Feminist Ecclesiology: A Trinitarian Framework for Transforming the Church's Institutional and Spiritual LIfe

In light of women’s marginal status in church governance and ministry through most of recorded history, feminist trinitarian ecclesiology is needed to transform the church’s institutional and spiritual life. While Vatican II provided the paradigm shift and promising anthropology essential for an egalitarian church, feminist ecclesiology prompts a radical transformation of its hierarchical and patriarchal structures and practices so that it may truly embody the Trinity. Trinitarian life provides practical and radical consequences for Christian life, and provides a model of church marked by relationships of equality, mutuality, unity and reciprocity. It also provides a strong ecclesiological argument for reform of the juridical Catholic nullity of marriage process, which may pave a pathway for the civilly remarried to receive the sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Eucharist.

Bearing One Another's Burdens: Synodal Trauma-Aware Relational Pastoral Caregiving Ministry for Families in the Local Church

Thesis advisor: Jane E. Regan / In the contemporary United States, trauma is a significant disruptive force in the lives of families. By its nature, however, traumatic suffering isolates and marginalizes its victims, with the result that the pastoral caregiving needs of suffering people can go unrecognized and unmet. This dissertation proposes that caring for families who struggle to cope in contexts of traumatic suffering and chronic distress is a vital work of mission for the Catholic church in the twenty-first century. It further proposes that this work can best be enacted in the local church setting when configured as a synodal, trauma-aware, relational, caregiving community of practice (a STAR caregiving CoP) ministry. The ministerial model offered here is designed to enable parishes and dioceses to develop compassionate, competent ministerial initiatives that can meet the particular needs of families in their communities. Grounded in the theoretical discourses of theological anthropology, ecclesiology, situated learning theory, the ethic of care, and traumatology, the model also reflects insights drawn from the author’s qualitative doctoral research study of two pastoral caregiving ministries that serve men and women struggling with the personal traumas that erupt in family life. [pt] O tema da liberdade humana é vasto e complexo, podendo ser analisado sob diversas perspectivas. A presente dissertação tem por objetivo refletir, à luz da antropologia teológica, sobre os desafios postos pela mentalidade contemporânea à vivência cristã da liberdade na dinâmica da autonomia, responsabilidade e discernimento. O trabalho, de caráter interdisciplinar, se desenvolveu a partir de análise bibliográfica. Metodologicamente, os resultados da pesquisa estão dispostos em três etapas. A primeira elucida as caracterizações que a liberdade humana foi assumindo em decorrência das transformações socioculturais ocorridas na modernidade/pós-modernidade. Aponta fenômenos que viabilizam os paradoxos extremos da liberdade que vivemos em tempos atuais. Dentre os quais, a generalização de um individualismo radical que desencadeou a crise do compromisso comunitário. A segunda etapa apresenta a concepção de liberdade que emerge a partir da reflexão bíblico-teológica contemporânea. Neste sentido, a economia da salvação se apresenta como a história da autocompreensão progressiva do ser humano como um ser de liberdade. A terceira etapa constata o desafio cultural, social, espiritual, ecológico, que temos diante de nós. Acusa uma necessária e urgente educação para a verdadeira liberdade, por meio da formação integral da pessoa humana, a partir da reconstrução do tecido das suas relações fundamentais; indica a exigência de uma ética da responsabilidade orientada para os deveres do futuro, em prol da vida humana e extra-humana; propõe a evangelização da sensibilidade para aprender a discernir. Deus acredita na capacidade de liberdade do ser humano e por isso envia o seu Espírito aos que aceitam ser livres. / [en] The theme of human freedom is vast and complex, and can be analysed from different perspectives. This dissertation aims to reflect, in the light of theological anthropology, on the challenges posed by the contemporary mentality to the Christian experience of freedom in the dynamics of autonomy, responsibility and discernment. The work, of an interdisciplinary nature, was based on a bibliographical analysis. Methodologically, the results of the research are divided into three stages. The first elucidates the characterisations that human freedom has taken on as a result of the socio-cultural transformations that have taken place in modernity/post-modernity. It points out phenomena that make possible the extreme paradoxes of freedom that we live in today. These include the generalisation of a radical individualism that has triggered a crisis of community commitment. The second stage presents the concept of freedom that emerges from contemporary biblical-theological reflection. In this sense, the economy of salvation is presented as the history of the progressive self-understanding of the human being as a being of freedom. The third stage recognises the cultural, social, spiritual and ecological challenge facing us. It calls for a necessary and urgent education for true freedom, through the integral formation of the human person, starting from the reconstruction of the fabric of their fundamental relationships; it indicates the need for an ethic of responsibility oriented towards the duties of the future, in favour of human and extra-human life; it proposes the evangelisation of sensitivity in order to learn to discern. God believes in the human being s capacity for freedom and therefore sends his Spirit to those who accept being free.

The purpose of this research was to investigate and describe the experience of lesbian parents and their adolescents regarding the adolescents’ development of a sense of self in the lesbian home, in order to compile guidelines that can provide help to these parents. The subject was investigated from both a pastoral base theory (normative perspective) and a Gestalt theoretical perspective (paradigmatic perspective). A qualitative approach was followed for the purpose of this study, with semi-structured interviewing with the adolescents and their parents respectively. Adolescents were also requested to make collages that served as an additional data gathering method. The sample group consisted of five adolescent boys and four adolescent girls, some of who were siblings, from six lesbian families respectively. Seven of the twelve parents were biological mothers from previous heterosexual marriages, and the remaining five women had no children of their own. From the literature review and the empirical results of this study, it appears that there are certain positive as well as negative aspects of a lesbian home that influence an adolescents sense of self. In lesbian homes where both parents are involved with the adolescents, share household duties equally and have a quality relationship with each other as well as with the adolescents, the adolescents are generally well-adapted, happy and able to handle challenges in order to develop a healthy sense of self. The positive influence that Christian religious certainty has on the overall development of the adolescents and on the sense of self, was confirmed through this study. On the other hand, adolescents experience the following aspects as challenging and impeding in their development of a healthy sense of self: Conflict and criticism from the companion parents are humiliating and destructive for the adolescents. Stigmatising, teasing and rejection from the hetero-normative society, as a result of their parents’ sexual orientation, appear to be the largest obstacle in their psychosocial development, which also influences their sense of self directly, because they react in a shy, negative and evasive way to the stigmatisation and withdraw themselves from situations that can be painful and humiliating. From the research findings, it appears that the absence of a father figure and financial tension in lesbian families are impeding to the adolescents’ healthy development of a sense of self. Due to the complexity of the aspects that can have a negative influence or impede on an adolescent’s healthy development of a sense of self within the lesbian parent relationship, the researcher realised that professional help, support and guidance might be necessary for some of the lesbian parents and adolescents in order to promote the adolescents’ development of a sense of self and the establishment of a unique identity. Thesis (MTh)--Stellenbosch University, 2011. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study is ‘n research proposal for a possible D.Th degree. The research objective is to explore critically the thought and teachings of Nicholas Wolterstorff, a leading Christian philosopher, that there is an inseparable and fundamental link between the celebration of the Sunday liturgy, the concept of justice we believe in, and human rights. I start by discussing how Wolterstorff writes, lives and defends this thought as a conviction of faith and as a philosophical paradigm. The contents of it can be summarised as follows: the holiness of the believer as an imitation of the holiness of God, is not a mere spiritual trait, it has also social implications; holiness presupposes justice; human rights is based upon the Biblical truths of the equal status of all human beings, mankind as the image of God, and the universal love command. The kingdom of God is established through law and justice. This was already confessed by the early church fathers. Love and justice cannot be separated. The worship of God and man’s responsibility towards one another is grounded in the covenant. Protestantism is a world-formative religion. Worship in the presence of injustices, is not worship; it is false religion. The limitation imposed by the liberal state that its citizens cannot use religious reasons in public for the furthering of justice is then discussed. Religion should be allowed and the State should be impartial in its handling of all religions. Therefore Christians need an adequate cognitive framework for moral judgment. This must also be included in the curriculum of students at Tertiary Institutions. To equip the students for their role in life, the staff must teach and model justice, love, forgiveness, prayer and human rights. Students and the youth in church must also be brought face to face with those who suffer because of injustices, lack of love and economic marginalisation. I then go on to motivate the reasons for undertaking this research. The motivation includes a description of the immorality, injustices and human rights violations in and outside South Africa. Then I discuss the opinions of various theologians across the world of whether worship and faith can contribute to the conversion, healing and change of people and institutions. The last chapter is a tentative illustration of the value of this research for the Church, the academy and the broader society. This value is estimated within the interdependence of transformative constitutionalism (juridical) and discipleship as transformation (theological). I conclude with a few closing remarks. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Hierdie is ‘n navorsingsvoorstel vir ‘n voorgenome D.Th graad. Die doelstelling is ‘n kritiese ondersoek van Nicholas Wolterstorff, ‘n leidende christelike filosoof, se denke en lering dat daar ‘n onskeidbare en fundamentele verband is tussen die viering van die Sondag liturgie, die geregtigheidskonsep waarin ons glo, en menseregte. Ek begin met ‘n bespreking van hoe Wolterstorff hierdie denke skryf, leef en verdedig as ‘n geloofsoortuiging en as ‘n filosofiese paradigma. Hierdie motivering sluit in ‘n illustrasie van die omvang van immoraliteit, ongeregtighede en skending van menseregte in en buite Suid-Afrika. Ek beweeg dan na ‘n uiteensetting van verskeie teoloë se menings of aanbidding en geloof kan bydra tot bekering, heling en verandering van mense en instellings. Die laaste hoofstuk is ‘n tentatiewe voorstelling van hierdie navorsing se waarde vir die Kerk, die akademie en die breë samelewing. Being in encounter : toward a post-critical theology of knowledge of God for persons with intellectual disabilities : with special reference to Karl Barth's 'Church dogmatics' III:2

This study is an exercise in understanding both doctrinally and pastorally the nature of knowledge of God for persons with intellectual disabilities. Its central question is: “How might one know the Word of God without words?” At present, no extended theological systematical consideration has taken place of this question, and confusion arguably exists in the church and wider disability circles as to if/how persons with high support needs, such as intellectual disability, should be afforded pastoral care. This study addresses this need in dialogue with Karl Barth’s theological insights, and by developing an account of knowledge of God for persons with intellectual disabilities that is at once theologically informed and pastorally effective. In the last thirty years theological reflection considered in light of the situation of disability has seen tremendous growth and change, as the discipline has budded and blossomed. In particular, theologians of disability have reflected on the significance of disability in relation to the Christian doctrines of creation, anthropology, Christology, the imago Dei, ecclesiology and eschatology, amongst others, with rich and varied results. Similarly, this project suggests that consideration of the doctrine of revelation and the discipline of pastoral care in light of the situation of intellectual disability will yield unique and valuable outcomes for the disability community, but also for the wider church. Karl Barth will be the primary dialogue partner in these preparatory, theological stages. His thought regarding the incarnation of the Word in various forms, perhaps surprisingly, opens new avenues for our reflection. By engaging Barth’s theological anthropology as well as his theology of co-humanity of being with others in encounter, this project aims to demonstrate that knowledge of God is possible for all persons of all abilities.

Divine perfection and human potentiality : trinitarian anthropology in Hilary of Poitiers' De Trinitate

No figure of fourth-century Christianity seems to be at once so well known and so clouded in mystery as Hilary of Poitiers. His work as an historian provides invaluable knowledge of the mid-fourth century, and he was praised as a theologian throughout late antiquity. Today, however, discussions of his theology are founded upon less solid ground. This is largely due to methodological issues. Modern scholarship has often read Hilary through anachronistic historical and theological categories which have rendered his thought incomprehensible. Recent scholars have sought to overcome this and to reexamine Hilary within his own historical, polemical, and theological context. Much remains to be said, however, in regard to Hilary's actual theological contribution within these contextual parameters. This thesis contends that in all of Hilary's polemical and constructive argumentation in De Trinitate, which is essentially trinitarian, he is inherently and necessarily developing an anthropology. In all he says about the divine, he is saying as much about what it means to be human. This thesis therefore seeks to reenvision Hilary's overall theological project in terms of the continual, and for him necessary, anthropological corollary of trinitarian theology-to reframe it in terms of a 'trinitarian anthropology'. My contention is that the coherence of Hilary's thought depends upon his understanding of divine-human relations. I will demonstrate this through following Hilary's main lines of trinitarian argument, out of which flows his anthropological vision. These main lines of argument, namely, divine generation, divine infinity, divine unity, the divine image, and divine humanity, each unfold into a progressive picture of humanity from potentiality to perfection. This not only provides a new paradigm for understanding Hilary's own thought, but invites us to reexamine our approach to fourth-century theology entirely, as it disavows any reading of the trinitarian controversies in conceptual abstraction. Further, theological and religious anthropology are widely discussed in contemporary scholarship, and Hilary's profound exploration of divine-human relations, and what it means to be a human being as a result, has much to offer both historical and contemporary concerns.
