The impact of usability on clinician acceptance of a health information system

Croll, Jasmine January 2009 (has links)
The two longitudinal case studies that make up this dissertation sought to explain and predict the relationship between usability and clinician acceptance of a health information system. The overall aim of the research study was to determine what role usability plays in the acceptance or rejection of systems used by clinicians in a healthcare context. The focus was on the end users (the clinicians) rather than the views of the system designers and managers responsible for implementation and the clients of the clinicians. A mixed methods approach was adopted that drew on both qualitative and quantitative research methods. This study followed the implementation of a community health information system from early beginnings to its established practice. Users were drawn from different health service departments with distinctly different organisational cultures and attitudes to information and communication technology used in this context. This study provided evidence that a usability analysis in this context would not necessarily be valid when the users have prior reservations on acceptance. Investigation was made on the initial training and post-implementation support together with a study on the nature of the clinicians to determine factors that may influence their attitude. This research identified that acceptance of a system is not necessarily a measure of its quality, capability and usability, is influenced by the user’s attitude which is determined by outside factors, and the nature and quality of training. The need to recognise the limitations of the current methodologies for analysing usability and acceptance was explored to lay the foundations for further research.

The monitoring of environmental risks through the use of processes of Information Technology (IT) helps in making decisions, which assists in the proper prevention and destination of the liquid or solid waste. The focus of this research is in the monitoring of environmental risks through IT processes, by a single case study, which, in turn, was made through a qualitative approach, phenomenological paradigm of applied nature. One has used five instruments in the data collect and analysis: Environmental Risk Matrix, Matrix of Governance Arrangements of IT, Interview with questions on the continuation of Environmental Risk Matrix, COBIT Questionnaire, and Documental Retrieval. The results of the research have indicated that the levels of maturity of IT processes correspond to: 4 in level 2 (repetitive), 11 in level 3 (defined), and 19 in level 4 (managed) observed in primary information criteria of COBIT, and one identified that the monitoring of environmental risk (filter cake, ashes, bagasse and vinasse) is low. The TI AI 7 process presented maturity level in the monitoring of environmental risks, for demonstrated the system quality through formalized procedures, organized into test environments, its importance is high and efficient in COBIT’s primary criteria. This process manages, installs and certifies changing solutions in response to needs of the business area. The vinasse showed the higher probability of causing environmental risk; the decision-making rights are shown by the leaders of the business unities. The waste: filter cake and ashes meet legal requirements for obtaining operation license envisaged in CONAMA/237/2007 Resolution and Decree 7007/2006, the remaining waste (vinasse and bagasse) are constraints to this requirement.

E-government adoption process : XBRL adoption in HM revenue and customs and companies house

Mousa, Rania January 2011 (has links)
The last two decades have seen an evolution of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilities in the public sector which facilitates the adoption of several IT innovations. Electronic government is one of these strategic innovations that many government agencies have considered adopting to deliver government information and services and support the modernisation of government’s administrative tasks. This research investigates an e-government adoption process as represented by the Extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) adoption process. XBRL constitutes one of the key components of the electronic regulatory reporting process in HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) and Companies House (CH). A comprehensive conceptual framework is developed to examine XBRL adoption process and the influential technological, organisational, environmental factors and e-government challenges that affect this process. The contribution of this comprehensive framework is that it develops various relationships among these factors, challenges and stages of the adoption process which have not been identified in the IT adoption or e-government literature. The framework for e-government adoption in the public sector is useful in multiple ways. The major benefit is to contribute to understanding the adoption process, identify the technological infrastructure, and emphasise the importance of the organisational readiness and impact of the environment on the adoption process. The framework can also help government decision makers to visualise a suitable strategic action plan for the future of electronic government by identifying the key issues and potential challenges associated with adopting e-government projects.

Application of mobile IT in construction

Bowden, Sarah L. January 2005 (has links)
In recent years, the construction industry has been compelled to explore all possible options for improving the delivery of their products and services. Clients are now expecting a better service and projects that meet their requirements more closely. This has challenged the industry to become more efficient, integrated and more attractive, with benefits for its potential workforce and for society as a whole. Information and communication technologies (ICT) are an enabler to facilitate the improvements required for modernisation. However, due to the geographically dispersed and nomadic nature of the construction industry's workforce, many people are prevented from efficiently and effectively using the ICT tools adopted to date. Mobile technologies providing the 'last mile' connection to the point-of activity could be the missing link to help address the ongoing drive for process improvement. Although this has been a well-researched area, several barriers to mainstream adoption still exist: including a perceived lack of suitable devices; a perceived lack of computer literacy; and the perceived high cost. Through extensive industry involvement, this research has taken the theoretical idea that mobile IT use in the construction industry would be beneficial, a step further; demonstrating by means of a state of the art assessment, usability trials, case studies and demonstration projects that the barriers to mainstream adoption can be overcome. The findings of this work have been presented in four peer-reviewed papers. An ongoing dissemination programme is expected to encourage further adoption.

BIBLIOTECA DIGITAL: UMA PROPOSTA PARA PUBLICAÇÃO E DISSEMINAÇÃO DO CONHECIMENTO PRODUZIDO ATRAVÉS DAS TESES E DISSERTAÇÕES / (DIGITAL LIBRARY: A PROPOSAL FOR PUBLICATION AND DISSEMINATION OF THE KNOWLEDGE PRODUCED THROUGH THESES AND DISSERTATIONS

Gubiani, Juçara Salete 14 July 2005 (has links)
With the coming of the World Wide Web (Web), there has been a great change in the form of communication between the people and the organizations. The link among documents that can be situated in any place on the computer network, through the Internet and the concept of Universal Resource Locator, made the fast recovery of information possible, before materialized in environments of restricted access. Publishing on Internet has become a simple task, however it was necessary to search for quality in publications and an only vestibule of access and search of excellent information. Proposals with standards for publication have appeared propitiating the interoperabilidade of information. In this context we have the digital libraries offering conditions to make a great net of data and knowledge. This work has the aim to analyze technologies for publication on the Web and to suggest a proposal to publish the knowledge produced through the Theses and Dissertation of the Programs of Pos-Graduation of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM), as well as measuring the acceptability in the academic community of the new form of spreading and dissemination of the knowledge. The proposal tool must use standards and technologies that offer total integration with the other libraries in the country and be part of the project of the Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations (BDTD), as well as being linked with the Digital Networked Library of Theses and Dissertations of Virginia Tech University. After analysis of technologies, publication protocols and the view of the academic community, the system TEDE developed by the Institute of Science and Technology (IBICT), was considered as solution for publication. It was chosen because it incorporates technologies with protocols capable to collect and to make the transference of information possible being guaranteed the necessary interoperabilidade among libraries and for consequence the dissemination of the knowledge produced by the programs of pos-graduation through the publication of the theses and dissertations on the Web.

The study uses the conceptual research model proposed by Tian et al. (2009). As part of this study, some of the main theoretical concepts of Resource Based View are reviewed, establishing a link between these concepts and the explanation about competitive advantage. The three constructs that set up the IT Deployment Capabilities are identified and investigated: Strategic Flexibility Partnership Business and Business Alignment. This is a descriptive exploratory research with a quantitative approach. The data collection instrument answered by the employees was a survey with a 7-point Likert scale available through Electronic Link on the Internet, using the website Survey Monkey. The study used public or private companies, national or international companies headquartered in Brazil as criteria for population, within various segments, and sample included the following functions: CEOs and Directors, Managers and Coordinators working at Information Technology areas in their companies. 320 e-mails were sent, yielding 192 responses. Of these 108 were selected as surveys with the desired research profile. To provide validation to the study, a statistical tool validation was used performing exploratory factor analysis tests (FAT) and multiple linear regression (MLR). The results showed that the constructs Strategic Flexibility and Business Partnership are positively associated with the perception of the impact of information technology competitive advantage, while the construct Business Alignment had no significant results to corroborate the studies by Tian et al. (2009) in Chinese companies.
