CREF: An Editing Facility for Managing Structured Text

Pitman, Kent M. 01 February 1985 (has links)
This paper reports work in progress on an experimental text editor called CREF, the Cross Referenced Editing Facility. CREF deals with chunks of text, called segments, which may have associated features such as keywords or various kinds of links to other segments. Text in CREF is organized into linear collections for normal browsing. The use of summary and cross-reference links in CREF allows the imposition of an auxiliary network structure upon the text which can be useful for "zooming in and out" or "non-local transitions." Although it was designed as a tool for use in complex protocol analysis by a "knowledge Engineer's Assistant," CREF has many interesting features which should make it suitable for a wide variety of applications, including browsing, program editing, document preparation, and mail reading.

What did I just read? : An eye-tracking and reading comprehension study on automatized text summaries

Hamsis, Omar January 2014 (has links)
In modern society where time is of essence and almost everything is accessible with a click of a button, it is important that the information we take in is relevant, which is why automatized text summaries must contain necessary information and is understandable for the reader. This study aims to investigate if extracted and highlighted automatic text summaries are as comprehensive as the original text and the differences between extracted summary and highlight summary. The research will study the eyes movement during reading different types of texts, mainly focusing on fixation and saccades. The study found that readers tend to fixate more when reading summaries than an original text, which in turn lead to a longer time to read the text. For comprehensiveness there was no greater difference found between the summaries and the original text.

Vybrané aktivizační metody práce s textem v multikulturní výchově / Selected activating methods of incorporating text in multicultural education

Nouzáková, Barbora January 2021 (has links)
The thesis is concerned with activating methods in multicultural education. The focus is mainly on incorporating text. The theoretical part, therefore, deals with multicultural education, reading, text and basic concepts that relate to these. Furthermore, the crucial part is enumeration and description of methods that can be implemented to activate students. The aim of the practical part is to investigate what methods are used in multicultural education by teachers at primary and secondary schools in the Czech Republic. Another objective is to map whether and how they work with texts. For the purposes of the work, quantitative research and a questionnaire as methods of data collection were selected. The practical output is a series of worksheets based on incorporating text that can serve as inspiration for other teachers. KEY WORDS: multicultural education, competence, method, reading, text

Adaptivní rozpoznávání ručně psaného textu / Adaptive Handwritten Text Recognition

Procházka, Štěpán January 2021 (has links)
The need to preserve and exchange written information is central to the human society, with handwriting satisfying such need for several past millenia. Unlike optical character recognition of typeset fonts, which has been throughly studied in the last few decades, the task of handwritten text recognition, being considerably harder, lacks such attention. In this work, we study the capabilities of deep convolutional and recurrent neural networks to solve handwritten text extraction. To mitigate the need for large quantity of real ground truth data, we propose a suitable synthetic data generator for model pre-training, and carry out extensive set of experiments to devise a self-training strategy to adapt the model to unnanotated real handwritten letterings. The proposed approach is compared to supervised approaches and state-of-the-art results on both established and novel datasets, achieving satisfactory performance. 1

Automatiserad matchning av relaterad data från olika datakällor / Automated matching of related data from different data sources

Harch, Gais, Ullström, Robin January 2014 (has links)
Social media today contains a lot of information that can add a great value for applications and products by achieve an improved user experience. In some cases, such information cannot be obtained without matching data from one or several data sources through a data fusion.   Eniro Initiatives AB wants to explore opportunities to implement an automated data fusion model by matching companies from its own API to the corresponding company on social media. The problem is that the only completely secured data of matching of all Swedish companies is its corporate identity, which is data that is not available with APIs that origin from foreign companies. The aim was to explore possibilities for the automated way to match related data from different data sources.   In this thesis, a prototype was developed to match companies from Eniro’s API with company pages from Facebook's API. The results from the tests of this prototype shows small deficiencies where redundant information made the prototype able to approve unofficial pages with links to the relevant company, which was not desirable.

Mobile Text Messaging and Connectedness within Close Interpersonal Relationships

Pettigrew, Jonathan Lyn 26 June 2007 (has links)
Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / Mobile telephones are impacting societies around the world and text messaging, short type-written messages sent via mobile phones, has also garnered international research efforts. Research demonstrates that text messages are being used primarily to commence, advance, maintain or otherwise impact interpersonal relationships. The present study probes relational benefits of text messaging within familial and fraternal contexts. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the research question: How does text messaging impact feelings of “connectedness” (IJsselsteijn, van Baren & van Lanen, 2003, p. 928) within “strong-tie” (Howard, et. al., 2006), dyadic relationships? Findings from nineteen respondent interviews show that texting becomes a channel through which dialectical tensions in relationships are played out. Respondents use texting to both assert autonomy and to maintain connectedness with relational partners. Several participants noted that financial issues were an important consideration but nevertheless subscribed to texting services. Users also perceived texting as more constant and more private than mobile voice interaction. Romantic pairs vis-à-vis non-romantic dyads perceived the benefits of text messages differently.

Öka intresset för kampsport : En studie i hur retorik tillsammans med bild och text i samverkan samt nudging kan öka förståelsen hos föräldrar om nyttan av kampsportande hos barn.

Cederborg, Linnea January 2024 (has links)
This is a thesis project in Information Design with focus on text design. The fact that the number of children and young people in association sports has decreased has been a problem for several years, nowadays it is especially martial arts that still struggles with this. The fact that the number of children and young people in association sports has decreased has been a problem for several years, nowadays it is especially martial arts that still struggle with this. The purpose of the work is to investigate how, with information based on theories such as: rhetoric, text and image in collaboration as well as nudging, I can increase the interest and understanding of the importance of martial arts for children among parents, this in order to increase the number of active in martial arts over time. The text design problem is that parents do not understand the benefits of martial arts in children, nor do they have information about what is available. The work therefore works with one of the UN's (UN, Global Goals for Sustainable Development) sustainability goal 3 – health and well-being. The empirical material has been collected through a survey in which parents of children between 7–12 years of age have been asked to participate anonymously, interviews, an environmental analysis and finally an expert panel. The work resulted in two final designs, a digital and a printed version.

A review of how to optimize learning from external representations

Moremoholo, T.P. January 2013 (has links)
Published Article / This article reviews research on learning with external representations and provides a theoretical background on how to optimize learning from external representations. General factors, such as the type of material to be learned, learner characteristics and the testing method, are some of the variables that can determine if graphic medium can increase a subject's comprehension and if such comprehension can be accurately measured. These factors are discussed and represented by a model to suggest how external representations can be effectively used in a learning environment. Two key conclusions are drawn from the observation made in these studies. Firstly, the proper design of a particular external representation and supporting text can promote relevant activities that ultimately contribute to fuller understanding of the content. Secondly, external representations must be developed to address the size complexity and variety of the content that must be analysed in order to extract knowledge for scientific discovery.
