Managerial Style and the Use of Statistical Data in Techincal Services Units in Selected Academic Libraries

The primary purpose of this study was to test the following hypothesis: The internal use (use within the technical services unit for decision making and planning) of statistical data will be significantly higher for managers scoring in the Sensing-Thinking (ST) scale of the self-assessment instrument Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. A Technical Services Statistics Survey Form was developed in order to collect statistical data from the technical services managers participating in the study. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator was utilized to record managers' personal management style. Thirty-two managers participated in the two-part study. The hypothesis of the study was not supported because no significant differences in the predicted direction were found to exist between the use of the technical services statistics and management style groups as measured by the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. (A Mann-Whitney U Test was used due to the small, uneven sample size.) There were significant differences between Sensing-Thinking (ST) and Intuitive-Feeling (NF) types, but not in the direction predicted by the hypothesis. Possible explanations for this unexpected finding include the very small sample size, the larger percentage of male respondents in the NF type, and the larger percentage of respondents from smaller institutions in the NF type. (Gender and institutional size were not analyzed in this study.) A sharp contrast existed in the number and guality of comments provided by Sensing-Thinking (ST) and Intuitive-Thinking (NT) types, both of whom tended to write lengthy detailed comments elaborating on each statistic. Sensing-Feeling (SF) and Intuitive-Feeling (NF) types provided little or no comment on the Technical Services Statistics Form. The results of this research have implications for examining the technical services statistics collected in technical services units: the frequency of analysis; their importance for planning; the use of these statistics; and the level at which the statistic is used for decision making. Other implications pertain to the automation of statistical data and the use or non-use of the automated reports available.

Two Libraries, One Plan: Combining and Refining Technical Services Across Two Campuses

Conference proceeding from the Living the Future 6 Conference, April 5-8, 2006, University of Arizona Libraries, Tucson, AZ. / The Libraries of Kenyon College and Denison University, supported by a Mellon Foundation grant, have collaboratively redesigned and merged their technical services departments into one combined unit, through the creation of a joint department of Collection Services. As members of the Five Colleges of Ohio and OhioLINK consortia, both libraries have a long standing history of cooperation. This venture, however, takes cooperation to a new level of collaboration by merging one department within two distinct libraries, geographically separated on two campuses. This presentation will be geared towards providing valuable insight to other libraries who might be considering new ventures in collaboration and work redesign. Key elements of this unique plan will be highlighted, such as staff empowerment and redefined workflows, while the focus of the presentation will be on the process undertaken in planning and implementing the redesign project. Recognizing that successful reorganization at this level is not a given, the presenters will include a frank discussion of both the keys to success, as well as those things that have been bumps in the road, so that others may anticipate both the challenges and rewards of rethinking the role of technical services within our libraries.

El presente trabajo de investigación tiene por objeto la creación de una plataforma virtual útil para conectar a técnicos y clientes que deseen satisfacer una necesidad técnica a domicilio en el menor tiempo posible. Además, mediante la plataforma virtual se garantizará la seguridad y calidad de los servicios a ofrecer, ya que la selección de técnicos será minuciosa para realizar dicho contacto. En suma, para rectificar nuestro servicio de calidad, se realizará una supervisión del servicio realizado, con el objeto de realizar mejoras y ofrecer beneficios a los clientes, en caso que el cliente no esté a gusto con el servicio ofrecido. La idea de negocio surge a consecuencia de una necesidad frecuente como reparar objetos domésticos y, ello se dificulta ante el requerimiento de un experto con experiencia y que, a su vez, éste sea confiable. Añadido a esto, contratan a trabajadores informales que proliferan sus capacidades técnicas en lugares peligrosos, pero que forman parte de su marketing personal. En los primeros apartados, se apreciará los aspectos más importantes y relevantes para el entendimiento del proyecto como es el caso del modelo del negocio, sus validaciones, estudios de mercado, entre otros puntos. En el presente documento se analiza la viabilidad y escalabilidad del negocio y se desarrollara la proyección de ventas a partir del plan concierge de TEC, asimismo, la planeación estratégica, los planes entre ellos el operativo, de marketing y financiero, definidos así por áreas. Posteriormente, se presenta un análisis cuantitativo y cualitativo de dichos planes mediante los estados financieros. Por último, se desarrolla un breve resumen de lo más importante por medio de conclusiones. / The purpose of this research work is to create a useful virtual platform to connect technicians and clients who wish to satisfy a technical need at home in the shortest possible time. In addition, the virtual platform will guarantee the safety and quality of the services to be offered, since the selection of technicians will be meticulous to make such contact. In short, to rectify our quality service, a supervision of the service performed will be carried out, in order to make improvements and offer benefits to customers, in case the customer is not comfortable with the service offered. The business idea arises as a result of a frequent need such as repairing household objects and this is hindered by the requirement of an experienced expert who, in turn, is reliable. Added to this, they hire informal workers who proliferate their technical skills in dangerous places, but who are part of their personal marketing. In the first sections, the most important and relevant aspects for understanding the project will be appreciated, such as the business model, its validations, market studies, among other points. This document analyzes the viability and scalability of the business and will develop the sales projection based on TEC's concierge plan, as well as strategic planning, including operational, marketing and financial plans, defined by area. Subsequently, a quantitative and qualitative analysis of these plans is presented through the financial statements. This diploma thesis deals with questions about property of municipality and organizations established by municipality. It was identified a number of problems. The aim of this thesis is provided by information important for the choice of acceptable form of organization of particular activities. As soon as this problem is solved another property contexture could be consider. The thesis is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part contains important information about the property of municipality. There are mentioned essential types of organizations which could be established by municipality within the law. Last but not least there is a table summarizing the most important properties of particular form of organization. The practical part is based on the theoretical one and it includes research performed on nine technical services established by municipality. The conclusion of this thesis is focused on the SWOT analysis in which the main characteristic of individual form of organization is mentioned.

This dissertation deals with the design of the object designated as a technical service center in the town Ivančice. According to the requirements of the client the object contains the following sections: facilities for 25 people, electricians room with the storeroom, premises for the manager, the accountant and the field worker, necessary sanitary facilities, material storeroom, workshop and garages. The building is wheelchair accessible. The main vertical load-bearing constructions are built from brick blocks, the ceiling construction is monolithic reinforced concrete, the load-bearing construction of the roof is made up of wooden rafters. Workshop, garages and warehouses are located in the adjoining steel assembled hall which is sheathed in polyurethane panels.

Use of Stufflebeam's CIPP Model to Assess a Change Effort in a Division of a University Library

Reorganization efforts within colleges and universities are increasingly considered as institutions look for ways to streamline operations for financial cost savings or competitive advantage. The purpose of this study was to assess a particular change effort in a university library which took place between August, 1996 and July, 1997. A team was formed to manage the change effort, and an outside consultant was hired to facilitate the process and guide the team. Stufflebeam's evaluation model was used as a conceptual framework to evaluate the entire process which included a particular change management model brought in by the consultant. The entire change effort was described by the author as a participating member of the team and assessed by gathering feedback from team members, library staff members affected by the effort, and members of the library administration.

The use of radio frequency identification self-help circulation services for the delivery of user services at the University of South Africa library services

This study investigated the factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages that influence the use of radio frequency identification (RFID) self-help circulation services for service delivery by South African academic libraries with specific emphasis on the University of South Africa (Unisa) Library. Unisa Library Services is the only library service in South Africa that has implemented a fully-fledged RFID self-help circulation service. There must therefore be reasons why other libraries in South Africa have not implemented this type of service. Accordingly, a need was identified to investigate the aspects that should be considered before a library decides to implement such a circulation service. There was also a need to identify the factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages that influence the use of RFID self-help circulation services. The study gives a brief overview of RFID technology and its use in libraries internationally with specific emphasis on its use for self-help circulation purposes. Through a literature study, certain factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages that influence the use of RFID self-help circulation services were identified. The identified factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages were subsequently used to compile questionnaires to obtain information from Unisa library users (students and staff). Only Unisa staff and students who were situated close to Unisa campuses with RFID self-help circulation services were included in the study. During the analysis of the data collected additional factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages were identified. Recommendations were compiled regarding the factors, best practice, advantages and disadvantages that influence the use of RFID self-help circulation services. These recommendations are meant as a guide for South African libraries when making decisions on the possible implementation and use of RFID self-help circulation services. / Information Science / M.A. (Information Science)

Une résistance initiée par des officiers des Transmissions au coeur même des institutions de l’Etat français, consistant à communiquer secrètement du renseignement militaire aux Forces alliées. Cette résistance latente débouche, après novembre 1942, sur une résistance active par la formation d’un réseau clandestin, le Service des transmissions nationales (STN), sous l’égide de NAP-PTT, puis sur son intégration, en octobre 1943, sous le nom de « Groupe Romon », au réseau Alliance, ainsi que sur l’entrée de nombreux opérateurs radio du GCR dans divers autres réseaux de résistance.Le cas d’une résistance intérieure, qui a contribué efficacement à la victoire finale des Forces alliées, malgré une répression systématique et féroce de l’occupant. / A specific and hardly known way of resistance: the continuation of the fight against the german invader led within the technical services of Transmissions of French army, especially the Groupement des contrôles radioélectriques (GCR), the Radio control Group, immediatly after the armistice of June 1940 and carried on until the final victory. A resistance at the initiative of Transmission officers, which, at the heart of the institutions of the Etat français, French State, have secretly communicated military intelligence to the allied Forces. This latent resistance leads, after november 1942, up to an active resistance by the implementation of a clandestine network, the Service des transmissions nationales (STN), the National Transmissions Service, under the aegis of NAP-PTT, then to its integration, in october 1943, under the name « Groupe Romon », to the resistance network Alliance, as well as the commitment of numerous GCR transmitters in various other resistance networks.The case of a resistance from the inside which has effectively contributed to the final victory of the Allied, despite a systematic and ferocious repression from the occupant.

Akviziční strategie cizojazyčné literatury ve veřejných knihovnách: srovnávací studie / The acquisition strategy of foreign-language books in public libraries: A comparative study

Public libraries are facing a great challenge to succeed in serving their increasingly diverse communities. This thesis focuses on the acquisition of foreign-language books in public libraries and attempts to address the question whether libraries have special strategies to select and acquire foreign-language books. Particular attention is paid to fiction, the main genre offered by public libraries. To help answer the thesis question, the author compares the acquisition strategies of the Municipal Library of Prague and the Zentral- und Landesbibliothek Berlin using structured interviews with the key persons responsible for the acquisition of foreign-language books. As a background, the author provides a literature review of foreign-language materials in public libraries and specifically, the acquisition strategy for those materials (i.e. including case studies, research projects and trends from the Czech Republic, the US, Canada, Australia, Sweden, Denmark and Netherlands). This knowledge foundation is considered in the comparison of the two libraries and their acquisition strategies. The comparative study confirms the trends highlighted in the literature review, such as outsourcing, approval plans and gifts as common ways of acquiring foreign- language literature.
