Characterization,Sources, and Transformations of Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) in the Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE)Chen, Meilian 01 April 2011 (has links)
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is one of the largest carbon reservoirs on this planet and is present in aquatic environments as a highly complex mixture of organic compounds. The Florida coastal Everglades (FCE) is one of the largest wetlands in the world. DOM in this system is an important biogeochemical component as most of the nitrogen (N) and phosphorous (P) are in organic forms. Achieving a better understanding of DOM dynamics in large coastal wetlands is critical, and a particularly important issue in the context of Everglades restoration.
In this work, the environmental dynamics of surface water DOM on spatial and temporal scales was investigated. In addition, photo- and bio-reactivity of this DOM was determined, surface-to-groundwater exchange of DOM was investigated, and the size distribution of freshwater DOM in Everglades was assessed. The data show that DOM dynamics in this ecosystem are controlled by both hydrological and ecological drivers and are clearly different on spatial scales and variable seasonally. The DOM reactivity data, modeled with a multi-pool first order degradation kinetics model, found that fluorescent DOM in FCE is generally photo-reactive and bio-refractory. Yet the sequential degradation proved a “priming effect” of sunlight on the bacterial uptake and reworking of this subtropical wetland DOM. Interestingly, specific PARAFAC components were found to have different photo- and bio-degradation rates, suggesting a highly heterogeneous nature of fluorophores associated with the DOM. Surface-to-groundwater exchange of DOM was observed in different regions of the system, and compositional differences were associated with source and photo-reactivity. Lastly, the high degree of heterogeneity of DOM associated fluorophores suggested based on the degradation studies was confirmed through the EEM-PARAFAC analysis of DOM along a molecular size continuum, suggesting that the fluorescence characteristics of DOM are highly controlled by different size fractions and as such can exhibit significant differences in reactivity.

We studied through the solution of the Blume¿Emery¿Griffiths model on the Bethe lattice, the effect of the lattice coordination on the multicritical behavior of the ferromagnetic model (J > 0) in the region of repulsive biquadratic couplings, analyzing the particular case K/J = ?3,5. The study was performed for two different lattice coordinations (z = 4, 6) and zero magnetic field (H = 0). During the mapping analysis, 2-cicle orbits arose and therefore a division of the lattice into two interpenetrating sublattices was implemented. In this region the phase diagram displayed four distinct thermodynamic phases: paramagnetic, ferromagnetic, staggered quadrupolar and ferrimagnetic. In addition, the phase diagram displayed regions of numerical co-stability, that were investigated by calculating the free energy. The analytical free-energy expression was obtained by the inventive Gujrati¿s method. For coordination z = 4 the transition between the ferrimagnetic and the stag- gered quadrupolar phases is always continuous, while the transition of the ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic phases is discontinuous at low temperatures, turning into continuous for temperatures above the tricritical point. On the other hand, for coordination z = 6 the transition between the ferromagnetic and the ferrimagnetic phases is always continuous. However, the transition between the ferrimagnetic and the staggered quadrupolar phases is discontinuous for temperatures below the tricritical point and continuous for higher temperatures, in agreement with the phase diagrams obtained in the mean-field approximation / Mestrado / Física / Mestre em Física / 132988/2014-3 / CNPQ

A manutenção desses aspectos define a condição maxakali. / The present dissertation aims to understand a series of processes involved in the construction of the Maxakali person. To this, a bibliographical research accomplished prioritizing, particularly, the ethnographies produced over the last two decades. The key elements highlighted in this paper are the relevance of the rituals to construction of the Maxakali person and the songs chanted by and with yãmĩy spirits during rituals these rituals. The achievement of these songs produces the necessary conditions to life. It also ensures, with certain code of conduct face the same spirits, the post-mortem destiny as yãmĩy. The analysis of the transformations in the condition of the maxakali person lead us, by the end of this research, to assert that the central notion of joy – with the confused healthy and cheerful conditions in a unique desire state –, that defines exactly what means to be maxakali. It is in this sense that this dissertation supports the existence of three fundamental aspects of maxakali life: the respect of couvades practices; the presence in the rituals and, consequently, the exchanges made on these occasions; besides the maintenance of mentioned estate of joy. The perpetuation of these aspects defines maxakali condition.

Hyperbolic transformations on cubics in H²Marfai, Frank S. 01 January 2003 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis is to study the effects of hyperbolic transformations on the cubic that is determined by locus of centroids of the equilateral triangles in H² whose base coincides with the line y=0, and whose common vertex is at the origin. The derivation of the formulas within this work are based on the Poincaré disk model of H², where H² is understood to mean the hyperbolic plane. The thesis explores the properties of both the untransformed cubic (the original locus of centroids) and the transformed cubic (the original cubic taken under a linear fractional transformation).

A demo modelling tool that facilitates semi-automatic demo-to-BPMN transformationsGray, Thomas James January 2020 (has links)
Given the increasing emphasis on multi-perspective modelling, the University of Pretoria’s Industrial Engineering Department requires a tool that enables horizontal transformation between DEMO (Design and Engineering Methodology for Organisations) models and other models. This tool needs to be available free-of-charge, up-to-date, and vertically consistent, and should enable horizontal transformation between DEMO models and other models such as the BPMN (Business Process Model and Notation) models. Using design science research, this dissertation develops a part of this tool by first identifying and evaluating currently available tools, then discovering how other authors have approached model consistency and transformation, and finally developing a tool in ADOxx that supports the modelling of DEMO’s construction model– more specifically, the organisation construction diagram (OCD) and transaction product table (TPT) and transformations from the OCD to BPMN collaboration diagrams. The new tool, called DMT (Demo Modelling Tool), is demonstrated by modelling two case studies within the tool, and then performing four transformations. It is evaluated by having postgraduate participants model the same case study and rate the tool using pre-established usability criteria. / Dissertation (MEng)--University of Pretoria, 2020. / Industrial and Systems Engineering / MEng / Unrestricted

MANDO : a computer program for symbolic manipulation of differential operators generating continuous transformationsDavison, David Kenneth 01 January 1973 (has links)
The program MANDO efficiently performs computations involving pairs of operators, a single operator, and operators applied to functions, saving time and cost over pencil-·and-paper methods.
A versatile but compact data structure, defined under SPIT-BOL's facility for creation of datatypes, contains the operators (and functions) and provides a means for systematically referencing their relevant parts.
On input, functions and operators are written in a restricted but natural string format, for which the program can readily convert them to the internal data structure.
Central to the method of operation of the derivative routine is its ability to differentiate a function written as a string. This allows for a certain compactness in the internal form. To counteract the relative slowness of string processing in the derivative routine, the program keeps a table of derivatives repeated during the processing . The table is checked for the presence of the function and its derivative before the derivative sequence is applied.
Some simplification is performed. The simplification relies on the ordering sequence, followed by a sequence which cancels or combines terms that are alike, except, in general, for numerical multipliers.
