Aprendizagem de conceitos químicos num curso EaD: contribuições da Teoria da Atividade / Learning of chemical concepts in a Distance Education course: contributions of Teaching Activity

João Ricardo Sanchez 03 December 2018 (has links)
Todavia, as informações ou experiências sócio-culturais se mostraram mais evidentes no formato AE a distância em detrimento da AOE presencial / As the Distance Education (DE) becomes more popular many course are being offered in the on-line version, including Science degree courses. In previous papers, based on Leontievs Activity Theory, we developed Teaching Guiding Activities (TGAs) about the indentification-separation of heavy metals and investigated the potential of these TGAs as a theoretical-methodological proposal in a face-to-face Chemistry Teaching course. The researchers regular face-to-face Chemistry degree and his work as a monitor in the Distance Education course at São Paulo University helped defining this paper central question: in Distance Education, how would a TA engage students toward the learning of chemical knowledge ? The theoretical bases of this paper are the works developed by Vigotski, Leontiev and Engeström. The methodology used was the qualitative research, with focus on the Microgenetic Analysis. The empirical field was the on-line discussion forums, where the TAs were available. The TA/forum was developed with distance education students from 7 different cities in São Paulo State. When planning the TA-DE (TGA for the Distance Education), we focused on not having experimental practices as it is common in face-to-face courses because the student would be alone during the activity and would not have many laboratory resources. We could notice that in the distance activity the student-student interaction was not satisfactory as the participants would interact with the researcher/professor. The results made it evident that in the 8 groups, in which the TA was developed, several words appeared on the subjects studied, directly or indirectly, and that in the system of analysis carried out pointed to important processes of conceptual elaboration, some concepts were developed, some were questioned and/or refuted. At the face-to-face education the TA development would be analyzed mostly from the individual perspective and we believe that this characteristic was kept at the Distance Education. However, social-historical information or experiences were shown more during the development of the distance TA than in the face-to-face one

Matching instructional design to field dependent and field independent learners: implications for online design in distance education

Parcels, Burtis George January 2008 (has links)
Thesis (Ed.D.)--Boston University / PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you. / Field dependent and field independent cognitive styles are contrasting ways of perceiving and processing information. This study investigated how the cognitive styles of field dependence (FD) and field independence (FI) affect the achievement levels of distance learners. Cognitive style refers to the manner in which an individual perceives and processes information. As described by Allport style is the "particular manner of execution which permeates any highly integrated volitional activity" (Allport, 1937, p. 494). In distance education, spontaneous learner-instructor interaction is frequently neither as flexible nor as timely as it would be in conventional instruction. This research examined the effects of matching or mismatching the design of asynchronous distance education to the field dependent and the field independent learner. Horn's construction of Information Mapping© (Horn, R.E., 1989) was employed to add structure compatible with the Field Dependent learner. Subjects were administered the GEFT, a measure of field dependence-independence. Only those in the first and fourth quartiles of the resulting distribution participated the study. The first quartile was comprised of Field Dependent (FD) subjects and the fourth quartile was comprised of Field Independent (FI) subjects. Half of each group was randomly selected to receive asynchronous online instruction designed to match their cognitive style, and half received asynchronous online instruction designed to mismatch their cognitive style. Analysis of the results showed that matching the cognitive style of the FD asynchronous distance learner resulted in significant differences between the pre and post test scores. However, an analysis of the test results for the FI learners whose instruction was designed to match their cognitive style showed no significant differences from pre to post test. The FI learners whose instruction was designed to mismatch their cognitive style did show a significant difference from pre to post test. A two-by-two factor analysis showed a significant effect for the design of the modules, but no effect for cognitive style or the interaction of cognitive style and module design. Matching the FD cognitive style, in asynchronous distance education had a positive impact on achievement for both Field Dependent and Field Independent learners as measured from pre to post test. / 2031-01-02

Teleducação interativa no transtorno fonológico: desempenho de alunos com e sem a utilização de uma mídia eletrônica / Interactive tele-education in phonological disorder: students performance with and without the utilization of an electronic media

Marina Jorge Pulga 26 May 2011 (has links)
The creation of new educational strategies based on technology is the essence of Tele-education Interactive. The resources are diverse, bringing together the use of objects of learning, videoconferencing and systems based on internet. The objective of this paper consisted on the application and analysis of a Distance Education model in the area of Child Language, more specifically to the Phonological Disorder, comparing the students´ performance of three public universities of the State of São Paulo. Participated of these project 60 students of the 4th year of the Speech Therapist course, being 30 from the control group (CG) and 30 from the experimental group (EG), which were evaluated on a presence way, by means of written assessment protocol and the EG received a copy of an electronic media, a CD-ROM previously elaborated. Was established one month so that the students could explore the material, but the CG didnt receive the CD-ROM, just continued exposed to traditional education. As a result it was concluded that most of the EG students improved their performance after the period of using the CD-ROM and the suggested material as a Tele-education could be recommended to complement the traditional teaching, providing to the students a interactive course via self-learning.

Significados, aprendizagens e dificuldades que envolvem a construção de portifólio e de síntese reflexiva em um curso de pedagogia a distância

Valim, Rosenara Evaldt January 2017 (has links)
This Master’s thesis had as study object the analysis of the students-teachers’ comprehension in relation to the learning portfolio and the reflexive synthesis in the learning process of the Pedagogy Distance course of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The observation of the students-teachers’ written productions was done from Jean Piaget’s concept of awareness. The data collection was done through the students-teachers’ written records on Moodle platform and organized with the support of softwares NVivo and CHIC. In this way, it was possible to perform two studies, based on the data observations. Through NVivo, surveys and interpretations of the information were done. With CHIC, it was possible to interpret the relations of similarities and implications among meaning, learning and difficulties understood by the students-teachers about the portfolio and the synthesis. As a result of the analysis, it was possible to verify that the students-teachers understand the learning portfolio as a tool of fundamental relevance for writing the reflexive synthesis and that the written production of the learning instruments is seen as a way of substantial interest for the articulation between the theory proposed in the course and the practice in classroom.

Going Public in an Age of Digital Anxiety: How Students Negotiate the Topoi of Online Writing Environments

Gold, David, Garcia, Merideth, Knutson, Anna V. 01 January 2019 (has links)
Though composition studies has long sought to leverage new technologies of literacy to help students go public, we remain anxious about our ability to do so, as students commonly enter our classrooms already composing for diverse public audiences in a variety of digital contexts. Yet students, too, are often anxious about these new modes of composition, which circulate in a destabilized rhetorical environment where traditional understandings of authority, argument, and audience no longer hold. This article identifies five topoi of this new rhetorical landscape—presence, persistence, permeability, promiscuity, and power—describing the anxieties and affordances they present for student writers, the dispositions toward writing they foster, and the challenges and opportunities they pose for composition. This framework provides a critical vocabulary for compositionists seeking to help students negotiate emerging networked publics.

A Qualitative Exploratory Single Case Study of Faculty of a College of Business: Attitudes, Perceptions, and Concerns Related to Distance Learning

Unknown Date (has links)
With the ever-evolving advancements in technology, public not-for profit higher educational institutions have experienced a significant increase in the demand for distance learning. As a result, with the changing needs of students and institutions’ ambition to remain competitive and relevant in the industry of higher education, public not-for profit higher education institutions are continuously thriving to ensure that they are offering the best quality of education that can be provided for purposes of distance learning. When considering faculty, faculty play a significant role in making certain that the quality of education is maintained and reflected throughout curriculums and programs despite the instructional method selected. Therefore, understanding their thoughts and perceptions of distance learning is paramount to uncover areas for improvement since they are the ones that experience the impact of distance learning first hand. Therefore, the results of this qualitative case study of a college within a major four-year public not-for profit higher education institution were used to determine the attitudes, perceptions, and concerns of faculty members who teach in a distance learning environment. Uncovering and bringing clarification to underlying perspectives that faculty grapple with is imperative for institutions to improve organizationally. As a result, removing obstacles that can hinder change can assist institutions’ administration to discover innovative approaches that foster an atmosphere where distance learning can thrive and increase a greater embrace by faculty. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (Ph.D.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2019. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

University Copyright Policies for Online Coures: An Evaluative Resource Tool for Unbundling Rights of Use, Control, and Revenue

Patzer, Tamara A 08 October 2003 (has links)
Who cares about who owns online courses? Nobody, because that is not what the issue is really about. Ownership is an emotional issue, but controlling the rights of a copyrightable work is tangible and logical. The important question to answer is not who owns online courses, but who controls the rights of any copyrightable work. For universities and faculty members, getting over the emotional issues and down to the foundation of what is truly at stake is of major concern. While it is nearly impossible to create qualitative guidelines for copyright policies and/or contracts, it is eminently possible to examine existing policies and contracts and relate how a handful of universities are handling copyright and intellectual property issues pertaining to online courses. The purpose of this thesis is to provide a starting point for this complex transaction in the form of a resource tool that includes some basic background about copyright law, relevant case law related to "work-for-hire," and relevant academic freedom issues. The original work of this thesis is the creation of a tool, which reviews of a sampling of university policies pertaining to online copyright issues and ownership. Accordingly, the contribution this thesis makes to the understanding and clarification of universities policies related to online material copyright ownership will be important for faculty members and universities in two ways. First, it will help others develop better online copyright policies based on tangible issues rather than emotional ones. Second, this thesis can be a basis for others to build upon for future research on this important topic.

A Study of Factors Affecting Participation and Performance of Police Officers Undertaking the Queensland Police Service’s Management Development Program by Distance Education

Jack, Barbara Leigh, res.cand@acu.edu.au January 2005 (has links)
Management education for police officers has played a significant role in the desired transformation of police services around the world from vocational to professional status. This thesis reports research that employed qualitative and quantitative data collection methods to investigate the factors affecting participation and performance of Queensland Police Service officers who undertook the Management Development Program by distance education mode. Three phases of data collection were employed. The first phase involved interviews with facilitators of the program about their perceptions of factors that affected participation and performance of officers enrolled in the program. Data from this phase were used to develop a questionnaire with seven internally consistent scales. This questionnaire constituted the second phase of data collection and was completed by officers at the ranks of senior constable, sergeant and senior sergeant who had successfully completed at least one unit of the Management Development Program. Data gained from the questionnaire were used to investigate the relationship between an officer's characteristics and the factors that influenced participation and performance in the Management Development Program. An analysis of these data provided the basis for the development of a schedule for interviews that were conducted with the manager of the program and the head of the School of Management. Central to these two interviews were implications for the delivery of the Management Development Program as part of the Queensland Police Service's continuing education and professional development program. These interviews constituted the third phase of data collection for this study. This study found factors that influenced the participation and performance of officers undertaking the program were their attitude to in-service professional development, how they perceived professional development, issues about their success potential, the level of personal, professional and academic support they received, the impact of aspects related to program delivery, and discourse with facilitators of the program. A model that provides a comprehensive representation of the relationships among the variables was developed. Key recommendations derived from this study have implications for the clinical delivery of the Management Development Program. Recommendations focus on the need to market the benefits of the program to individual officers, to provide enhanced student support services, to ensure the appropriateness of the learning materials, and to establish orientation programs and assignment-writing workshops for officers. Recommendations for the Queensland Police Service include the need to market the program’s importance to continuing education and professional development for officers as well as the program’s contribution to ensuring officers possessed sound management skills. Recommendations focussing on human resources include ensuring that numbers of facilitators are adequate to meet the learning needs of officers and that all facilitators possess appropriate postgraduate qualifications. It is also recommended that the postgraduate level of the Management Development Program be reviewed to determine if it is the most appropriate for the needs of officers and the service.

Information skills and the distance education student : An exploratory study into the approaches of Southern Cross University distance educators to the information needs of external students

Phelps, Renata, renata.phelps@deakin.edu.au January 1996 (has links)
This study unites the concepts of self-directed learning and information literacy in the external higher education environment. It asserts that many attempts by librarians at building better working relationships with distance educators have failed because the approaches of distance educators to the information needs of students are not adequately addressed. This exploratory and qualitatively based study examines the approaches of ten distance educators at Southern Cross University (SCU) to the information needs of their external students. It then makes recommendations based on these interviews which aim to improve relationships and co-operation between libraries and distance educators and to promote self-directed learning approaches by external students.
