Raw Data for Peace and Security - The Extraction and Mining of People's Behaviour

Deller, Yannick January 2020 (has links)
In 2015, the United Nations Global Pulse launched an experimentation process assessing the viability of big data and artificial intelligence analysis to support peace and security. The proposition of using such analysis, and thereby creating early warning systems based on real-time monitoring, warrants a critical assessment. This thesis engages in an explanatory critique of the discursive (re-)definitions of peace and security as well as big data and artificial intelligence in the United Nations Global Pulse Lab Kampala report Experimenting with Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to Support Peace and Security. The paper follows a qualitative design and utilises critical discourse analysis as its methodology while using instrumentarian violence as a theoretical lens. The study argues that the use of big data and artificial intelligence analysis, in conjunction with data mining on social media and radio broadcasts for the purposes of early warning systems, creates and manifests social relations marked by asymmetric power and knowledge dynamics. The analysis suggests that the report’s discursive and social practices indicate a conceptualisation of peace and security rooted in the notion of social control through prediction. The study reflects on the consequences for social identities, social relations, and the social world itself and suggests potential areas for future research.

Hjälpmedlet som får livet att rulla vidare

Al-Assaf, Sara, Lindqvist, Cornelia January 2019 (has links)
The welfare state in Sweden is govern by the politicians who sets regulations of the processing aids, though the municipalities is autonomous which state in the individual’s rights can be affected as the municipalities follow their own regula-tions. The professionals shall guide the individual to right accessibility aid through a needs assessment and strive after the individual’s independence. The goal is to enable the individual experiencing participation, independent life and the opportunity for an active life which is a part of the criteria for human rights. The individual should be heard in order to have the opportunity to participate in society as everyone else. A contributing factor to participation can be right adapted accessibility aid in form of a wheelchair that fulfills the individual’s need. The individual should have more options in the procured accessibility aid assortment which should be offered and not restricted by inter alia the municipal-ity. As society is constantly changing, the accessibility aid production should follow the development of society and produce products with Universal design i.e. products that enables more applications. The study was based on a semi-structured interview with six participants. Based on the study, it appeared that the representatives considered that the provision of assistive technology could increase the individual's empowerment and contribute to society. The representatives relate to the human rights and laws of society and the workplace as well as the professional knowledge. It can be emphasized that further research was needed in the area of recreational aids.

The Poetic and Musical Dialogue of Ambrosini and Cavalcanti: a Study of Claudio Ambrosini’s a Guisa Di Un Arcier Presto Soriano for Solo Flute

Choi, Su-hyun 08 1900 (has links)
Claudio Ambrosini’s (b. 1948) unpublished work for unaccompanied flute, A guisa di un arcier presto soriano (1981), although virtually unknown to the musical public and to connoisseurs alike, represents one of the most dazzling and impressive displays of extended techniques in the repertoire of solo flute music. The title, A guisa di un arcier presto soriano, comes from the seventh line of a sonnet by the Italian medieval poet Guido Cavalcanti (ca. 1250-1300) and translates as “just like a fast Syrian archer.” The archer in question is Eros, the Greek god of love. By the composer’s own admission, the form and expression of this piece is closely linked with the form and expression of Cavalcanti’s sonnet. In particular, Ambrosini intimates three elements specifically drawn from the poem: 1) moments of tension and suspense, as Eros silently approaches his target with bow and arrow in hand; 2) moments of love, even to the point of suggesting a love song; and 3) moments that suggest the fast passage of arrows. The purpose of this dissertation is to explore these three elements in Ambrosini’s work and to trace the correlations of the same elements in Cavalcanti’s sonnet. The expression of such concrete poetic imagery in Ambrosini’s music is at times easily deciphered through clear programmatic gestures or wordless madrigalisms; and at other times the symbolism of the poetry is developed in a hidden and metaphorical manner in its musical iteration. Further, Ambrosini’s use of a particularly colorful and vast array of extended techniques serves as the impetus for the formal structure that the music embodies, and I will show that this formal structure is itself a symbolic and metaphorical representation of the poetic significance of Cavalcanti’s sonnet.

Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op.43; Analysis and Discourse

Kang, Heejung 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation on Rachmaninoff's Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini, Op.43 is divided into four parts: 1) historical background and the state of the sources, 2) analysis, 3) semantic issues related to analysis (discourse), and 4) performance and analysis. The analytical study, which constitutes the main body of this research, demonstrates how Rachmaninoff organically produces the variations in relation to the theme, designs the large-scale tonal and formal organization, and unifies the theme and variations as a whole. The selected analytical approach is linear in orientation - that is, Schenkerian. In the course of the analysis, close attention is paid to motivic detail; the analytical chapter carefully examines how the tonal structure and motivic elements in the theme are transformed, repeated, concealed, and expanded throughout the variations. As documented by a study of the manuscripts, the analysis also facilitates insight into the genesis and structure of the Rhapsody. How Rachmaninoff develops his ideas through several notebooks - including sketches and drafts - is described. Later parts of the dissertation deal with programmatic aspects of the Rhapsody. Related to the composer's significant use of the Dies Irae melody, semantic issues concerning "love and death" are taken into account and closely related to the specific structure of the piece. Rachmaninoff's symphonic poem, The Isle of the Dead, is a work which bears some intriguing resemblances to the Rhapsody in its larger structure as well as its ideology. Therefore, an interpretation of this work is provided to show the special relationship between the two pieces. The last chapter presents a discussion of two recordings of the Rhapsody by Rachmaninoff and Moiseiwitsch made in 1934 and 1938 respectively. Comparing and contrasting the different interpretations of each variation in these two historical recordings, this concluding part of the study explores ways in which analysis can be realized through performance.

Considerations for Global Development and Impact using Haiti as a Case Study

Clerie, Isabelle 12 1900 (has links)
As the world becomes more connected, issues surrounding sustainable development are coming to the fore of global discussions. This is exemplified in strategies such as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), released in 2015, which created a framework for global development that defines specific goals for issues like poverty, climate change, and social justice. To complement the analysis that went into defining the SDGs, capital allocations around the world are becoming more impact focused so that the paradigm of development is shifting from donations to impact investments. The push for impact, however, has led to a homogenization of global challenges like reproductive health and poverty. This, in turn, has led to a standardization of information resulting in agencies designing interventions based on data and information that is misguided because of incorrect assumptions about a specific context. This paper explores how the decision-making mechanisms of global development agencies and investors could apply more anthropological processes to mitigate negative impact. As the development sector becomes more and more standardized, anthropologists can act as translators between affected communities and the institutions deciding how best to help them.

The Complexity of Peacebuilding : A case study of Somalia from 1991-1995

Mohamed, Abduljabar Abdulkadir Sheikh January 2021 (has links)
This paper presents the complexity of peacebuilding by looking at different types of peacebuilding models. To understand the peacebuilding models, this paper reviews different scholarly pieces of literature on the topic of peacebuilding. Furthermore, the paper focuses on the case of Somalia to determine the suitable peacebuilding model for Somalia. Somalia has faced one of the longest civil wars in Africa after the collapse of the government. To propose suitable peacebuilding for Somalia, the paper reviews different types of peacebuilding attempts that were conducted in Somalia by both international organizations and local peacemakers. These processes include an UN-led top-down approach and a bottom-up approach initiated by elders and local respected individuals. From reviewing different types of peacebuilding literature, the finding reveals conflict resolution specifically Ramsbotham et al (2011) as the best suitable peacebuilding model for Somalia.

Interrogating the competence of the African court of justice and human rights to review

Orago, Nicholas W. 10 October 1900 (has links)
Globalisation and the transfer of powers from state constitutional systems to international organisations (IOs) have led to several deficiencies, especially with regard to checks and balances in global governance. The need to inculcate the rule of law and constitutionalism in global governance has therefore gained currency in the 21st century. This has been exemplified by calls for the reform of the United Nations (UN) and the extensive reforms in regional IOs, such as the European Union (EU), with emphasis on institutional balance and the tempering of political power with institutional controls. / Thesis (LLM (Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa)) -- University of Pretoria, 2010. / A dissertation submitted to the Faculty of Law University of Pretoria, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Masters of Law (LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation in Africa). Arquitectura de un Dashboard de monitoreo de Proyectos de Software en PYMES mediante la integración de herramientas de desarrollo

González Catalán, Christian Andrés January 2019 (has links)
