Stasis and Motion Explored in Three of my Musical Compositions

Howe, C. Theodore 27 September 2019 (has links)
This thesis is meant to be an exploration of musical gestures pertaining to the concepts of stasis and motion in music, in three of my original compositions. The intent of this exploration is to demonstrate how looking at musical compositions from the perspective of stasis and motion can help both the composer and the listeners to understand their formal structures, as well as be interesting, inspiring, and can add more depth to a work. The compositions are as follows: 1) Brume, for String Quartet, which details my attempt at creating an overall atmosphere of stasis with little, minutely -detailed motion over a long period of time, using very little musical material. 2) Sous le Sol, for Woodwind Quintet, where changes in metre, rhythmic accent, and key signature (motion) come to the fore to obscure an unchanging (static) rhythmic drive. 3) Lumière et Couleurs, for Orchestra, where all of the elements of stasis and motion, such as harmony, rhythm, and pitch are guided in part by a pre-determined compositional process, namely, the Fibonacci sequence. I will first define what is meant by stasis and motion in the context of this essay, then I will explain the musical and literary sources of inspiration that led to my choosing this approach, and, finally, I will analyze the three-aforementioned works and how I applied stasis and motion throughout their compositional processes.

The Twelve between two testaments : the Minor Prophets as Christian scripture in the commentaries of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Cyril of Alexandria

Ondrey, Hauna T. January 2015 (has links)
My thesis offers a comparison of the Minor Prophets commentaries of Theodore of Mopsuestia and Cyril of Alexandria, isolating the role each assigns (1) the Twelve Prophets in their ministry to Old Testament Israel and (2) the texts of the Twelve as Christian scripture. While the two produce radically different commentaries in terms of quantity and detail of christological interpretation, the source of their divergence cannot be reduced to Cyril's admitting messianic prophecy whereas Theodore does not. Rather, I argue that Theodore does acknowledge christological prophecies, as distinct from both retrospective accommodation and typology. Further, a careful reading of Cyril's Commentary on the Twelve limits the prospective christological revelation he ascribes to the prophets and reveals the positive role he grants the Mosaic law prior to Christ's advent. My thesis secondly explores the Christian significance both Theodore and Cyril assign to Israel's exile and restoration, the pivotal event to which the Twelve bear witness. I here argue that Theodore's reading of the Twelve Prophets, while not attempting to be christocentric, is nevertheless self-consciously Christian. Cyril, unsurprisingly, offers a robust Christian reading of the Twelve, yet this too must be expanded by his focus on the church and concern to equip the church through the ethical paideusis provided by the plain sense of the prophetic text. Revised descriptions of each interpreter lead to the claim that the label “christocentric” obscures more than it clarifies and polarizes no less than earlier accounts of Antiochene/Alexandrian exegesis. I advocate rather for an approach that takes seriously Theodore's positive account of the unity and telos of the divine economy and the full range of Cyril's interpretation, in order to move beyond a zero-sum assessment and offer instead a positive account that appreciates the strengths of each Christian reading of the Twelve.

Developing interpretive turbulence models from a database with applications to wind farms and shipboard operations

Unknown Date (has links)
This thesis presents a complete method of modeling the autospectra of turbulence in closed form via an expansion series using the von Kármán model as a basis function. It is capable of modeling turbulence in all three directions of fluid flow: longitudinal, lateral, and vertical, separately, thus eliminating the assumption of homogeneous, isotropic flow. A thorough investigation into the expansion series is presented, with the strengths and weaknesses highlighted. Furthermore, numerical aspects and theoretical derivations are provided. This method is then tested against three highly complex flow fields: wake turbulence inside wind farms, helicopter downwash, and helicopter downwash coupled with turbulence shed from a ship superstructure. These applications demonstrate that this method is remarkably robust, that the developed autospectral models are virtually tailored to the design of white noise driven shaping filters, and that these models in closed form facilitate a greater understanding of complex flow fields in wind engineering. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2013.

Théodore Roosevelt, personnage de caricature : les moments clés de la satire politique / Theodore Roosevelt as a cartoon character : defining moments of political caricature

Renault-Monin, Magali 27 November 2015 (has links)
Several studies of the media coverage of Theodore Roosevelt’s personal, public and private life reveal that he attracted more media attention than many of his successors. The importance of the contribution of even the most caustic cartoonists to his enduring popularity for thirty years should not be underestimated. There are reasons to believe that no other president offered a more constant and delightful source of inspiration. The objective of this dissertation is to contextualize several cartooned images of Roosevelt within the growing awareness of the power of cartoons on public opinion. When combined with politics, humor becomes a tremendous tool for the spreading of official propaganda or of the opposition’s creed. We will therefore assess the characteristics of political humor during Roosevelt’s age and how it is distinct from other types of criticism of the establishment. We will first present a brief history of political cartoons in Europe and their rise in the United States, followed by a detailed assessment of the legacy of the famous cartoonist Thomas Nast, which represents a « defining moment » in the history of American political cartoons. This will be followed by an evaluation of their impact on Theodore Roosevelt’s political career by means of several case studies of decisive moments. The objective will be to determine whether there is a correlation between Roosevelt’s actions and his media image: mythical cowboy, politician with a national destiny, war hero, controversial chief executive.

Change in Northumbria : was Aldfrith of Northumbria's reign a period of innovation or did it merely reflect the development of processes already underway in the late seventh century?

Watson, W. Graham January 2015 (has links)
This thesis looks at a period of Northumbrian history when the king was a part Irish, Iona trained scholar. Some have suggested that Aldfrith was assisted to the kingship by the northern victors of the battle of Nechtansmere. It examines processes in the late seventh century to try to identify changes that might have happened during the reign of this king. The study begins with a wide overview of previous research to establish a basis from which to look for processes and change and also examines the sources available to us, written and archaeological. It then looks at the kingdoms to the north and west and at Aldfrith and the period of his reign. The suggestion is made that Aldfrith acted, with the Church, to cult saints that were Northumbrian and Romanist, as opposed to other options that might have been available. It proposes that the Northumbrians rejected opportunities to develop links with the north and west that may have been open to them. The following chapters then examine processes underway in Northumbria in three general areas; in the use of power, in society, and in the economy. It concludes that although many processes continued as before, these sped up and in certain areas such as the production of coins, and the consequential development of trade, it was a period of innovation. There is no evidence of a focus to the north and west during Aldfrith's reign and this has implications for how Aldfrith got to the throne, suggesting that it was with the support of the Northumbrian elite and not through the military strength of the Dál Riata or the Picts. The evidence is that Northumbria increasingly looked south for its influences and is prepared to absorb and implement processes and approaches from southern England, Gaul and Rome.

Le discours de l’enrôlement dans la poésie militante des guerres de religion. Pierre de Ronsard et Agrippa d'Aubigné / The speech of the enlistment in the militant poetry of the wars of religion. Pierre de Ronsard and Agrippa d’Aubigné

Ndong, Sangoul 21 May 2019 (has links)
With The Tragics, Aubigné demolishes the accusations of sedition and heresy conveyed on the account of the Huguenots by Ronsard. Arises between this work and the Discourses of political and religious cleavages where the poetic creation is, on behalf of the camp of each poet, the means to favor some provisions on the allocutaries. The question of reception thus occupies a central place in these two antagonistic works. It poses the problem of enlistment. This is a set of rhetorical resources whose challenge is to convince the adversary of his mistakes, to strengthen the partisans and to conquer public opinion. What are these resources that allow Ronsard and Aubigné to put their speakers in specific roles for their respective parties ?In our thesis, we are interested in the following questions : under what ethical traits do Ronsard and Aubigné speak each to subordinate his allocutaries to his convictions ? Who are these allocutaries ? With what discursive processes do the two poets act on the thoughts and behaviors of these recipients? Towards the theses of what poet is likely to lean readers ?With these questions, we have observed the roles of the enunciator's representation and his figures in the enlistment discourse, the categories of allocutaries and the oratorical styles set in motion to produce persuasion, firmness and mobilization.

Alternative constructions of masculinity in American literary naturalism

Stryffeler, Ryan D. 29 June 2011 (has links)
This project asserts that male Naturalist authors were not “hypermasculine” acolytes of strident manhood, but instead offer alternative constructions which they portray as less traumatic and more cohesive than prevailing social notions of normative male behavior. I maintain that the rise of the concept of manhood advocated by Theodore Roosevelt in the early decades of the twentieth century contributed to this misconception, for it generated a discourse of “manly” individualism which became equated with socially acceptable performances of masculinity for many Americans. My first chapter illustrates the gradual evolution of an individualistic, violent, and strident concept of manhood, which I label “strenuous masculinity,” through the rhetoric of Theodore Roosevelt. The second chapter explores the ways in which Stephen Crane’s fiction illuminates the trauma and confusion inherent in strenuous concepts of manhood. Many of Crane’s stories, like “Five White Mice,” demonstrate the failure of individualism, while others, like “The Open Boat,” document a more positive construction of what I call “homosocial manhood.” In my third and final chapter, I attempt to prove that Richard Wright’s early texts showcase a range of possible outcomes of black male attempts to stand up to racial oppression. I document that Uncle Tom’s Children and Native Son both depict a continuum of confrontation, with individual violence on one end of the spectrum and non-violent group protest on the other. Furthermore, because individual resistance is consistently equated with the suffering and death of the protagonists, my project implies that strenuous manhood also fails to provide a site for effectual and sustainable opposition to the negating forces of racial oppression. / Theodore Roosevelt and the transformation of American masculinity -- "The youth leaned heavily on his friend" : alternative constructions of masculinity in Stephen Crane's fiction -- Richard Wright's early fiction as a rejection of the racial oppression of strenuous manhood. / Department of English
