Black student perceptions of predominantly White University of Massachusetts Amherst and their relationship to the CCEBMS Program

Warner, Sean S 01 January 1998 (has links)
This study observes and investigates the relationship between a predominantly White institution of higher education and its African-American student population. It explores how Black students conceptualize the uniqueness of their experience at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in terms of the Committee for the Collegiate Education of Black and other Minority Students (CCEBMS) Program. Three different methodologies were utilized to assess the inquiry. Focus groups, individual interviews, and survey-questionnaires were implemented to gain greater insights into the realities of Black juniors and seniors at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. A total of fourteen--nine women and five men--participated in the focus groups and interviews. The focus groups met twice and took place over a two-week period. Six individuals out of the original fourteen volunteered to be interviewed, so as to look closer at the issues previously raised in the focus group sessions. Lastly, survey-questionnaires were generated based upon the information revealed via the focus group and interview sessions. Over two hundred-fifty surveys were disseminated across campus to African-American juniors and seniors in an effort to weigh their responses against the data previously collected. The qualitative and quantitative instrumentation used examined the attitudes of African-American students towards university practices and whether or not the construction of a culturally-specific programming, otherwise known as the Committee for the Collegiate Education of Black and other Minority Students (CCEBMS), helped shape or modify their opinions. The findings of this study revealed that: (1) Black students in social science courses encounter a highly racialized climate, which expects Black students to represent the entire Black collective; (2) Black students, initially, are frustrated by having to negotiate where they belong and how they're supposed to behave in a racially segregated setting in all contexts that relate to campus life; (3) the Committee for the Collegiate Education of Black and other Minority Students (CCEBMS) Program minimally influences or impacts how African-American collegians interpret their experience at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst; and (4) that many Black students believe that their success relies on their ability to effectively balance the duality of their reality, which requires them to be part-student/part-politician.

"SOCIOLOGIA SERVE PARA QUÊ? As práticas escolares do ensino de Sociologia no Ensino Médio na Instituição de Ensino Olavo Bilac de Santa Maria - RS / " SOCIOLOGY IS FOR WHAT? " The practices of teaching Sociology in High School Education Institution in Instituto Estadual de Educação Olavo Bilac, Santa Maria, RS

Oliveira, Rubia Machado de 17 June 2015 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The purpose of this research is, from the classroom, from what the students were reflecting, answer the question: Sociology serves for what? This question conducted the observations performed with a students group in the high school. This students group was oriented by the teacher Mara Miranda, that was graduated in Social Science in the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The observations were done from August, 2011 to December, 2013, at the State Education Institution Olavo Bilac, Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Beyond the observations with the students group, it was done an interview with undergraduated students of Social Science of the Federal University of Santa Maria, RS, for contribute for the discussion about the docente formation in Social Science. The main aim of this research was, from the reasoning of students of high school and of the teacher explanations, answer the question: Sociology serves for what in the high school? Although this is a research that can be inserted in the Anthropology Education area, in which it held at ethnography of scholar practice of sociology teaching, the same is intensively linked to the education questions and because of this reason the evaluations are very next of the educational sphere. It was concluded, therefore, that the Sociology subject in the high school serves to deconstruct the reasoning pre-established by the students, as it put the students in constant exercise of reflection and interpretation and with that contribute for the development of more tolerant people. It happens because the students start to understand that thinking different, and behaving differently, is the reflex of the context which the another is inserted and consequently they start evaluate more carefully their ponderations in order to, rather than judge, accomplish critical reflections and reflexives.

The history of the teaching of Sociology in Brazil is characterized both by the presence and absence of that discipline as a mandatory course in secondary, higher, and normal school. Although it was part of the curriculum in the three levels of education for a long time, its development in normal school is still little researched. Thus, one of the general goals of this investigation is to contribute to the historical studies on the institutionalization of Sociology in Brazil, more specifically in the scenery of São José’s normal school in Pelotas, between 1946 and 1971, when its teaching was mandatory. It is important to clarify which teachers, programs, contents, tests, examinations, and course books were then used in order to understand the purpose of this course in that Catholic educational institution. The theoretical framework falls within the field of History of School Subjects and aims to engage in Pierre Bourdieu’s concepts. The sources examined consist of a series of documents referring to the school archives and four course books on Sociology written by Fernando de Azevedo and Amaral Fontoura. The research method used was therefore the documentary analysis, along with an extensive literature review. The main findings show that the teaching of Educational Sociology in the normal school analyzed was associated with the theoretical principles of Christian Sociology, whose thoughts relate to the ideals of the Catholic Church in Brazil. Consequently, there was a significant production of Sociology course books inspired by that current of thoughts, largely represented by Alceu Amoroso Lima and later by Amaral Fontoura.

Formação do professor de sociologia do ensino médio: um estudo sobre o currículo do curso de ciências sociais da Universidade de São Paulo / Formation of the sociology teacher of high school: a study on the curriculum of the course of social sciences of the University of São Paulo.

Takagi, Cassiana Tiemi Tedesco 06 May 2013 (has links)
This work was initiated as a continuation to the studies about teaching Sociology in high school, the subject studied in the Master thesis research. Therefore, in order to know the conception on formation of the Sociology teacher in high school and the changes along the time, it was chosen to study the curriculum of the courses of bachelors degree and licentiates degree in Social Sciences at the University of São Paulo, since its foundation to the present days. It was considered that the licentiate course of USP, which is the most long lasting and in some way inaugural, would be able to provide, from its archives, the subsidies that are necessary to the comprehension of the curricular objectives of teacher education formation. For such, it was selected, as research sources, the yearbooks, guides, internal processes and minutes of the Graduation Committee from both the Faculty of Education and the Faculty of Philosophy, Languages and Human Sciences. We made use of the works of authors such as Goodson, Popkewitz, Apple and other thematizers of curricular theories, in order to define and characterize the curriculum as an object of study.

Dias, Wilian Marques January 2020 (has links)
Qualitative research was carried out, using books, textbooks, and scientific articles as sources, as we understand that these are essential elements for understanding the emergence of the theme in contemporary society. We sought to identify the need for sociology teaching and its historical context in order to understand its importance as a "refined instrument of human culture" that has the specificity of analyzing the movement that constitute the social fabric and to base an analysis of two widely used textbooks used in classrooms with regard to the world of work, its transformations and its impact on the subject who works. The research found that the presence of sociology in the curricula has a history of intermittences, which is sometimes present and others absent, but it ought to act as an element of development offering the possibility of sociological imagination (MILLS, 1969) in response to the simplicity of the pseudo-concrete discourses (KOSIK, 1995) that populate common discourse in an attempt to understand the flexibilization movement in the world of labor (ANTUNES, 2000) and its relationship with the emergence of defensive ideologies (DEJOURS, 1992) against illness. However, textbooks reflect little on th... (Complete abstract click electronic access below) / Mestre
