The Nature of Religious Melancholy: Edward Taylor's Poetic Treatments of a 17th Century EpidemicJohnson, Sheena K 12 August 2014 (has links)
Edward Taylor indicates an awareness of 17th century religious melancholy in his "Preparatory Meditations," but the minister is largely excluded from current discourse surrounding religious melancholy in Puritan communities. Taylor's presence in this conversation serves to further understanding of religious melancholy in America and also of the complex nature of the condition that is of interest at the present time. Through an analysis of dominant images of the conversion experience from Edward Taylor's poetry, this thesis argues that Taylor provides intimate knowledge of the nature of religious melancholy and also offers a treatment option for the ailing Puritan in the form of hope for salvation.

Ethically Authentic: Escaping Egoism Through Relational AuthenticityMalo-Fletcher, Natalie 18 April 2011 (has links)
Philosophers who show interest in authenticity tend to narrowly focus on its capacity to help people evade conformity and affirm individuality, a simplistic reduction that neglects authenticity’s moral potential and gives credence to the many critics who dismiss it as a euphemism for excessive individualism. Yet when conceived ethically, authenticity can also allow for worthy human flourishing without falling prey to conformity’s opposite extreme—egoism. This thesis proposes a relational conception of authenticity that can help prevent the often destructive excess of egoism while also offsetting the undesirable deficiency of heteronomy, concertedly moving agents towards socially responsible living. It demonstrates how authenticity necessarily has ethical dimensions when rooted in existentialist and dialogical frameworks. It also defines egoism as a form of self-deception rooted in flawed logic that cannot be considered “authentic” by relational standards. Relational authenticity recognizes the interpersonal relationships and social engagements that imbue meaning into agents’ lives, fostering a balance between personal ambitions and social obligations, and enabling more consistently moral lifestyles.

Deliberative democrats have argued that democracy requires citizens to seek consensus, using a familiar style of principle-based moral argument. However, critics like Iris Young object that deliberative democracy’s favoured model of reasoning is inadequate for resolving deep value conflicts. She and others have suggested that the aim of improving understanding across political differences could be achieved if our conception of legitimate democratic discourse were broadened to include a significant role for narrative. The question is whether such a revision would amount to abandoning the deliberative democratic goal of seeking reasonable resolutions of value conflict. This thesis argues that a narrative approach to deliberative democracy can realize its commitment to reasoned justification, while preserving the significance of differing perspectives and promoting mutual understanding. The narrative-contextualist approach is developed and illustrated with reference to public debate over issues such as cultural accommodation and historical justice.

*Translation and the Bouchard-Taylor Commission: Translating Images, Translating Cultures, Translating QuébecDesjardins, Renée 29 April 2013 (has links)
In December 2010, the National Post published an article discussing the rather costly enterprise of state-sanctioned official bilingualism in Canada. According to statistics provided by the Fraser Institute (2006), translation and interpretation represented 15% of the total federal government budget spending allocated to bilingualism, a cost that many Canadian commentators deemed “unnecessary.” Shifting demographics and diverse immigration flows (Census data, 2011) are also having a significant impact on Canada’s linguistic landscape, forcing policy-makers to consider whether the Official Languages Act (and thus translation) would benefit from innovative reform. Using this contextual backdrop as its main impetus, this dissertation argues that translation, as defined and practiced in Canada, needs to be broadened for a number of reasons, including accounting for technological advancements, for the increasingly web-based dissemination of translated materials, and for the reality of evolving markets. Tymoczko (2008) has championed *translation as an open-cluster concept, a theoretical perspective that has found resonance in this project, given that the notion is the central premise upon which three additional conceptualizations (i.e. *translation sub-types) are founded. The first sub-type, intersemiotic translation, is explained at length and constitutes the focal point of the project. Instead of using a Peircean approach, the dissertation develops a model based on visual social semiotics in order to facilitate the application of intersemiotic translation in not only professional settings but research contexts as well. The second sub-type, cultural translation, builds on insights from the 1980s and 90s cultural turn, with a specific focus on the relationship between the representation of Canadian micro-cultures and intersemiotic translation. In other words, the effects of these translation processes will also be analyzed. Finally, civic translation is proposed as a third *translation sub-type, which offers a potential framework for multicultural management in democratic countries facing the challenges of globalization. A case study using content from the 2006-2008 debate surrounding reasonable accommodation—with specific attention given to the activities of the Consultation Commission on Accommodation Practices Related to Cultural Differences (also known as the Bouchard-Taylor Commission)—is woven through each chapter, illustrating all three sub-types of *translation. The case study provides compelling examples of why translation practices in Canada should move beyond verbal and state-sanctioned definitions. The novelty and contribution of this research project are manifold: it transcends traditional verbocentric approaches in TS; it responds to other scholars’ claims that there is a lack of case studies that involve text-image relationships and/or explore the role of translation in the news media in a Canadian context; it explores multimodality and its significance for TS in an era of increased Web presence; it showcases a Canadian case study; and, finally, it explores cultural representation through a translation-based framework.

From recognition to agonistic reconciliation: a critical multilogue on Indigenous-settler relations in CanadaHarland, Fraser 20 December 2012 (has links)
Theories of recognition, once seen as a promising approach for addressing the politics of difference and identity, have recently faced a sustained critique. This thesis participates in that critical project by confronting two recognition theorists – Charles Taylor and Nancy Fraser – with the injustices of colonialism in Canada as articulated by Indigenous scholars, particularly Dale Turner. The resultant critical multilogue highlights the shortcomings in each theory, but also points to their key strengths. These insights inform a discussion of agonistic reconciliation, a concept that transcends the limits of the recognition paradigm and offers hope for more just relations between Indigenous peoples and settlers in Canada. / Graduate

Chapter one begins with a definition and exposition of the concept of theodicy, and a topology for characterizing comparative theodicies is suggested. It is argued that the basis on which theodicies might be compared is the foundational ontological principles on which they are built. Chapter two is a lengthy discussion regarding the meaning of terms such as omnipotence omniscience omnibenevolence, moral evil and natural evil. Chapter three begins with a critical analysis of a variety of theodicies found throughout the history of Christian theology. The final conclusion drawn in this chapter is that none of the proposed answers is acceptable. Acceptability is measured in three important ways: First, is the position logically consistent, second, does it conform, at least in a broad way, to the major tenents of the Christian form of life, and third, does this position take the individual sufferer seriously? In chapter four a foundation is laid for a response to the problem of evil which is to follow in chapter five. In this penultimate chapter an analysis of the Book of Job is offered which centers on the interpretation of Yahweh's speeches out of the whirlwind. It is suggested that the crux of Jobs repentance is to be understood in connection with Job "seeing God." In chapter five, an attempt is made, using the help of Karl Barth, D. M. Mackinnon, P. T. Forsyth, Ludwig Wittgenstein and John Wisdom, as well as some insights gained from chapter four, to argue that there is a teleological response to the problem of evil that is logically consistent, true to the Christian form of life and sensitive to the needs of the individual sufferer.

Bifurcations and symmetries in viscous flowKobine, James Jonathan January 1992 (has links)
The results of an experimental study of phenomena which occur in the flow of a viscous fluid in closed domains with discrete symmetries are presented. The purpose is to investigate the role which ideas from low-dimensional dynamical systems have to play in describing qualitative changes that take place with variation of the governing parameters. Such a descriptive framework already exists for the case of the Taylor-Couette system, where the domain possesses a continuous azimuthal symmetry group. The present investigation is aimed at establishing the typicality of previously reported behaviour under progressive reductions of azimuthal symmetry. In the first investigations, the fixed outer circular cylinder of the standard system is replaced with one of square cross-section. Thus there is now discrete Ζ<sub>4</sub> symmetry in the azimuthal direction. Knowledge of the two-dimensional flow field is used to establish the nature of the steady three-dimensional motion equivalent to Taylor vortex flow. It is shown that similar bifurcation sequences exist in both standard and square systems for the case of very small aspect ratio where a single Taylor cell is formed. This flow develops as the result of a bifurcation which breaks the Ζ<sub>2</sub> symmetry that is imposed on the annulus by two solid stationary ends. The study is then extended to consider time-dependent effects in the square system. Two different oscillatory single-cell flows are identified, and it is shown that each is the result of a Hopf bifurcation. Selection of a particular dynamic mode is found to depend on the aspect ratio of the system. A low-dimensional bifurcation structure is uncovered which connects the two modes in parameter space, and involves a novel type of steady single-cell flow. Finally, observations are reported of a nontrivial type of dynamical behaviour which bears strong resemblance to motion found in a circularly symmetric Taylor-Couette system that is related to the Šilnikov mechanism for finite-dimensional chaos. A second variant on the Taylor-Couette system is considered where the outer cylinder is shaped like a stadium. The effect is to reduce further the overall symmetry of the domain to a Ζ<sub>2</sub> × Ζ<sub>2</sub> group. The two-dimensional flow field is investigated using both numerical and experimental techniques. Time-dependent phenomena are then investigated in the three-dimensional flow over a relatively wide range of aspect ratio. It is found that a sequence of a Hopf bifurcation followed by period-doubling bifurcations exists up to a certain aspect ratio, beyond which there is an apparently sudden and reversible transition between regular and irregular dynamical behaviour. Although this transition is not of a low-dimensional nature, the experimental results suggest that it exists as the result of a coalescence of the bifurcations which are found at lower values of aspect ratio.

TLD Measurements on Patients being treated with a Taylor Spatial Frame : Using Radiation from Na18F PET/CT Studies and from Naturally Occurring RadioisotopesMirzadeh, Kousha January 2014 (has links)
Background: In an ongoing study conducted at Karolinska Institutet & Karolinska University Hospital, Positron Emission Tomography (PET)/Computed Tomography (CT) scans are performed on patients with tibia fractures and deformations treated with Taylor Spatial Frames (TSFs) in order to monitor their bone remodeling progress. Each patients receive an administration of approximately 2 MBq/kg bodyweight of Na18F associated with PET scans on two sessions, six and twelve weeks after the attachment of the TSF. These PET/CT scans provide information about the progress of the healing bone and can be used to estimate the optimal time point for de-attachment of the TSF. The Standardized Uptake Value (SUV) is used as a measure of the rate of bone remodeling for these patients, however, there is a need for verification of this practice by a method independent of the PET scanner. Furthermore, information regarding the biodistribution of the Na18F throughout the body of these patients and the effects of the TSF on the CT scan X‑rays is required. Additionally, an investigation of alternative methods that have the potential to provide similar information with a lower absorbed dose to the patients is desirable. Materials and methods: Thermoluminescent Dosimeters (TLDs) were attached on the skin at the position of the heart, urinary bladder, femurs, fracture, and the contralateral tibia of twelve patients during the first one hour and five minutes after the administration of the Na18F. Additional TLD measurements were performed during the CT scan of two of these patients. From the PET scan images, SUVs at the fracture site of these patients were collected. An investigation of the possibility of exploiting the “naturally” occurring bone seeking radionuclide Strontium-90 (90Sr) in the human body to gain information about the fracture site was undertaken. Using a 90Sr source, three different detection techniques were evaluated and a practical methodology for in vivo measurements on the tibia fracture patients was developed. As it was concluded that TLD based measurements were the most suitable technique for this purpose, and it was tested on five patients with tibia fractures. Results: From the collected TLD data, it was concluded that for these patients the urinary bladder is the organ receiving the greatest amount of absorbed dose and the organ most affected as the administered activity exceeds 2 MBq/kg. On average, a three times higher surface dose was measured on the tibia fracture compared to the un-fractured tibia. A linear relationship between the surface dose and SUVmax was shown. A strong positive correlation between the activity concentration at the fracture site and the amount of injected activity was found, and it was demonstrated that this also affects the SUVs. For patients who were administered different amounts of Na18F for the two PET scans, maximum activity concentrationwas less affected than mean activity concentration. It was concluded that TSF’s effect on the scatter of the X-rays to organs higher up in the body is negligible. Regarding “naturally” occurring 90Sr in the human body, no higher activity at the fractured tibia compared to the non‑fractured tibia could be found. Conclusions: This project assessed the accumulation of Na18F in the fracture site of patients treated with TSF by a method independent of the PET scanner. The methodology of using SUVs as an indicator for bone remodeling was verified. It was shown that the uptake of Na18F by the fracture site is strongly correlated to the amount of injected activity. The importance of considering the amount of injected activity when evaluating and comparing SUVs was highlighted. In vivo measurements using LiF:Mn TLDs did not indicate any quantifiable higher concentration of 90Sr at the fracture in the tibia bone.

In this study, novel Ray Based finite difference method for Time Domain electromagnetics(RBTD) has been developed. Instead of solving Maxwell&rsquo / s hyperbolic partial differential
equations directly, Geometrical Optics tools (wavefronts, rays) and Taylor series have been utilized. Discontinuities of electromagnetic fields lie on wavefronts and propagate along
rays. They are transported in the computational domain by transport equations which are ordinary differential equations. Then time dependent field solutions at a point are constructed by using Taylor series expansion in time whose coefficients are these transported distincontinuties. RBTD utilizes grid structure conforming to wave fronts and
rays and treats all electromagnetic problems, regardless of their dimensions, as one dimensional problem along the rays. Hence CFL stability condition is implemented always at one dimensional eqaulity case on the ray. Accuracy of RBTD depends on the accuracy of grid generation and numerical solution of transport equations. Simulations for isotropic
medium (homogeneous/inhomogeneous) have been conducted. Basic electromagnetic phenomena such as propagation, reflection and refraction have been implemented.
Simulation results prove that RBTD eliminates numerical dispersion inherent to FDTD and is promising to be a novel method for computational electromagnetics.
