Films of Jacques Tati: the human vision

Chen, Ling January 2014 (has links)
Thesis (M.F.A.) PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / This paper examines how Jacques Tati’s films explore the human experience in the modern world, and how Tati expresses concerns for the human-based issues of identity and human relations in the contemporary context. Tati intends to search for and capture the basic, universal human qualities and shared interests of human nature within a spectrum of humanities and a diversity of eccentricity and idiosyncrasy. His films are full of small moments that capture spontaneous human bonding and create opportunities for unexpected relations. While representations of contrasting worlds and ways of life are always present in his films, Tati does not simply dismiss the modern world or hope to retreat to the past. Instead, he proposes alternative possibilities of living in the modern world, in which the spirit of freedom, play, and spontaneity are celebrated. Tati reimagines human life in the modern world as he projects a vision of re-centering the human presence and of anchoring modern life with humanity and human connection. / 2031-01-01

Tystnaden i ljudfilm : En studie i Jacques Tatis ”Mon Uncle”

Hellström, Staffan January 2008 (has links)
Hellström, Staffan. Tystnaden i ljudfilm - En studie i Jacques Tatis ”Mon Uncle”. C-uppsats.

A Syntactic Analysis of Motion Predicates in Southern Tati (Takestani Dialect)

Neda Taherkhani (7041479) 16 August 2019 (has links)
This dissertation provides a syntactic representation of Motion Predicates (MPs) expressed by series of verbs known as Serial Verb Constructions (SVCs) in Southern Tati –an Indo-European language spoken mainly in the Northwestern parts of Iran. This study addresses the sub-eventive decomposition of MPs by following the theoretical framework established by generative-constructivists like Borer (2005) and Ramchand (2008), as implemented for MPs in Benedicto and Salomon (2014).This dissertation also contributes to the documentation of Southern Tati, which iscategorized by UNESCO as ‘definitely’endangered.<br>

Protagonistas impensáveis; muralha do quase; prestígio subalterno: uma trilogia inspirada por mulheres negras, visibilidades midiáticas, territórios do Rio / Unthinkable protagonists; the wall of the almost; subaltern prestige: a trilogy inspired by black women, media visibility, territories of the Rio

In the present study, I intend to show narratives of/about Brazilian Black Women born and/or residents in the city of Rio de Janeiro that due to the artistic and cultural practices, are covered by the media visibility. This is a qualitative research situated in the postcolonial studies and in the everyday studies. Nega Gizza and Tati Quebra Barraco are the stars of the investigation. The narratives were collected in cultural artifacts midiatizados available to the general public, throughout the twenty-first century. Findings indicate that the city of Rio de Janeiro, the place of research, is a driving force of narratives, of discourses and active devices nationally about black women. These maintain respects of essentializing and subalternity in relation to Brazilian black women. These respects outweigh positive factors of supposed media visibility as well as processes resignifications of identity and empowerment processes. Highlights: 1) the discourses about the ugliness of black women as opposed to hegemonic aesthetic discourse; 2) the discourses about the suspect blackbody. Thus, the device of turn black into white whitening continues to operate with plenty of power in the city of Rio de Janeiro, especially in view of what is expected of women. These findings inspired the construction of the following trilogy: unthinkable protagonists; the wall of the almost; subaltern prestige. The subaltern prestige is the racialized social mobility. The wall of the almost is responsible for the absence of power networks with which the black population may count to achieve the social mobility. Unthinkable protagonists not have attributes according the aesthetic discourse legitimacy. They are interdicted to occupy the leading role of the show. Paradoxically, however, at some unexpected moment, they get up and they talk.

A apropriação crítica da arquitetura e urbanismo modernos através da linguagem cinematográfica: Playtime, 1967, de Jacques Tati / A critical appropriation of modern architecture and urbanism through cinematographic language: Playtime, 1967, by Jacques Tati

Mardegan, Monica Silvia Gosso 13 May 2009 (has links)
The relation between cinema and other forms of expression, as well as other kinds of art, has raised great interest among academic research, especially post-graduation studies, as part of a variety of investigative approaches to the subject of filmmaking from the 1980s onwards. Based on the relation between architecture/urbanism and cinema, this work focuses on the interaction of dynamic forms of expression, taking into account the polysemic context under which aesthetic interests and artistic forms operate. The choice of the object of study, the film Playtime (Tempo de diversão, 1967) by French filmmaker Jacques Tati (1907-1982), was due to address a central issue in the French cinema experience, namely its critical view in the dialogue with the cultural sensitivity changes caused by modern architecture and urbanism. Cinema became an important topic in the discussion of society and culture, as a means to question the role of architecture as an instance of power and representation, as opposed to the quality of interaction between individuals and social groups in urban life. The focus of the analysis, by uncovering the proposed truth of the film, aims to understand the relation between work and audience in a search for renewing the discussion of art and society.
