The weight of love : locating and directing the soul in Augustine's early works

The aim of this thesis is to explore the weight of love in Augustine’s early works (AD 386-95). By the weight of love, this thesis refers to the location and direction of the soul qua lover. According to Augustine, every soul has a journey to attend to, and every journey comes replete with obstacles on the way. To negotiate these obstacles involves attending to the weight of love, taking care to place the soul in relation to the truth. To achieve this, Augustine embarks on three pivotal early works to develop an itinerary for spiritual awakening. In De Academicis (AD 386), he forges a path “from Cicero to Christ” in order to deliver the soul from scepticism, and to present it to the true philosophy. In De vera religione (AD 390-1), he paves a way “from aversion to transcendence” in order to overcome Manichean pride, and to embrace the humility of Christ. Finally in De libero arbitrio (AD 388-95), he charts a course “from faith to understanding” whereby the soul overcomes temptation to blame God for sin, and gains awareness of its location as a sinner in Adam. By examining each itinerary in chronological order, this thesis establishes the place of love as a driving mechanism in the early works, and thereby reveals a profound continuity in Augustine’s early approach to the soul as lover.

This Diploma Thesis deals with the topic of the light and the soul in Charles Baudelaire and Otokar Březina in general. Then it concentrates on the particular motifs of the light and the soul and their metaphors. The main point of the Thesis is the poetic texts of both of the writers. The method used in this part is the literary and aesthetic analysis of the texts. Respect to the fact that it is focused on the comparative research, the following method used is the method of comparison which includes the charts with the frequency of the keywords in both of the authors and the enumerations which illustrate the issue of the present chapter. The aim of the Diploma Thesis is not only the comparison in the form and the interpretation but especially the determination of the similarities and the differences of the two poetic types within the framework of the present theme and the literary and historical context. We will start from the body-soul duality introduced, at the beginning of Platonic philosophy, with epistemic purposes. We will investigate the deepening of this dichotomy as a result of the crystallization from an increasingly systematic exploration through philosophy and in the function of the advancement of Christianity which, appropriating this Platonic duality, derived in moral ramifications that radically split the Western man. We will try to follow the clues of the physiological motivations that led and lead men to accept this weakening perspective of singularities, adhering to the herd culture. We will reflect on the role of consciousness in maintaining this fracture. We will approach the relations of forces involved in this process and how much Nietzsche brought from the physiology, and more broadly from biology, scientific contents that gave physiological and discursive consistency to his perspective of the wills of power in permanent struggle in the multiplicity of organisms that compose the living body. We will ask with Nietzsche how the relations of domination in philosophical production are given, and why a certain force once imposed metaphysical rationality as a sure path to knowledge, banishing the body from this course and from that goal. After all, let us echo the philosopher's recommendation, repeated several times: to interrupt this cycle and to restart philosophy through the body / Nesta dissertação, propomos uma reflexão sobre o papel destinado ao corpo pela filosofia na produção de pensamento e na construção de conhecimento. Partiremos da dualidade corpo-alma introduzida, no início da filosofia platônica, com finalidades epistêmicas. Investigaremos o aprofundamento dessa dicotomia em função da cristalização de um endereçamento cada vez mais sistemático na filosofia e em função do avanço do cristianismo que, apropriando-se dessa dualidade platônica, dela derivou ramificações morais que cindiram radicalmente o homem ocidental. Tentaremos seguir as pistas das motivações fisiológicas que levaram e levam os homens a aceitar essa perspectiva enfraquecedora das singularidades, aderindo ao gregarismo do rebanho. Refletiremos sobre o papel da consciência na manutenção dessa fratura. Abordaremos as relações de forças envolvidas nesse processo e o quanto Nietzsche trouxe da fisiologia, e mais amplamente da biologia, conteúdos científicos que deram consistência fisiológica e discursiva à sua perspectiva das vontades de potência em luta permanente na multiplicidade de organismos que compõem o corpo vivente. Nature Writing and Healing: Recovering the Wild Soul

In this study, I explored how nature writing could be seen as healing text. I described some common problems associated with the construction of trauma and grief narratives and examined how nature writers dealt with them. The study began with my frustration at being unable to write a healing narrative for myself and progressed as I integrated research that informed my own writing. The literature I read included a variety of perspectives, from Jungian and traditional psychotherapy to current writing theory. I used the theory to comment on the nature writing texts as I discovered them. Using the words and stories of nature writers to fuel my own, I explored how their writing was both personally reflective and socially aware. In particular, I examined the importance of the natural world as a significant "other" for the writers and analyzed how their relationship with nature brought meaning and solace to their grieving.

The focus of this thesis is to emphasise the lived experience of being a migrant, and of living in a multicultural society, and to acknowledge the multi-dimensionality of these experiences. The author conducted interviews with people from ethno-specific community groups in the Sydney suburb of Auburn. These interviews explored the physical, emotional and spiritual aspect of coming to terms with a changing sense of what is home and what is foreign. The tenor of the thesis is strongly optimistic and explores the social ecology of multiculturalism in Australia in the late 1990's, using Auburn, with its strong immigrant population and large Turkish community, as a case study. The contributions by the people of Auburn are woven through the thesis as voices in their own right, rather than as quotations for a line of argument. Social ecology, as a project, works to open up dimensions of awareness and to acknowledge complexity by addressing the physical and sensory levels of individual experience as well as the broader political and social contexts which frame people's lives. The thesis acknowledges that the success of contemporary Australian multiculturalism has something to do with the broad based policies that implement this social phenomenon. More importantly, multiculturalism succeeds because it has become the culture scape in which the soul of the community wanders. This thesis acknowledges that there is something intellectually difficult about the word soul, but there is an ecological value in James Hillman's idea of the soul as not an elevated idea but rather one 'down in the earth'; soul in this sense is about place, finding and taking root in a new place. / Doctor of Philosophy(PhD)

Taking the lid off the Black Rio movement and música soul : the shifting terms of race and citizenship in Rio de Janeiro

In this project, I situate the Black Rio movement and Brazilian música soul within a history of representations of black Brazilian masculinities in music. I do so in order to trace changing conceptualizations of race and citizenship in 1970s Rio de Janeiro. I seek to move beyond the existing literature which judges the Black Rio movement on its political expediency while ignoring its historico-cultural context. That is, prior works tend to pit black soul musicians and dancers against the mostly-white, middle-class intellectuals who have historically made determinations about black Brazilians, and in doing so these works have judged the Black Rio movement a political failure. Instead, I focus on the agency asserted by black Brazilian musicians and dancers in representing themselves and in creating alternative places for the enactment of their identities in opposition to the normative expectations of Blackness and standards of masculinity. Beginning in the 1920s and the 1930s, expectations for black masculine behavior were tied to restrictive, demeaning representations of the malandro in samba music and of afrobrasilidade in Carnaval celebrations. These representations were influenced by changing attitudes towards race in the context of national consolidation and the propagation of the myth of racial democracy, which recognized racial difference while not recognizing extant racial inequality. Entrenched modes of thinking and normative modes of being were adamantly challenged by soul musicians and dancers in the 1970s. Through the adoption of U.S. funk and soul music and strong masculine imagery associated with the Black Power movement, black Brazilians appropriated and resignified international symbols in order to forge a new black identity. In doing so, soul musicians and dancers carved alternative spaces for themselves, and renegotiated the terms of their inclusion in the Brazilian nation. This paper considers the shifting place of Blackness in Brazil through an analysis of visual, aural and lyrical representations of Blackness in music and in the critical reception of that music. I argue that funk and soul music played a key role in destabilizing the restrictive notion of afrobrasilidade held by mainstream Brazilian society, enabling new ways of being both black and Brazilian. / text
