were also evaluated which revealed that the water adsorption is exothermic and spontaneous. Water saturated adsorbent was regenerated at 110°C under vacuum and reusability was studied. The contribution of two major components of CM namely cellulose and protein were also examined for their capability to selectively remove water from butanol. The results showed both of them were able to dry water, however cellulose was found to have a higher water uptake and water selectivity than protein, indicating that it plays a major role in drying butanol. In order to compare the performance of CM on drying of butanol with other biomaterials, adsorption experiments were done using corn meal as adsorbent, which is one of the most common starch based biosorbents for ethanol drying. The results demonstrated that canola meal had a higher water uptake and water selectivity than corn meal. Use of CM over corn meal adsorbent is also desirable so as to avoid placing pressure on food consumption. In addition, drying of butanol using other cellulose based biosorbents such as oat hull was also explored. Oat hull demonstrated a potential to adsorb water and dehydrate butanol, which requires further in-depth investigation.

Low energy circuit design using low voltage swing and selectively skewed gates

Sheshadri, Smitha 29 October 2010 (has links)
In this thesis, we propose a circuit design technique that reduces the energy utilized by any logic circuit for computation. We achieve this, by reducing the voltage swing on the circuit without greatly compromising the speed of operation and keeping in mind the noise margin constraints. Our technique involves the use of head or tail transistors that provide a Vth drop in the voltage swing. We choose to use head or tail transistors on alternate logic levels providing us with an option of driver stage, based on the noise margin of the subsequent stage. We demonstrate the working of this concept on inverter chains, to prove the correctness as well as the ability of the reduced voltage swing circuits to drive subsequent stages. We also discuss the implementation of this technique on basic gates and simple combinational circuits. We then show detailed experiments on a larger circuit, in this case a Kogge-Stone parallel prefix adder. We will discuss the overheads involved in the design and methods to partially overcome these by the use of selectively skewed gates and application of forward body bias. Finally we implement the same design using a different technology to demonstrate the scalability of the technique. / text

Medidas elétricas no policarbonato durolon e o metododa temperatura oscilante. / Electrical measurements in the durolon polycarbonate and method of swing temperature.

Jorge, Alfredo 26 July 1991 (has links)
In this work the electrical characterization of the Polycarbonate Bisphenol-A, Durolon &#174 was attempted, trying to separate the dipole and the conduction processes. However, poor reproducibility, mainly in the conductivity, was achieved even for samples (&#8773 30&#956m thick usually) taken from the same batch. Anomalies were detected but not studied in detail owing the poor reproducibility referred above. Beside the usual techniques like the isothermal polarization and depolarization in short-circuit, thermally depolarization currents and thermally stimulated polarization, in a new one, employed by the first time for the study of transport and polarization, the temperature was oscillated and the ensuing current oscillation was monitored. Large phase shifts (the current lagging the temperature oscillation), even greater &#8773 90&#176 were found in the range 50&#176C 70&#176C. A simple analysis indicates that in this case both the conductivity as well as the susceptibility are decreased for increasing temperature (dX/dT&#8773 -1x10-3/&#176C). Accordingly thermally stimulated polarization shows a current reversal with respect to the electric field from room temperature to &#8773 90&#176C. A systematic study of the conduction process at 120&#176C was carried out, the analysis of which indicates that carriers are emitted from the electrode, whose transit across the sample is shorter than the duration of the polarization current (&#8773 2 min). Spontaneous tensions and currents were detected even for samples provisioned with similar electrodes (a correlation with the actual sequence of metallization, following a suggestion by Prof. B. Gross, was surmised). A few measurements with Al-Al, Al-Au and Au-Au electrodes were carried out. Finally suggestions for future work are given.

Savoy: reassessing the role of the "World's Finest Ballroom" in music and culture, 1926-1958.

Abdoulaev, Alexandre 22 January 2016 (has links)
From 1926 to 1958, the Savoy Ballroom in New York's Harlem neighborhood played a critical role in the development and showcasing of African-American popular culture. During its lifetime, the Savoy Ballroom significantly affected the concurrent development of jazz music and jazz dance, and laid important groundwork for racial integration. The Savoy Ballroom served as the home base for such jazz greats as William "Chick" Webb, Lucius Venable "Lucky" Millinder, and David "Panama" Francis, and launched the careers of John Birk "Dizzy" Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk. Beyond music, the Lindy Hop, a partnered jazz dance that emerged at the Savoy during the late 1920s, was one of the Ballroom's cultural exports; it gained an unprecedented degree of fame and recognition during the late 1930s, and is still practiced today by communities across the United States and the world. The objective of this dissertation is to examine the cultural, social, and musical contribution made by the Savoy Ballroom to the promotion of African-American culture. The first and second chapters of this dissertation address the historical and cultural context of Harlem and the Savoy proper. The third chapter examines some of the emerging traditions behind the Savoy Ballroom's status as the "World's Finest Ballroom." The fourth and fifth chapters address the chronological and technical development of music and jazz dance at the Savoy, with particular attention given to the lasting impact of such advancements as the incorporation of swing feel into jazz. The sixth chapter examines the cultural impact of the Ballroom on contemporary and modern media, particularly print, music, film, and photography. Finally, the seventh chapter examines the Savoy Ballroom's participation in New York's World's Fair exhibition in 1939, and its impact on the worldwide export of Harlem's African-American culture.

Out-of-step Protection Using Energy Equilibrium Criterion in the Time Domain

Paudyal, Sumit 03 July 2008

Disturbances in power systems are common and they result in electromechanical oscillations called power swing. The power swings could be severe and it may lead to loss of synchronism among the interconnected generators. This is referred to as out-of-step condition. The voltage and current swings during an out-of-step condition damage power system equipments and also cause unwanted operations of various protective devices. The protection systems require an effective algorithm for fast and accurate detection of out-of-step condition.

This research is focused on the development of a simple and effective out-of-step relay capable of detecting out-of-step condition in a complex power system. To achieve this, the research has gone through four distinct stages: development of an algorithm, simulation, hardware implementation and its testing.

An out-of-step algorithm is proposed based on equal area criterion in time domain. The equal area criterion in time domain is obtained by modifying the traditional equal area criterion in power angle domain. A single machine infinite bus system, a two machine infinite bus system and a three machine infinite bus system and a 17-bus multiple machines system are used as case studies and are modeled using simulation tool(PSCAD).

To test the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, various out-of-step conditions are simulated by applying disturbances at various locations in the above chosen power system configurations. For hardware implementation and testing of the algorithm, a digital signal processing board (ADSP-BF533 from Analog Devices ) is used. To test the performance of the developed digital relay in a closed loop, real time power system signals are necessary and therefore for this purpose, a Real Time Digital Simulator (RTDS) available in the power research laboratory is used. The RTDS simulator mimics the actual power systems in real time. The signals required by the relays can be tapped from the RTDS and the signals coming from relay can be fed back into the RTDS, which makes the closed loop testing of the digital relay possible. This research has yielded a simple out-of-step algorithm and unlike the other out-of-step detection techniques proposed in the literature does not need offline system studies to arrive at a solution. The developed digital out-of-step relay is capable of making decisions based only on the information available from its point of installation, thus it avoids the communication devices which is advantageous for the out-of-step protection of a complex power system. Finally, the simulation results show that the proposed algorithm can be applied to any power configurations and is faster compared to the conventional concentric rectangle schemes used in the literature.
