A case study of adventure education: An ecological analysis

France, Thaddeus J. 01 January 2006 (has links)
Historically, the dominant approach to instruction has been for teachers to break down information and present singular facts and behaviors to receptive students. An instructional environment where the teacher disseminates information portrays the learner as a passive agent in the learning process. Conversely, educational researchers have described a complex ecology when teachers, students and tasks interact to complete academic work (Doyle, 1977, 1983). While much attention has been directed at how teachers and students interact as the learning ecology evolves, less attention has been dedicated to the examination of the interaction between learning tasks or experiences and students (content-embedded accountability) in the evolution of this complex ecology (a program of action). The purpose of this qualitative case study was twofold. First, was to examine the learning ecology created throughout an adventure education unit in the physical education curriculum. Second, was to examine the role of content-embedded accountability in the developing program of action. Participants included Ivana, a 23 year veteran physical education teacher and her physical education class (N=19). Data were collected throughout an adventure education unit (N=8 classes) using qualitative research techniques (e.g. field notes, formal interviews, informal conversations). Data were inductively coded through a method of constant comparison. Multiple processes of open and axial coding were completed to develop major themes and supporting categories. Overall, the strong program of action (PoA) was co-created by Ivana and her students. Structures within the adventure education model provided a framework that allowed the teacher to align content, instruction and assessment and students to focus on their learning to be civil and self-directed. Ivana was influenced by structures in the adventure education (AE) model to (a) bridge the global school initiative for teaching civility with student learning, (b) select activities based on student engagement with relevant content, (c) implement instructional methods that included students' social participation and (d) align assessment with the content and her instructional methods. A significant feature in this ecology was the role of content-embedded accountability, which helped to shape the PoA. Ivana's role as a facilitator and structures in the adventure model for learning tasks held students accountable for their self-directed engagement with the content espoused in the AE model. The structure of content embedded in learning tasks eventually defined how Ivana facilitated student learning. Instructional models such as AE can assist teachers to define content, align instructional methods and create learning tasks that initiate a system of accountability. Future researchers could benefit from considering the connection between a teacher seen as a "technical virtuoso" and the instructional model from which they operate.

Études des stratégies d’apprentissage par projet dans le cadre d’une éducation au développement durable / Studies of learning strategies by project within education for sustainable development / Nghiên cứu các chiến lược học tập của học sinh trong dạy học dự án về giáo dục phát triển bền vững

Tưởng, Duy Hải 03 July 2014 (has links)
The research focuses on student learning strategies in project based learning in context of sustainability education through secondary physics education in Vietnam. The intervention about a learning scenario for the grade-12 student project on solar energy at three different high schools has resulted in five possible learning strategies. In addition, the research outcome shed light on the relation between how the teacher implemented the project design and student achievements as well as how the student struggled with classroom activities and group-based assignments to fulfill their projects. Based on these results, the application of project based learning is suggested to change for more effective student learning and better sustainability education in the school.

Analysis Of Academic Learning Time In Physical Education Classes Of Prospective And In-service Teachers

Yildirim, Ahmet 01 December 2003 (has links) (PDF)
One of the important characteristics of effective teaching is to devote sufficient time to appropriate physical activity in physical education classes. The purpose of this study was to compare teaching effectiveness of prospective and in-service teachers in relation to student behaviors, course content activities and Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) scores. Participants were 26 prospective and 28 in-service physical education teachers. Forty-minute regular lessons (n=54) of each teacher were video recorded in their natural settings and observed with the ALT-PE observational instrument. Learner involvement behaviors, context levels and ALT-PE scores were compared for two groups of teachers. MANOVA results have shown significant differences in student behaviors and course content activities between the groups. While prospective teachers spent significantly more time with management content, in-service teachers spent significantly more time with warm-up activities. Students in the classes of prospective teachers spent significantly more time with off-task and interim behaviors, but students in the classes of in-service teachers spent significantly more time with on task behaviors. The results, however, indicated no significant differences between the groups in motor appropriate behaviors of students. ANOVA results indicated that students spent 17.9% (for prospective teachers), and 18.7% (for in-service teachers) of total class time with ALT-PE behaviors. It seems fair to suggest that prospective and in-service PE teachers should decrease the time on management, transition, waiting, and theoretical explanations, while allocating more time on physical activity.

A Comparative Case Study On School Effectiveness Characteristics Of Two Private High Schools In Ankara

Aksit, F. Tijen 01 February 2006 (has links) (PDF)
This study aimed at exploring the school effectiveness characteristics of two high schools, one with high (School A) and one with low (School B) levels of placement ratio in &Ouml / SS for their graduates, to observe their characteristics as perceived by their stakeholders (students, teachers, parents, school administrative staff and managers). In this study, a comparative pre-structured case study method was employed. The study was conducted in two private high schools in the province of Ankara, Turkey. The participants were 10 students, 10 teachers, 10 parents, 2 non-academic staff and 3 administrators from School A, and 10 students, 10 teachers, 7 parents, 3 non-academic staff and 2 administrators from School B. A framework drawn by the researcher as a result of review of relevant literature was used to conceptualize the study and to guide the interview schedules to collect data. According to this framework, six general areas in effective school literature were explored. These areas were academic emphasis, organization and administration, school climate, home-school relations, teaching staff, and physical and financial resources. The data collected through semi-structured interviews were analyzed using content analysis technique. The findings revealed that two case schools had major differences almost in all areas explored. The only major similarity between two schools was in the leadership and leader qualities under organization and administration area. The effective school characteristics of the school with high levels of placement ratio in &Ouml / SS, in all six areas explored were added to the conceptual framework drawn at the beginning of the study.
