O quarto capítulo investiga se a atividade de dispersão diurna em juvenis do sapo Dermatonotus muelleri estaria correlacionada com parâmetros fisiológicos associados à fisiologia térmica e balanço hídrico / Abstract: Temperature and water availability are factors that affect, importantly, the ecology, physiology, and behavior of amphibians. In this thesis, I aimed to explore different topics (ecological gradients, diseases, and activity) focusing on the thermal physiology and water balance of anuran amphibians. The first chapter presents a general introduction focused on one of the central themes of this thesis, the thermal physiology of amphibians. However, this chapter also explores the inter-relationship between body temperature regulation and water balance. The second chapter investigates whether or not physiological traits associated to thermal tolerances and water balance, in five anuran amphibians, vary along elevational gradients along two mountain ranges, Serra do Mar and Serra da Mantiqueira, in the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. The third chapter examines the potential effects of chytridomycosis - an emerging fungal disease claimed to cause amphibian population declines and extinctions worldwide due to cutaneous osmoregulatory disorders - on the water balance and mortality of anuran species from Brazil. The fourth chapter investigates whether or not the diurnal activity of dispersing juveniles of the burrowing frog, Dermatonotus muelleri, might be correlated with physiological traits associated to thermal physiology and water balance / Doutor

Vicentini, Tamiris Iara. January 2015 (has links)
Abstract: In broilers, females have a tendency to hatch earlier than males, what can leave them exposed to longer time of fasting until the access to water and feed on the farm, increasing heterogeneity and worsening the quality of the lot . This study analyzed: (1) if the tendency of females hatch earlier is associated with differences in development time or hatching, the RBC indices, the concentrations of gases and minerals in the blood, metabolism or bark characteristics, and if that changes its quality at the outbreak; (2) if the duration of the period of intra-egg pulmonary respiration, associated or not with heat stress during fetal life, interferes with the quality of the females in the outbreak, in their cardiorespiratory characteristics, hematological parameters, thermal preference and response to post-hatching thermal challenge. In Chapter 1 a theoretical approach to the subject is presented. In Chapter 2 are covered male and female birds as the duration of the hatching period, mass loss of the egg, eggshell percentage and conductance, quality of birds, biochemical and blood parameters. For this purpose, fertile eggs arrays of broilers (Cobb 500®) were incubated from day 13 under control temperature (37,5°C) or under hot (39°C). It was observed that females make the internal pipping earlier than males, and the internal pipping take less time until hatching and also the total incubation time when compared to males; They have a higher shell thickness than males. A significant difference was observed in MCV, MCH and MCHC poultry, in addition to pO2 and biochemical parameters in the blood. In chapter 3, newly hatched chicks females with short or long period between external pipping and hatching were evaluated the characteristics of the egg shells after -incubation, the yield of incubation and duration, quality, blood, heart and lung characteristics. Birds incubated under temperature at 39°C had lower shell thickness in the apical ... / Mestre

Argentim, Daniel, 1984. January 2016 (has links)
The appropriate feeding frequency can provide the fastest fish growing performance; however the choice of the best feeding strategy may vary according to environmental conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of feeding frequency and water temperatures in cobia performance. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 2x3 factorial design with six treatments and three replicates. The treatments consisted of the feed offering four or 24 meals a day to cobia juvenile (40 ± 4.5 g) and three water temperatures, 24, 27 or 30°C. The results showed that there was interaction between the water temperature and feeding frequency on fish performance. The fish fed four times a day, in water at 24 to 27°C, had higher average weight gain (AWG), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion rate (FCR) (p <0.05) than those fed 24 times a day, however, this difference was not significant for fish raised in water at 30°C. However, there was no difference in feed conversion rate (p> 0.05) for fish raised at 24, 27 and 30°C when the feed was distributed more times per day (24 times/day). Therefore, when raised in temperature 24 and 27 ° C, the cobia must be fed four times a day, but when the fish are raised in temperature to 30 ° C the evaluated feeding frequency (04 and 24 meals / day) do not affect cobia performance / Doutor

O limite térmico inferior de desenvolvimento do ciclo biológico (ovo-adulto) de H. axyridis é de 12,4oC e constante térmica de 243,9 graus-dia / The objective of this study was to determine the biological and thermal requirements of Harmonia axyridis fed daily with eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller). In laboratory experiments were conducted in climatic chambers at 18; 21; 24; 27 and 30oC. Larvae of the species were separated and kept in glass tubes and fed with eggs of A. kuehniella. The adult ladybug in 20 couples were separated and kept in plastic cups getting the same kind of food of the larval stage. The duration of larval, pupal and biological cycle (egg to adult) significantly decreased from 18 to 24oC, leveling off between 27 and 30oC. Survival was similar for first to fourth larval ínstar maintained at 18; 21 and 24oC, with greater survival of the biological cycle (egg to adult) and greater weight of the larvae to 27oC. The males of H. axyridis had higher longevity at temperatures of 18 and 21oC in comparison with females that were more enduring and fruitful to 24oC and 27oC, respectively. The lower thermal limit of the development life cycle (egg to adult) of H. axyridis was 12.4°C and thermal constant of 243.9 degree-days
