The notion of religion used derives from the concept of theology of culture proposed by the german-american philosopher and theologist Paul Tillich and its consequences, as the concept of the courage to be, faith, revelation, non-being and being-itself. The study is based on short stories and novels published by Clarice Lispector, covering several thematic as body, sexuality, gender, poverty, identity, belonging and otherness. The thesis defended is that exist religious preoccupations at Clarice Lispectors literature, considering Tillichs notion. This problematic is expressed both in short stories as in novels by the thematics as well as the textual structure. Clarice Lispectors work exhibit a huge questioning about existence considering the origin, the ending, the purpose and meaning of existence, approaching the religious foundation of cultural expression. This religious foundation appears as a constant, a continuous line from which can be understood in a deeper way both the sense of unity of the complete work of the Brazilian writer as well as the particularities of the narratives according to different perspectives. Our hypothesis is that there is, in Clarices literature, a moment when the characters experience an event that makes them face their existential situation in a new or different way. These events are basically the shock with the non-being, the encounter with the nothingness that is in the basis of the literary construction of the characters.

A history of confession: the dialogue between cynicism and grace in selected novels of J.M. Coetzee

Hornby, Catherine Muriel January 2002 (has links)
In introducing the four novels under discussion as a “History of Confession”, this study explores the resistance to the dominant discourse of ‘history’ offered by the sustained confessions of individuals. In examining Coetzee’s oeuvre it is possible to delineate the outline of a dialogue between cynicism and grace, and the effects of these on the process of confession in each of the works Chapter One, dealing with Age of Iron, draws on Levinas’ theory of ‘the Other’ in order to elucidate the role played by the interlocutor or confessor in the process of confession. The recognition of the passage of the self through the Other is integral to the attainment of a state of grace, without which confession cannot be brought to an end The countermanding claims of the writer's will-to-write and duty to society are illuminated as a source of cynicism which overwhelms the intervention of grace. The Master of Petersburg, discussed in Chapter Two, is a confession of the guilt and despair faced by the writer who sacrifices his soul to answer the urge to write. Chapter Three, which examines Coetzee’s excursion into autobiography, represents a continuation of the confessional trend. The distance between the narrator and protagonist of Boyhood illustrates the convolutions of self-deception in the process of confession. The chapter which deals with Disgrace identifies a new trend in Coetzee’s writing:the concern with animals. Levinas’ theory, which identifies the encounter with the Other as necessary to precipitate an intervention of grace, is again useful in explaining how Coetzee has postulated the unassimilable otherness of animals as primary to human ethical development. This chapter also concludes that Disgrace represents a high point in the recovery of both grace and agency in Coetzee’s oeuvre. The concluding chapter suggests that the accumulation of meanings to the term ‘grace’enables its definition as a semi-religious abstraction. Coetzee suggests that belief in its existence has the power to affect interactions on the physical plane, especially those between the self and the Other.

A educação teológica nas veredas do labirinto literário: Mythodologia dos contos de Jorge Luis Borges / Theological education in the paths of the literary labyrinth: Mythodology of the short stories of Jorge Luis Borges

Carvalho, Rogério Gonçalves de 09 October 2017 (has links)
This thesis was born from the research we started in a master\'s thesis. At that moment we had questions about how theology could dialogue with art, more specifically with literature. In response we find two points of convergence between theology and literature: theology with literary theory and faith with literary aesthetics. But we also find that both in language and literary genre, theology and literature find themselves in unbalanced relationships. We then set out for a doctoral thesis in the Science of Religion at PUC in São Paulo, putting the theological method in a new perspective and under the suspicion that the myth could be a more \"balanced\" starting point for the dialogue between Theology and literature. Thus we find Gilbert Durand\'s \"mythodology\" as a reasonable \"myth-hermeneutic\" to account for myth as a starting point for both theology and literature. However, in our current thesis, our question was: what are the implications of this theological-literary method based on a \"myth-hermeneutic\" for a theological education that owes the cultural traditions of Latin American mestizo and hybrid identity found in literature? We then apply the mythodology in the short stories of one of the best representatives of Latin American literature and model of writer under the aegis of the fantastic story, specifically the magical realism: Jorge Luis Borges. We chose the short stories from the works Fictions and O Aleph. In these tales we discover that the guiding myth is \"Hermesian\", of synthetic imagination, which is well suited to the hybrid and mestizo identity of Latin American art and literature. We also note that the \"mitema\" of short stories are closely related to the \"metaphors-myths\" that Borges chose as archetypal images that permeate all his tales.

At that moment we had found two points of convergence between theology and literature. The first point is the theoretical (theology and literary theory) and the second the experiential point (faith and literary aesthetics). However, we also find that both in language and literary genre, theology and literature find themselves in unbalanced relationships. In language because of the nature of theology, which is explanatory, and the nature of literature, which is experiential. In the literary genre because these languages change their relations depending on the type of literary work. Our suspicion about myth is a point of convergence or a more “balanced” departure from the old relations of theology and literature to its mythic-symbolic nature. Thus we find Gilbert Durand's “mythodology” as a reasonable “myth-hermeneutic” to account for the myth as a starting point. If we can not have a balanced relationship at the end of the line, at a point or points of convergence, perhaps we can have a more balanced relationship at a starting point, at the “genetic” beginning of theology and literature. Mythodology, a hermeneutical task divided into two phases, a “mithanálisys” and a “mithocriticism”, was carried out in one of the best representatives of Latin American literature and model of writer under the aegis of the fantastic story, specifically of wonderful realism: Jorge Luis Borges. We chose the short stories from the works Fictions and The Aleph. In these tales we discover that the guiding myth is “Hermesian”, of synthetic imagination. [en] THEOLOGY AND LITERATURE AS THEOPATHODICY: SEARCH FOR A THEOLOGICAL POETIC THOUGHT / [pt] TEOLOGIA E LITERATURA COMO TEOPATODICEIA: EM BUSCA DE UM PENSAMENTO POÉTICO TEOLÓGICO

ALEX VILLAS BOAS OLIVEIRA MARIANO 18 July 2018 (has links)
[en] The aim of this present research is examine the relation between of the meaning of life other the pathodicy inspired by the Viktor Emmil Frankl s logotheory (1905-1997) and what contribution the theology can make about the question. The Theopathodicy theoretical construction results from the Theology s openness to issue understanding as theo-logy the query about the meaning [logos] of God [Theós], in the human search for meaning. The theological basis of the work is the logic of existential knowledge present in Karl Rahner s (1904-1984) Theology of the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius of Loyola, as a way to see the Theological Anthropology in the form of Christian existence. Also, a second aim, as long as part of this proposed study, is find criteria to develop a literary reason, as far as formal element concerned to pathodicy, and consequently even the theopatodicy. And thus resulting in what we call poetic theological thought as a way of uncovering meaning, as well a proper way to make explicit the existential element of theological formulas for a loan thinking of Literature.

Teologická reflexe vybraných motivů v současné české poezii / The theological reflection on the selected motives in contemporary Czech poetry

Sixta, Tomáš January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is a theological reflection of contemporary Czech poetry. Specifically, the thesis deals with collections Úloža by Ivan Martin Jirous, Darmata by Petr Hruška and Osip míří na jih by Marie Iljašenko. It focuses mainly on their concepts of man, the world and transcendence. The work is divided into three chapters, the first two being a necessary prelude for chapter three. The first part of the thesis presents some of the ways in which theology can relate to poetry. Language, imagination and metaphor are presented as common fields of both theology and poetry. Furthermore, this chapter defines two possible theological approaches to poetry: The theological approach to poetry as an object of theology and as a subject of theology. In the second chapter, there is literary analysis of the collections, which is necessary for the third part. In the third part, which is the main focus of this thesis, a theological reflection of selected collections is presented. Its aim is not only to examine whether and how the selected themes in the collections correlate with their conception in theology, but also to present what they may be inspirational for theology.
