Selfmoordgeneigdheid : 'n bedryfsielkundige ondersoek binne die Suid-Afrikaans Polisiediens in die Noordwes-Provinsie / Gerrit Roelof Johannes Strijdom

Strijdom, Gerrit Roelof Johannes January 1999 (has links)
Suicide is a reality in South Africa that can be confirmed by the increasing statistics annually. The South African Police Service (SAPS) also shows increasing numbers of suicide. However, these numbers only focus on successful suicides and little is known about the suicidal ideation of members within the service. It now seems that only the tip of the iceberg is causing panic. although the problem might be much bigger than originally thought. In this research the emphasis will be on possible correlations between coping sense of coherence and job satisfaction on the one hand and suicidal ideation on the other hand within the SAPS in the North West Province. If correlations between coping: sense of coherence, job satisfaction and suicidal ideation can be found, it can be of great significance for the SAPS, especially in terms of recruitments, selection, development and management of human recourses. The objective of this research is to determine if there is a relationship between coping sense of coherence, job satisfaction and suicidal ideation among police personnel. The focus of the literature was on the conceptualising of suicidal ideation and if suicidal ideation can be linked to construct such as coping, sense of coherence and job satisfaction. The research is quantitative in nature and entails a survey design. The population consisted of 120 police personnel in the North West Province, of which all were ranked between constable to inspector. Four measuring instruments were used, namely the Adult Suicidal Ideation Questionnaire, the Minnesota Satisfaction Questionnaire, the Sense of Coherence Questionnaire and the ways of Coping Questionnaire. The SAS-program was used for statistical analysis purposes. Descriptive statistics, t-test, product moment correlations and multiple regression analysis were used to analyse the results. Police personnel indicated dissatisfaction with regard to the remuneration that they receive, as well as physical working conditions, supervision-human and company policy. They use coping styles such as seeking social support, planful problem-solving as well as positive reappraisal. Black police members showed to be more suicidal than white members. The empirical study showed that dissatisfaction with specific aspects of their work and sense of coherence could predict suicidal ideation. Recommendations for future research are made in the conclusion. / Thesis (M.A.)--Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education, 2000.

Notions of community in South African television advertising : a study in communication and the pursuit of community in South Africa as revealed through interviews about selected television advertising

Andrew, Richard Charles January 1999 (has links)
Submitted for the Degree of Master of Technology: Graphic Design, Technikon Natal, 1999. / The self-creation demanded of us by our national realities is no different from that which similar realities are demanding of others. The past has left us orphans, as it has the rest of the planet, and we must join together in inventing our common future. World history has become everyone's task, and our own labyrinth is the labyrinth of all mankind. / M

Arts and censorship in South Africa 1948-2000

Allard, Raymond H. January 2000 (has links)
Dissertation submitted in partial compliance with the requirements for the Master's Degree in Technology: Fine Art(Printmaking), Technikon Natal, 2000. / This dissertation is concerned with the effects of censorship on the arts community during the apartheid era in South Africa, and in the post apartheid era that followed. Through interviews and various sources, a picture will be presented that examines the contrasts and similarities of the two eras. Chapter One will present an overview of South African history, from its beginnings in 1653 to the first popular election in 1994. It will show how the religious beliefs and accompanying attitudes of the in-coming colonialists created a social atmosphere in which the system of apartheid was able to flourish and grow. It will also show how apartheid ultimately crumbled under pressure from growing resistance and violence among the people it sought to control. Chapter Two is comprised primarily of the results of several interviews with selected artists, showing how the various individuals thought about censorship, how they dealt with all the restrictive laws, and how they were able to pursue their art making under these conditions. Personal experiences illuminate the effects of such censorship, and opinions about the value and necessity of censorship are summarized. Various of the interviewees talk specifically about what actions they took under the apartheid regime, and how they viewed, and continue to view, the role of the artist in society. Chapter Three uses several case studies to illustrate what is currently happening concerning censorship and art in the post-apartheid era. Opinions and reactions to current conditions will be presented, and specific instances of censorship or attempted censorship will offer a comparison with the previous era. This will illustrate how much liberty artists today enjoy in South Africa. Several significant issues are raised by such examples; Issues of potency and importance to any culture. Finally, the artists themselves look ahead, and provide a picture of the future for arts in this society . / M

South Asian Women’s Experiences In Counseling: An Exploration Of Working Alliance, Multicultural Competence, Acculturation, And Cultural Value Conflicts

Rasheed, Masuma 12 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to examine predictors of client-counselor working alliance by understanding the effects of acculturation, perceived multicultural competence in counselors, and cultural value conflicts among South Asian women. The study was based on a nonrandom sample of women ages 18 to 39 years living in the United States who had completed at least three counseling sessions with a mental health professional in the last 5 years. Forty participants completed the online survey. Participants were recruited through personal contacts, social networking Internet websites, businesses, agencies, and places of worship. The majority of participants were highly educated, second-generation women descending from India or Pakistan. The full survey included an eligibility screening questionnaire, demographic questionnaire, the Working Alliance Inventory-Short Revised with an average mean of 4.82, Cross-Cultural Counseling Inventory-Revised with an average mean of 4.17 and reliability of excellent internal consistency reliability at ? = .92, Asian Values Scale-Revised with an average mean score of 2.44, and Cultural Value Conflicts Scale for South Asian Women with a mean score of 3.33. Participants reported experiencing working alliance often within the therapeutic relationship and experienced middle levels of Asian value adherence, falling in the integration level. The results indicated that participants experienced neutral to agreeable cultural value conflicts. Bivariate correlations indicated a statistically significant, moderate relationship between participants’ perceptions of counselors’ multicultural competence and their reports of working alliance in the therapeutic relationship. All other correlations reflected small to moderate effect sizes; however, these correlations were not statistically significant. Similarly, bivariate regression indicated that perceptions of multicultural counselor competence predicted the client-counselor working alliance to a moderate degree. From the results of hierarchical linear regression, acculturation and cultural value conflicts did not predict client-counselor working alliance even after accounting for perceived multicultural competence in counselors. The strongest predictor of client-counselor working alliance was the perceived multicultural competence of counselors. Probable reasons for the results of this study were discussed, limitations were identified, and suggestions for counseling practice were provided. Implications for the profession of counseling were made, and recommendations for future research were provided.

The law of the sea and ASEAN states : maritime arrangements of ASEAN states in the Malacca Straits, Gulf of Thailand and the southern South China Sea

Kasemsuvan, Sorajak January 1987 (has links)
This thesis examines the arrangements and relationship amongst the member-States of ASEAN - the Association of South-east Asian Nations (though with less emphasis on Brunei, which only became the sixth and latest member of the Association upon its independence in January 1984) concerning the modern law of the sea issues that can most affect their national interests and the region directly, and which have developed particularly through the Third UN Law of the Sea Conference (UNCLOS III). Such issues are, first, the question of passage through the Straits of Malacca and Singapore, which has borne considerable law of the sea significance even long before the sixteenth century. Hence, such historical background is also explored. Secondly, since the Association consists of the two largest archipelagic States - Indonesia and the Philippines, considerations are given to the emergent archipelagic State concept, as recently developed, which is proved to have profound implications to the ASEAN members. So is the new concept of exclusive economic zone - an extended jurisdictional zone for marine living and non-living resources. The application of both of the latter concepts in the region will consequently render clear beneficiary and disadvantaged States among the members of ASEAN. Search for use of resources in the sea has also led ASEAN States to series of continental shelf boundary delimitation and one joint development arrangement agreements. These are analysed in comparison with a close examination of recent State practice and international adjudication. The thesis aims ultimately to demonstrate what roles the so-called 'ASEAN spirit' have played in influencing the practice of ASEAN States, their conflict management, their co-operation and their general outlook regarding such major law of the sea issues of the region.
