Rozdíl ve výuce britské a americké angličtiny na na druhém stupni základních škol / Teaching Differences between British and American English in Lower-secondary EFL Classes

Stelzerová, Pavlína January 2014 (has links)
Presented thesis deals with teaching differences between British and American English. Its aim is to suggest a suitable way of teaching selected vocabulary differences between these two English varieties in EFL classes. The theoretical part of the presented thesis summarizes the knowledge background gained by studying relevant researches and professional publications. On that study the author's original teaching materials are based. The practical part consists of a brief research; original materials were used in five EFL classes, and consequently their efficiency and utility was examined. The main goal of this thesis is to propose this topic as a kind of useful enrichment of English lessons and to examine the way it could be included in a lesson plan without affecting it or burdening teachers with an extra preparation. Key words: American English, British English, differences, teaching EFL classes

Teaching EFL to Newly Arrived Adolescents : A Literature Review on EFL Teaching in Multilingual Classrooms

Mörck Jansson, Christine January 2016 (has links)
The Swedish curriculums point out that language is crucial to social interactions, learning and individual development as well as essential to uphold a democratic and multicultural country. However, a recent report from the Swedish National Agency for Education depicts the language introduction programs for immigrant adolescents in Sweden as a school form in great need of development (Skolverket, 2016a). This systematic literature review, which draws on sociocultural theory, contributes to the field of how to teach English to newly arrived adolescents in Sweden. The main findings, gathered from six studies from around the world, suggest several different areas for improvement concerning EFL teaching. A specific pedagogy for EFL learners is suggested as well as targeted professional development for EFL teachers. Additionally, the results point out challenges faced by EFL teachers in multilingual classrooms. Further research could investigate how EFL teachers deal with these challenges. Furthermore, further research could investigate EFL textbooks for multilingual students at upper secondary school in terms of language, culture, identity texts and difficulty level.

The Teaching of english as a foreign language in public schools: new literacies, globalization and citizenship

Mattos, Andréa Machado de Almeida 12 July 2011 (has links)
This research investigated the pedagogic practice of three EFL teachers in public schools, who attended an in-service education course, based on the theories of new literacies, multiliteracies and critical literacy. Some of the specific objectives of this study were to investigate the use of the theories of new literacies, multiliteracies and critical literacy by the teacher in the EFL classroom, to identify, in the practice of the EFL teacher, the pedagogic procedures that reflect local actions in opposition to global actions, and to understand how these actions can influence the teaching/learning process. Finally, another specific aim of the research was to analyze how the teachers pedagogic practice can contribute to the citizenship education of the students involved. The introduction states the general and specific objectives that guided the implementation of this research, its rationale, its premises and the research questions, as well as the researchers locus of enunciation, the methodology, the context and the participants. The four main chapters are concerned with specific issues that support the collection and analysis of the data. Chapter 1 reviews the set of theories that constitute the perspective of the new literacies studies, the main theoretical basis of this research, discussing notions of literacy and literacies, from the traditional view of literacy to the now-classic ideas of the main authors of the new literacies and multiliteracies studies. Chapter 2 introduces the main body of data collected during this research, analyzing and discussing them based on a sociocultural approach to literacy, according to the suggestions of Lankshear, Snyder and Green (2000). Chapter 3 deals with issues related to the recent processes of globalization and its influence on teaching English in Brazil, especially with regard to public school. Chapter 4 debates traditional and contemporary notions of citizenship and its relationship with the teaching of English in regular schools, making reference to the role of English in the education of the student-citizen. The final chapter offers some thoughts about the research that generally refer to all the themes considered and discusses the implications of the research, especially with regard to EFL teachers development and citizenship education.

Video-enhanced Reflection in Iran: Impacts of Gender and Experience

Kavoshian, Saeedeh, Ketabi, Saeed, Tavakoli, Mansoor, Köhler, Thomas January 2017 (has links)
The present study aimed at investigating the video-enhanced reflections of Iranian EFL teachers. It also made an attempt to cast light on the differences between male and female teachers’ video-enhanced self-reflections of their own teaching process. Moreover, the role of experience in changing their video-enhanced reflection was explored. Applying instruments like video-recording, reflection checklists and semi-structured interviews, this study implemented a mixed-method approach with a triangulation design focusing on both quantitative and qualitative data. The findings of the study demonstrate that the video-enhanced reflections of Iranian EFL teachers mostly pivot around issues consisting of innovative teaching strategies, classroom management, learners’ characteristics, classroom interactions, teacher talk, organization of the lessons, technology resources and visual aids. Results also show that the above-mentioned reflections are both experience and gender-sensitive.

Letramento e formação pré-serviço : ensino de inglês no contexto virtual e presencial / Literacy and pre-service trainning : english teaching in the virtual and presencial context

Silva, Jacqueline Ramos da 13 December 2010 (has links)
This study aimed at investigating the contributions of an English Language 2 course so as to develop future English teacher who attended the fourth semester of their English Language undergraduation course. To be more specifically, it aimed at understanding the critical literacy process that the four teachers experienced in the second semester of the 2009 school year. The course on focus intended to combine the advantages and convenience of cyberspace and the English foreign language teaching-learning. To reach the goals, the theoretical underpinning was grounded on Beliefs (BARCELOS, 2004; PITEL 2006; GARBUIO, 2007, GIMENEZ, 2007), English language teaching (PAIVA, 1998; ALMEIDA FILHO, 1998; LEFFA, 2003; NICHOLLS, 2001),teacher development (LEFFA, 2001, 2006) and digital literacy (SOARES, 2002; XAVIER, 2010). The qualitative methodological research approach was based on Symbolic Interactionism (MOREIRA, 2002). The research context was the Federal University of Alagoas and involved 04 teachers in training, the teacher and me as a researcher. This study sought to involve the students to search for new horizons in the foreign language teaching context by making them getting in touch with and becoming aware of the several existing forms of technological resources used in teaching English. In doing so, we promoted their digital literacy. The outcomes revealed that beliefs about teaching and learning process are influenced by context and other external factors. The outcomes also revealed that it is necessary to take into consideration these beliefs in order to promote critical and digital literacy.

ROZVOJ TECHNOLOGICKO-DIDAKTICKÉ ZNALOSTI OBSAHU U UČITELŮ ANGLICKÉHO JAZYKA NA STŘEDNÍCH ŠKOLÁCH / DEVELOPMENT OF TECHNOLOGICAL PEDAGOGICAL AND CONTENT KNOWLEDGE OF HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHERS

CARBOVÁ, Anna January 2017 (has links)
Since the beginning of the new millennium the educational system in the Czech Republic has witnessed a substantial increase in information and communication technology (ICT). It is now available at every school. This brings about the need to educate teachers because it is them on whom the way technology is employed depends. In the theoretical part of the thesis our goal was to find out what the content of such a course should be and how to organize it. In the empirical part of the thesis our goal was to discover the impact of a course on how to integrate ICT into English language teaching. The contribution of this thesis is mapping the current situation in the research area and providing guidelines for teacher education and evaluation of their teaching.
