A new Propagation Model for Industrial Environments

<p>This thesis is a project carried out at the “Centre for RF measurements Technology“at the University of Gävle. The first aim was basically the characterization of different industrial indoor environments to get a model that describes dispersive features of each environment.</p><p> </p><p>The results of previous measurements campaign on three industrial environments as steel mill, storage paper and industrial process mill are used. Also new Power Delay Profile (PDP) on corridor and laboratory has been developed.</p><p> </p><p>Measurements for three frequency bands are done (183-683 MHz, 1640-2140MHz and 2200-2700MHz) and for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) industrial and laboratory scenaries cases are presented.</p><p> </p><p>All these models have been compared with other existing models as Saleh-Valenzuela Model, Two Cluster Model and Indoor Power Delay Profile Model (IPDP Model) and fit-line, typical deviation are shown.</p><p> </p><p>Finally we present a study of the different systems used in the industry and the best suited system to the conditions is chosen.</p><p><strong> </strong></p>

Design of Microstrip Patch Antenna on Liquid Crystal Polymer (LCP) for Applications at 70GHz

<p>The demand of small size electronic systems has been increasing for several decades. The physical size of systems is reduced due to advancements in integrated circuits. With reduction in size of electronic systems, there is also an increasing demand of small and low cost antennas. Patch antennas are one of the most attractive antennas for integrated RF front end systems due to their compatibility with microwave integrated circuits. To fulfil the demand of integrated RF front end systems, a design of microstrip patch antenna with optimum performance at 70GHz is investigated. The procedure could be extended to design other planar antennas that act in a similar way.</p><p>In this work, three different design methods to design patch antennas for applications at 70GHz are investigated that include use of analytical models, numerical optimization, and numerical variation of dimensions. Analytical models provide a basic understanding of the operation of a patch antenna and they also provide approximate dimensions of a patch antenna for a targeted frequency without using numerical simulations. However, as the operating frequencies of RF systems reach mm-wave frequencies, we expect that the accuracy of analytical models become less accurate. For example, the excitation of substrate modes and effect of ground size are not predicted in simple analytical models.</p><p>Due to these expected limitations of the analytical design methods, the accuracy of these models is investigated by numerical electromagnetic field simulations. In this work, CST Microwave Studio Transient Solver is used for that purpose. In order to make sure that the appropriate settings of the solver are applied, the simulation settings such as mesh density, boundary conditions and the port dimensions are investigated. The simulation settings may affect computation time and convergence of the results. Here, in this work, the accuracy of the simulator for a specific design of inset feed rectangular patch antenna is verified. The patch dimensions obtained from analytical calculations are optimized at 70GHz by using the optimizer of the transient solver. The patch dimensions obtained from optimizer are verified by varying the patch dimensions in equidistant steps around the found result of the optimizer.</p><p>In a rectangular microstrip patch antenna design, the use of a width of 1.5 times the length is an approximate rule of thumb [1] for low dielectric constant substrates. It is also investigated how the performance properties of a microstrip patch antenna are affected by varying the width to length ratio of the patch. There are occasions where a different ratio is required because of space limitations, or to change the input impedance. The patch designs having various width to length ratios were optimized with the feed location.</p><p>The analytically calculated dimensions provided good initial values of the rectangular patch antenna for further optimization using more accurate techniques. The design have been optimized at 70GHz for the investigated mesh density, boundary conditions and the port dimensions. The numerical variation of dimensions is found to be most reliable among the investigated design methods but it is more complicated with many parameters.</p>

Kinas nya institutionella kontext : Hur påverkas svenska telekombolag och dess underleverantörer?

<p>Denna uppsats syftar till att redogöra för den institutionella utveckling som skett i Kina under mellan år 2002-2008 och ta reda på hur svenska företag inom telekombranschen påverkas av den nya institutionella kontexten. För att undersöka Kinas ekonomiska, politiska och sociala institutionella utveckling och se effekterna hos svenska företag gjordes en statistisk jämförelse av institutionella faktorer mellan åren 2002 och 2008 samt företagsintervjuer med tre svenska företag i Shanghai under februari 2009. Resultatet visar att det blivit avsevärt dyrare för utländska företag att verka i Kina som resultat av många institutionella förändringar som skett de senaste åren, bl.a. har många incitament för utländska bolag slopats och marknaden är nu mer rättvis mellan utländska och inhemska företag. Undersökningen visar även på en fortsatt långsam utveckling av politiska och sociala faktorer såsom korruption, patentskydd och byråkratisk kvalitet. Dessa förändringar kompenseras dock alltjämt av en enorm ekonomisk tillväxt som driver på efterfrågan av produkter.  Slutsatsen är att svenska företag som arbetar inom telekombranschen är etablerade i Kina pga. den stora inhemska efterfrågan snarare än i jakt på billig tillverkning. Trots de högre kostnader som drabbar företag och en institutionell kontext som allt mer liknar länder i väst, accepteras dessa nya förutsättningar för att få ta del av Kinas enorma marknad.</p>

Slovak Telecom administration : transformation and regulation in a dynamic market

This study is analysing the transformation of Slovak administration in the telecommunication sector between 1989 and 2004. The dynamic telecom sector forms a good example for the transition problems of post-socialist administration with special regard to the regulation regime change. After describing briefly the role of the telecom sector within economy, the Slovak sectoral policy is analysed. The focus is layed on telecom legislation (including the regulation framework), liberalization of the telecom market and privatisation of the former state owned telecom operator. The transformation of the organizational structure of the "Slovak telecommunication administration" is analysed in particular at the level of the ministry and the regulating agency.

Communication and Networking Techniques for Traffic Safety Systems

Accident statistics indicate that every year a significant number of casualties and extensive property losses occur due to traffic accidents. Consequently, efforts are directed towards developing passive and active safety systems that help reduce the severity of crashes, or prevent vehicles from colliding with one another. To develop these systems, technologies such as sensor systems, computer vision and vehicular communication have been proposed. Safety vehicular communication is defined as the exchange of data between vehicles with the goal of providing in-vehicle safety systems with enough information to permit detection of traffic dangers. Inter-vehicle communication is a key safety technology, especially as a complement to other technologies such as radar, as the information it provides cannot be gathered in any other way. However, due to the specifics of the traffic environment, the design of efficient safety communication systems poses a series of major technical challenges. In this thesis we focus on the design and development of a safety communication system that provides support for active safety systems such as collision warning and collision avoidance. We begin by providing a method for designing the support system for active safety systems. Within our study, we investigate different safety aspects of traffic situations. For performing traffic investigations, we have developed ECAM, a temporal reasoning system for modeling and analyzing accident scenarios. Next, we focus on the communication system design. We investigate approaches that can be applied to implement safety vehicular communication, as well as design aspects of such systems, including networking techniques and transmission procedures. We then propose a new solution for vehicular communication in the form of a distributed communication protocol that allows the vehicles to organize themselves in virtual clusters according to their common interest in traffic safety. To disseminate the information used for organizing the network and for assessing dangers in traffic, we develop an anonymous context-based broadcast protocol. This protocol requires the receivers to determine whether they are the intended destination for sent messages based on knowledge about their current situation in traffic. This communication system is then augmented with a reactive operation mode, where warnings can be issued and forwarded by vehicles. A vehicular communication platform that provides an implementation framework for the communication system, and integrates it within a vehicle, is also proposed. Experiments have been conducted, under various conditions, to test communication performance and the system’s ability to reduce accidents. The results indicate that that the proposed communication system can efficiently provide the exchange of safety information between vehicles.

On the Design of Next-Generation Routers and IP Networks

This thesis investigates distributed router architectures and IP networks with centralized control. While the current trend in IP-router architectures is towards decentralized design, there have also been research proposals for centralizing the control functions in IP networks. With continuous evolution of routers and IP networks, we believe that eventually IP networks in an autonomous system (AS) and a distributed router might converge into one network system. This system, which can be considered both as a distributed router and a centrally-controlled IP network, is divided into a control plane and a forwarding plane. The control plane is responsible for routing, management and signalling protocols, while the forwarding plane is responsible for forwarding packets. The work in this thesis covers both the forwarding and control planes. In the forwarding plane, we study network processor systems that function as forwarding elements in a distributed router. We introduce a system model and a simulation tool based on the model. Using the simulation tool, we investigate network processor system design by studying throughput, utilization, queueing behavior and packet delays. In addition to network processor systems, we study IP-address lookup, which is one of the key packet processing functions in Internet routers. Our work in IP-address lookup contains an efficient lookup algorithm, a scheme to divide the lookup procedure into two-stages in a distributed router, and an approach to perform efficient lookup on a router supporting multiple virtual routers. In the control plane, we study three emerging research issues with centralized control. We provide a thorough study of the routing convergence process in networks with centralized control, and compare it with decentralized link-state routing protocols. We propose an efficient approach to perform traffic engineering and routing in networks with centralized control, and compare it with an approach using optimized link weights. Finally, we present an approach to perform loop-free updates of forwarding tables when the forwarding paths change. This loop-free update approach is particularly useful in networks with centralized control. The results presented in this thesis are useful for building next-generation routers and IP networks with centralized control that might eventually converge into one network system. / QC 20100726

Human perception in speech processing

The emergence of heterogeneous networks and the rapid increase of Voice over IP (VoIP) applications provide important opportunities for the telecommunications market. These opportunities come at the price of increased complexity in the monitoring of the quality of service (QoS) and the need for adaptation of transmission systems to the changing environmental conditions. This thesis contains three papers concerned with quality assessment and enhancement of speech communication systems in adverse environments. In paper A, we introduce a low-complexity, non-intrusive algorithm for monitoring speech quality over the network. In the proposed algorithm, speech quality is predicted from a set of features that capture important structural information from the speech signal. Papers B and C describe improvements in the conventional pre- and post-processing speech enhancement techniques. In paper B, we demonstrate that the causal Kalman filter implementation is in conflict with the key properties in human perception and propose solutions to the problem. In paper C, we propose adaptation of the conventional postfilter parameters to changes in the noisy conditions. A perceptually motivated distortion measure is used in the optimization of postfilter parameters. Significant improvement over nonadaptive system is obtained. / QC 20100824
