Faculty use of technology resources: Frequency, purposes, and instructional assignments for students.

Blanco, Carlos Alberto January 1996 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to identify several key elements regarding the use of technology resources by a teacher education faculty within a College of Education located in the Southwest United States. This study employed both quantitative and qualitative research methods to: (1) report the current frequency of use of technology resources by the professors sampled in the study, (2) describe the major purposes for their use of technology as communicated via the survey data or through interviews with selected study participants, or both, (3) describe the types of technologies that are currently being employed by the professors studied, (4) describe the degree to which these professors require the use of technology by their students, and (5) explain the purposes behind these requirements as revealed by the selected professors through interview responses. The results of the survey data revealed that faculty use of technology for instructional purposes was minimal, the major purposes for which faculty in education courses use technology was to assist them in streamlining instruction and assignments, and that a limited number of education faculty required the use of technology resources by their education students. An analysis of interviews of the nine most frequent users of technology indicated that the use of technology appears to be a result of early positive experiences with technology. The purpose for use of technology for instructional purposes by frequent users is variable--such as developing an awareness of technology in their students and for modeling technology behaviors and classroom integration of technology. Recommendations from this study include the following. All faculty should be in the possession of a computer equipped with telecommunications capabilities for electronic mail and access to the Internet. Faculty should also have access to an extensive selection of technologies for use in education. Additional recommendations are: release time should be given to faculty for the purpose of attending technology demonstrations and conferences, colleges should hire only those new faculty members who are already somewhat proficient in the use of technology, and proficiency in the use of technology should be one component in the promotion and tenure process.

13 August 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / The aim of this study was to investigate the potential contribution that personal leadership can make to the professional development of teachers. The problem under investigation was the shortcomings in terms of the negative and demotivated professional attitude and values that are evident among South African educators. The general finding was therefore that personal leadership is a particularly appropriate approach to enhance the pre-service and in-service training of teachers because it addresses the one aspect of professional development most neglected in training, namely personal and professional attitudes and values.

The use of information technology in initial teacher education in historically black universities in the Northern Province

03 July 2012 (has links)
D.Ed. / The use IT is increasingly becoming a reality in education in South Africa (SA). Despite this very few historical black universities (HBU's) utilize it in the training of their student teachers. For this reason the use of IT by student teachers in the historical black universities in the Northern Province has been disappointing. This study raises questions for investigation regarding the use of information technology in initial teacher education (ITE) in the Northern Province (South Africa), which ultimately enabled the researcher to generate an approach for the implementation of IT in initial teacher education in Universities in the Northern Province. In order to reach possible solutions for the stated problem and to suggest an approach for the implementation of IT in ITE, a literature study on information technology in initial teacher education was undertaken. An empirical study was also conducted which included: • Interviews with deans of the schools of education (faculties of education) in the two Universities in the Northern Province. • HOD's of the department of Educational Practice (The department of Curriculum Studies and Teachers Education). • Lecturers in the faculties of Education (School of Education) • HED & UED student teachers at these two universities. • Computer Centre Personnel at these two institutions. • Colleges of Makhado and Mokopane were also visited with a view to observe what was happening in terms of IT training and, to interview rectors and lecturers responsible for IT training.

The experiences of teacher education students involved in a community service-learning project

19 April 2010 (has links)
M.Ed. / The aim of this study was to explore and gain a deeper understanding of the experiences of teacher education students involved in a community service-learning (CSL) project. This study comes at a time in which CSL is increasingly being incorporated into the higher education context and draws on the views of proponents of CSL who argue that it has the potential to positively benefit the academic-intellectual, personal, interpersonal and social development of those who participate in CSL activities. The research strategy for this study was grounded within the interpretative research paradigm using qualitative research methods to explore how teacher education students make sense of their realities, situations and experiences while participating in a CSL project. This qualitative study employed in-depth interviews, participant observation and photographs as data collection methods. The data was analysed using the constant comparative method of data analysis to search for recurring themes and patterns. From the findings, it was clear that the participants had overwhelmingly positive experiences of the CSL project. They reported that relationships were forged and strengthened, that their perceptions about themselves and others changed, that CSL offered another dimension to teaching and that their service encounter awoke a desire to continue service after the CSL project was complete. Students cited some limiting factors that they felt prevented them from optimally benefiting from the CSL experience. These included a perceived lack of structure, difficulty in communicating with the children at the site and the emotionally draining nature of the experience. I conclude with a number of implications for the curriculation of CSL in teacher education.

January 2019 (has links)
But are such regulatory instruments sufficient for what is sought? What knowledge is passed on to the in-service teacher for curriculum and official compliance? What is the course established for the practice of Philosophy teachers? Is it possible to use other methods that favor the effectiveness of what is imposed to be realized? To answer these questions, the general objective was to investigate the continuing in-service training offered by SEE-SP and whether they develop the educator to meet what is expected for each series served. To do so, as specific objectives, to detail the course prospected in these resources for the teaching of Philosophy and their respective contents, skills and abilities in the public education of the State of São Paulo. In addition, how the in-service training continues and its repercussion in the classroom. These problems start from the need to solve a series of dilemmas that many teachers of the discipline of Philosophy face in the exercise of teaching in this segment of Basic Education and public. The present investigation is classified by a descriptive qualitative approach, where a documental analysis and bibliographic research was done. The... For this reason, the main goal of this work is to investigate the pedagogical trends in teachers education that underlie the Pedagogical Plan of the Course of Letras (PPC 2014), from the Center of Letras, Communication and Arts in the State University of North Paraná, campus in Jacarezinho∕PR (CLCA∕CJ), and to indicate the characteristics of this model of development. The questions that guided the present research were: Which pedagogical theories underlie the development of the PPC 2014 of the CLCA? And what is the profile (type) of teacher, resulting from this education? The specific goals were: a) to identify the pedagogical trends that underlie the PPC 2014 of the course of Letras at the CLCA; b) to summarize the profile of the future teacher, resulting from this education; c) to investigate high school graduates' concept of school education, considering those whose teachers graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Letras, which curriculum design was oriented by the current National Curricular Guidelines (DCNs); d) to discuss if the pedagogical theories underlying the PPC 2014 provide conditions for the egress to critically engage in teaching, adopting the ideals of an education committed to teaching and promoting human emancipation. Therefore, we sought to present and discuss the concepts of different curriculum and pedagogical theories, and issues related to the mercantilization of scholl education, in the current context, as elements that circumscribe the initial teachers education. This work presents, then, results of a bibliographical research and documentary analysis, based on the qualitative ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor

Teachers’ Understanding and Usage of Scientific Data Visualizations for Teaching Topics in Earth and Space Science

Connolly, Rachel Berger January 2019 (has links)
Scientific data visualizations are the products, and increasingly a core practice, of modern computational science across all domains. With recent science education standards emphasizing student engagement in practices, these scientific visualizations will only increase in their availability and use for K-12 science instruction. But teacher practice is key to the successful learning outcomes for these, and any, educational technology. This study follows eleven science teachers from initial exposure in a PD program through classroom use of scientific data visualizations that address topics in Earth and Space science. The framework of technological pedagogical content knowledge (TPCK) is used to examine key dimensions of teacher knowledge that are activated as they seek to understand the data visualizations and the conceptual models that they represent, select and integrate them into their curriculum, and ultimately use them for instruction. Baseline measures of select dimensions of TPCK are measured for all teachers. Two representative case studies allow for a deep analysis of TPCK in action throughout their professional and instructional experience, and finally the impact on teachers’ knowledge from the experience is examined, with implications for educative curricular material and PD program design.

Baptistella, Bruna Fabiane. January 2015 (has links)
This work investigates writing practices promoted in a Pedagogy course of a Brazilian public university in the context of subjects offered in the curriculum, in the university extension projects (Dean of University Extension - PROEX), the Teaching Core Program projects (Dean of Undergraduate Studies - PROGRAD) in Pibid (Institutional Program of Introduction to Teaching - Capes) and in interviews with students of that course. The overall objective is to investigate the potential of the writing practice in initial teacher education and, specifically, to describe and to discuss the future teachers' writing practices in the course, explaining on how they understand them and how they see their contributions to the teacher training. The sight of students in relation to the writing practice was related to what was described in the Pedagogical Political Project (PPP) of that course and the summary of the subjects. Inspired by the research perspective of thematic oral history, data were produced through semi-structured interviews with seven female students and one male student, who, at the time of the survey, were enrolled from first to fourth year of Pedagogy. Those subjects were chosen according to some criteria: four who are doing the course and four that are doing the course and extension projects, projects of the Teaching Center Program or Pibid. From their statements and the documentary research we could find evidences to think that what is written in the context of initial training involves three areas: official written, marginal written and experiential written. This study makes it possible to discuss the initial teacher training in those formative spaces of the university, as well as reflect on the writing practices as a formative potential, both in the professional sphere as in the personal sphere / Mestre

January 2016 (has links)
(Resumo completo, clicar acesso eletrônico abaixo) / Abstract: We present in this work an analysis of a formative process conducted in a Small Research Group (PGP in Portuguese) at the university-school interface. Our aim was to investigate the process experienced by four teachers of a PGP from the unveiling of their subjectivity and the reconstruction of the history of group in view of intra and interpsychic process and formations highlighted in their speech. Therefore, we used Edmund Husserl's transcendental phenomenology and René Kaës' group psychoanalysis as theoretical and analytical frameworks. In terms of teacher education, we worked with Jose Contreras concepts of autonomy, proletarianization of teacher's work, emphasizing Henry Giroux teacher as transformative intellectual model, which is based on the Critical Theory. Data constitution included phenomenological interviews with four teachers which act in following areas: History, Geography, Science, Chemistry and Mathematics and, Biology, showing part of group's diversity and work that seeks interdisciplinary. We understand the use of phenomenology and group psychoanalysis as a complementarity sense, since first of them contributed to a better understanding of the process experienced individually and the second brought aspects related to inscription and stay of these teachers in an intersubjective situation on influence of psychic processes and formations. The final considerations include reflections on the need of narcissistic investment in each group participant, as well as the... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Doutor
