Bossé, Éliane 03 1900 (has links)
This Master's thesis presents the results of a zooarchaeological study based on two occupations of a single site dating to the beginning of the colonization of Baie-Saint-Paul (17th-18th centuries). An analysis of the faunal assemblage, a total of 1175 animal bones, has shown the opposite characters of the occupations. The "tar makers'" habitation site reveals the exploitation of wild ressources to make up for deficient animal rearing, as well as the skinning of wild game to provide a supplementary income through the fur trade. The farm established by the Séminaire de Québec reveals an alimentation based on farm produce, augmented by the hunting of wild species from the immediate environment. The zooarchaeological study of the Bas-de-la-Baie farm site also confirms the central role of breeding for rural sites in the St. Lawrence Valley, while underlining their diversity, in which farming, hunting and fishin played complementary roles.

Alvarez Orellana, Jennifer Élisabeth 08 1900 (has links)
The natural history of human papillomavirus type 16 (HPV-16) anal infection is undefined among HIV-seropositive men having sex with men (MSM). The aim of this study was to assess the association between HPV-16 episomal and integrated viral loads and the progression of anal intraepithelial neoplasia (AIN). HPV-16 episomal and integrated loads were measured on 665 specimens from 135 HPV-16-positive men participating in the prospective HIPVIRG (Human Immunodeficiency and Papilloma VIrus Research Group) study. AIN grade was evaluated on biopsies obtained during periodical high-resolution anoscopies. HPV-16 integration was confirmed by DIPS-PCR to demonstrate the presence of viral-cellular junctions. HPV-16 episomal loads [odds ratio (OR) 1.5, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.1–2.1], burden of HPV infection [OR 1.4 (95% CI=1.1–1.8)] and current smoking [4.8 (95% CI=1.3–18.6)], but not integrated loads, were associated with high-grade lesions (AIN-2,3) after age and CD4 counts adjustment. A high HPV-16 episomal load was the only predictive factor of progression from low-grade AIN to high-grade AIN [OR 8.0 (95% CI=1.2–55.4)]. Specimens with higher HPV-16 episomal loads were less likely to contain integration [OR 0.5 (95% CI=0.3–0.8)]. HPV-16 integration was detected in the absence of AIN, in AIN-1 and in AIN-2,3. The analysis of the viral-cellular junctions did not allow identifying a specific site of integration.

The Rastafari presence in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon

Unknown Date (has links)
Literary scholars frequently analyze the allusions to Western Christianity apparent in Toni Morrison's novels, but these studies overlook the ways in which some of her novels are informed by a Caribbean presence. This study argues that Rastafari themes, symbols, and ideologies are recurrent in Toni Morrison's Tar Baby, Beloved, and Song of Solomon. Rastafari is a social movement primarily concerned with restoring the image of Africa to a holy place. A Rastafari analysis of these texts broadens the literary spectrum to suggest that these novels highlight Morrison's attempt to write about the multifaceted element of the black community, which remains deeply connected to its American, African, and Caribbean roots. / by Nicole Racquel Carr. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2010. / Includes bibliography. / Electronic reproduction. 多變量TAR模型分析及其在預測流浪教師數的應用 / Multivariate TAR Model Analysis and its Applications to the Vagabond Teachers’ Forecasting

Unknown Date (has links)
The vagabond teachers in elementary schools is an important problem in education administration. An accurate forecast of the number of vagabond teachers in elementary schools may heavily affect educational policy. In this thesis, we use multivariate TAR model analysis to forecast the number of vagabond teachers in elementary schools in Taiwan Area during a period from 100 to 103. According to the result, multivariate TAR model perform well for prediction. Multivariate TAR model can be widely used in different circumstances, especially complicated situation. As far as common time series data is concerned, it has change point or change period occurs.Structural change of a non-linear time series is auniversal phenomenon. Selecting suitable data variables and using exogenous variables to be a threshold, we could obtain better predictable effect by multivariate TAR model.

Beltz, Hervé 05 November 2004 (has links) (PDF)

RhPt and Ni based catalysts for fuel reforming in energy conversion

González Arcos, Angélica Viviana January 2015 (has links)
Although current trends in global warming are of great concern, energy demand is still increasing, resulting in increasing pollutant emissions. To address this issue, we need reliable renewable energy sources, lowered pollutant emissions, and efficient and profitable processes for energy conversion. We also need to improve the use of the energy, produced by existing infrastructure. Consequently, the work presented in this thesis aims at investigating current scientific and technological challenges in energy conversion through biomass gasification and the alternative use of fossil fuels, such as diesel, in the generation of cleaner electricity through auxiliary power units in the transport sector. Production of chemicals, syngas, and renewable fuels is highly dependent on the development and innovation of catalytic processes within these applications. This thesis focuses on the development and optimization of catalytic technologies in these areas. One of the limitations in the commercialization of the biomass gasification technology is the effective catalytic conversion of tars, formed during gasification. Biomass contains high amounts of alkali impurities, which pass on to the producer gas. Therefore, a new material with alkali tolerance is needed. In the scope of this thesis, a new catalyst support, KxWO3 – ZrO2 with high alkali resistance was developed. The dynamic capability of KxWO3 – ZrO2 to store alkali metals in the crystal structure, enhances the capture of alkali metals "in situ". Alkali metals are also important electronic promoters for the active phase, which usually increases the catalysts activity and selectivity for certain products. Experimental results show that conversion of 1-methylnaphathalene over Ni/KxWO3 – ZrO2 increases in the presence of 2 ppm of gas-phase K (Paper I). This support is considered to contribute to the electronic equilibrium within the metal/support interface, when certain amounts of alkali metals are present. The potential use of this support can be extended to applications in which alkali "storage-release" properties are required, i.e. processes with high alkali content in the process flow, to enhance catalyst lifetime and regeneration. In addition, fundamental studies to understand the adsorption geometry of naphthalene with increasing temperature were performed in a single crystal of Ni(111) by STM analyses. Chapter 9 presents preliminary studies on the adsorption geometry of the molecule, as well as DFT calculations of the adsorption energy. In relation to the use of clean energy for transport applications, hydrogen generation through ATR for FC-APUs is presented in Papers II to V. Two promoted RhPt bimetallic catalysts were selected in a previous bench scale study, supported on La2O3:CeO2/d – Al2O3 and MgO : Y2O3/CeO2 – ZrO2. Catalyst evaluation was performed in a fullscale reformer under real operating conditions. Results showed increased catalyst activity after the second monolithic catalyst due to the effect of steam reforming, WGS reaction, and higher catalyst reducibility of the RhxOy species in the CeO2 – ZrO2 mixed oxide, as a result of the improved redox properties. The influence of sulfur and coke formation on diesel reforming was assessed after 40 h on stream. Sulfur poisoning was evaluated for the intrinsic activity related to the total Rh and Pt area observed after exposure to sulfur. Sulfur concentration in the aged catalyst washcoat was observed to decrease in the axial direction of the reformer. Estimations of the amount of sulfur adsorbed were found to be below the theoretical equilibrated coverage on Rh and Pt, thus showing a partial deactivation due to sulfur poisoning. /
QC 20150213

A real options analysis and comparative cost assessment of nuclear and natural gas applications in the Athabasca oil sands

Harvey, Julia Blum, 1982- 04 January 2011 (has links)
This report offers a comparative valuation of two bitumen production technologies, using real options analysis (ROA) techniques to incorporate strategic flexibility into the investment scenario. By integrating a probabilistic cost model into a real options framework, the value of an oil recovery facility is modeled to reflect the realistic alternatives available to decision-makers, where the course of the investment can be altered as new information becomes available. This approach represents a distinct advantage to traditional discounted cash flow (DCF) estimation, which is unable to capture operational adaptability, including the ability to expand, delay, or abandon a project. The analysis focuses on the energy inputs required for the recovery of heavy oil bitumen from Alberta, Canada, and examines both natural gas and nuclear steam plants as heat sources. The ACR-1000 reactor is highlighted as a substitute for conventional natural gas-fueled means of production, in light of the recent volatility of natural gas prices and the potential for emissions compliance charges. The methodology includes a levelized cost assessment per barrel of bitumen and estimation of cost ranges for each component. A mean-reversion stochastic price model was also derived for the both natural gas and oil price. By incorporating cost ranges into a ROA framework, the benefit of retaining project flexibility is included in its valuation. Formulated as a decision tree, built-in options include the initial selection to pursue nuclear or natural gas, site selection and licensing, the ability to switch heat source in the planning stage, and the final commitment to construct. Each decision is influenced by uncertainties, including the course of bitumen and natural gas price, as well as emissions policy. By structuring the investment scenario to include these options, the overall value of the project increases by over $150 million. The ability to switch technology type allows for an assessment of the viability of nuclear steam, which becomes economically favorable given high natural gas prices or high emissions taxes. Given an initial selection of natural gas SAGD, there is a 25% probability that a switch to nuclear steam will occur, as evolving financial conditions make nuclear the optimal technology. / text

Building an Information Management System for Emergency Preparedness and Response to Promote Assurance: A Case Study of the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness

Robinson, Judith A 13 May 2011 (has links)
The Strategic National Stockpile (SNS) is a program that provides medical countermeasures during a public health emergency. A public health emergency can be a natural or man-made disaster, an act of terrorism, or a pandemic. The Cities Readiness Initiative (CRI) was created to help the nation’s largest metropolitan regions develop the ability to provide SNS life-saving medications in the event of a large-scale bioterrorist attack or naturally occurring disease outbreak. To address the risks associated with a public health emergency the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) requires a comprehensive emergency response plan for distributing SNS/CRI materials quickly and efficiently. The Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness (FCDHW) is tasked with responsibility for distributing and dispensing of SNS/CRI medical assets delivered during a public health emergency. FCDHW is also tasked with the development of a comprehensive response plan. Past TAR scores revealed that passing SNS/CRI audits has been a challenge for FCDHW. A case study was conducted to note if the development of an information management system could facilitate successful future SNS/CRI audits. A needs assessment revealed that an information management system for emergency preparedness and response compliance was needed. Microsoft SharePoint 2007 was used to develop the information management system. SharePoint contains a secure document repository that linked the work products of all relevant internal and external stakeholders and revealed compliance deficiencies early enough to allow for corrective actions. The result was a passing TAR score that was a 59 point increase from the last published score.

Carex establishment on reclaimed oil sands landscapes : a case study at Suncor Energy Inc.

Marlowe, Patricia Ann 14 March 2011 (has links)
Reclaimed oil sands landscapes are perceived to be low in plant diversity compared with naturally occurring plant communities. Approximately 66 Carex species inhabit the oil sand region. This thesis is unique and represents the first large scale study of Carex establishment on reclaimed oil sands landscapes. Research compared diversity and habitat variables between natural ecosystems and reclaimed landscapes, and examined the colonization mechanism for Carex establishment on reclaimed landscapes (i.e., ingress from adjacent natural ecosystems or emergence from the soil seed bank). Low positive associations between the presence of Carex in natural and reclaimed landscapes, and the presence of species on reclaimed landscapes not accounted for in either the forest or edge plots, suggests Carex established from the soil seed bank and less so from natural ingress. Carex share the same seed dispersal mechanisms as many plants, so the implications may apply to a broader range of plant species.
