La Grande Loge Nationale Indépendante et Régulière pour la France et les Colonies Françaises (1910-1940) / The Regular National Grand Lodge of France (1910-1940)

Delon, Francis 19 June 2018 (has links)
Founded on November 5th 1913, the Regular National Grand Lodge of France plays a specific role in French Freemasonry. Indeed, unlike the Grand Orient of France and the Grand Lodge of France which are strongly committed to social issues, it focuses on the moral formation of its members and has a a symbolical approach. The following points will be emphasized: - the notion of “Masonic Regularity” defined by the United Grand Lodge of England ; - the reasons for the absence of a “regular” Grand Lodge in France in spite of the foundation of two French speaking lodges in London ; - the evolution of the English speaking Lodge “Anglo-Saxon” n°343 founded in 1899 by several English and American Masons under the Jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of France but not recognized by London although it required its members to believe in the Great Architect of the Universe ; - the underestimated influence of the spiritualist Masonic current of Jean Bricaud, the mason from Lyon; - the failure of Bro. De Ribaucourt and his Lodge “Centre des Amis” to form this new structure because of the opposition of the Grand Orient of France to the presence of a Christian Rite: the Rectified Scottish Rite ; - the setting of British Military Lodges and the failure to rally several other Lodges of the Grand Orient of France during World War I ; - the specificity of the Regular National Grand Lodge of France (British predominance, the moral qualms of catholic Freemasons and the pioneer role of its two Lodges of Research) ; - the relations with the United Grand Lodge of England and the other “Regular” Grand Lodges, and the impact of the Declaration of 1929 promulgating the Basic Principles for Grand Lodge Recognition.

The subject of this work is analyses and interpretation of David Lodge´s campus novels. In the concrete, the diploma paper is focused on sources and elements of comicality, especially humour, satire and parody, in Lodge´s free trilogy Changing Places, Small World and Nice Work. The starting point of this diploma paper is characterisation of the genre of the campus novel, with the inclusion of the social situation in the period of the genesis of this genre, and the short outline of its representatives, with emphasis on the novel of Kingsley Amis Lucky Jim. In the following the work considers the ways of the realisation of comicality in the text and from this basis the practical part derives. The main aim is to point out the ways of usage of comic in Lodge´s campus novels and this purpose is achieved in the analysis of the particular texts.

Negotiating progress : promoting 'modern' physics in Britain, 1900-1940

Clarke, Imogen January 2012 (has links)
The first four decades of the twentieth century was a period of rapid development in physics. The late nineteenth century discoveries of X-rays, Becquerel rays and subatomic particles had revealed new properties of matter, and the early twentieth century quantum and relativity theories added to the notion that the discipline was undergoing a fundamental change in thought and practice. Historians and scientists alike have retrospectively conceived of a sharp divide between nineteenth century and twentieth century physics, applying the terms ‘classical’ and ‘modern’ to distinguish between these two practices. However, recent scholarship has suggested that early twentieth century physicists did not see this divide as self-evident, and in fact were responsible for consciously constructing these categories and definitions. This thesis explores the creation of the terms ‘classical’ and ‘modern’ physics in Britain, and the physicists responsible. I consider how these terms were employed in ‘public’ arenas (lectures, books, newspapers, museums) influencing the wider reception of ‘modern’ physics. I consider not only the rhetorics employed by ‘modern’ physicists, but also those we would now consider to be ‘classical’, revealing a diverse range of potential definitions of ‘modern’ physics. Furthermore, even within the ‘modernists’ themselves, there was considerable disagreement over how their work was to be presented, as industrially applicable, or of value simply as intellectual knowledge in and of itself. There were also different notions of how scientific ‘progress’ should be portrayed, whether knowledge advanced through experimental refinement or theoretical work. Early twentieth century ‘modern’ physics appeared to discard long held theories, rejecting much of the discipline’s past. As such, physicists’ connection to the legacy of Newton was under threat. Furthermore, the instability of science more generally was revealed: if physicists had shown the old theories to be wrong, then why should the new ones be any different? This had severe implications as to how the public placed ‘trust’ in science. I explore how physicists carefully managed the ‘public’ transition from ‘classical’ to ‘modern’ physics, regaining public trust during a period of scientific ‘revolution’ and controversy.

The grim security of the past: the historiography of Henry Cabot Lodge

Singer, Claude 01 April 1973 (has links)
By birth, education, and association, Henry Cabot Lodge belonged to an established New England tradition of attention to history and respect for historical writing. He lived during troubled times, and he realized, as his writings indicate, that America was rapidly changing, that old habits were disappearing, and that powerful new forces were at work in the nation and the world. How Lodge reacted to these circumstances is reflected, in part, in his historical writing. This thesis is an examination of Lodge's historiographic efforts. It is an attempt, through an analysis of style and predominant themes, to describe the cultural values that lie behind simple historical narrative.

This work has the goal of proposing a didactic sequence, with historical-philosophical approach, using experiments and historical demonstrations in the introduction of electromagnetism concepts in High School. Through this didactic sequence, the students of high school are presented to the concept of electromagnetic waves, in a historical dynamic that includes discussions about the nature of science. The historical experiment chosen didactically as central is the Oliver Lodge's demonstrative experiment, which designed an effective system for receiving electromagnetic waves whose main innovation was the use of the coesor instead of the Hertz’s antenna. In this dissertation, is assumed a pedagogical perspective that approaches the Historical-Critical Pedagogy (PHC) insofar as it considers the dissemination of live and up-to-date contents and the transmission of knowledge historically accumulated by humanity, central tasks of Education. We verified an affinity between the PHC and the Science Teaching and we concluded that the PHC referential can subsidize the use of History and Philosophy of Science in Science Teaching. Finally, a report and evaluation of the development and effective application of the didactic sequence proposed in the classroom is presented. The Educational Product developed in this master's work consists of the didactic sequence and its description, in the texts and questionnaires used in the classes and in the text to support the teacher.
