Integration of digital technology in the film industry of Bangladesh : readiness and response functions

Ahsan, Muhammad Shajjad January 2012 (has links)
The objective of this study is to understand how the integration of digital technology (DT) in the Bangladesh Film industry has been responded to by its production, distribution and exhibition related organisations. Since no research on digital integration has been considered in a developing country context, and specifically within the area of concentrating on the industry rather than the films themselves, this research therefore addresses the gaps within the knowledge field. The Bangladesh Film Industry (BFI) used to be a centre for film production, distribution and exhibition, but this traditional industry has been in decline for decades. In response to the decline, the government started an integration process of DT in 2003, yet eight years after the launch only a fraction of the project has been completed. Apart from its partial adoption in the film production sector, distribution and exhibition have appeared to resist the adoption of new technology. This thesis therefore sets out to explore the causes of partial integration of DT in the film industry in Bangladesh through a study of the workforce, business owners, practitioners, scholars, government officials and executives functioning in and outside the industry. With the mixed method approach and emphasis on qualitative engagement (two case studies and 38 interviews), this thesis explores current attitudes and beliefs and identifies potential barriers to effective integration. In particular this dissertation examines five areas: technology integration, training for workforce development, production, distribution and exhibition capabilities, and argues that the political factor was the most important driver in integrating DT, while knowledge integration, training, and development of digital production, distribution and exhibition compatibility at individual and organisational levels were ignored. Moreover, the greatest concern of losing a job or business within the industry community due to inadequate knowledge, skills and finance is impeding the possibility of full completion of the integration process within the industry. Overall, two important contributions of this research include 1) an exploration of factors that impeded progress of the film industry in responding to the DT and 2) a formulation of some suitable recommendations to overcome the challenges in order to completely realise the integration of DT within the Bangladesh Film Industry. However, further research is recommended to investigate whether completion of the integration process will save the industry from decline or not.

Technologie výroby zápustky / Technology production of die

Kubášek, Pavel January 2013 (has links)
The aim of the master´s thesis is to adjust the technology of machining of a die on the CNC lathe so that the total time for the production of a die could be reduced significantly and in this way also the production costs. The analyse of the technology of the machining of the inner part of the die is carried out and a change in the machining of this part is suggested. The new technology is elaborated in two variants when the CAD/CAM system is used for the creation of a programme in a variant and the machining cycles in the other. The technical and economical evaluation is performed at the end of the thesis.

Weiß, Corinna 20 December 2019 (has links)
Improving instruments : equatoria, astrolabes, and the practices of monastic astronomy in late medieval England

Falk, Seb January 2016 (has links)
Histories of medieval astronomy have brought to light a rich textual tradition, of treatises and tables composed and computed, transmitted and translated across Europe and beyond. These have been supplemented by fruitful inquiry into the material culture of astronomy, especially the instruments that served as models of the heavens, for teaching and for practical purposes. But even now we know little about the practices of medieval astronomers: how they obtained and passed on their knowledge; how they drew up and used mathematical tables; how they drafted the treatises in which they found words to express their ideas and inventions for their particular audiences. This thesis uses a case study approach to elucidate these medieval astronomical practices. Long thought to be a holograph manuscript in the hand of Geoffrey Chaucer, the Equatorie of the Planetis (Peterhouse, Cambridge MS 75.I) has recently been identified as the work of John Westwyk (d. c. 1400), a Benedictine monk of Tynemouth Priory and St Albans Abbey. His draft description of the construction and use of an astronomical instrument, with accompanying tables, provides an opportunity to reconstruct the practices of an unexceptional astronomer. The first chapter of this thesis reconstructs Westwyk’s astronomical reading and understanding, through an examination of the other manuscript that survives in his hand: a pair of instrument treatises by the outstanding monastic astronomer Richard of Wallingford. I show how Westwyk copied this manuscript in a monastic context, learning as he annotated texts and recomputed tables. In the second chapter I discuss the purposes of planetary instruments such as equatoria, their place among other astronomical instruments, and the physical constraints and possibilities experienced by their makers. Through this discussion I assess the craft environment in which Westwyk came to write his own instrument-making instructions. Chapters three and four assess Westwyk’s language, explaining the basis for his choice to write a technical work in the vernacular, and analysing how his innovative use of Middle English furthered his didactic objectives. In the final chapter, I undertake a technical reassessment of the Equatorie treatise, an integrated analysis of the instrument with the somewhat neglected tables that Westwyk compiled alongside it. The thesis thus applies a range of methodologies to examine the practices and products of a single inexpert astronomer from all angles. It aims to show what an in-depth case study approach can offer historians of the medieval sciences.

An integrated model of the influence of personal psychological traits and cognitive beliefs on customer satisfaction and continuance intentions in relation to Internet banking usage within the Saudi Arabian context

Alghamdi, Ahmed Dirwish G. January 2014 (has links)
This thesis examines the effects of Culture, the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), Expectation Confirmation Theory (ECT) and Technology Readiness (TR) on the satisfaction and usage continuance intention of Internet banking customers within the Saudi Arabian context. The aim is to develop and test a new framework for use in determining the factors that affect Internet banking customers’ actual usage behaviours, with a special focus on the role of cognitive processes, and cultural and personal psychological traits. This research uses cross-sectional survey questionnaire methods within a quantitative approach. 261 valid responses were received. Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was used to test the hypothesised relationships within the research model in Analysis of Moment Structures (AMOS 20) software. ECT is well established in conventional marketing literature and explains how cognitive beliefs and affects lead to customers’ repurchasing behaviour. It was first adopted for the Information Systems (IS) context and then customised to explain IS continuance intention behaviour. However, previous ECT customisations in the IS context present a significant knowledge gap because technology-based services are sensitive to individuals’ psychological traits, which ECT does not account for. This research integrates psychological traits and culture into the ECT framework to explain customer satisfaction and continuance intentions in the context of Internet banking usage. It combines ECT with the UTAUT in order to expand ECT to include more cognitive beliefs. Then it integrates TR and Culture to account for psychological and sociological traits. The results present a new contribution to the body of knowledge by validating a theoretically backed integration of the above models into one structural model. This model broadens the understanding of the factors that influence IS satisfaction and usage continuance intention. Compared to previous studies, the explanatory power of this model is a major improvement, with an R2 of (0.61) for usage continuance intention.

Computational studies of protein helix kinks

Wilman, Henry R. January 2014 (has links)
Kinks are functionally important structural features found in the alpha-helices of many proteins, particularly membrane proteins. Structurally, they are points at which a helix abruptly changes direction. Previous kink definition and identification methods often disagree with one another. Here I describe three novel methods to characterise kinks, which improve on existing approaches. First, Kink Finder, a computational method that consistently locates kinks and estimates the error in the kink angle. Second the B statistic, a statistically robust method for identifying kinks. Third, Alpha Helices Assessed by Humans, a crowdsourcing approach that provided a gold-standard data set on which to train and compare existing kink identification methods. In this thesis, I show that kinks are a feature of long -helices in both soluble and membrane proteins, rather than just transmembrane -helices. Characteristics of kinks in the two types of proteins are similar, with Proline being the dominant feature in both types of protein. In soluble proteins, kinked helices also have a clear structural preference in that they typically point into the solvent. I also explored the conservation of kinks in homologous proteins. I found examples of conserved and non-conserved kinks in both the helix pairs and the helix families. Helix pairs with non-conserved kinks generally have less similar sequences than helix pairs with conserved kinks. I identified helix families that show highly conserved kinks, and families that contain non-conserved kinks, suggesting that some kinks may be flexible points in protein structures.
