The Analysis Of The Perceptions Of English Language Instructors At Tobb University Of Economics And Technology Regarding Inset Content

Gultekin, Inci 01 October 2007 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to analyze the extent of instructors at TOBB University of Economics and Technology, Department of Foreign Languages regard in-service training programs crucial for their professional development. Another aspect of the study was to identify the professional needs of the instructors teaching preparatory classes as well as to determine the preferred instructional methods of an INSET program. The final aim of the study was to determine whether there are statistically significant differences between novice and experienced instructors regarding their needs and expectation of an in-service training program. The study was conducted among thirty-nine instructors who are teaching preparatory classes at TOBB ETU, DFL. The chairperson of the DFL also took part in the study. Data from the 39 instructors were collected through questionnaires which were developed to uncover the opinions of instructors in terms of the characteristics of effective in-service training programs, to identify the needs of the instructors and determine the instructional methods preferred in-service training program. The questionnaires included both Likert scale and open-ended items. Moreover, 50-minute lessons of 10 instructors were video recorded. Video recordings aimed to identify the needs of the instructors that should be addressed through an in-service training program. Finally, interviews were conducted with 10 instructors whose classes were video recorded. The aim of the interviews was to enable the instructors to reflect on the findings of the questionnaires and the video recordings. Another interview was conducted with the chairperson of the DFL to uncover to what extent his perceptions about in-service training activities correlate with those of the instructors. Data collected through the instruments were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Close-ended items were analyzed via the SPSS program and mean scores for each item were calculated besides an independent sample t-test. The qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of the study revealed that the instructors believe INSET is crucial for their professional development, they would like to keep on track with new developments in the field of ELT and participate in seminars and conferences as part of INSET programs. In terms of the professional needs, it was found that instrcutors need to be trained on teaching speaking skills and pronunciation, written and oral correction, promoting student autonomy, dealing with classroom management problems, teaching mixed-ability groups, raising language awareness of students and reflecting on their own experience. The t-test results demonstrated that there was a statistical significance between the answers of novice and experienced instructors concerning being trained in &lsquo / teaching vocabulary,&rsquo / &lsquo / teaching grammar&rsquo / and &lsquo / improving in written and oral correction strategies.&rsquo / It was found that experienced teachers are particularly interested in training sessions on teaching grammar, teaching vocabulary, and improving written and oral correction strategies. As a result of the findings, an ongoing INSET program model was proposed for the Department of Foreign Languages at TOBB ETU.

An Evaluation Of The In-service Teacher Training Program For The Newly Hired Instructors In The School Of Foreign Languages At Middle East Technical University

Ucar Duzan, Canan 01 February 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the in-service teacher training program implemented for the newly hired teachers in the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Middle East Technical University. The study was conducted with the help of three groups of participants who were the trainees who participated in the training program in the 2004-2005 academic year, the experienced teachers who were current members of the SFL and the teacher trainers. Data from the 12 trainees were collected through two questionnaires which were developed to identify the needs of the trainees at the start of the program and their degree of satisfaction at the end. Moreover, an interview was conducted with the trainees. Data from the 4 teacher trainers were collected through a questionnaire and it aimed to identify their expectations from and satisfaction with the program. 45 experienced teachers, on the other hand, were involved in the study to understand whether they need in-service training. The questionnaires included both Likert scale and open-ended items. Data collected through the instruments were analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. Closed-ended items were analyzed via the SPSS program and mean scores for each item were calculated. To identify if there is any statistically significant difference between the mean scores, a paired-sample t-test was calculated. The qualitative data were analyzed through content analysis. The results of the study revealed that the trainees especially need to improve their practical teaching skills which are immediately necessary in the new setting. Their degree of satisfaction was also found to be high. The results about the experienced teachers showed that they did not feel the need to enroll in an in-service training program. The findings about the teacher trainers revealed that they are generally happy with the program although they listed some suggestions for improvement.

Livro arbítrio: um estudo sobre as funções e os usos do livro didático de espanhol no ensino médio / Teachers choices: a study on the functions and uses of the Spanish textbook at high school level

Amendola, Roberta 17 March 2017 (has links)
Textbooks have been, historically, a core resource in Education. As the object of study for many researchers, they are generally analyzed from the point of view of methodology and content. However, studies on the functions and use of textbooks in the field of teaching Spanish as foreign language in Brazil are scarce. The present study traces back the history of textbooks related to educational policies and examines the possible functions and uses of textbooks, grounded on some official national documents such as the National Curriculum Parameters PCN (BRASIL, 1998b); Curricular Orientations for the High School Level OCEM (BRASIL, 2006) and the Basic Schooling National Curricular Guidelines DCN (BRASIL, 2013d) and on studies carried out by researchers in the field, mainly Choppin (2002, 2004); Gérard; Roegiers (1998); Lajolo (1996); Oliveira; Guimarães; Bomény (1984) and Richards (2002). In addition, the study presents aspects related to: the initial training and continuous development of practising teachers in the country and their impact on the role of the textbook in class, under the terms of the Law on Brazilian Education Guidelines and Bases LDB (BRASIL, 1996a) and on Decision number 2 of the National Council of Education (BRASIL, 2015e); issues related to the (de)(a)ppreciation of the teaching staff, according to the DCN (National Curricular Guidelines) (BRASIL, 2013d) and Nóvoa (1999); among other topics related to teachers relationship with the textbook, as found in Almeida Filho (2010), Eres Fernández (2009), Fiscarelli (2008), Leffa (2008a) and Munakata (1997, 2012a). We give voice to two teachers from the State of São Paulo one from a state school and one from a private institution and through them and the legal and theoretical framework, we approach the daily use of the textbook in the area of Spanish. To that aim, we made use of three complementary research instruments: questionnaires, interviews and attendance to classes, and then triangulated the data obtained. We observed the way in which the textbook is used and found out that only in rare instances the textbook was supplemented by other resources. The conclusion is that the main function of the textbook is referential (CHOPPIN, 2004, p. 552-553) and that teachers seldom exercise discretion in its use, negatively affecting the teaching and learning process by not giving due importance to the specificities of each learning situation. In view of these findings, we credit the practice of dependent use of the textbook to the history of depreciation of teaching, to the inefficient qualification available to teachers and to the beliefs on language teaching under which those teachers have operated. With the aim of empowering teachers to enjoy a desirable autonomy in relation to the textbook, we suggest that there is a need to rethink the content of teacher development courses. We also observed that the access to teaching resources or to other resources which may be a complement to the former does not correlate directly to the socioeconomic level of the school, but rather, with the level of commitment of the professionals involved. In conclusion, with a view to contributing to discussions and improvements related to the object of our study and to its daily use in the classroom, we propose alternatives for the creation and use of this educational resource which has such a crucial role in the classroom.

Evaluation Of The In-service Teacher Training Program

Sahin, Vildan 01 September 2006 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of the in-service teacher training program, The Certificate for Teachers of English (CTE), run jointly by two departments: The Department of Basic English (DBE) and the Department of Modern Languages (DML) of the School of Foreign Languages (SFL) at Middle East Technical University (METU) in terms of whether it achieved its objectives and to provide suggestions regarding the redesigning of the program for the following years. The model used for evaluating the program was one proposed by Kirkpatrick (1998 / first devised in 1959). This model entails 4 levels of evaluation to carry out while evaluating training programs. Reaction, Learning, Behavior and Results. The research questions focused in this study are all in line with these four levels. The participants of the study were four folded. The main participants were the trainees attending the program. (N=6, 2 from DML / 4 from DBE). Another group of participants were the trainers of the program. (N=2). The third group of participants was the chairpersons at the two departments. Finally, data were collected from the students of the trainees and non trainees. Data was collected via questionnaires from the trainees and their students, interviews with trainees, trainers and chairpersons, observations of sessions of the program and trainees&rsquo / lessons, and related documents of the program. The data collected was analyzed qualitatively using the Miles and Huberman (1994) procedure for analyzing qualitative data: data reduction, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. Results revealed that the CTE program was effective in terms of achieving its objectives. However, there could be improvements in certain components of the program. Another result of the study was that the application of Kirkpatrick&rsquo / s training program evaluation model was not very effective in the evaluation of the CTE program. The main drawback was that the model is a nonlinear one which made it difficult to concentrate on a particular level of evaluation at a particular time. Therefore the suggestion for a more linear and definite model for the evaluation of the CTE program was proposed.

A CONSTRUÇÃO DA DOCÊNCIA EM MÚSICA NO ESTÁGIO SUPERVISIONADO: UM ESTUDO NA UFSM

Buchmann, Letícia Taís 12 May 2008 (has links)
This thesis was carried out following the research line Education and Arts of the Postgraduate Education Program at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), Brazil, and it is one of the works originated in the research group FAPEM (Qualification, Action and Research in Musical Education), registered at the Brazilian research support agency CNPq. This work aims at investigating music teaching development in the supervised pre-service teacher training of the Music Course Licentiate s degree at UFSM, from the point of view of a group of six trainees. In order to do so, we sought to understand the trainees conception of training and its relation to primary and secondary education. Besides taking into account the laws related to the theme, our theoretical references included authors from the fields of Education (such as ALARCÃO; TAVARES, 1987; GARCIA, 1999; PIMENTA; LIMA, 2004) and Musical Education (such as MATEIRO, 2002a, 2002b; MATTANA, 2005; BEINEKE; BELLOCHIO, 2007) whose research works focus on teachers professional development and supervised pre-service teacher training. The adopted methodological approach was qualitative, including semi-structured interviews, memory stimulus interviews and video recordings of the trainees classes. Criteria for selecting participants were the trainees interest and availability as well as the researcher s availability for going to the schools at the time the trainees were teaching in order to film them. Data were analyzed following their organization into two categories: (1) conceptions of training, including the supervisor s role, and (2) teaching practice at school, considering that the training was carried out in pairs, its relation to primary and secondary education and the trainees experiences. Based on our interpretation and dialogue with the references concerning teaching development in supervised pre-service teacher training, it was possible to reach some conclusions about music teachers professional development. Thus, we believe this research may contribute relevant data to the teaching profession. We pointed out the sharing of actions by the trainees and their supervisor s mediation, as well as problems and considerations regarding teaching development during training and its relation to music teachers professional development.
