Detection rates of northern bobwhite coveys using a small unmanned aerial system-mounted thermal camera

Martin, Megan Elaine 25 November 2020 (has links)
Northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) monitoring (e.g., covey-call surveys) is labor-intensive and imprecise. We evaluated the influence of bobwhite covey size and cover type on covey detectability when surveyed with a thermal camera-equipped small unmanned aerial system (sUAS). We placed bobwhite groups (3, 6, and 12 individuals/cage) among three cover types (grass, shrub, forest) on a private farm in Clay County, Mississippi (3 replicates, 27 total cages). At civil twilight, the sUAS flew over cages at 30 m, capturing photographs every 5 s. We asked 31 volunteers to evaluate 57 photographs for covey presence. Overall true positive rate was 0.551, but improved with increasing covey size. Coveys in grass had lowest true positive rate by photograph (0.403), followed by forest (0.562) and shrub (0.605). Results indicate that thermal sUAS could be a viable method for surveying intact bobwhite coveys, especially if detection of smaller groups and those in denser vegetation improves.

They have the same temperature, but this one is colder : A qualitative study on primary school students’ understanding of the physical phenomenon of heat conduction

Nilsson, Mikael, Blomqvist, Helen January 2024 (has links)
The study identifies a specific problem area related to students' misconceptions about heat and heat conduction. The aims of the study are to contribute knowledge about how practical activities with thermal cameras impact the interaction and understanding of heat conduction among intermediate-grade students. The study was conducted with 23 fifth-grade students in two different schools in Sweden. To address the study's purpose, groups of three to four students were observed during a designed activity in which we participated. This activity included discussions and experiments on heat conduction using a thermal camera. The activity was recorded on video and later analysed. The results of the study, presented in three experiments, indicate that the use of thermal cameras can effectively support students' understanding of heat conduction. Students articulate the concept of heat conduction and use it in discussions. Visualizing heat with the help of thermal cameras facilitates students in connecting theoretical concepts to practical situations and enhances their ability to explain and reason about the phenomenon. The study also highlights the teacher's role in guiding students in their development. Despite some difficulties in verbalizing their conclusions, students show increased awareness of heat conduction and its connection to different materials. The study thus emphasizes the potential of using thermal cameras to support teaching and improve students' understanding of how heat spreads.

Thermal Imaging Platform for Drones : Cost-effective localization of forest fires

Bjervig, Joel, Slagbrand, Johan January 2019 (has links)
A device for identifying forest fires in an early stage has been developed during the course of this project. Attached to a drone, this prototype will provide a live-stream to a web server displaying a blended frame, made of a thermographic image showing thermal radiation and a regular photography with the visible light. The platform consists of a small single-boarded computer, a thermal camera sensor and a regular camera module. All powered by a power bank and fitted into a custom made 3D printed plastic case. At startup the computer automatically executes scripts written in Python, initializing its sensor components and processes the captured images which finally gets transmitted to a live-stream via a web server connection. Everything described above worked well, but originally the intent was for the web interface to provide a map with the current location coordinates of the drone. Since a module for mobile communication with support for GPS was not acquired, any implementation of such kind was impossible. However, several drone models already possess the feature to obtain such coordinates.

Thermal And Visible Band Image Fusion For Abandoned Object Detection

Yigit, Ahmet 01 February 2010 (has links) (PDF)
Packages that are left unattended in public spaces are a security concern and timely detection of these packages is important for prevention of potential threats. Operators should be always alert to detect abandoned items in crowded environments. However, it is very difficult for operators to stay concentrated for extended periods. Therefore, it is important to aid operators with automatic detection of abandoned items. Most of the methods in the literature define abandoned items as items newly added to the scene and stayed stationary for a predefined time. Hence other stationary objects, such as people sitting on a bench are also detected as suspicious objects resulting in a high number of false alarms. These false alarms could be prevented by discriminating suspicious items as living/nonliving objects. In this thesis, visible band and thermal band cameras are used together to analyze the interactions between humans and other objects. Thermal images help classification of objects using their heat signatures. This way, people and the objects they carry or left behind can be detected separately. Especially, it is aimed to detect abandoned items and discriminate living or nonliving objects

Kamera pro aplikace v biologii / Camera for biological applications

Jurák, Petr January 2017 (has links)
This diploma thesis is focused on the design of IP blocks for thermal camera. This termal camera is intended for plant research. The main part of the thermal camera is an infrared detector that detects a frequency in the range of 8 – 14 m. The analogue signal obtained is modified and subsequently digitized. The detector also includes a Peltier device which is designed for both detector cooling and heating, and is controlled by an external signal. The MicroZed development board implements IP blocks. The thermal camera is designed to be controlled from the MicroZed board. Device analysis is first described from the theoretical part to the design of IP blocks.

Pré-processamento digital de imagens obtidas na faixa espectral do infravermelho distante / Digital image processing in the longwave infrared spectral range

Bittencourt, Thiago de Morais Gonçalves 14 September 2012 (has links)
This work aims to present the research and development of digital image processing algorithms for uncooled LWIR thermal camera in Brazil. The study of an infrared thermal camera is a strategic issue since that has more and more applications in military, judicature, rescue, industry, hospital and science areas. This work describes the design and implementation of all image-processing algorithms required to obtain high-performance images with low noise and high contrast, such as: functions for non-uniformity correction of sensor deficiencies, dead-pixel replacement algorithms, histogram generation, contrast enhancement methods and output pixel processing with frame rate of 30 frames per second based on 320 x 240 Uncooled Focal Plane Array (UFPA). In this work all algorithms was implemented in software to get results quickly and to facilitate the validation of computer codes. There are some results of electro-optical characterization on the assembled system, indicating the main figures of merit that guide the study of this technology, such as: 3D noise components, noise equivalent power (NEP), signal transfer function (SiTF) and noise equivalent temperature difference (NETD). The results indicate that the proposed imageprocessing algorithms increase the quality of the corrected image, and the test results through the digital video of the infrared camera show that all metrics are in accordance with its nominal value.
