Speak Good English Movement in Singapore : Reactions in Social and Traditional Media

Suhonen, Lari-Valtteri January 2011 (has links)
The first Speak Good English Movement, SGEM, took place in 2000, and has been organized annually ever since. Speaking a “standard” form of English is considered to bring increased personal power. However, the SGEM wants the Singaporeans to use “standard” English in their private life as well. A decade after the beginning of the campaign, a Speak Good Singlish Movement was started. Based on studies of language and identity, it is understandable why some Singaporeans might feel the SGEM threatens their identity. However, the reactions towards the campaign are mainly positive. For the purposes of this analysis, Twitter messages, Facebook pages, and newspaper articles from The Straits Times were collected. The SGEM has hailed both direct and indirect praise and criticism in both social and traditional media: Five newspaper articles praise the campaign while five criticize it; the results are nine and seven respectively for social media. This thesis looks at reactions towards the SGEM in both social and traditional media, analyzes how these reactions might relate to the ideas of the power of language, its variety and the relation of language and identity.

Kiswahili-speaking Africans in Germany before 1945

Bechhaus-Gerst, Marianne 30 November 2012 (has links) (PDF)
The history of Waswahili in Germany before the end of World War II, their life histories and living conditions have not as yet been subject of scientific research. In the period before the colonial occupation of Africa Africans came to Germany in small numbers voluntarily or as victims of violent abduction (Martin 1993). The Germans were interested in the exotic looks of the foreigners, but did not care about their regions of origin. Africa was the unknown black continent, terra incognita, its inhabitants indiscriminately `blacks´ or `negroes´. Their homelands and ethnic or linguistic identities remained obscure, relevant only to a small group of researchers with an early interest in the continent and its peoples. Concerning the so-called Swahili people from Eastern Africa who came to Germany from the colonial period on, one has to keep in mind that until the end of the forties their identities were usually defined by their knowledge of Kiswahili, not by their actual ethnic or linguistic origins. In this article some stories are told about Swahili- speaking people from the former colony of German East Africa, now Tanzania, who came to Germany temporarily or permanently and for different reasons left traces in written records, which help us to reconstruct parts of their biographies.

Periodic-review Inventory Systems With Exogenous And Endogenous Replenishment Lead Times

Asci, Murtaza 01 January 2008 (has links) (PDF)
In this thesis, two-echelon systems with exogenous and endogenous lead times are studied for the orders placed by the retailer(s) from the supplier. The retailer(s) employ periodic-review base-stock policy, namely (R,S) policy. For the case the demand during review period is i.i.d. and the probability distribution is Normal for each review period, a new method is proposed for exogenous lead time case under stationary policy. The results of the proposed method is then compared with the results of the existing methods in the literature and it is concluded that the proposed method provides service levels sufficiently close to target levels whereas the existing methods do not necessarily provide target levels. We use the simulation to study the endogenous replenishment lead time case. The proposed method is modified when the retailer employs stationary policy and it is seen that the proposed method gives no-stockout probabilities close to target levels. Moreover, the impacts of using adaptive policy on the performance of the retailer are studied for endogenous replenishment lead time case. It is concluded that updating of the order-up-to-level deteriorates the performance of the retailer. Finally, it is questioned whether it is beneficial for a retailer to use adaptive policy in a supply chain with two retailers. Simulation results show that the deterioration in the performance of the retailer handling stationary policy is larger compared to the other retailer handling adaptive policy and the deteriorations get larger in the case of an increase in update frequency or in utilization of the supplier.

Novel Donor-acceptor Type Green Polymer Bearing Pyrrole As The Donor Unit With Excellent Switching Times And Very Low Band Gap And Its Multichromic Copolymers

Celebi, Selin 01 September 2009 (has links) (PDF)
A new neutral state green polymer, poly (2,3-bis(4-tert-butylphenyl)-5,8-di(1H-pyrrol-2-yl) quinoxaline) (PTBPPQ) was synthesized and its copolymer with bis(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (BiEDOT) and 4,7-bis(2,3-dihydrothieno[3,4-b][1,4]dioxin-5-yl)-2-dodecyl-2H-benzo [1,2,3] triazole (BEBT) were produced. Finally polymers&rsquo / potential use as an electrochromic material was investigated. Electrochromic properties of the polymers were investigated by several methods including spectroelectrochemistry, kinetic and colorimetry studies. Key properties of conjugated polymers such as band gap, maximum absorption wavelength, the intergap states that appear upon doping and evolution of polaron and bipolaron bands were investigated via spectroelectrochemistry experiments. Switching times and optical contrasts of the homopolymer and the copolymer were evaluated via kinetic studies. Copolymer of TBPPQ with BiEDOT and BEBT were electrochemically synthesized and characterized. Resulting copolymer films have distinct electrochromic properties and revealed multichromism through the entire visible region. Although BiEDOT and BEBT have different oxidation potentials, the resulting copolymers have very similar redox behaviors. In a monomer free solution, both copolymers show four colors from purple, gray, light green to transmissive blue with the variation of the applied potential. Copolymerization with BiEDOT and BEBT not only decreases the band gap, Eg, but also enhances the electrochromic and optical properties. Hence, electrochemical copolymerization is considered to be a powerful tool to improve the electrochromic properties of quinoxaline derivatives. It should be noted that PTBPPQ is one of the few examples of neutral state green polymeric materials with superior switching properties. Hence, PTBPPQ can be used as a green polymeric material for display technologies.

Modeling and Predicting Taxi Times at Airports

Chauhan, Arjun 29 October 2010 (has links)
This research aims at providing methods in analyzing and estimating the taxi times of aircraft at airports, which are expected to be an important element for reducing taxiing delay and consequent excess fuel consumption and environmental costs. The proposed model involves a set of regression equations to model the taxi-out and taxi-in times at airports. The estimated results can be used to calculate the nominal taxi times, which are essential measures for evaluating the taxiing delays at airports. Given the outcomes of the regression model, an iterative algorithm is developed to predict taxi times. A case study at LGA shows that the proposed algorithm demonstrates higher accuracy in comparison to other algorithms in existing literature.

An investigation into the waiting list experience : exploring parents' views of children referred to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service

Woodhouse, Wendy January 2007 (has links)
Aims: The purpose of the qualitative study was to gain insight into the way parents experience and manage the waiting process following a referral to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. The aim was to use the information for future service delivery and therapeutic engagement. Method: 6 parents whose child had been referred to a Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service and had been waiting for more than eight weeks were recruited using a purposive sampling method and participated in a semi-structured interview. The interviews were transcribed and analysed using the principles of Pidgeon & Henwood’s (1992) grounded theory techniques, facilitating the development and refinement of a theoretical model. Results: The resulting model highlights the waiting experience as fraught by loneliness, abandonment and self blame resulting in an interchanging role of being active or passive and the subsequent cycle they subside into. Some parents use the waiting time effectively by searching for their own answers but may eventually become passive following a belief that their parenting is insufficient. The disempowerment and self blame that is perpetuated through waiting intensifies the parents’ helplessness and results in a wide disparity between a negative self view and the idealised view of the professional. Conclusion: This study described the difficult experiences parents face while waiting for their child’s initial appointment. Parents need to be offered support, information and empowerment while waiting with ongoing communication from the service. Recommendations for future service and clinical delivery are provided.

Staging medievalisms : touching the Middle Ages through contemporary performance

Gutierrez, Christina Lynn 09 October 2013 (has links)
Staging Medievalisms analyzes how twentieth- and twenty-first century performance constructs the Middle Ages. This work is in conversation with medievalism, the academic field concerned with the diverse ways post-medieval societies have re-imagined medieval narratives and tropes, often in service of their own values. As a result of centuries worth of re-definition, the term "medieval" is unstable, referring simultaneously to a fairytale prehistory and a dark age of oppression. I argue that performance, both in theatrical productions and in medieval-focused tourist spaces, allows an affective connection between the medieval past and the present, casting the Middle Ages as an inherently flexible backdrop for contemporary political and social concerns. In tourist spaces and plays about the Middle Ages, the performing body becomes the site where the medieval and the modern touch. I conduct close readings of six productions and three public spaces which stage the Middle Ages, examining which particular versions of the medieval they create, how they stage moments of historiographical contact, and how each uses the medieval to imagine their own historical contexts. Chapter one provides an overview of medievalism and its connection to performance studies, and subsequent chapters take up contemporary productions of medieval history, legend, and fantasy, respectively. Chapter two examines three recent stagings of Shakespeare's medieval history play Henry V, a work which stages two opposing versions of the medieval simultaneously. The Royal Shakespeare Company (1994), National Theatre (2003), and Austin, Texas (2009) productions offer commentary on modern warfare, using Henry's medieval battles as both evidence and setting. Chapter three analyses representations of the Holy Grail in Mort d'Arthur (2010), Spamalot (2005), and Proof (2001). Each re-imagines the Grail as a symbol of achievement and power, drawing different conclusions about contemporary society's need for the mystical. Chapter four takes up performances of the Middle Ages in the public sphere, examining how Disneyland, Medieval Times, and the Renaissance Faire offer visitors varying degrees of freedom to experience the medieval through their own bodies. Throughout, I argue that performance encourages affective connections to the medieval past as a reflection of contemporary desires. / text

Βενέτη, Σοφία 01 July 2014 (has links)
Για τη μέτρηση της Τ1 εφαρμόσαμε δύο μεθόδους (Variable Flip Angle-VFA, Variable Time Inversion-VTI). / The typical Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is based in the phenomenon of the nuclear magnetic resonance where each individual word, helps us understand its origin. Specifically, the measured signal is generated by the nucleus of the matter's atoms. The interaction of the latter is magnetic and the final signal is detected in the form of spectrum or images through the phenomenon of nuclear magnetic resonance. Nevertheless, in the field of quantitative MRI, we can measure quantitative parameters like magnetic relaxation time, molecular diffusion, micro-viscosity etc., on which the final signals depend. The adjustment and calibration of the parameters of the final metering systems (system MRI) are crucial for the final results. Therefore, it is essential to use special phantoms for the calibration of the metering system as well as for the valuation and optimization of the metering processes. The control phantoms need to have specific characteristics in order to simulate as much as possible the magnetically measured parameters with respect to the ones of the human tissues. Such parameters are mainly the magnetic relaxation times (T1, T2, T2*) and the molecular diffusion. The phantoms should also provide the option of individual testing of the magnetic relaxation times T1 and T2. Moreover, these materials should have the same physical and chemical stability in time and their production needs to be financially effective. In this paper, special agarose phantoms were produced, by mixing gadolinium, a paramagnetic substance, in 20 different concentrations. Based on these phantoms we measured 8 times the magnetic relaxation times Τ1, Τ2, Τ2* within a period of 4 months. We noted that the most effective sequence for measuring T2 is by symmetrically spin echo sequence with the initial time having the value of 20ms. Using this method, the widest range of T2 values is covered with regards to soft tissues. Additionally, the variation coefficient permissible figures for such measurements is respected (CV=±5%). In order to measure T1 we used two methods, Variable Flip Angle-VFA, Variable Time Inversion-VTI. The most effective one, was proven to be the VTI one. VFA method was presenting delays in the measurements due to the inability to adjust the data in the function of signal reception description Y(FA) = f (FA). Moreover, we discovered that the paramagnetic ion of gadolinium is affecting the measurement of T1 regardless the molecular type or the type of chemical ligand that this belongs to. Finally, we noted that throughout the experiments, the highest inhomogeneity of the local magnetic field is found in the dense solutions of agarose and gadolinium mainly due to the paramagnetic properties of gadolinium which affects the local magnetic field of the measurement. High variability factor of inhomogeneity of the local magnetic field demonstrated the dilute gels and water because of the poor connection between the molecules of their material.
