Contribution to reduction the Peak-To-Average Power Reduction in OFDM systems by thanks to the Adding Signal Based Techniques

Diallo, Mamadou Lamarana 08 June 2016 (has links)
One of the main drawbacks of the OFDM modulation scheme is its high Peak-To-Average Power variation (PAPR) which can induce poor power efficiency at the transmitter amplifier. The digital base band pre-distortion for linearisation of power amplifier and the PAPR mitigation are the most commonly used solution in order to deals with efficiency and linearisation at the high power amplifier. This thesis is focused on the PAPR mitigation solution, and particularly on the adding signal based techniques. The proposed solutions in this report are about improving the Tone Reservation method which is the most popular adding signal based technique for PAPR mitigation, and also the classical clipping method which is the most simple method (in terms of computational complexity) actually.

Approche conjointe canal et amplificateur d'émission pour l'allocation dynamique de puissance dans les systèmes MIMO-OFDM / Joint channel and power amplifier for dynamic power allocation in MIMO-OFDM systems

Sohtsinda, Hermann 05 April 2017 (has links)
This thesis focuses on the optimization of multimedia transmissions in MIMO-OFDM systems by jointly taking into account the power amplifier non-linearity and the wireless channel distortions. The OFDM modulation generates a high peak fluctuation, measured by the PAPR, which is affected by the RF non-linearity such as the power amplifier, reducing the transmission quality. We first propose a new method to improve the Tone Reservation method performances in terms of PAPR reduction gain and convergence speed, by including the samples of the Guard Interval Signal in the optimization algorithm. Simulations results using a power amplifier model with memory effects and a radio channel based on a realistic propagation model show that the new method offers the better performances, while respecting the IEEE 802.11a spectrum mask. Secondly, we propose to study the impact of power amplifier nonlinearity on the transmission of scalable image contents over a precoded Closed-Loop MIMO-OFDM system. The simulations in a realistic context, under the standard IEEE 802.11n standard show that the RF non-linearity affects the robustness against transmission errors and highly degrades the visual quality of the received JPWL images. Finally, we propose a new precoding strategy which jointly takes into account the power amplifier, the radio channel and the image content to be transmitted. This strategy successively allocates power between the SISO sub-channels obtained from the MIMO channel decomposition in order to maximize the visual quality of the received images, while reducing the total output power. Simulations with a realistic power amplifier model, associated with a realistic channel model show that this new strategy ensures a robust transmission and improves the visual quality of the received images.

New Selection Criteria for Tone Reservation Technique Based on Cross-Entropy Algorithm in OFDM Systems

Chiu, Min-han 24 August 2011 (has links)
This thesis considers the use of the tone reservation (TR) technique in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The nonlinear distortion is usually introduces by the high power amplifiers (HPA) used in wireless communications systems. It orders to reduce the inter-modulation distortion (IMD) in OFDM systems. In addition to the original peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR)-reduction criterion, we propose signal-to-distortion plus noise power ratio (SDNR) criterion and distortion power plus inverse of signal power (DIS) criterion. Based on these criteria, the cross-entropy (CE) algorithm is introduced to determine desired values of the peak reduction carriers (PRCs) to improve the bit error rate (BER) of nonlinearly distorted. Computational complexity is always the major concern of PAPR technique. Therefore, the real-valued PRCs and the modified transform decomposition (MTD) method are introduced here to dramatically decrease complexity of inverse fast Fourier transform (IFFT) operation with slightly performance loss. The simulation results show that the proposed criteria provide a better BER performance and a lower computational complexity.

Peak to Average Ratio Reduction in Wireless OFDM Communication Systems

HAIDER, KAMRAN January 2006 (has links)
Future mobile communications systems reaching for ever increasing data rates require higher bandwidths than those typical used in today’s cellular systems. By going to higher bandwidth the (for low bandwidth) flat fading radio channel becomes frequency selective and time dispersive. Due to its inherent robustness against time dispersion Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplex (OFDM) is an attractive candidate for such future mobile communication systems. OFDM partitions the available bandwidth into many subchannels with much lower bandwidth. Such a narrowband subchannel experiences now due to its low bandwidth an almost flat fading leading in addition to above mentioned robustness also to simple implementations. However, one potential drawback with OFDM modulation is the high Peak to Average Ratio (PAR) of the transmitted signal: The signal transmitted by the OFDM system is the superposition of all signals transmitted in the narrowband subchannels. The transmit signal has then due to the central limit theorem a Gaussian distribution leading to high peak values compared to the average power. A system design not taking this into account will have a high clip rate: Each signal sample that is beyond the saturation limit of the power amplifier suffers either clipping to this limit value or other non-linear distortion, both creating additional bit errors in the receiver. One possibility to avoid clipping is to design the system for very high signal peaks. However, this approach leads to very high power consumption (since the power amplifier must have high supply rails) and also complex power amplifiers. The preferred solution is therefore to apply digital signal processing that reduces such high peak values in the transmitted signal thus avoiding clipping. These methods are commonly referred to as PAR reduction. PAR reduction methods can be categorized into transparent methods – here the receiver is not aware of the reduction scheme applied by the transmitter – and non-transparent methods where the receiver needs to know the PAR algorithm applied by the transmitter. This master thesis would focus on transparent PAR reduction algorithms. The performance of PAR reduction method will be analysed both with and without the PSD constrained. The effect of error power on data tones due to clipping will be investigated in this report.

New tone reservation PAPR reduction techniques for multicarrier systems / Nouvelles techniques de réduction du PAPR pour les applications à porteuses multiples

Mounzer, Ralph 15 December 2015 (has links)
[...] / Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted by many telecommunication and broadcasting systems for its robustness, high transmission rates, mobility and bandwidth efficiency. However, OFDM signals are characterized by high power fluctuations, measured by the Peak to Average Power Ratio (PAPR), which cause distortions at the output of the non-linear High Power Amplifier (HPA) and prevent the radio frequency designer to feed the signal at the optimal point of the HPA specifications in order to reduce the energy consumption. The second generation of Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB-T2) adopted two PAPR reduction techniques, one of them is Tone Reservation (TR). TR creates a Kernel from a reserved set of subcarriers. The kernel is then iteratively added to the OFDM signal in such a way to reduce its peaks thus reducing its PAPR. In the first part of the thesis, different algorithms offering better performances compared to the DVB-T2 TR solution are proposed. A first group of solutions introduces changes and enhancements to the TR algorithm adopted in DVB-T2 TR but keeps the same kernel definition. This group includes: the Partial Oversampling and Fractional Shifted Kernels (POFSK) technique which is based on a partial oversampling of the signal, the Dynamic Threshold (DT) technique which allows better algorithm convergence by dynamically computing the PAPR reduction threshold for every OFDM symbol, and the Enhanced Peak Selection (EPS) technique which provides additional PAPR reduction by choosing the appropriate signal peaks to reduce and the peaks to skip. The second group of solutions includes the Individual Carrier Multiple Peaks (ICMP) technique which is based on a special kernel definition that changes from one algorithm iteration to another and uses a different phase calculation approach that allows the reduction of multiple peaks at a time. GICMP is an optimized version of ICMP that allows the parallelization of iterations in such a way to reduce the processing delay and the number of algorithm iterations. The simulation results and real hardware platform measurements of the proposed algorithms showed that, compared to the DVB-T2 TR version, the GICMP algorithm allows a Modulation Error Rate – MER gain of up to 2.5 dB or a 10 % reduction in HPA consumed energy with the same performances.

New signal processing approaches to peak-to-average power ratio reduction in multicarrier systems

Bae, Ki-taek 06 December 2010 (has links)
Multi-carrier systems based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) are efficient technologies for the implementation of broadband wireless communication systems. OFDM is widely used and has been adopted for current mobile broadband wireless communication systems such as IEEE 802.a/g wireless LANs, WiMAX, 3GPP LTE, and DVB-T/H digital video broadcasting systems. Despite their many advantages, however, OFDM-based systems suffer from potentially high peak-to-average power ratio (PAR). Since communication systems typically include nonlinear devices such as RF power amplifiers (PA) and digital-to-analog converters (DAC), high PAR results in increased symbol error rates and spectral radiation. To mitigate these nonlinear effects and to avoid nonlinear saturation effects of the PA, the operating point of a signal with high peak power must be backed off into the linear region of the PA. This so-called output backoff (OBO) results in a reduced power conversion efficiency which limits the battery life for mobile applications, reduces the coverage range, and increases both the cost of the PA and power consumption in the cellular base station. With the increasing demand for high energy efficiency, low power consumption, and greenhouse gas emission reduction, PAR reduction is a key technique in the design of practical OFDM systems. Motivated by the PAR reduction problem associated with multi-carrier systems, such as OFDM, this research explores the state of the art of PAR reduction techniques and develops new signal processing techniques that can achieve a minimum PAR for given system parameters and that are compatible with the appropriate standards. The following are the three principal contributions of this dissertation research. First, we present and derive the semi-analytical results for the output of asymptotic iterative clipping and filtering. This work provides expressions and analytical techniques for estimating the attenuation factor, error vector magnitude, and bit-error-rate (BER), using a noise enhancement factor that is obtained by simulation. With these semi-analytical results, we obtain a relationship between the BER and the target clipping level for asymptotic iterative clipping and filtering. These results serve as a performance benchmark for designing PAR reduction techniques using iterative clipping and filtering in OFDM systems. Second, we analyze the impact of the selected mapping (SLM) technique on BER performance of OFDM systems in an additive white Gaussian noise channel in the presence of nonlinearity. We first derive a closed-form expression for the envelope power distribution in an OFDM system with SLM. Then, using this derived envelope power distribution, we investigate the BER performance and the total degradation (TD) of OFDM systems with SLM under the existence of nonlinearity. As a result, we obtain the TD-minimizing peak backoff (PBO) and clipping ratio as functions of the number of candidate signals in SLM. Third, we propose an adaptive clipping control algorithm and pilotaided algorithm to address a fundamental issue associated with two lowcomplexity PAR reduction techniques, namely, tone reservation (TR) and active constellation extension (ACE). Specifically, we discovered that the existing low-complexity algorithms have a low clipping ratio problem in that they can not achieve the minimum PAR when the target clipping level is set below the initially unknown optimum value. Using our proposed algorithms, we overcome this problem and demonstrate that additional PAR reduction is obtained for any low value of the initial target clipping ratio. / text

PEAK TO AVERAGE POWER RATIO ANALYSIS AND REDUCTION OF COGNITIVE RADIO SIGNALS

Hussain, Sajjad 21 October 2009 (has links) (PDF)

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF OFDM IN PAPR REDUCTION USING NEW COMPANDING TRANSFORM AND ADAPTIVE AC EXTENSION ALGORITHM FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORKSPERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT OF OFDM IN PAPR REDUCTION USING NEW COMPANDING TRANSFORM AND ADAPTIVE AC EXTENSION ALGORITHM FOR NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS

BAIG, CLEMENT RANJITH ANTHIKKAD & IRFAN AHMED January 2013 (has links)
This paper presents a new hybrid PAPR reduction technique for the OFDM signal, which combines a multiple symbol representations method with a signal clipping method. The clipping method is a nonlinear PAPR reduction scheme, where the amplitude of the signal is limited to a given threshold. Considering the fact that the signal must be interpolated before A/D conversion, a variety of clipping methods has been proposed. Some methods suggest the clipping before interpolation, having the disadvantage of the peaks re-growth. Other methods contributed that the clipping after interpolation, having the disadvantage of out-of-band power production. In order to overcome this problem different filtering techniques have been proposed. Filtering can also cause peak re-growth, but less than the clipping before interpolation. Another clipping technique supposes that only subcarriers having the highest phase difference between the original signal and its clipped variant will be changed. This is the case of the partial clipping method. To further reduce the PAPR, the dynamic of the clipped signal can be compressed. Linear methods like partial transmit sequence or selective mapping has been proposed for the reduction of PAPR as well. Another PAPR reduction method is the tone reservation. It uses tones on which no data is sent to reduce the transmitted signal peaks. Derivatives of this method with lower computation complexity and improved performance have been proposed: One-Tone One-Peak and one by-one iteration. A similar PAPR reduction method is the multiple symbol representations, where alternative signalling points are used to represent one symbol. The simulation results highlight the advantages of the proposed PAPR reduction method. / The proposed technique namely Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) Algorithm reduced the high Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The Peak-to-Average Power Ratio (PAPR) is equal to 6.8 dB for the target clipping ratios of 4 dB, 2 dB and 0 dB by using Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) Algorithm. Thus, the minimum PAPR can be achieved for low target clipping ratios. The Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal obtained by the Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) algorithm is equal to 1.2 dB at a Bit Error Rate (BER) of 10-0..4 for different constellation orders like 4-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (4-QAM), 16-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM) and 64-Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (16-QAM). Here, the Bit Error Rate of 10-0.4 or 0.398, that means a total of 398-bits are in error when 1000-bits are transmitted via a communication channel or approximately 4-bits are in error when 10-bits are transmitted via a communication channel, which is high when compared to that of the original Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal. The other problems faced by the Adaptive Active Constellation Extension (Adaptive ACE) algorithm are Out-of-Band Interference (OBI) and peak regrowth. Here, the Out-of-Band Interference (OBI) is a form of noise or an unwanted signal, which is caused when the original Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) signal is clipped for reducing the peak signals which are outside of the predetermined area and the peak regrowth is obtained after filtering the clipped signal. The peak regrowth results to, increase in the computational time and computational complexity. In this paper, we have proposed a PAPR reduction scheme to improve the bit error rate performance by applying companding transform technique. Hence, 1-1.5 dB reduction in PAPR with this Non-companding technique is achieved. In Future, We can accept to implement the same on Rician and Rayleigh channels.
