This diploma thesis deals with the use of CO2 in gasification of biomass. The theoretical part is focus on description of gasification process and gasification reactors. The next part descripes the influence of the gasifitation medium composition on the properties of the generated gas. The experimental part is devoted to gasification of biomass on a fluidized bed generator, where the effect of CO2 concetration in the gasification medium on the properties of the generated gas is investigated. In the final part is the evaluation of the results.

Size and Shape Stasis in Late Pleistocene Mammals and Birds From Rancho La Brea During the Last Glacial-Interglacial Cycle

Conventional neo-Darwinian theory views organisms as infinitely sensitive and responsive to their environments, and considers them able to readily change size or shape when they adapt to selective pressures. Yet since 1863 it has been well known that Pleistocene animals and plants do not show much morphological change or speciation in response to the glacial-interglacial climate cycles. We tested this hypothesis with all of the common birds (condors, golden and bald eagles, turkeys, caracaras) and mammals (dire wolves, saber-toothed cats, giant lions, horses, camels, bison, and ground sloths) from Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles, California, which preserves large samples of many bones from many well-dated pits spanning the 35,000 years of the Last Glacial-Interglacial cycle. Pollen evidence showed the climate changed from chaparral/oaks 35,000 years ago to snowy piñon-juniper forests at the peak glacial 20,000 years ago, then back to the modern chaparral since the glacial-interglacial transition. Based on Bergmann's rule, we would expect peak glacial specimens to have larger body sizes, and based on Allen's rule, peak glacial samples should have shorter and more robust limbs. Yet statistical analysis (ANOVA for parametric samples; Kruskal-Wallis test for non-parametric samples) showed that none of the Pleistocene pit samples is statistically distinct from the rest, indicating complete stasis from 35 ka to 9 ka. The sole exception was the Pit 13 sample of dire wolves (16 ka), which was significantly smaller than the rest, but this did not occur in response to climate change. We also performed a time series analysis of the pit samples. None showed directional change; all were either static or showed a random walk. Thus, the data show that birds and mammals at Rancho La Brea show complete stasis and were unresponsive to the major climate change that occurred at 20 ka, consistent with other studies of Pleistocene animals and plants. Most explanations for such stasis (stabilizing selection, canalization) fail in this setting where climate is changing. One possible explanation is that most large birds and mammals are very broadly adapted and relatively insensitive to changes in their environments, although even the small mammals of the Pleistocene show stasis during climate change, too.

This work is dealing with the utilization of biomass feed stocks and wooden residue for gasification process to produce syn-gas suitable for the implementation of power plants for electricity generation and problem of gas production suitable for further chemical and energy purpose discussing the suitable practical purification methods, given that the complexity of theme and project which carried out through detailed analysis. Since the obtained gas has many types of unwanted contaminants. It was necessary to derive an effective cleaning method for gas purification from chemical contaminants especially tars components. The discussion of the definitions and methods for the determination of gas unwanted components and their removal technologies on the basis of the knowledge of data, collecting and analysis carried out through an experimental massive approach. The theoretical analysis of the gasification process for an effective tar reduction in the produced gas has been studied as well. Since the quality requirements for internal combustion engines, gas turbines and fuel cells using the primary measurement methods cannot be achieved for gas production, this work aimed removing different particulates and tar. The main emphasis is placed on the methods of high cleaning taking in account the chemical and thermal specifications of the gas which is based on the utilization of three different kinds of carbon materials successfully and efficiently char coal, black coke and active carbon for tar removal which has a major impact on the process parameters. The analysis was responding with the mechanism and the techniques of minimizing the resultant allowable concentration by using a suitable materials and verifying the operation conditions without affecting the gas thermal efficiency. The highlights of the theoretical and experimental work has been drawn up by a high concept cleaning allowing the production of a pure gas having a quality that meets the modern technical requirements for electricity generation. Functionality the most efficient cleaning methods were based in the current project for tar reduction on the quantity of tar removed, the materials used for tar cracking and the conditions of the experimental work as well. For a successful application, some proposals have been settled for industrial applications of gas cleaning.

Gasification of biomass is a one of the several technologies for energy production from biomass. Biomass is a promising renewable source of energy and is in a centre of attention of energy industry not only in the Czech Republic, but also in the EU and in the world. Gasification is a thermo chemical transformation of fuel with access of understoicheiometric amount of oxidizer which produces gas of low heating value. Its main combustible components are hydrogen, carbon dioxide and methane. Produced gas may be further used in power and heating plants. Besides combustible and neutral components, gas also contains pollutants such as sulphur compounds, chlorine compounds, ash and tar. It is tar which is considered to be the underbelly of gasification as it causes, along with ash, fouling in transport tracks and terminal equipment, and blocks direct application of gas. This dissertation thesis presents design of filter for elimination of tar from the gas generated in fluid gasification equipment. This work is closely related to current research at Energy Institute at Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at Brno University of Technology. First part deals with theoretical background of this issue. Biomass properties are mentioned in relation to gasification. Types of gasification equipment are described and principle of gasification including chemical reactions is given in detail. Special part is dedicated to pollutants in the gas, especially to production of tar and its properties, which is important for consequent work. Main focus is on possibilities of catalytic cleaning of gas from tar. Principle of tar decomposition is described and types and properties of catalysts are given. Part of the thesis tackles the issue of real operations and loss of efficiency of catalyst due to sulphur compounds, sintering and carbon fouling. Based on experience and analysis in the first part of the thesis, concept of elimination of tar from gas was laid out. In addition to that, method for measurement at Biofluid 100 experimental unit was outlined and filter for testing of industrial catalysts using metal was designed. Series of experiments were further conducted in order to find out efficiency of three opted catalysts for tar decomposition. Results of these experiments are described in detail and assessed in the conclusion of this thesis which also contains outline for economic assessment of method of gas cleaning using catalysts.

本研究使用含外生多變數為門檻值之TAR模型,分析並預測103年到105年的台股指數。建構多變量之門檻自迴歸模式較傳統以時變或自變數自動控制值更能反映出時間數列結構改變的過程與趨勢。這對於模式分析與預測有更優的解釋能力。且含外生多變數為門檻值之多變量門檻模式的可適用範圍很廣,尤其是當時間數列中的結構改變的現象,來自於外在多個變數衝擊,或非線性現象。此時加入多個外生變數作為考量,更能精準分析資料和做預測。我們以台股指數為例,實證結果顯示,我們所提出之模型,較傳統預測方法有更高之準確度。 / In this research, we use exogenous multi-variables as threshold values to construct a threshold autoregressive model in order to analysis and forecast TAIEX index between 103 years and 105 years. Constructing the threshold autoregressive model with multi-variables is better to reflect the process and trend of the change in time series structure than traditional model. This provides the better explanatory ability for model analysis and forecast. Also, the threshold autoregressive model with multi-variables containing exogenous multi-variables can apply more range, especially, as the structure change in time series due to the exogenous multi-variables shock. Through adding more exogenous variables, one can analyze data and forecast accurately. In this paper, the empirical results of TAIEX index shows that the threshold autoregressive model with multi-variables containing exogenous multi-variables is more precise than the traditional way.

Malgré des progrès importants réalisés ces dernières années, la lutte contre les infections virales (SIDA, hépatites etc.) et les cancers demeurent un problème de santé mondiale. Ce bref bilan met en évidence la nécessité de développer de nouvelles molécules pour contourner les limites des traitements disponibles actuellement. Cette thèse, articulée autour de trois grands thèmes, s’inscrit dans ce contexte. Nous avons d’abord mis au point de manière rationnelle de nouveaux ligands d’ARN capables de se lier sélectivement à certaines structures secondaires de type tige-boucle ou tige-renflement de l’ARN TAR du VIH-1. Ces ligands interagissent avec l’ARN grâce à l’action coopérative de deux motifs de reconnaissance : (i) une nucléobase modifiée qui peut reconnaitre spécifiquement une paire de base de l’ARN et (ii) des acides aminés qui agissent avec les bases non appariées de l’ARN. Ces deux motifs sont reliés grâce à une matrice aliphatique (ligands non nucléosidiques) ou une matrice 2-désoxyribose (ligands nucléosidiques). Des études biophysiques et biologiques ont été menés en collaboration avec l’équipe du Dr. L. Briant (CEAPBS, UMR5236-CNRS) pour connaitre leur activité antivirale et leur site d’interaction sur la cible. Nous avons ensuite développé des molécules de type benzènesulfonamide thiazoles pour cibler le mélanome résistant aux inhibiteurs de B-Raf. Des modulations effectuées sur ce squelette nous ont permis d’établir des relations structure/activité, en collaboration avec l’équipe de Dr. S. Rocchi (C3M, INSERM U895). Enfin, nous avons développé une stratégie de modification post-synthétique d’oligonucléotides en position anomérique par réaction clic. / Despite significant progress made in recent years, the fight against viral infections (AIDS, Hepatitis, etc.) and cancer remains a global health problem. This brief summary underlines the need for new compounds in order to overcome the limitations of currently available drugs. To this end, the main objective of this thesis is to address these issues by the investigation of three major research projects. We first developed new RNA ligands that selectively bind to RNA secondary structures such as the stem-loop or the stem-bulge of HIV-1 TAR RNA. These ligands interact with RNA thanks to the presence of two RNA binding domains acting in a cooperative manner: (i) a modified nucleobase that can specifically recognize an RNA base pair and (ii) basic amino acids that interact with strong affinity with surrounding free RNA nucleobases. These two patterns are connected by an aliphatic matrix (non-nucleoside ligands) or a 2-desoxyribose matrix (nucleoside-based ligands). Biophysical and biological studies were conducted in collaboration with the team of Dr. L. Briant (CEAPBS, UMR5236-CNRS) in order to study their antiviral activity and their mode of action. We next developed new bioactive molecules featuring a thiazole benzenesulfonamide scaffold to target melanoma cells resistant to B-Raf inhibitors. The modular synthesis of a large number of analogs allowed us to establish the structure/activity relationships, in collaboration with the team of Dr. S. Rocchi (C3M, INSERM U895). Finally, we developed a straightforward and convenient strategy for post-synthetic modification of oligonucleotides at the anomeric position using click chemistry.

Application Of Nonlinear Unit Root Tests And Threshold Autoregressive Models

Popularity of nonlinear threshold models and unit root tests has increased after the recent empirical studies concerning the effects of business cycles on macroeconomic data. These studies have shown that an economic variable may react differently in response to downturns and recoveries in a business cycle. Inspiring from empirical results, this thesis investigates dynamics of Turkish key macroeconomic data, namely capacity utilization rate, growth of import and export volume indices, growth of gross domestic product, interest rate for cash loans in Turkish Liras and growth of industrial production index. Estimation results imply that capacity utilization rate and growth of industrial production index show M-TAR type nonlinear stationary behavior according to the unit root test proposed by Enders and Granger (1998).
