Two areas which have received insufficient attention in the psychological research literature are gender-pair related issues in psychotherapy and the therapeutic relationship. A joint consideration of psychoanalytic and feminist theory suggests that the quality of intimacy established between women in psychotherapy will impact upon therapists' perceptions of relationship satisfaction and treatment outcome. In particular, the interrelated dimensions of nurturance and individuation are pointed to by the theoretical literature as salient in defining the nature of intimacy in the female/female therapy relationship.

Non-Indigenous Therapists' Lived Experiences of Gaps and Challenges in their Multicultural Competencies when Working with Indigenous Clients

There have been rising concerns about the lack of accessible mental health services for members of Indigenous communities impacted by colonialism. Previous research highlights a scarcity of Indigenous therapists and not much is known about the multicultural competencies of non-Indigenous therapists providing services to Indigenous clients. As such, this thesis research inquires about the lived experiences of non-Indigenous therapists in relation to the gaps and challenges they experience in their multicultural competencies when working with Indigenous clients. An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach was used to inform data collection and analysis. Participants included three psychotherapists who were interviewed using a semi-structured protocol to learn more about gaps and challenges for the following categories of multicultural competence found in the literature: cultural awareness of self, cultural awareness of other, cultural knowledge, cross-cultural skills, and culturally sensitive alliance. Themes were generated for each category from the analysis of interview transcripts as follows: cultural awareness of self (i.e., Awareness of normative Whiteness, Reflecting on marginalized identity, Observing others' lack of self-awareness); cultural awareness of other (i.e., Idiosyncratic understanding of Indigenous culture, Cautiousness surrounding essentializing, Cautiousness around stereotyping, Navigating White-passing privileges, Oppressions towards Indigenous people); cultural knowledge (i.e., Educational programs and resources, Compensating through self-learning, Supervisors' knowledge, Complexity of knowledge, Understanding experiential knowledge, Discomfort with knowledge); cross-cultural skills (i.e., Tensions with Western understandings, Departing from normative practice, Caution in conversations, Repairing relational ruptures); and culturally sensitive alliance (i.e., Inner obstacles, Race-related self-conscientiousness, Trust building, Cultural empathy, Joining through similarity). Two notable themes were additionally generated outside these categories related to workplace and systemic challenges. Learning how non-Indigenous therapists make sense of their interactions with Indigenous clients by taking a closer look at gaps and challenges in therapy could inform future research, training, and practice on developing competencies that assist therapists in navigating a durable therapeutic relationship with Indigenous peoples.

The therapist develops his identity by doing therapy, but before he is able to do that, he needs to understand what he sees the role of therapy to be, as well as developing his own therapeutic skills. Fortunately there are personality traits which enhance this identity formation process. It is by his own actions and involvement that the therapist accomplishes this multifaceted process. The effects of this identity formation are varied and require the therapist to undergo introspection on a number of issues which affect his own life-world. Patientsuicid - : Terapeuters upplevelser och påverkan ur ett systemiskt perspektiv

I yrket som terapeut är ämnet suicid ständigt närvarande. När professionella terapeuter hamnar i kris blir reaktionen lika stark som hos andra människor. Vår utgångspunkt var att patientsuicid är en händelse som inte hanteras optimalt i arbetsorganisationen, vilket leder till psykiska, fysiska och sociala konsekvenser för terapeuten, både på arbetsplatsen och i privatlivet. Syftet med studien är att öka kunskapen inom psykoterapiområdet om vad som händer vid ett patientsuicid, bli medveten som terapeut, enskild individ och organisation hur ett patientsuicid påverkar ur ett systemiskt perspektiv. Organisationens förbättrade förmåga att hantera ett patientsuicid bör kunna få positiv betydelse för terapeuten då kunskapen ökar om hur terapeut och system samverkar. Studien grundar sig på sex terapeuters upplevelser av patientsuicid. I resultatet framkommer vad dessa terapeuter upplevt, samt deras synpunkter på vad som skulle kunna förbättras vid framtida patientsuicid. Ett fynd vi gjort är att det bör finnas en flexibilitet i organisationen för individuella bedömningar vad gäller behov av stöd till drabbade terapeuter. Sättet på vilket terapeuter meddelas om patientsuicid, samt av vem, får olika effekter på terapeuten. Organisationen kan utvecklas vad gäller bemötandet av den terapeut som drabbas av patientsuicid. Ytterligare ett viktigt fynd och förbättringsområde är rutiner kring hantering av kontakt med anhöriga.
