1	Teachers' Concerns Regarding the Adoption of the New Mathematics Textbook El-Saleh, Ilham Kamel 2011 August 1900 (has links) The goal of this study is to identify and examine teachers' concerns regarding their use of the new adopted mathematics textbook. In Texas, middle school mathematics teachers are often given a great deal of flexibility in the decision to use or not to use textbooks in their classrooms. This provides an opportunity for discussion about the concerns of teachers regarding the use of the newly adopted textbook. This study focused on investigating the concerns of teachers in relation to the adoption of the new textbooks for their districts based their years of experience in teaching the same class and their involvement on using the same textbook. In addition, this study identified the source of support in implementing the new curriculum materials. The study utilized the Concern Based Adoption Model (CBAM) as its theoretical framework. A non-experimental, cross-sectional survey design, incorporating a researcher-developed Stages of Concern Questionnaire (SoCQ), was used to address the research questions. A qualitative analysis was used to explore the teachers needs related to the use of the new adopted textbook and to provide additional insights into the teachers' concerns. The answers of 147 middle school mathematic teachers were analyzed in addition to teachers' interviews. Overall, the study found that teachers' highest concerns are focused mainly on the management of their work and that they are still in the early stages of implementing the new textbook. Teaching experience proved to be an important factor in explaining teachers' concerns in the implementation. Teachers feel isolated and unsupported in their use of the new curriculum materials and they expressed the need for support from their schools and from textbook publishers, as well as the need for more time and training to become familiar with the new textbook's content. They also wanted evidence that the new textbook supports student learning. Recommendations from the study include the need for the schools and the textbook publishing companies to work with middle grade school mathematics teachers to enable them to implement the new curriculum materials (textbooks) in the classrooms. 4	Curriculum Control And Teachers' Perceptions Of Professional Discretion And Satisfaction May, Donald 01 January 2010 (has links) The goal of this research was to investigate teachers' perceptions of professional discretion and satisfaction related to internal and external factors of curriculum control. Results of the study were intended to provide data to policy makers and school district administrators that could be used in the development and implementation of the curriculum reform process. Middle and high school teachers in a large central Florida school district completed the survey. The survey's six constructs were 1. Influence of Teacher Beliefs 2. Perceptions of Success and Satisfaction 3. Influence of Tests and Curriculum Guides 4. Teacher Control of Pedagogy 5. Leadership 6. Maintaining High Standards The research questions focused on determining the difference in perspectives due to years of teaching experience, level of teaching (middle or high school), and curriculum control category (high, medium, or low). The results revealed there was not significant disagreement among teacher perceptions based on years of teaching experience. However, results indicated significant differences in perceptions based on level of teaching and curriculum control category in regard to the six survey constructs. The construct of leadership revealed significant differences between both levels of teaching and curriculum control categories. Overall, the results indicated a significant relationship among curriculum control policies and effects on teachers' perceptions of professional discretion and satisfaction. The literature on curriculum reform efforts since the 1980s, specifically in the areas of curriculum standards, textbook adoption policies, testing policies and leadership practices, framed the study. The literature review focused on existing research issues within the six constructs and the research questions. The information gained from this study may be used to inform policies, improve teachers' working conditions, and promote teacher and leadership effectiveness. Recommendations for practice were addressed in terms of what policy makers, school district administrators, and individual classroom teachers can and should do to implement and support meaningful curriculum reform.
