During our research, we reflected on schooling and didactization of the poem genre, inserted in the Poets of School Notebook of the Portuguese Language Olympics Program Escrevendo o Futuro (Writing the Future) (OLPEF), a public-private partnership between MEC and Fundação Itaú Social, under the technical coordination of São Paulo’s NGO CENPEC. The proposed material includes both the teaching of reading and textual production of the poem genre, for the Brazilian public school students in the 5th and 6th years of elementary school, as well as teacher training based on the formalist view of language. The OLPEF continuously expands its field in daily school practices, though its quality is not evaluated institutionally, and, in the academies, it still occupies little space in the analyses. Our research originated from the consideration of one the findings of Padilha (2005), in her doctoral thesis - Os gêneros poéticos em livros didáticos de língua portuguesa do Ensino Fundamental: uma abordagem enunciativo-discursiva. In it, the author states that the different ways to approach the genre of poetic discourse in textbooks demonstrate the theoretical misunderstandings of these materials, in regards to what is to be the conception of literary genres and, more specifically, of poems discursive genres. Such endeavors are linked, still, to studies grounded in literary theory, permeated by formalist conceptions which privilege, especially, the aspects of compositional form. Our objective was to describe the ways in which discursive genre poem was taught in the 2nd edition of the Poets of School Notebook of the Portuguese Language Olympics Program Escrevendo o Futuro (Writing the Future) 2010 and suggest a reading and production of poem in the enunciative-discursive perspective, considering formal, socio-historical, discursive and ideological aspects, embedded in the verbal creation process. Our reflections and analyses were based mainly on enunciative-discursive theory of socio-historical approach of Bakhtin and the Circle and in the theory of teaching and learning of Vygotsky. The analysis of the didactic model revealed that the conception of language as communication and formal approach of the poem takes the teaching to a traditional direction in which identifying, memorizing and locating are priorities in the study of the poetic text. Added to this, the didactic sequence, developed by Genevan scholars, tend to treat the poem rigidly, without giving opening to the teacher for changing the planning. At the end of our investigation, we wish that students can take, early on, the word, in a democratic way, in the country in which they live, so the gaze of the teaching of the first language should be facing the reading and production of texts in different discursive genres and, furthermore, to the search for and understanding of dialogical relations in them.

America's athletic missionaries: The Olympic Games and the creation of a national culture, 1896-1936.

Dyreson, Mark Sanford, Dyreson, Mark Sanford January 1989 (has links)
During the late nineteenth century American reformers crafted a physical culture designed to help adjust their nation to the social changes fostered by industrialization, urbanization and immigration. The creators of modern sport considered athletics a "technology" for building a modern liberal civilization. Their "sporting republic" quickly gained a prominent place in American life. America's Athletic Missionaries examines the impact that United States participation in the Olympic Games, from 1896 to 1936, had on American culture. The idea of the sporting republic united politics and the strenuous life. In the Olympics Americans discovered a particularly rich environment for both athletic and political demonstrations. The architects of the sporting republic thought that sport could create livable urban environments, fight crime, promote democracy, Americanize the recently acquired empire, and assimilate immigrant populations. American Olympic teams earned the moniker of "America's athletic missionaries" for their performances at the first five Olympic Games. American Olympians enjoyed the active support of the political, business and academic elite. Lionized by the press and showered with public acclaim, the Olympians became symbols of the power of sport in channeling human energy in socially productive directions. During the 1920s the role of the sporting republic underwent a transformation. Sport, as had many other facets of Progressive reform, had been accepted as part of the orthodoxy of American values. But the political nature of sport changed. Abandoned by intellectuals who associated it with middle-class materialism, sport was increasingly cast as a form of escapism and disassociated from political action. The new version of sport became one of the totems of consumer culture. The press depicted the Olympic Games of the 1920s as sensational spectacles, without any significant political overtones. By the 1930s Americans had rediscovered the political uses of sport. Much of the world had come to view the Olympic Games as tests of national strength and many countries devoted great resources in the pursuit of athletic conquest. This study examines the relationship between political and physical culture, the uses of athletic ideology in the construction of American civilization, and the function of sport as a cultural tool.

Sportovci jako hrdinové - konstrukce a vývoj obrazu českých olympijských medailistů / Athletes and Heroes - construction and evolution of Czech olympic medalist image

Houzar, Petr January 2009 (has links)
The diploma thesis "Athletes as heroes - construction and evolution of Czech olympic medalist image" deals with media construction of olympic Winter image and its following trasformation into national hero myth. It approaches the topic from the perspective of semiotic analysis. It informs about the key concepts of semiotics and media studies like visual communication, sign, code, myth, social construction of reality, representation and stereotype. These concepts are consequently used as tools for the analysis of photos (thein legends) and headlines in daily press. The text shows on the case of six olympic winners (between years 1998 - 2008) how Czech daily press dealt and built individual stories a basic archetypes. In its first part it offers basic theoretical frame serving to understand the hero image as the social construct. Athlete with his win attracts new - medial constructed - identity. In the second part text tries to analyse media contents that deal with athetes images immediate after their olympic victory. It arrives to following conclusions: media have a tendency to produce the stories od victory, that are gender unequal and stereotyped. And finally, text show us individual images, their basic signs and confrontation, that signifies very similar narrative pracices and zero progress in time.

The Olympic Glory of Jesse Owens: A Contribution to Civil Rights and Society

Nash, Casey Aaron 15 December 2012 (has links) (PDF)
Jesse Owens was the star of the Berlin Olympics in 1936. His four gold medals in Hitler's Germany, as an African American, had far reaching implications back in the United States. Despite segregation and a social hierarchy that was an impasse to both black opportunity and achievement, Owens created a lasting legacy that drastically impacted race relations. The purpose of this thesis was to examine what the Olympic glory of Owens represented for society. Owens as an Olympian in 1936 manufactured a brand of social capital that tied people together in commonality—as Americans. As well, in both myth and deed, Owens has been traditionally credited with challenging Hitler's beliefs of Aryan Supremacy. Yet, Owens was also a race pioneer, as his athletic feats were read in newspapers all over the country, and as a result, helped shift the consciousness of Southerners who were historically ignorant of black achievement.

The Pandemic Olympics: A Thematic Analysis of COVID-19 and the Tokyo Olympic Games from a Canadian Perspective

Stead, Aiden George 22 September 2022 (has links)
Hosting the Tokyo 2020 Olympics during the COVID-19 pandemic presented a major crisis for the Olympic movement, both in Canada and around the world. The Pandemic led to an unprecedented postponement of the games and to widespread concern that the Tokyo Olympics could become a mega-spreader event. The purpose of the present study is to provide an empirical accounting of the Canadian experience prior to and during the Tokyo Games, specifically through a thematic analysis of content related to COVID-19 and the Olympic Games, as produced by major Canadian media sources and key Canadian sport organizations. Utilizing a communication centered view of crisis informed by Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) and narrative management, the present study examined the crisis response of major Canadian sport organizations, most specifically the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) (Coombs, 2007; DiSanza et al., 2018; Gigliotti, 2020). A unique methodological approach was used in the present study, beginning with both database and grey literature search strategies to collect data from Canadian media sources and sport organizations. Sources included the CBC, the National Post, and the Globe and Mail as media sources, and the Canadian Olympic Committee, Own the Podium, and Sport Canada as major sport organizations. Researchers then followed a data analysis process utilizing a framework of thematic analysis from Braun and Clarke (2006), collaborative analysis following Richards and Hemphill (2018), and the use of software and visual narrative analysis based on the work of Hoeber et al. (2017). This methodology allowed the researchers to analyze a large sample of 930 documents published between March 11th, 2020 and August 22nd 2021. The results of the present study revealed a complex and changing narrative in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent postponement of the Tokyo Olympics. The decision by the COCC to withdraw from the Olympics in March 2020 was portrayed as a principled stand that influenced the IOC into postponing the Games to a year later. The COC continued to focus on promoting athletes in their public messaging and presented a strong, coherent narrative that appeared consistent with the values of key stakeholders and minimized the reputational threat posed to the organization. The IOC however received substantial negative media coverage, especially in the lead up to the Games in 2021. During the initial period of the Games themselves, media coverage focused on new COVID-19 cases and the effect of strict safety protocols. However, by August 2021 there appeared to have been a significant shift in the narrative, with the focus becoming stories and performances of Olympic athletes. The results of the present study emphasize the importance of effective narrative management in crisis communications, and the consistently of this approach with SCCT (Coombs, 2007; DiSanza et al., 2018). Furthermore, the effectiveness of the COC’s crisis response also reinforces a communication centered view of crisis, where the perceptions of stakeholders are viewed as a key element of defining organizational crisis management (Gigliotti, 2020). To minimize the reputational threat to their organizations, crisis managers should ensure that stakeholder perceptions remain central to their crisis communication decision making, and managers should also consider the importance of crafting a strong and coherent narrative.

Resistance is Never Futile: Un-sporting Surfing as Radical Female Behavior

Unknown Date (has links)
Using the narrative imagery of Instagram and the cultural narrative of the Olympics, I explore the role of agency and autonomy in modern sport with a focus on the commercial and institutional arms of surfing. This project is an attempt to evaluate visual and cultural narrative from the perspective of a literary scholar and to root theory and philosophy in issues that go beyond scholarship and academics. In chapter one, I use sports sociologists Jennifer Hargreaves and Krista Comer as well as Jean Kilbourne and Rosalind Gill to illuminate and explore two surf-centric Instagram accounts, both of which imagine a story of surfing through a mostly visual medium. In chapter two, I turn to Elizabeth Grosz and Michel Foucault to help explore the institutionalized arm of surfing through its recent inclusion in the Olympic Games. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection
