The influence of tradition on the process of organizational change; a study of two Oregon child care centers: Edgefield Lodge, Troutdale, and St. Mary's Home for Boys, Beaverton

Grant, Helen Paula 01 June 1970 (has links)
This paper traces over time changes in concepts of child care using two care centers in Oregon as examples. Early in the twentieth century, the ideas of the time stressed the need to institutionalize dependent , neglected, and retarded children in a setting which focused on simple custodial care. The lack of environmental stimulation was evident. With the advances in the nation’s social, economic, and medical services in midcentury, besides the advances in technology, attitudes started to change which stressed the importance of care-giving institutions such as foster homes, child clinics and mental health facilities as well as specialized residential care for more disturbed or delinquent children. Child care has improved greatly because of the greater availability of both federal and state funds for private and public institutions and the increased use of diagnostic centers. One of the significant results from this change in simply housing children in need to housing and treating them in multifaceted and environmentally improved care facilities is the stimulus given to constantly develop and innovate knowledge and methods in the care of children.

Quest and Conquest in the Fiction of David Lodge / Suche und Eroberung in David Lodges Fiktion

Sava, Ramona-Mihaela January 2006 (has links) (PDF)
In spite of David Lodge’s rejection of the theories labelled as poststructuralist, this thesis proves that his novels can be interpreted from a Foucauldian perspective. The concept of discourse, seen by the French philosopher as intricately linked with knowledge, power and truth, enables the distinction of four main discourses in Lodge’s novels, religious, gender, ethnic and literary. The analysis reveals that in David Lodge’s fiction there is a perpetual struggle for power illustrating Foucault’s idea of the interdependence between power, knowledge, truth and discourses circulated by institutions.

Audet, Michel 23 July 2021 (has links)
In literary translation, humour is known to raise numerous difficulties and the scholars interested in its translation most often study puns, jokes, and short texts, leaving aside the translation of humour in long texts, such as novels. The object of this study is humour in David Lodge's novel, Deaf Sentence, and in its French version, La vie en sourdine, translated by Maurice and Yvonne Couturier. The thesis has five chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to humour narrated, lexicalised and studied. In chapter 2, I lay out the conceptual and operational frameworks of the case study and in chapter 3 I introduce David Lodge, the novel under study and the Couturier couple who created the French version. Chapter 4 focuses on the passages in the source text to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contribute to them, and Chapter 5 is dedicated to the target text, its similarities and differences with the source text and the fate of the passages to which I attributed humorous effects, or which contributed to it, in the source text. Mediagraphy and appendices follow.

Post-Discharge Adjustment of Children Treated at Edgefield Lodge

Erickson, Sandra M. 01 January 1976 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to assess the adjustment of 157 children discharged from Edgefield Lodge in an effort toward accountability to both clients served and the public. Level of adjustment of the children was determined by checking the records of various community agencies including the Police, Sherriff, Youth Service Centers, Juvenile Court, Children’s Services Division, and the schools. Using the information gathered, the adjustment of each child was scored using the Community Adaptation Scale which was developed for that purpose. Theses adjustment scores were the main outcome variable in the study.

A Biomimetic Lodge District for Manaus: A Demand Side Analysis

Marmolejo, Luis Unknown Date (has links)
Emerging environmental designs have reacted toward a new environmental scope and agenda to provide a better understanding of functionality and sustainability. Biomimicry is a recent environmental approach that mimics nature for improving processes and structures design. This has important consequences for urban development and planning. The most relevant for us is that these new structures help us to breakdown the false dichotomy between landscape and architecture and therefore are ideal to integrate urban planning and to rethink environmental standards within ongoing development. The main objective of this study is to determine the feasibility of building a peripheral district in Manaus using biomimicry designed lodges. Our main interest is to identify the types of customers that could be involved in this urban development project. This study analyzes the willingness of customers to go for a biomimicry lodge. The analyzed information will come from a survey of a non-randomized population. Our target group are mature postmodern societies -sorted out by country of residence and willingness to travel-. The sample tested different attitudes, values and beliefs on environment which will help us to break down patterns of consumption using the literature review as reference. The study uses ordinary least squares (OLS) to determine significant predictors for different types of customers. This survey might help environmental activists, local authorities and social entrepreneurs with data for successfully developing alternative environmental designs. Our direct clients are real estate developers, social entrepreneurs and the business community in general. However, these results have also an indirect effect on the actual state of environmental design trends and on policy making. Local authorities might consider these results for agenda setting and as well for mobilizing civil society for better ecological practices.
