Analys av relationen mellan titel och musik - i ett urval av Torsten Petres pianostycken

Öst, Ann-Sofie January 2006 (has links)
<p>The aim of this essay is to analyze the relationship between the title and the music in a selec-tion of piano pieces by Torsten Petre. Based on the work list, a categorization of the piano titles has been made and the categories have been named ”emotions, moods and minds”, ”na-ture”, ”mankind”, ”dances and similar titles”, ”supernatural beings, fairy creatures and popu-lar belief”, ”foreign countries and foreign culture”, ”nationalism and tradition”, ”artifacts”, and ”miscellaneous”. Two pieces from the category ”emotions, moods and minds” Skizzer för piano, third series Op. 38, 1905 have been chosen: no 2 Svikna drömmar and no 6 Mörka stunder. See appendix 1 for the work list and appendix 2 for the categorization.</p><p>As a background to the analysis, a biography about Torsten Petre as a musician and composer has been written. The background also consists of a description of the bourgeois salon, an environment in which his music was played, as well as of salon music as a genre.</p><p>As there is no established method for analyzing the relationship between title and music, I have based the analysis on Benestad´s thoughts about how we perceive music. I have carried out the analysis using the piano and playing the piano pieces repeatedly until I felt that I could describe the relationship. The analysis shows that using the title as a guideline there is a clear recognition between the title and music, which can be described thoroughly, almost like a story.</p>

Převody vlastnického práva k pozemkům / Transfer of ownership right to land

Němečková, Petra January 2012 (has links)
1 Abstract Transfers of land ownership This thesis provides a clear and comprehensive explanation on the transfer of land ownership and institutions associated with this issue. Land from other things in the legal sense is so different that it raises the need to create specific legal regulations, which contain the basic institutions and principles of land law. The special nature of the land is determined by its specific characteristics that distinguish it from all other things. Although it has a long tradition of land ownership, it has still not developed it's uniform and comprehensive legislation. General law for the transfer of land ownership is a civil code. Special regulations are cadastral law and the law on registration of ownership and other rights in real estate, the law on transfers of agricultural and forest land, Land Act and others. Due to the adoption of a new civil code, there are some places to identify and compare to the current legal system, and possible adjustment for the future. The thesis is divided into four parts. The first part contains general characteristics of land ownership, and describes its object, subject, content, institutions and basic concepts that are associated. The second part deals with various ways of transfer of title to land. The basic meaning of transfer is when the...

The Cuban American National Foundation and Its Role as an Ethnic Interest Group

Henn, Margaret Katherine January 2008 (has links)
Thesis advisor: James Hamm / In this thesis I discuss the Cuban American National Foundation (CANF) and its unique success as an ethnic interest group. I explain how the group came to be. I then address a number of reasons that scholars give as to why the CANF still exerts so much influence today. These reasons include but are not limited to: government favoritism during the cold war, the group's influence as a voting bloc, and campaign donations to prominent politicians. I discuss each of these theories and conclude that they all contain a grain of truth, yet none of them is significant enough to fully explain the situation. I conclude by finding the situation to be over-determined. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2008. / Submitted to: Boston College. Relate, Relative, Relationship

Kim, Angela January 2007 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Susan Michalczyk / Isaac Newton's third Law of Motion states that "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction." When things collide, there is an immutable effect on both the initiator and the reactor. In the same way, people are in constant motion, "colliding" with one another and irrevocably changing in the process. It was only when I had to live on my own at Boston College that I realized how much the people in my life had such a powerful influence in my life. They are the ones who guided me to evolve into the person I am today. Swayed by my scientific background, I had always believed that I was mostly predestined by my genetic makeup: who I will ultimately become was written in my DNA from conception. However, living in a suite with seven other women and developing close relationships with people who were so unique made me question everything: my beliefs, my approach, my reactions, my opinions. The first chapter is a personal experience I had with my mother in dealing with the cultural and language barriers we had to face. A great deal of our misunderstandings arose because I was the first generation in my family to be born in America and to pursue a higher education at college. Many children come to a point when they rebel against everything their parents tell them to do because they do not understand why their parents do and say the things they do. It is only after the child and the parents can come to a mutual comprehension of each other that steps can be made toward building a stronger relationship, a relationship that goes beyond the simple acts of obedience — or rebellion — and of giving commands. My parents had immigrated to America in their early twenties in pursuit of better opportunities for their future. It was not until I was older and when my relationship with my mother had deepened that I could begin to comprehend her side of the story, her journey, her past which had influenced her decisions that she had made for her children. In order to recount this experience creatively, pieces of conversations that I had with my mother are woven throughout my scenes and my mother's scenes, which, in their stark contrast, causes a palpable tension. Being able to recount the memories in retrospect gives the ability to compare each experience and to reach an understanding. The second chapter is an exploration of the ripple effect amongst strangers and how individuals are all connected in one way or another. Our influences are felt by those around us, even though we may not be directly connected with them. Opening with a dramatic scene, the reader is taken sequentially backwards in time, tracing the steps that the seemingly unconnected characters had taken, ultimately understanding the woman's motivation. Each individual's secrets and conditions all culminate into that moment where one person tries to take her own life. It is rarely one isolated moment that triggers action. Like a snowball that rolls down a hill, increasing its speed and its size over time, various facets of one's life and of other's lives collect together to produce a bigger consequence of which one is aware. The concluding chapter of this series explores the fictional world of a family dealing with the repercussions of their past actions. Each individual's decisions had ramifications for the rest of the family, which they struggle to deal with years later. Characters face guilt, anger, bitterness, and responsibility, as they are constantly reminded of the day when their lives came crashing down. Instead of telling these characters' story by starting from the past and proceeding to the present in chronological order, I decided to include pieces of information and scenes from their memories for the reader to piece together. In the end, the reader is left with having to make a decision: with whom will he or she ultimately sympathize? Will he or she even make that choice? This comprehensive and tedious project provided many obstacles and tensions throughout the year, but it was a journey and a journey worth taking. Before this year, I was never afforded the opportunity to pursue a goal I had set for myself after watching "A Walk to Remember" in high school: to write a novel. It has been rewarding to see the end product of constant revisions, of constant criticisms, and of constant growth. / Thesis (BA) — Boston College, 2007. / Submitted to: Boston College. Titrage automatique de documents textuels / Automatic titling of textual documents

Lopez, Cédric 01 October 2012 (has links)
During the first millennium BC, the already existing libraries needed to organize texts preservation, and were thus immediately confronted with the difficulties of indexation. The use of a title occurred then as a first solution, enabling a quick indentification of every work, and in most of the cases, helping to discern works thematically close to a given one. While in Ancient Greece, titles have had a little informative function, although still performing an indentification function, the invention of the printing office with mobile characters (Gutenberg, XVth century AD) dramatically increased the number of documents, which are today spread on a large-scale. The title acquired little by little new functions, leaning very often to sociocultural or political influence (in particular in journalistic articles).Today, for both electronic and paper documents, the presence of one or several titles is very often noticed. It helps creating a first link between the reader and the subject of the document. But how some words can have a so big influence? What functions do the titles have to perform at this beginning of the XXIth century? How can one automatically generate titles respecting these functions? The automatic titling of textual documents is one of the key domains of Web pages accessibility (W3C standards) such as defined in a standard given by associations about the disabled. For a given reader, the goal is to increase the readability of pages obtained from a search, since usual searches are often disheartening readers who must supply big cognitive efforts. For a Website designer, the aim is to improve the indexation of pages for a more relevant search. Other interests motivate this study (titling of commercial Web pages, titling in order to automatically generate contents, titling to bring elements to enhance automatic summarization). In this study, we use NLP (Natural Language Processing) methods and systems. While numerous works were published about indexation and automatic summarization, automatic titling remained discreet and knew some difficulties as for its positioning in NLP. We support in this study that the automatic titling must be nevertheless considered as a full task.Having defined problems connected to automatic titling, and having positioned this task among the already existing tasks, we provide a series of methods enabling syntactically correct titles production, according to several objectives. In particular, we are interested in the generation of informative titles, and, for the first time in the history of automatic titling, we introduce the concept of catchiness. Our TIT' system consists of three methods (POSTIT, NOMIT, and CATIT), that enables to produce sets of informative titles in 81% of the cases and catchy titles in 78% of the cases.

L'exhérédation / Disinheritance

Le Chuiton, Sandrine 30 November 2012 (has links)
The growing freedom relating to wills, which is hardly contained by the requirement to protect the family unit, makes disinheritance surprising, though such an approach does exist in practice. Disinheritance means direct or indirect deprivation – in whatever form - from a portion of inheritance, as decided by the testator only, without affecting the title as heir. The dichotomy between title and portion of inheritance reveals the actual inheritance-related link between the settler and the person entitled to inherit. The all but plenipotentiary effect of the title as heir is to be compared with the fundamentally absolutist desire of the testator. Though the testator can freely dispose of the property of which his/her estate is or should have been made up to all intents and purposes, the heir, though he/she may have no right to the heritage, can disturb the settlement of such estate, under the pretext of enforcing law and order and of administering such estate. The title as heir, deprived of any entitlement to all or any part of the portion of inheritance, which is to be differentiated from ownership of property conveyed, should however be perceived as an advantage to act, at the very most, not as a key aspect of operations relating to the settlement of a succession.

Equal Play, Equal Pay: Title IX Effects on Salary Gap at Division I Football Bowl Series and Football Championship Series Universities

Hodges, Kara 01 July 2019 (has links)
This thesis examines the impacts of Title IX compliance on salary gap of Division I Football Bowl Series and Football Championship Series universities male and female associate professors. Title IX athletic proportionality requirements have been established since the 1980’s and require that each university have an equal percentage of female student athletes as they do female undergraduates. This study uses the National Center for Education Statistics database, Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System to calculate salary gap between male and female associate professors and uses the Office of Civil Rights Equity in Athletics Database to calculate Title IX compliance. In this study paired t-tests and OLS regression are used to find the relationship between the salary gap and compliance of Title IX. This study found an inverse relationship between salary gap and Title IX compliance, refuting the hypothesis. Because Title IX compliance requires an equal proportion of student to athletes, the universities with significantly more female undergraduates were less likely to be Title IX compliant.

The Issues and Perceptions of Muslim Employees Concerning Religious Accommodation in the Workplace

White, Daniel Winfred 01 January 2018 (has links)
Religious accommodation in the workplace has been a growing issue in the business community, partly as a result of an increasing number of religious discrimination cases in the United States. The focus of this qualitative phenomenological study was to investigate Muslims' perceptions concerning religious accommodation using pluralism and religious pluralism as the theoretical frameworks. Data were collected via an online survey of Muslims from different regions throughout the United States with a sample size of 28 participants. Data from the online survey were analyzed using the Moustakas method of phenomenological analysis, which consists of epoché, phenomenological reduction, imaginative variation, and the synthesis of meanings and essences. Results showed the Muslim employees perceived there was a severe lack of religious accommodation provided by their companies. A plurality of the respondents stated their companies did not take any action toward providing them with religious accommodation. Findings also showed prayer to be one of the most important forms of religious expression in the workplace. The implications for positive social change are that companies begin to communicate more effectively with their Muslim employees. With the hope that leaders and public policymakers will implement changes that are beneficial to American society.
