ON SIMULATING COMPRESSIBLE FLOWS WITH A DENSITY BASED SOLVER

A coupled density based solver in the framework of foam-extend is used to perform simulations of transonic flows. The solver is based on an explicit and time-accurate algorithm and is coupled to a compressible Unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) and a Large Eddy Simulation (LES) module. The solver is first attested on canonical compressible flow scenarios such as a 1-D shock tube and the transonic flow through a 2-D channel. Following this, a 2-D URANS simulation of the flow within the passages of a High Pressure Turbine Nozzle Guide Vane (HPT-NGV) is performed and compared against experimental data. Finally, preliminary results of a 3-D LES on a simplified geometry of the HPT-NGV are presented. In the future, this numerical setup will be used to study indirect combustion noise in aircraft engines.

A Pedagogical Guide to the Twenty-Four Preludes for Piano, Op.67 (1814), by Johann Nepomuk Hummel

Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778–1837) was a leading composer, virtuoso pianist, and well-known pedagogue during the late Classical and early Romantic periods. His music was important and frequently performed during his lifetime, but his piano preludes, Op. 67, seem to have been completely forgotten. These preludes reflect the traditional use of the prelude, with many traditional piano techniques. The influence of Hummel's Op. 67 on the next generations is clearly shown in the similarities in their compositions, especially the works of Chopin. This dissertation includes a formal analysis of the preludes and a discussion of each specific type of piano techniques with practicing suggestions, providing a pedagogical guide for students on how to use Hummel's works to prepare for other composers.

The purpose of this dissertation is to help international saxophonists develop an enlightened understanding and ultimately, performance of two selected pieces by Chinese composer Zou Xiangping (邹向平) (b. 1951), Images of Yalong River for Alto Saxophone and Piano (雅砻江印:为中音萨克斯管和钢琴) and Song of Chuanjiang River Boatman for Saxophone Quartet (川江纤夫之歌: 为萨克斯管四重奏) (2022). The compositional background, the relevant introduction about Chinese culture, the manner in which the composer combined this with Western compositional techniques, and comprehensive performance advice of each piece are provided.

Investigation of Inlet Guide Vane Wakes in a F109 Turbofan Engine with and without Flow Control

A series of experiments were conducted in a F109 turbofan engine to investigate the unsteady wake profiles of an Inlet Guide Vane (IGV) at a typical spacing to the downstream fan at subsonic and transonic relative blade velocities. The sharp trailing-edge vanes were designed to produce a wake profile consistent with modern IGV. Time averaged baseline measurements were first performed with the IGV located upstream of the aerodynamic influence of the fan. Unsteady experiments were performed with an IGV-fan spacing of 0.43 fan chords. High-frequency on-vane pressure measurements showed strong peak-to-peak amplitudes at the blade passing frequency (BPF) of 4.7 psi at the transonic fan speeds. High-frequency total pressure measurements of the IGV wake were taken between the IGV and fan. Results showed that the total pressure loss coefficient of the time averaged IGV wake is reduced by 30% for the subsonic fan, and increased by a factor of 2 for the transonic fan compared to the baseline. Time resolved wake profiles for subsonic fan speeds show constructive and destructive interactions over each blade pass generated by the fan potential flow field. Time resolved wake profiles for the transonic fan speeds show that shock interactions with the IGV surface result in the wake shedding off of the vane at the BPF. Furthermore, the effectiveness of trailing edge blowing (TEB) flow control was investigated. TEB is the method of injecting air aft of the IGV to reduce the low pressure regions (deficits) in the viscous wakes shed by the vanes. Minimizing the IGV wakes reduces the forcing function on the downstream fan blades, thereby reducing high cycle fatigue. The TE span of the vane contains discrete holes at the axial centerline for TEB. Baseline results showed that TEB eliminates the IGV wake, while using only 0.03% of the total engine mass flow per IGV. TEB for the subsonic fan at the close spacing shows complete wake filling using the same mass flow as the baseline. TEB for the transonic fan shows a reduction of 68% in the total pressure loss coefficient, while requiring 2.5 times the mass flow as the baseline. / Ph. D.

Traumatic Brain Injury: A Case Study of the School Reintegration Process

The purpose of this linear-analytic exploratory case study is to illustrate the reintegration process from acute care and rehabilitative care to the traditional school setting after one has sustained a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). TBI is an unrecognized educational challenge. Few educational professionals are aware of the divarication of TBI. Traumatic Brain Injury is the leading cause of death and disability in children and adolescents in the United States. The review of literature reveals there is a void between the requirements of the law and educator preparedness regarding TBI. There is a need for a proactive means to enhance transition and reintegration of a TBI student from rehabilitation to the traditional school setting. The research study showed the schematic efforts of one school division to integrate a TBI student. This exploratory case study emphasized the importance of a proactive education treatment planning process that facilitates the transition to the school setting. The study is qualitative in design and examined the sequence of subtopics of the problem, a review of relevant literature, methods used, findings of the data collected and analyzed, and conclusions and implications from the findings. This case study is analogous to a single experiment. Data were gathered from archival records, educational records, medical records, teachers and therapists comments, friends' perceptions, family histories, recollections, and interviews with participants in the reintegration process. There were three major domains that have been extracted from the case study. The first domain, the strengths and weakness of the student in the post traumatic brain injury environment were collated, collected, and analyzed. The second domain, the adaptation of Larry involved three general sub sets: (1) Larry's self adaptation, (2) the participants' roles in the student's adaptation, and (3) other influential factors in Larry's adaptation. The third domain centers on the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies used by the school division in the reintegration process. The strengths fell into five general categories; (1) caring professional (2) existing structure for disabled students, (3) cooperation, (4) willingness of general education teachers to make accommodations, and (5) willingness of school-based clinicians to try a variety of approaches. The weaknesses consisted of seven categories; (1) little knowledge of TBI, (2) no in-house pro-active plan,(3) no historical data on TBI, (4) no written records, (5) not central structure (scattered resources), (6) no written plan, and (7) no roster teacher/case manager with authority to direct staff with TBI scenario. The study will enhance the understanding of TBI and will provide a meaningful guide to parents, educators, and school based clinicians. The results illustrated that the data base of this study contained the critical pieces of evidence, this evidence was presented neutrally, and the evidence is valid. A holistic overview of the findings included the major domains and data sources that were explored. Additionally, the integrant building blocks that support this holistic overview are provided. In conclusion this case study discusses implications and recommendations. Of note is the reconciliation of this case study with the literature on TBI. / Ed. D.

Guiding Network-Centrtic Architectural Design: a Style-Based Approach

With the advance of reliable network technology, software development has progressed from traditional, platform-centric software construction to network-centric software evolution. An evidence of this change is largely reflected in the technologies that are supporting the emerging theory of Network-Centric Operations (NCO). Amongst these technologies is software architecture as a software engineering sub-discipline. Although the concepts of network centricity are widely recognized within the software and system engineering communities, no unified characterization of network-centric software systems is unanimously adopted. The state-of-the-practice is characterized by differing interpretations about how we should design and implement this class of systems. In this research, our focus is twofold: 1) Providing a characterization framework to reason about network-centric software systems and 2) introducing one solution approach to designing this class of system based on a new architectural style, the network-centric architectural style. In so doing, we set the stage for the software architecture community to analyze the "fitness of use" of current architectural styles and architecture design practices within this new network-centric paradigm. In addition, we set the stage for our continued research that will address further software engineering challenges pertinent to network-centric software systems, which include capability-based requirements engineering and quality attributes-based design. / Master of Science
